Hearing that these guys evolved in the span of DECADES makes me feel a lot better about the rapid evolution that takes place in some of my worldbuilding projects.
When I was younger, we didn't have a yard, we had a very large gravel patch. I wound up figuring out that the grasshoppers I caught in said gravel patch were grey, wheras the ones I caught farther into our local woods were green/brown. Same species, just an interesting color split due to where they lived
completely blew my mind that the lizards evolved this rare digestive system within ONLY 30 years!!!!! 🤯🤯🤯 it would have been interesting to note how many generations that was approximately
Italian wall lizards are reproductively mature at 1-2 years, so from this we can assume somewhere between 15 and 30 generations! The lizards lay 3-4 clutches of 4-7 eggs a year, which have a 5-7 week incubation period
@@misterx168 it is difficult to calculate as average age at which someone has their first child varies so much per country and over time, but the average for england at the moment is 30. so using this it would be 660 years. however, as we are going so far back i think a more accurate average age would be 25, as this was the around the average from 1938-1989 so that would be 550 years.
Yeah, like just change selective breeding with natural selection and you got yourself evolution. It's crazy that people don't believe this. Creationist be cray cray

@Sandra Swan well to be fair, youtube comments can be very weird, which leads to people being unable to properly format a comment. Ive had that issue in the past, but its kinda fixed itself now
@Gaming Gator Adapting only gets you so far. Creationists actually love rapid evolution, as that’s how we explain the existence of the species today from the low populations on Noah’s ark. We simply recognize that adaptations are shuffling of existing information, epigenetic switches, or reductions in information. We realize that adaptations are ultimately limited and deleterious.
Big Bird arrived as an immigrant with no family. He attracted so many local girls. Now he’s the head of the most powerful family on the island. He’s the godfather.
Interesting about the finches. Seems like the different "species" on the island weren't fully speciated yet, that's why the various birds could breed with Big. Another fast-evolution event that's been seen recently is in commercially-harvested fish. At least one species has evolved to come to sexual maturity while still under the "throw back" limit...
Species is technically a categorization we construct. Mother nature doesn't care. Grizzly bears and polar bears are distinct species by all normal standards yet they can breed with eachother and produce offspring that can also reproduce. Similarly with beluga whales and narwhal, yet we consider them different species. The major factors that limit the ability for two closely related species to reproduce is chromosome matching. Hence why donky and horse create infertile mules, they have two different chromosome counts. But how we define differences in species is not exclusive to chromosomes. Even different mating rituals can significantly limit hybridization because they can't "whoo" eachother even if they are genetically compatible which is why the finch lineage only mated within its own group, they had no other pressures to go outside their own inbred family, unlike the patriarchal founder who literally had no other options.
"the big bird is now legaly its own species" me: so does this mean we can put big bird on the endagered list and try to support inbreeding to save the species
@@constapatedbannana4164 I think the birds with the bad effects from inbreeding simply die (natural selection) so they won't be able to have kids and spread the genetic modification
@@samuelwilliams5161 considering the big bird line lasted to it's seventh generation, I would consider that a possibility of the gene pool balance idea, besides down the line it would have some changes due to the environmental factors so some having slight altercations would bring in a better chance i am assuming of the gene pool being filled with a bit more specimens would help as them having a different size beak would be linked to their genes having some more variety
perhaps evolution means more then just animals changing, but is also a sit in word for people coming from apes... why would someone agree with someone who said they came from an ape? and why are birds proof of it? everything changes over time, but no matter how small a rock becomes or how its shape changes it never changes into a bird, a snail, or a rabbit. it stays a rock... the same rock... no mater how much it changes. just like anything. changing without changing. just like people, who change, but never change.

