Maybe the horns served as shading for the eyes? If the boneplates where covered in skin it could have stretched forward slightly, giving it the edge of being harder to blind by sunlight, hence giving it a massive advantage for mid-day hunting.
Totally aree , this is my theory too. One species of snakes from Kalahari desert use their horns like this and cheetahs have black tear-like stripes under their eyes for shading sunlight while hunting

well first of all the two birds he kept referring to don't use those horns on their heads for looks so much as they are hollow chambers that allow them to produce a loud, deep, and long distant call to females that's very distinct. I think that dinosaur evolved those horns as like that to acts as shielding for the eyes perhaps from the sun or rain, you I mean what was the weather like, perhaps the sun was scorching or maybe it rained heavy all the time there like it does now.
I think the horns could be used in a mix of the two, very similar to deers. The horns would first attract the mate then if another male appears they would be used for pushing each other for dominance over the female.
I think that both of the probable horn hypotheses are correct. I think that at first males would have displayed first, then if both males are equals in display would a pushing match ensue. I base this on how game roosters display first, then fight.
Griffin Giles I agree as if there horns are flat and the have strong neck muscles plus how the bones in the head are fused would suggest they were used in shoving matches and they could also be used in display. The arm waggling could also be used to intimidate rival males and the shoving match thing being used as a last resort as you said
I didn't even know the Carnotaurus existed before this. I love it. It's magically both derpy and fierce at the same time, and the idea of it using it's horns and baby arms to show off like a mating bird is adorable.
This is my favorite dinosaur species since I was 4 years old, specially because of the Disney movie. I even had a *very* tiny (1.5 cm long) Carnotaur figurine from the movie. But unfortunately I lost it when I was 8 y.o. 😔
I remember watching a Dinosaur based anime as a kid. They turned the Carnotaurus into a magic wind ninja, clearly the best representation. Only in Japan.
There's one more cultural reference you missed. In the anime, Dinosaur King, which is basically Pokemon but with dinosaurs, but still fun to watch, the protagonists have a Carnotaurus named "Ace". Aside from the arms, it's actually very accurate! You should go check it out! It's on Netflix.
Trey, I loved this video, honestly, there was ALOT more to carnotaurus that I didn't even know. (Especially bout the display structures) Also just some notes I need to make. Comments like "the devs ruin the dinos by making them innacurate" or "the animals in ark should be overhauled to be accurate" drive me nuts. Though I can't stand the subspecies excuse, the devs have said constantly they're aware of their innacuracies, purposely doing so for the introduction of creative features and for unique designs. Also with concavenator, it's been confirmed to not have quill knobs. The "knobs" have been confirmed this year to be insertions for tendons.
+TREY the Explainer thanks for answering and this is truitt taylor not turk we sare the same channle and im sorry if it was a stupid theory but i don't know much about dinosaurs but your channle has shone a lot to me and opened my eyes to feathers which I previously thought where stuiped. p.s. my post on your jurrasic park video was not supost to be naggtive but might have looked naggtive
Like, replace the arms with thie wings? Then it becomes a wyvern. If not then wow, that's really weird. Wings on the back of it would probably be useless.
Maybe their arms are so small because they were in the middle of an evolutionary phase where they would lose them due to not functioning. Would've been weird to see a horned T-Rex looking thing with no arms, though.
