I did this song for my final exam project. That's why the time signatures are in the video.

Again... I couldn't be more proud to mix your drums when you play "live"!
But this? Dream Theater?
It's one of the few bands (and drummers) that "do it right!"
and you, my friend, "nailed it" again!
:)
Great video man! You deserve more exposure. :)
This song is one whole "betcha can't play this"
PS. You nailed it!!
This is the best cover of this song I've ever seen. Not only did you play it all correctly, you actually understood it to the point that you could say all the time sigs. Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic.
I never learned music theory so i don't know all of that time signature stuff so i conceded to learn this song by ear :/ i should learn
This cover is amazing. The on screen time sigs really helped me too!
Epic!!! No words, just epic!
Rack toms have 2 inner plies of African mahogany with 4 outer plies of maple (6-ply). Floor toms have 4 inner plies of African mahogany with 4 outer plies of maple (8-ply). Bass drum has 6 inner plies of African mahogany with 4 outer plies of maple (10-ply).
that was brilliant, amazing kit and shirt by the way.
Honestly, I can watch this all day, awesome video, you did a great job
I LOVE the "Crazy Triplets" section of Dance of Eternity, such a cool groove of alternating beats.
Best Drum cover on YT!
Best drum cover of this song, AMAZING
WOW, much respect, first class musician!
This is fantastic Mikey! Great performance and production.... love the time signature play by play and ragtime graphics...
Best Regards

Great sounding drums and perfectly played cover!
A pleasure to watch such a cool performance. Awesome job, man!
Very well done! Impressed with the precision of your timing and execution overall!
Absolutely incredible, man. Great playing. Everything was spot-on.
You are amazing Mike! Great playing. I'm a guitarist, so I can't critique too closely, but your groove and accuracy are amazing. I particularly liked seeing the time changes in the video, because I hadn't realised just how frequent they are in this piece!
es el mejor cover que he encontrado de esta canción, muy muy bueno. La calidad del audio genial!
that kick sounds beautiful!
Finally I found an interesting drum cover! Nice job man!
Wow... dude you played that flawlessly!!! And that crossover part?? I can only imagine to be able to do this some day... and that's awesome that you even put the time signatures on there you are an incredible drummer man rock on!!!

Awesome job 👏👏
I've watched a lot of covers of this, but this is seriously the absolute best on RUclips.
Question, though - what was the hardest part for you to learn?
Best cover on YT! Second only to Mike himself!
IS BAAAACK!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!
Alan childs here. Fantastic. See you in Modern Drummer soon enough. Best. A. C.
Wow! Outstanding Mikey!! Way to take your drumming to a higher level and I like how relaxed you are when performing Mike Portnoy licks...nice work, man. When you practice Dream Theater, don't you wonder how they think up this stuff? Hope to see you soon...
De los mejores covers que he visto sin duda.
Excellent! ... Perfect!! good job man ;)
Sweet. You Tube Stalking your prior Work. Just a Kid here. Nice Cover.
Holy crap, you are amazing!
Nailed it, dude!!
simply perfect!!
dude, you have to make a gear tour!
awesome videos by the way!
@mattlikesdrumming With a song like this, it's all about feeling the time changes...not so much counting them.
Great job!
wow man great job!
I love it, fabulous playing! If I was a younger man I might try and learn to play it. But i don't think i have the energy or years left.😂
Best cover !!
Bravo!!!
Whoaaa.. You played it perfectly 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾 if i close my eyes when hear it, i thought it was him (Portnoy)
I think you're referring to the "Grunge Metal I" section? I think what happens is the tempo slows down a hair in the 4/8 bars and I'm playing 16th note triplets in groups of 4 with the phrase starting on the 1 and the 3 of each measure. Hope this helps!
that was freakin' awesome!!! best cover that I've seen for this song!! please let me know how you are able to upload these without them being pulled by youtube. I've got about 8 videos that I've uploaded but have been removed from this site. I'm not understanding the "copyright" by-laws on here. thanks!!
Why 5 dislikes? WHY? Dude, amazing!
@dualrock thanks man, helped me a lot only a question is RLRL RLRL RLRL RLRL in 16th note by compass
Awesome
hey man, I would like to know what the position of the hands in crossover pattern, as left and right is that notes
Can you please make a video lesson for those hi-hat crossovers that you do for Crossover Pattern I and II. Pleeaasse
Your name is Mike, so it works!
@premier86 I recorded through 2 MOTU 896HD's (96k/24bit) into ProTools 9. Then I did a quick Master in Wavelab 7.
I love you man !
really great man !! how did you approach a song like that with these complex odd times ? have you read the chart first ?
Wow you play amazing!! What mic are you using in your bass drum? It sounds incredible
Thanks, man! I really can't tell you why my videos haven't been taken down by RUclips. All I do is write "is the copyrighted property of it's owner(s)." in the video and in the description of the video. I know you can dispute the copyright claim, maybe you can try that.
Do You Have Atleast A Slow Motion Caption For The Cross Over Pattern 1 ? ?
@donslock40 Thanks a lot DJ! I really appreciate it!
Hey man, amazing cover
what china are you using? it sounds awesome, is it a paragon?
excellent ! :)
@dualrock thank you, thank you very much
As I watched this, I thought, "Dang, how does he play this song with all those crazy tempo changes?" I think this was perfect! Also, are those Pearl Masterworks? They sound phenomenal!

Dude could you tell me what kind of of processing you used on your over head (like eq frequancies ?)
Once again, late to the party!.. where is this guy now?!?
I thought he was good playing Tom Sawyer, holy crap! This guy is Really good! Amazing!
Thank you!! I’m in YYNOT! Come check us out on tour!! We just did the Bubba Bash Neil Peart tribute with a bunch of really cool guests performers, including Mike Portnoy who played the original drum track on this video.🤘😊. Check us out on FB!
Yes, that part is incorrect. It's actually 4 bars of 9/16 followed by a bar of 2/8.
Bravooo!!! what series of hats are you using? thks : )
@erickgerardo The whole crossover section is straight 16th's alternating R L. I'll send you a transcription with the hi-hat/kick accents.
nice!
Sorry, but it would take a really really really long time for me to transcribe the full drum part. I know you can find tabs of the drum part online. When learning a song like this, it's best to break it down into sections and slowly work through it. When I learned this song, I tried to focus on the melody, not so much the time signatures. I would recommend listening to the song until you get to the point of being able to sing most of it in your head, then start working on the drumming.
14" Sabian AAX Stage Hats on my left and then 14" Sabian B8 Hats on my right.
Amazing.. how'd you learn all those time sigs so well?
What the wood of your mw kit made of??
PRO!!!!
You could always download the video and slow it down in Windows Movie Maker:)
3:50 do video how to practice and learn this pattern PLEASEE!! :D
du bist gut ; ) wasn das fürn set ?
WOW
Wow, yeah, I never noticed how Rush inspired that ending is. lol
perfect ;)
nice
@erickgerardo Yup...That's the sticking.
@timgrooveman Thanks a lot. We have to get together soon!