reminds me of something i learned in my 7th grade science class. There was a a species of moth in England (i forget what they're called) that were largely white as it helped them blend into the trees in the area, there was also a rarer, black variation. during the industrial revolution, the trees became blackened by the soot from the factories, and the black population of moths became the norm and the white became rare.
In Chernobyl’s exclusion zone all of the tree frogs (which are bright green in other areas) have turned black. The increase in melanin help protect from radiation
@@Anxiousbug Wow, I thought it would be the other way around. I heard that a white-bricked school protected someone's grandfather from radiation during the bombing of Japan because the building reflected the radiation, and those who were in darker-bricked buildings got cancer or died from radiation poisoning fast. The main takeaway I got from this was that evolution isn't a process that takes millions of years, but rather is determined by the reproductive rate of an organism.
Well, evolution doesn't TAKE millions of years, since saying that it takes a finite amount of time implies that the process can be completed. However, evolution is a constant thing, not a task that can be completed.

Yes, and no. Smaller populations have a smaller genetic pool resulting in less possible genetic diversity this is similar to an idea called the founders effect, but with a population that has restricted energy, ie an island there is a larger fight for energy going on, causing a larger need for adaptation. The smaller populations in an area with more energy would however continue to grow and become genetically diverse that way. With islands, there is limited energy causing the population to plateau and the only option of the organisms is to fight for energy rather than expand and find a new source of energy. P.s not sure if this is right this is all i learned from 9th grade bio
Not necessarily. If the environment on the island remains stable and there are no mass deaths, the gene pool should remain fairly unchanged. But if the environment is unstable, more deaths, and genetic mutations that cause changes to an individual's phenotype (white fur vs black fur, ability to digest plant matter) then there will be changes to the gene pool, possibly resulting in evolution. And what everyone else said is true too.

Thanks Trey. You’re the voice of reason. I’ve never understood why creationists feel the need to drive a wedge between the scientific community and the religious community. If one believes that God is all powerful and can do anything, why could not God use the tool of evolution as well as the tool of environmental catastrophe to change the history of the earth? If that’s what you believe, then, of course God could. I don’t see any dichotomy between the scientific system of physical knowledge and religious systems of spiritual knowledge.
Yeah, unfortunately the people pushing creationism don’t actually care about evolution or god/spirituality. They just want to use it as a wedge issue to promote their less palatable ultra conservative and Christian nationalist views. I’m an atheist but I recognize that religion/spirituality is an important part of many people’s lives and it’s sad that the leaders of the creationism movement have convinced so many of their followers that in order to adequately practice their religion they have to reject science. When as you said, that isn’t necessary.
I have family members who are young earth creationists, and every creationist I have had a conversation with about evolution believes that all animal life was created as God intended, and is immutable. There are certain beliefs that they hold that to them are incontrovertible truths. The contention that all animal life that exists today was made by God and unchanged from the moment of its creation and is unchanging is one of them. This remains a tenet of their religion and to refute it is seen as a direct attack on their religion.
this is how catholics (at least. the ones i grew up with) see evolution and science, they accept the earth is as old as it is and that evolution is a thing. after all how do we know those "7 days" god took to create the world arent actually billions of years from our perspective?
I used to think that evolution just popped out of nowhere in a couple billion years so this video saying that evolution can happen at any time and happens over generations taught me something new.
I don't find this surprising. These examples show that the rate of speciation responds to selective pressure. This is how I have always understood evolutionary theory since I first encountered it. (Approximately in the Sixties.)
I still know evolution is a fact but instaces like this just make me confused because it leaves me with an important question. Where are the random mutations? If evolution is done over a period of time through trial and error through random mutation, how is this possible? Could this imply evolution is more simple process with some sort of formula? Ive read so many works on evolution and ive been getting into quantum theory (quantum biology specifically) and it seems as if it could be possible that something else is happening rather than random mutation. I would like to write a fully fleshed out theory but here is a summary: Rather than evolution being a series of successful random mutations, evolution is actually entirely pre-determined. A dramatic change in environment for a species that can adapt to the change, will obviously be changing his behaviors in order to survive. Through these environmental and behaviorial changes, the brain starts behaving different as well and when this happens, *the brain decides to change the DNA of the species* over time to better handle the new setting. Because *once the mind and body have adapted, the DNA starts to change to reflect those mind and body changes more accurately.* This then starts causing the species offspring to start exhibiting physical traits that can be used to take better advantage of the species surrounding evironment. There is some evidence to this as well. There is an instance of an identical twin going into space and coming back with different DNA from his identical twin. Why did this happen? Because when he went into space, the zero gravity *environment caused his brain to react and force his DNA to change to better reflect that environment.* If this were to be true, then it could it be possible to harness that unconscious aspect of the brain in order to force a genetic mutation onto another species? Could this imply that not only do survival aspects of oneself change but so do the sexual/cultural/ritualistic aspects of a species also evolve because of this? Example: male bird color looking more saturated and vibrant as evolution progresses because their minds seek that sexual trait in order to reproduce. I think evolution of life is a self perfecting formula put into practice. Life is the canvas of this formula. If there is no will or reason to change, a species will stay stagnant in evolution for extremely long periods of time. This is why "living fossil" species exist. They are technically perfect in their ability to survive where they exist. What are your thoughts on that?
Aconitus holy shit this is incredible. I feel that this theory wil be proved in a couple decades or so, because of our rapidly increasing knowledge of the brain and other fields of science.
Aconitus environment doesn’t just change his DNA. It can also change the outcome by effecting the mRNA translation. And don’t forget, not all parts of a DNA is informational and only the gene parts are usable