I would say, MOST animals in ark are oversized, from dung beetles to the Giganotosaurus, or have disproportionate bodies or limbs. Although I don't agree with all of their artistic choices, I can understand their design decisions are based more on gameplay than realism (I'm pretty sure a pteranodon couldn't lift up a human adult let alone two wearing armor and weapons lol).
Ark could have been educational as well if they made the dinos more accurate. Now everyone believes that arthropleura spat acid and raptors had nearly no feathers 😞
This video is probably my favorite video that you have made. I love it so much! I watch a lot of your Paleo Profile videos and I learn a lot from them. I try to update my brothers' knowledge on dinosaurs because they think that Jurassic Park is accurate. But they're learning. I try to tell my friends but they don't always listen to me explaining what's accurate and what's not. The only one who really listens is my dad. He said that the information is awesome and he tells his friends. Anyways, I mainly just wanted to say that you are awesome at what you do and keep up the good work!
+TREY the Explainer No, thank you! Otherwise I wouldn't be able make sure that people get at least a brief idea of what dinosaurs should have or might have more likely looked like. So thank you! :3
You should contact the Ark devs and be their dinosaur consultant or something XD While a lot of inaccuracies in the game are mostly for the gameplay (eg half the animals being huge/strong enough to ride) I think you could point out a lot of aesthetic inaccuracies that could be fixed by simply changing a model. Or they could completely ignore you. But hopefully the former, just to make them as accurate as possible without changing the game.
My theory for the horns was for display as well as shading in bright light, much like the large brow bones of soaring and desert birds. If the carnotaurus is designed to run very straight, very fast, chances are there's not a lot of trees and obstacles to block light, and glare would be a big issue. Even cheetahs have black marks and brows to reduce light glare. Your videos are fantastic and I look forward to more!
I really feel Carnotaurus used its horns like a sun visor. The horns are *perfectly* above the eyes allowing shade for them during the brightest part of the day. Cheetahs have similar adaptations with the black stripes on its face to absorb light to help them see. Both are high speed predators of small prey that rely on vision to hunt, so I feel both of these adaptations have a similar purpose.
In the trailer for prehistoric planit there is a small scene where a carno does the arm thing. Like that could have totally been inspired by this video.
My personal theory on a possible use for Carnotaurus' horns could be that they were used when ambushing potential prey. Like a Cheetah, Carnotaurus may have hid in tall grass or brush for prey to come close before sprinting full force at their victim. If it was a small creature they could have simply done as stated in the video, using their jaws and neck like a hatchet or club. But if the prey was slightly larger such as an ornithopod, then Carnotaurus could have used its horns as a ram to knock its prey off balance by charging into their sides, legs or head before going in for a killing blow. I personally think this because the thought of a 10ft tall dinosaur charging head first towards something at 30+mph is fucking terrifying.
I loved the Carnotaurus from Disney's Dinosaur. It scared the crap out of me as a kid, much more than JP's T-rex and Raptor. You can only imagin my 6 year old heart shatering into a million tiny peices when I saw it didn't look that way. I still love Carnotaurus as its one of my favorits (favorit being the Baryonx) and I still love the Disney version. It just made me really upset to see its changes.
Couldnt the throat pouch also have been used for mating? Maybe the animal would bloat it up with air to appear bigger and thus a more suitable mate. Or it could have been used in fighting for a mate pumping them up to appear again bigger to the opponent.
Eli Workman, I know I'm late, but just because it had a throat pouch that could of maybe bloated up doesn't mean it was related to frogs, but you never know, that's just the wonder of evolution and life before mankind existed, however Carnotaurus having a throat pouch that could have possible bloated up was probably just a case of convergent evolution. I'm not mad, I just want to educate you. :)
