Paleo Profile - Bunch of Prehistoric Fish

- I'm finally back after such a long break. I've been really busy and I try to make these vids when I can. In this video I discuss a few almost-mythical prehistoric fish that actually existed in Earth's past. I discuss a few famous ones like Megalodon and Heliocoprion to a few obscure ones like the giant fish of the Kem Kem which where the food of Spinosaurus. Hope you enjoy!

*Major Correction: In the video I refer to the Kem Kem Formation as the location of Stromer's giant fish and dinosaur fossils; however, I mixed up the Kem Kem Formation with the Bahariya Formation. I actually meant to say the Bahariya Formation. The two formations are dated to basically the same time period, had very similar fauna, and were close to each other geographically, but nonetheless they are two different formations and I made a mistake.
Do "Far cry Primal" the game please.
TREY the Explainer No problem, nonetheless, it’s interesting knowing that an once thriving ecosystem thrived in what is now a waste land don’t you think?
TREY the Explainer a new helicoprion spiral was found recently that suggests that I could have grown to about 40ft in length

Finally, someone has said what I have always thought. I was always annoyed at the idea of megalodon just being a giant supper sized great white. It just baffled me that people thought something so boring was cool. It is far more interesting to me to ponder the idea of a gigantic shark with a living ecosystem on its back and possibly an appearance that was different from any other shark today. Maybe it is just me, but this shark is way more exciting to me now.
Gabriel Black I never thought of it like that but when I think about it your totaly right
This is something I've been holding on to since I was like five. So this kind of made my day.
He could be wrong. Remember Dimetrodon?
Maybe, but I still think this makes more sense than the alternative. And he is still pretty accurate most of the time.

I like the fish called the ”Bunch of Prehistoric Fish”
Sounds like a scp
it is an scp,a collective of fish, when a fish is damaged the entire population which consists of a large variety of species will get affected, also small fish can melt to heal the larger army fish, they can melt into one gooey monster than feeds on organic and non-organic substances, and it has enough intelligence to have complex speech, and it seems to evolve very quickly as they reproduce each time food is acquired, and they seem to be highly adaptive and basically even controlling their own evolution by changing their own dna in unknown means

TREY the Explainer thanks for existing
Welcome back, m8!
XD thanks man I'm happy you like my stuff
Yay! Now make more videos bitch!
TREY the Explainer What’s your opinion on the strange Australian Createous ecosystem where we’ve only found small to median sized predators and titan sized (literally) herbivores? Also great video, I’ve keep learning more and more from your videos.
Finally a vid. Also apparently Tyrantrum, the T-Rex pokemon (who has feathers as a coat), was mentioned in the Pokedex to have a full body of feathers in the past and also mentions that 100% extinct cloning is impossible. Very fascinating for Gamefreak
shortfuse87 • It's also cool that it is about the same size as a Cryolophosaurus which is what inspired the crest on its head.
ScionStorm Oh yeah good point. I also loved how they potrayed Auroarus's (the amargasaurus) sail theory as being an auroara. Out of all the sauropods they chose the underated Amargasaurus. Gamefreak isnt running out of ideas
Gamefreak have been really good recently I think
Unofficial Gamplays Indeed. All the alolan starters are pretty popular, no one gets left forgotten. And the concept of Ultra Beasts, Tapus and other pokemon like Mimikyu and Alolan Forms prove that Gamefreak still has ideas.
The fossil Pokémon have always been really original, and they sometimes make references that are for paleontological nerds only. In fact I think that part of the anomalocaris fame is due to the Pokémon anorith. I wish that they made the fossil Pokémon using much more unpopular creatures like the did in gen 3.
I doubt that Megalodon would have carried much of an ecosystem. Most sharks have scales with a special texture that makes it very difficult for organisms which create parasitic drag to take hold which is part of the reason sharks are so successful.
yea, I don't see why it would be any different than a whale shark, or basking shark, or even a great white. especially the idea of barnacles(which, somewhat ironically, the sole example he used of barnacles-like animals on sharks was of a very small shark, not a super-massive one.)
@@Mockturtlesoup1 Megalodons most likely did not have barnacles simply because of the fact their skin is covered in microscopic teeth-like scales. This helps sharks move more effortlessly through the ocean, protects their skin from bites, and wards off these parasitic/commensualistic organisms
@@Dman9fp does it still have a shorter snout and creatures following them for protection and when megalodon is hungry they could use one of them as a snack?
@@ashprice1123 No idea why they believe they had shorter snouts (soft tissue very very rarely fossilizes, and majority of sharks are soft tissue &/or calcified cartilage), but megalodon, like great whites & other large sharks that have smaller fish following them, more than likely didn't eat small follower fish. They're hard to catch, don't provide much energy & you can see by their size & tooth design (broad teeth with many serrations), they are designed for subduing and eating large mammals such as whales. Smaller sharks with more pointy teeth such as sand tiger sharks are designed for eating fish (but with many requiem sharks, you can see they are very successful generalist predators because they have both pointy and broad/serrated teeth)
@@ashprice1123 as an analogy to showing how pointless it is to chase small fish as a large shark, image being a hunter in prehistoric times being starving & chasing little squirrels around with a tiny knife. If you're small & quick enough, it might be worth it, otherwise it's better to use bigger weapons & hunt down more energy- rich mammoths & bison