I did. Turned a batch of fruit flies in to starch flies in a month and all it took was an apple and a potato in a netted rubbermaid bin. Anyone can do it if they want to prove evolution to themselves.
Fragotron McFarland They were no longer fruitflies, they died when reintroduced to fruit because they were no longer able to process it. They didn't even mingle or mate with fruit flies. At that point, they had branched off down a new path. So when a finch can no longer eat seeds and nuts because it has a beak specialized for bugs, most would say that this finch had evolved to take advantage of its environment. But to you, this is simply an adaptation. Meaning there is no reason to consider that these birds are becoming a new species. Adaptation would be a bird using fur instead of sticks to build its nest during a cold snap, that bird has adapted a method to deal with the changing climate. If that bird has to change how its body processes food to go from eating bugs to eating carrion, fish, small prey or seeds and is no longer capable of processing its original diet, than they are evolving. If the fruitflies learned how to extract sugars from a starch heavy food, that would be an adaptation. To process that starch as its food instead of fruit sugars is a method of evolution. It's worth noting that starch can be converted in to sugar, but to develop their biology to do that means they can no longer process the straight sugar of a fruit. Over time they can convert back over a matter of generations, but no one bug is going to dynamically adapt depending on what food you place before it. Fruit flies should not, in my understanding, be able to convert something in to sugar since they have no need for such a mechanism. They have to evolve a method to deal with a strained environment where fruit is becoming more scarce.

I really appreciate videos like this. I used to be a creationist, and watching numerous videos like this was instrumental in prompting me to do more research and accept evolution as true.
@@ghost21501My understanding of creationism is that it's the belief that the primary cause of new species isn't through evolution, but through divine creation. I believed adaption could create new varieties, subspecies, or very similar species from an original (like maybe all canines could conceivably descend from the same canine ancestor, but I didn't accept that all land-dwelling tetrapods could come from the same ancestor, that sort of thing). What is your take on what creationists believe?