Extremely unlikely. Just because an animal shares a trait with another animal we shouldn't assume they were related to or an ancestor of the animal in question. (At least not with carnos and frogs, considering how otherwise outlandishly far apart they are in the evolutionary chain of the world)
7 years later, the latest mainstream representation of carnotaurus in prehistoric planet makes for such a good one, with the underside of thos stubby arms being a bright blue, moving here and there during a mting ritual where the male moves his whole body up and down as to show both his massive tail and his upper parts one after the other. I think it's such a remarkable representation. Fits so well everythng we know about it.
Persons and Currie (2011), the same paper that describes the adaptation of the developed _M. caudofemoralis_ muscles, points out that other Carnotaurine South American abelisaurids such as _Skorpiovenator_ and _Aucasaurus_ have similarly dorsally-inclined caudal ribs and long hind limbs. So the earlier South American abelisaurids were potentially relatively fast-running animals as well, but not in the same league as _Carnotaurus_.
Please, not the level of science. This is the internet. Some 4 year old might looks at this like "What does any of that mean?" He would ask his mom, and the mom wouldn't know. Therefore, dumb hate replies from a 4 year old.
My theory for the horns is that they were used for defense. I'm thinking that the horns were like the flanges on a Medieval mace to poke or stab at a larger predator that was trying to eat the Carnotaurus. Also, the horns, as well as the short snout, would have made it hard for any dinosaur to grab the head with their mouth, assuming that they had managed to corner the Carnotaurus and were evolved to fit into a lion/tiger/bear role in the local habitat.
I've also heard that cassowaries may use their crests for cooling purposes and/or to push brush out of the way when running through denser growth. Maybe one or both of those theories may apply to the carnotaurus horns as well. Would make sense to have protection to push tree limbs outta the way if you can run fast but not maneuver well. If anyone has commented about this already I apologize for repeating information 4 years after the video was posted but since it wasn't mentioned in the video I just wanted to share the theories I had heard.
I heard somewhere that deers use their horns and hooves to reach the resin inside pine trees to help heal their wounds. Carnotaurus's horns could have been used the same way. Just saying. I haven't really thought this through or done any research btw.
New antlers, coated with a furry, velvet-like cover, start to form in the spring. By fall, the antlers are fully grown, but the velvet coat starts to itch. So, deer look to our trees to smooth out their new crown. In winter, deer rub their antlers against trees to scrape off the velvet cover. Even knew this is well known wherever you heard that the gouge out trees for resin is such bullcrap I'm surprised someone is dumb enough to think that!!!
I definitely think the horns were used to help slip the prey item allowing the carnatouras to catch up and to play flight and the pushing theory. Maybe they even shaded like modern antlers. The idea that it was just to look cute is also my second best option
I know this is very old but... Is there a chance that Carnotaurus had "seasonal" feathers? like... it only grew them in (along the arms and possibly the head and tail) in the mating season, much like how deer grow antlers just for the mating season? Since you theorize that this wonderful creature used arms as a mating display would that also be a possibility?
I worked in a defunct game The Stomping Land where I pushed really hard to use non-conventional dinosaurs. The game infamously failed to be finished but the Carnotaurus I designed was modeled by Vlad Konstantinov and I can proudly say is to this date the best Carnotaurus in popular media I've ever seen. And It will be re-used in our upcoming game The Isle.