Great video Trey!
Interesting fact: the specimen that finally cracked the Helicoprion mystery was actually not a new discovery, the fossil had been sitting in the museum's basement for over 60 years! Traces of cartilage had been found in the specimen during the 50's, which is how scientists knew the whorl was somewhere on the bottom jaw, but it wasn't until 2013 that a new research team used modern CT scanning and 3D rendering to put it all together and accurately see what the whole jaw looked like.
I recommend the book "Resurrecting the Shark" by Susan Ewing, it's a great read about the mystery of Helicoprion
whenever i see an upload from you, it makes my day

Great new video =D
The image of a basking shark like Megalodon opening it's mouth is such nightmare fuel. I can't get rid of that image from my head for a while.
Not sure if you already did, but I'd like to see a Paleo profile of Parasaurolophus.
15:03 Fish be like "BOOOAAAAAAHHHH"
The new megalodon description sounds way cooler than the old one. It makes it sounds like some ancient, giant sea monster. And it totally makes sense too.
This is one of my favorite videos you've ever made! You should really do more prehistoric sea videos.
Roach dogg
What if the Megalodon was just a giant mouth? Like what if it's mouth made up most of its body? Like a Gible. WHAT IF IT WAS JUST A BIG, AQUATIC GIBLE!? - new meta 2018 (ignore me, I've been playing Pokemon extensively the last two weeks)
Fatalia Vix you sir ... just ignored evolution and thats hilarious xD
awwwww I wanted a swimming giant mouth filled with teeth bigger than my cat
i was actually thinking something similar. not to such an extent, but a more plump and short megalodon. its tail would still have to be fairly large, as would its stomach.
What happens if it evolves? Would it just turn into a huge aquatic Gabite?
Are you stupid? There're no point for ANY animal to have such a body, there're no benefit of having a body like that, no inviroment would cause any animals to evolve like that
19:09 let me guess, it's a duck or something like that...

I was actually talking to my science teacher once about how I thought that it was stupid how almost every art piece of Megalodon looked more great white-like than I thought it should. And she responded by saying that that is what paleontologists do (use comparisons with living animals to do reconstruct extinct ones). So we kept on arguing for a little bit longer(I thought that there should still be more diverse reconstructions since Megalodon is not a true great white, and I thought that this was just unhealthy science to only restore Megalodon in one unconfirmed, close-minded manner), and then she did concede that it was a little bit lazy. Glad you could show me some unique Megalodon reconstructions, and this is just a great video in general! Glad to see you once again.
One of your best Trey...excellent

I’m so happy to see you uploading again man.
That pointless anime reference is on point 🤙
4:51 That is one weird looking Megalodon.
PS Wonderful video!
Thanks! It just shows how much of the animal is still unknown
I don't care its beautiful and THICC
Its cute. I have to admit a giant shark with a face like that is cute.
I'm honestly terrified of the ocean but weirdly fascinated by it. I've drawn a few scenes that have mythical sea creatures with my most recent picture being a Kraken reading a book and drinking something from a mug. What I like about creating these pictures is putting alien creatures in there. I've drawn large whale like beings, weird looking fish, ray like creatures, eel like creatures and invertebrates. I've taken a few pages from how Subnautica went about their designs as well as Star wars. Not sure if these animals would be possible but they are still fun to draw.
Trey, your videos are absolutely outstanding. You need to do other media. Maybe you do, I don't know. But there's a crying need for science educators as good as you. I'm going to try to spread the word about your channel. Hope you will keep them coming.