17:14 Okay, implying that dinosaurs lived alongside humans is ridiculous enough. But is this book (or whatever that image is from) really implying that Ceratosaurus and Deinonychus were passive and ate plants?!
Vay Kek of course, we have all seen how fast bananas can run and how viciously apples fight back when you try to eat them. I’m not even going to talk about turnips!
I know I made the following comment before, but I think it is just as applicable here: What I also find ironic is that one of the main reasons Young Earth Creationists hate our current evolutionary history model is because it shows carnivores existing before Man. They believe that animals being eaten by others is something God would never intend before Original Sin, so they go to great lengths to even depict Tyrannosaurus Rex as being a vegetarian. However, both comedian Lewis Black and Saint Thomas Aquinas made the same argument against that. Lewis Black once made the humorous sarcastic statement that Creationism “teaches kids that people and dinosaurs once lived together in harmony because, prior to original sin, all dinosaurs were vegetarians. Makes sense… those 80 dagger-shaped teeth and huge claws were perfect for chasing down and killing any plants that tried to run away!!!!” Meanwhile, Thomas Aquinas apparently wrote: “In the opinion of some, those animals which now are fierce and kill others, would, in that state, have been tame, not only in regard to man, but also in regard to other animals. But this is quite unreasonable. For the nature of animals was not changed by man's sin, as if those whose nature now it is to devour the flesh of others, would then have lived on herbs, as the lion and falcon. Nor does Bede's gloss on Genesis 1:30, say that trees and herbs were given as food to all animals and birds, but to some. Thus there would have been a natural antipathy between some animals [Summa Theologiae I:96:1 ad 2].” A Christian essentially made the same argument centuries before Charles Darwin was even born.
Poetic Abomination Well, it's also written in the book that these dinosaurs used their strength and sharp teeth to crush fruits into delicious smoothie for their human friends as well...
Interbreeding, food changes, new predators, ecology changes, chemicals, pollution can all cause rapid evolution. Significant evolution can happen in one or two generations.
It's hilarious that when we're talking about dogs or finches people can accept speciation can occur in a few short generations, but when it comes to humans, even when geographically separated for tens of thousands of years and with obvious differences between us, that "we're all the same species" according to scientists

Oh yeah and Lysenko's ideas are not accepted in academia at all. If you had taken a single university genetics class you would know that the only reason he is talked about is to say that his ideas were garbage and damaging to science as a whole, kinda like all the pseudo-science you're spouting. Yes, lots of environmental changes can pressure animals to evolve very quickly. If there isn’t any pressure to evolve via a lack of all of the things listed above, look at the Coelacanth for example. Another thing is that very little changes in DNA can cause big changes (look at dogs) and lots of changes in DNA can cause few changes (look at the various species of rats and mice)

Ewww, we're making pedophile fish

"Adaptation" and evolution are the same damn thing. These small changes become much bigger over large amounts of time. If you think these two concepts are separate, it's because you think there's invisible limits to a lifeform's ability to "adapt", or because you understand "adaptation" as an active motive from the animal. Neither is the case. The only factor is how much each individual, with their slightly changed features, is likely to reproduce. You play this game of chances and statistics over millions of years and lifeforms will slowly but surely evolve.

isn't evolution faster on islands because of the smaller size of populations?
Yup. Smaller populations often inbreed more, thus making recessive genes more likely to appear.
I'm pretty sure it's also because with a smaller gene pool changes to that gene pool from mutations and death will have more of an impact

The big bird/drought/flood lineage is basically Noah’s Ark! C’mon, creationists, the parallels are right there!
I came to this same conclusion when I was like 10 years old lol. I don't know how they still can't wrap their heads around it.

I don't find this surprising. These examples show that the rate of speciation responds to selective pressure. This is how I have always understood evolutionary theory since I first encountered it. (Approximately in the Sixties.)
flamencoprof good one
I still know evolution is a fact but instaces like this just make me confused because it leaves me with an important question. Where are the random mutations?
If evolution is done over a period of time through trial and error through random mutation, how is this possible?
Could this imply evolution is more simple process with some sort of formula? Ive read so many works on evolution and ive been getting into quantum theory (quantum biology specifically) and it seems as if it could be possible that something else is happening rather than random mutation.
I would like to write a fully fleshed out theory but here is a summary:
Rather than evolution being a series of successful random mutations, evolution is actually entirely pre-determined.
Because when he went into space, the zero gravity *environment caused his brain to react and force his DNA to change to better reflect that environment.*
If this were to be true, then it could it be possible to harness that unconscious aspect of the brain in order to force a genetic mutation onto another species?
Juul King thank you. I'm only a student at the moment but going back to college soon and I'm going to talk to some professors about the evidence around this and the implications and maybe we can start with something more fleshed out there.