I really like the idea of a carnotaurus having a throat pouch, and thinking about them doing some kind of elaborate birdlike mating display made me imagine if they did have some kind of throat pouch, maybe it could have been inflated as a part of display, like a frigate bird. Just a random thought, but i thought it would be a fun idea since carnotaurus is already one of the weirdest dinosaurs ever.

I think that dinosaur evolved those horns as like that to acts as shielding for the eyes perhaps from the sun or rain, you I mean what was the weather like, perhaps the sun was scorching or maybe it rained heavy all the time there like it does now.
The game the isle has a nice depiction of Carnos. They even have very wide turns in gameplay.
Ark got it close too
I thought the thumbnail was a diagram of some ovaries
Journey through the Nebula THANK GOD IM NOT THE ONLY ONE
I have been waiting for someone to say that lol
do you know de way? took the words out of my mouth
Journey through the Nebula IKR
do you know de way? Man, I thought that my profile was an original idea lol
The arm waggling could also be used to intimidate rival males and the shoving match thing being used as a last resort as you said
James Athersmith Thanks. ^^
Griffin Giles no problem
Griffin Giles also are the fused skull bones and strong neck muscles a common feature to all abelsaurids or just a feature unique to carno
I know this is year old but did you seriously repeat what was stated in the video?
That picture at the beginning won me over instantly, the carnotaurus is my new favorite dinosaur
My theory is that they had the ability to stick their arms out so they could t-pose to assert dominance.
An enimy roars at him carno t poses enimy actually I have to go running away scared
“Maybe they were used in display and covered in colors, and used in shoving contests”
He protecc, but he also attacc.
OMG ITS DOCTOR BRIGHT!!
TheCarnoComposing I Indeed, it is I, the man of bright ideas himself!
But most importantly, he a snacc
I get so excited about new paleo profile vids, I could watch them all day
Ditto only one problem I have to go to school in 3 minutes.
+Mosh Master I am home schooled and I don't have school this week
Carno: Cretaceous cheetah? Or Cheetah: Modern carno?
both = completely different
Papa Troy yew
Wutttttttt
Carno was there first my dude. Cheetahs are the copy cats...heheh copy cats
Triceratops : Cretaceous rhino . Rhino : Modern triceratops
Man I never found Dino’s so interesting but the amount of info you extrapolate is genius . Been watching all day . Keep it up
I didn't even know the Carnotaurus existed before this. I love it. It's magically both derpy and fierce at the same time, and the idea of it using it's horns and baby arms to show off like a mating bird is adorable.
This is also how I felt when I first heard about Carnotaurus! It is indeed very unique!
So should I too try swing my small arms to attract females?
yes
No
Yes.
bluebanana Yes.
bluebanana I tried it & all the girls where staring at me in awe.
I would like to learn a bit more about the Dilophosaurus in the next pales profile

here I am going through youtube around midnight and all of a sudden I see this thumbnail that looks like a creepy walrus staring at me.
“Became more specialized in using their mouths and heads over their arms”
[INSERT BLOWJOB JOKE HERE]
That's not the only thing I will be inserting
Dr Bright, what the heck are you doing talking about blowjobs on a dinosaur video? You should be working on that entry on SCP-3008, get back to work.
Let me guess
Day Off?
This is my favorite dinosaur species since I was 4 years old, specially because of the Disney movie.
I even had a *very* tiny (1.5 cm long) Carnotaur figurine from the movie. But unfortunately I lost it when I was 8 y.o. 😔
Me tooo. :(((((((((((((
1.5 cm? Jesus, that's small!
i hope you are able to find it, and happy thanksgiving

Oop I thought the same XD
I remember watching a Dinosaur based anime as a kid. They turned the Carnotaurus into a magic wind ninja, clearly the best representation. Only in Japan.
Cancer Dinosaur King?
Umm 😐 I think wind and water but yeah, Japan has a way with making this more magical than reality really seems.
I loved dinosaur king
Ok but besides the wind, it was pretty good
Quinn Florence the Carno in the show actually had a really huge fear of water lol
You could say that the carnotaurus' from disney's dinosaur are E X T R A T H I C C
Toast!!!!!!
A wild beaver fan!
Thicc Toast!
TOAST!!!
I would Recommend this vid to thegamingbeaver
You forgot the carnotaurus from Dinosaur king and Carno from the fossil fighters games
+TheGhostgodzilla and Zoo Tycoon 2
+TheGhostgodzilla Dinosaur King was a huge chunk of my childhood. Glad to see someone else knows of it.
Dinosaur King and Fossil Fighters are the two main dinosaur mangas in my childhood
+TheGhostgodzilla the dino king carnotaurus' name is Ace
What about the carbon from primal carnage?
Cheetahs: *goes extinct*
Disney 5 years later: how about we make a kids documentary about cheetahs and make it as big as a lion and SUPER bulky
It's a shame that not much people talk about Dinosaur King or the Fossil Fighter games nowadays.
Carnotaurus was actually my favourite dinosaur growing up because of Dinosaur King, I agree it's not discussed nearly enough
Austin Ames Oh yeah because one if Ace’s moves require him to run fast
ninja attack i think
Austin Ames how accurate was the carno fron fossil fighter, been so long that I can only remember the op dinos that you cant get via fossils