I did. Turned a batch of fruit flies in to starch flies in a month and all it took was an apple and a potato in a netted rubbermaid bin. Anyone can do it if they want to prove evolution to themselves.
Fragotron McFarland
They were no longer fruitflies, they died when reintroduced to fruit because they were no longer able to process it.
Fragotron McFarland
Think of humans, our hair is due to evolution, our clothes and heat sources are adaptations. We adapt very well as humans, but not because we evolve to do so. We don't grow plates for defense or claws for offense, we adapt with armor and weapons to contend with threats.
I see your bait was successful lol, first reply is a butthurt creationist,
I really appreciate videos like this. I used to be a creationist, and watching numerous videos like this was instrumental in prompting me to do more research and accept evolution as true.
Creationists don't say evolution is false. Don't be mixing the science fiction version of evolution with adaptation.
@@ghost21501My understanding of creationism is that it's the belief that the primary cause of new species isn't through evolution, but through divine creation. 17:14 Okay, implying that dinosaurs lived alongside humans is ridiculous enough. But is this book (or whatever that image is from) really implying that Ceratosaurus and Deinonychus were passive and ate plants?!
Yes, didn't you know? That's what frontal eyes, powerful running legs and a full set of meat-tearing fangs are for: to eat plants.
The dinosaurs live alongside humans.
Vay Kek of course, we have all seen how fast bananas can run and how viciously apples fight back when you try to eat them. I’m not even going to talk about turnips!
I know I made the following comment before, but I think it is just as applicable here:
What I also find ironic is that one of the main reasons Young Earth Creationists hate our current evolutionary history model is because it shows carnivores existing before Man.
Makes sense… those 80 dagger-shaped teeth and huge claws were perfect for chasing down and killing any plants that tried to run away!!!!”
Meanwhile, Thomas Aquinas apparently wrote: “In the opinion of some, those animals which now are fierce and kill others, would, in that state, have been tame, not only in regard to man, but also in regard to other animals. Thus there would have been a natural antipathy between some animals [Summa Theologiae I:96:1 ad 2].”
A Christian essentially made the same argument centuries before Charles Darwin was even born.
Poetic Abomination
Well, it's also written in the book that these dinosaurs used their strength and sharp teeth to crush fruits into delicious smoothie for their human friends as well...
@@BlakeKasgaardAnd yet dogs, with some breeds looking wildly different from one another, are also just part of one species. Wild huh. It's almost like scientists who have spent their lives studying living beings know much more about them than you do
@@adorablehorrorfrombeyond1462 It's almost like modern genetic testing shows that each group of humans have a different admixture of homo sapien DNA with neanderthal and denosovan and other early hominids, and Africans share ~20% of their DNA with an early hominid that neither Whites nor Asians do. We quite literally are different species, and we acknowledged this up until Marxist critical theory and Lyseko biology went mainstream in the last century. No person from the Congo has an IQ even at the global average, no matter what you feed them or what school you send them to. We're DIFFERENT. It's also worth noting that almost every innovative, famous "African-American" was at least half white... Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr, Frederick Douglass, Booker T... look it up if you don't wanna take my word for it.
@@BlakeKasgaard Everything you just said is complete and utter bullshit. I have no idea how someone can get ALL their facts so wrong, it's amazing really.
We share 98,8% of our DNA with chimps, so your 20% figure is just plain wrong. Genetic variation between humans is at most 0,1%; this is a widely available statistic. Oh yeah and Lysenko's ideas are not accepted in academia at all. If you had taken a single university genetics class you would know that the only reason he is talked about is to say that his ideas were garbage and damaging to science as a whole, kinda like all the pseudo-science you're spouting.
The IQ differences between so-called "races" are also bullshit. If you actually knew anything about IQ testing, you would know that it is by no means a reliable metric to measure intelligence.
MLK and Malcolm X's parents are also very much black people, which just proves that you are unable to do a simple google search.
Race science has always been garbage science and it will forever remain so.
*And Welcome back TREY! The channel is indeed've been missed*
Thanks man!
TREY the Explainer
Very Welcome; Awesome works !
What are your thoughts on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom? Also, if you've seen the Cloverfield Paradox, can you do a video on if such a paradox like that in the film is possible and would affect time and space this way? By the way, it's on Netflix.
TREY the Explainer maybe you could make a video on chupacabra
That was one ugly use of the English language.
ah yes the great island of daphne major, to the north you can spot it's small sister island, velma minor
Another fun fact is that they also have an indigenous species of great dane. There was a second one at one point, but we don't talk about that one...