The waggling arms kind of look like eyes. So maybe a display against other carnivores to make it seem bigger and scarier than normal?
No problem ;) happy you like it
TREY the Explainer:D
"Nobody's correctly done the carnotaurus" I give you The Isle.
Braden Galo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Some where there are people who love dinosaurs and know what the hell they are doing.
I was thinking about the same thing, but The Isle wasn't released yet at the time this video was posted.
Tweekkat The Cat ark as well the only think they dont have is their speed
Test_Subject_ 711 they do, they’re speed demons and can’t turn worth crap as well
yes
This is a small theory the horns could be used to shade their eyes from the sun
+Turk Taylor They seem a little too specialized for such a mundane function
+TREY the Explainer
thanks for answering and this is truitt taylor not turk we sare the same channle and im sorry if it was a stupid theory but i don't know much about dinosaurs but your channle has shone a lot to me and opened my eyes to feathers which I previously thought where stuiped. p.s. my post on your jurrasic park video was not supost to be naggtive but might have looked naggtive
Turk Taylor Thank you! and Don't be sorry! Your theory isn't stupid, it just seems implausible
thanks
yeah
Pop some wings on it and u got a fairly mean looking dragon
Like, replace the arms with thie wings? Then it becomes a wyvern. If not then wow, that's really weird. Wings on the back of it would probably be useless.
@@NurseOrysia1 yeah like a wyvern lol my favorite mythical creature
Maybe their arms are so small because they were in the middle of an evolutionary phase where they would lose them due to not functioning. Would've been weird to see a horned T-Rex looking thing with no arms, though.
They said they were vestigial arms in the video...
@@Tornnnado I got vestigial mixed up with something else mb
Pyro it’s fine. Sorry if I came off as condescending.
Dilos are undersized in Ark. In reality they were around 20ft long and didn't shoot crap at people and it didn't have a frill 😃
You need to stop comparing the plastic toys in ark to real life Paleo-proof dinos.
Ark could have been educational as well if they made the dinos more accurate. Now everyone believes that arthropleura spat acid and raptors had nearly no feathers 😞
Are ARK animals oversized...or are the humans actually really tiny?
Mind blown.
Thank you :D
+TREY the Explainer No, thank you! Otherwise I wouldn't be able make sure that people get at least a brief idea of what dinosaurs should have or might have more likely looked like. So thank you! :3
Those cute 'pickle with legs' paleo sketches just makes me think they were real life Deviljho from Monster Hunter lol

Ikr, i did the same
You did not sharpen enough.
I always thought Carno used their horn to protect their eyes from the sun.
Thegameres same
You should contact the Ark devs and be their dinosaur consultant or something XD While a lot of inaccuracies in the game are mostly for the gameplay (eg half the animals being huge/strong enough to ride) I think you could point out a lot of aesthetic inaccuracies that could be fixed by simply changing a model. Or they could completely ignore you. But hopefully the former, just to make them as accurate as possible without changing the game.
+Dragomaster3 I think that is a great idea! I always want these kind of games to be as accurate as possible.
all of the dinosaurs in ark are different evolved versions of real dinosaurs
all of the dinosaurs in ark are different evolved versions of real dinosaurs
.
They're not aiming for accuracy, they said it themselves.
Go look at the Isle, they have really solid accurately designed dinos including the carno
_Carnotaurus_ was also in The Land Before Time XIV: Journey of the Brave.
The Inaccuracies on the Carnotaurus in TLBT is the Arms and mostly, the Horns
The skull is the wrong shape, too. Its' too square.
Naish, one of the guys who came up with the idea, was apparently involved in the production. Honestly can't wait for the release :)
The Carno then got rejected..... 😢

It’s so awesome to see that in the brand new series prehistoric planet they showed that mating ritual pose!
AmazinglyIdiotic If you think movie carnotaur movie is scary, you should see the ride version.
my theory is that it put it's hands on his back to get that extra speed
Carnotuarus: *_"I'm fast as fuck boiii!!"_*

Couldnt the throat pouch also have been used for mating? Maybe the animal would bloat it up with air to appear bigger and thus a more suitable mate. Or it could have been used in fighting for a mate pumping them up to appear again bigger to the opponent.
Kristobro98 Frogs bloat up their throat poaches right? If the Caron could do that then maybe it was related to a frog
Eli Workman thats actually a bird thing, i forget the name of the species, but yeah mainly a bird thing
Another unnecessary dislike by a blockhead :P
This means you are getting closer to be a very famous youtuber :)

+TREY the Explainer What program did you use for these and how long did this video take?

The arm waggling made it onto Prehistoric Planet!
Millions of years in the future:
Aliens: why did humans have pinkie toes? They're mostly useless... Perhaps they wiggled them around to attract mates.
Why do we even have toes?
Carnotaurus - the Linoone of the Ancient World.
There weren't any larger predators. Carnotaurus was an apex predator.
Jeffrey Gao Doesn't mean they wouldn't fight each other. Mating rights maybe?
Ok, then for competition over mates. Similar to what modern giraffes do when the exhibit thier necking behvior.
There was no predator bigger than Carno were it lived.
I am offended by people saying I am related to a carnotaurus >:( but good video :D and nice job on almost 150 thousand subs!
Tyrannosaurus Rex
Keep rocking that feathers prehistoric friend ;)
You're all the same #makegorgonopsidsgreatagain
Tyrannosaurus Rex I'm offended that you don't have feathers like me
Tyrannosaurus Rex how did you type if you have tiny hands
Funtime foxy Gaming T Rex has massive hands when you look at them, their body is just bigger.
Carnotaurs are my precious babies. I love them all.
But in really life they will chase you 😂😂😂😂😂😂and hunt might be
I heard somewhere that deers use their horns and hooves to reach the resin inside pine trees to help heal their wounds.
Even knew this is well known wherever you heard that the gouge out trees for resin is such bullcrap I'm surprised someone is dumb enough to think that!!!
lmao this comment is so stupid
@@LL-tr5et :(
I definitely think the horns were used to help slip the prey item allowing the carnatouras to catch up and to play flight and the pushing theory. Maybe they even shaded like modern antlers. The idea that it was just to look cute is also my second best option
Actually, Carnotaurus was featured in the Lost World video game and in the Jurassic World video game.
Hewy Toonmore also carnotaurus has been depicted in the dinosaur king anime
“Let’s feature more carnotorus in pop culture”

Ah well, still better than disney carno.
what ever happened to the Dilophasaurus video? (hope I spelled that right) and if you do, can you revive it?
Was it a JP inaccuracy video or a paleo profile?
It's not spelled right.
+DarkStardustDragon JP inaccuaracy. It was copryright striked.
Dilophosaurus. :)
This may just be my favorite dinosaur, not saying for sure but, oh boy, these big guys indefinitely deserve more recognition.
21:59 "from locking partners during mating" me: Dino hub
I worked in a defunct game The Stomping Land where I pushed really hard to use non-conventional dinosaurs. The game infamously failed to be finished but the Carnotaurus I designed was modeled by Vlad Konstantinov and I can proudly say is to this date the best Carnotaurus in popular media I've ever seen.
And It will be re-used in our upcoming game The Isle.
+Rodrigo Vega Oh cool! I'll check it out :) I'm a fan of your work Mr. Vega
Well Im a huge fan of your channel! it's just amazing that you cover all my favorite themes in one place. Remind me later to illustrate a video in the future, I would love to provide.
Rodrigo Vega Thank you :D I'm happy you like it
and that would be awesome! I absolutely love your artwork :D
Don't hesitate to write me, particularly if you have another speculative cryptozoology video in mind. I've read the Cryptozoologicon not long ago and as a creature designer loved the idea and your own take on it. It would be really nice to try my own take on the subject on a well developed platform like yours.
Rodrigo Vega Perfect! I would love to see your interpretations of these cryptids, I'll message you when I have a few ideas. Thank you so much, I would really appreciate your help :)