Aren't some elephants growing up with out tusk because of poachers? That's a good example of rapid evolution if true I think.
Alorix yep that’s really good honestly
No it's interbreeding. It's devolution
@@henryautumn37 why?
@@henryautumn37 Devolution would imply that elephants with tusks are more evolved than the ones without and that is simply not a concept that exists. Elephants wihout or smaller tusks simply live to give on their genes and the other ones do not. Thats evolution by natural (or human) selection and nothing is higher or lower because of that. Its simply what works best at the time.
Kinda devolution since tusks are tools for the elephant but at the same time they’re less likely to get poached
Meanwhile in Newest First: "That's not evolution! That's just [describes evolution]"
No it doesnt, it describes breeding. We have hear an Example of an Evolution from a bird to a bird. Its not a new species. You See the Same with White pigeons or dogs who are related from wolves. Would you also call that Evolution? No, ITS breeding. If you could breed a Dog Out of a fish that would be Evolution. But to Breed a smaller Wolf in a different color IS breeding. Doesnt prove anything but breeding Not Evolution.
@@davidcampling795 this video shows that animals do change over time. Now that we both agree that is the truth, then we can consider what happens over millions of years. Based on the environment and predators and prey and all these different factors, its totally possible for an animal that lives in water being "bred" to be better at living outside of water, and then "bred" to have legs and teeth and fur because it's cold, and "bred" to live in packs, and wow suddenly we are at wolves
I love how the lizards transported to the new island by the scientists literally caused an extinction of the native lizards on the island. Great job people!! Doing good lmao
The moment I heard that they were moving lizards I kinda figured something like this would happen. It's basically an invasive species.
"We did it, we saved the city!"
Yeah, that seems rather reckless even for 1971.
I wonder if that would be funded today.
That allways happens
youd think they would have made sure to take some of the native lizards to ensure they wouldnt die out.. i mean.. you could see something like that happening from a mile away.. and we arent researchers... lol ... kinda sloppy and sorta a dick move on their part.. ;)
It’s a bruh moment when you don’t believe in natural selection
it is a bruh moment when you think natural selection creates macro evolution. because there is no evidence of macro evolution. every video that tries to prove macro is actually micro.

There's so much incest it's ridiculous... it is 7 generations of worth of incest!
well... thats a thing I know now
B O I
Does that mean that the Targaryens were trying to make themselves a seperate breed?
Lord Dinosaur Kind of, in many royal families they used incest as a way to keep power in the family, and in many cultures the noble and richer people always look for a way to distinguish them of the rest of people, like wearing jewelry, fashion clothes, having complex hairstyles, eating exotic dishes, allowed them to be the only ones who can do this and that...
It’s bizarre to me that there are still people who don’t believe in evolution
as a European I thought these people were incredibly rare but judging by the comments on the video they are as numerous as ever, its frightening really.

So in order to evolve you have to do keep it within the family? Darn! Habsburgs were ahead of their time.
Not really but yeah inbreeding can speed up the genetic drift
