- Kalakaua Avenue was closed between Seaside Avenue and Duke’s Lane on Saturday afternoon due to heavy flooding. The rain has slowed down since then, but the gloomy weather is not stopping people from going to the beach and walking around Waikiki.

And if the Mayor, Blangiardi, wants to know: The level of the Ala Wai canal was normal. Equal to the level of the ocean. Please stop with the ridiculous idea of spending $600 million dollars to build a wall around the canal. We have already paved enough of paradise. The canal is working perfectly.
Yup. I'm sitting there right now and its still the same level as usual.
But they need their “bonuses”
Why didn't all the flooded water go to the Canel then? Is the Drainage system in waikiki not connected with the Ala Wai Canel??
@550.91D The drainage in Waikiki is not connected to the canal. Waikiki used to be springs and streams and wetlands. Those springs and streams were filled in, and the canal built to stabilize the area. The area that flooded is on the ocean side of the canal. It is a "low" spot in Waikiki. The area landscape has raised banks fronting the ocean and around the canal. In between lies Waikiki. The canal was built to drain water coming down from the mountains. It works perfectly and protects Waikiki from outside flooding threats. The infrastructure and flooding within Waikiki is the main issue currently. The drainage is old. It is also connected to the ocean and drains into the ocean. It got overwhelmed by the amount of rain within a short period of time. The water had nowhere to go. Our leaders are missing this point. They should be focusing on the infrastructure that can not handle the rain capacity. Upgrading drainage, moving electrical systems from the first floors of buildings, etc. The rise of ocean levels is what will eventually flood Waikiki. By the time the canal level gets to the point of breaching, the rest of Waikiki will already be flooded. And that's my point. An ugly wall can not help the situation. We need to refocus on infrastructure within Waikiki.
@kevinhuddleston6438 oh makes sense
CLEAN THE DRAINAGE
You right!!!
☔ Yep, the drain canals running parallel to Kalakaua Ave are choked with overgrown bushes, weed, and trash. You can see it clearly at the corner of King/Kalakaua.
Liquid Sunshine
I was on the bus and watching it tidal wave cars as it passed them was actually kinda fun
as of 830pm tonight (5/18) do not turn your guard away......there IS another mass of clouds/rain coming from the west....will impact Niihau, Kauai and possibly Oahu

OMG 😳 how often does this happen 😳 prayers up for Oahu 🙏
At least the waters receded fast.
How many remember 2006 flood?
40 days n 40 nights…I remember
Yeah, we survived 😅
Why did they call it a kona Low? Kona has nothing to do with this low pressure ridge.
Kona low coz originating Kona direction (SW)
Priced out, rained out and off the island
Which country?
I was just in Hawaii like 3 weeks ago. Thank god we didn’t go this week. 😂
🌺
Brah said waves come out of tires woah
Too bad they don't have an ocean for the water to drain into. Oh wait!
How is it like now?! I’ll be in Honolulu in 2 weeks. Hoping the flood is gone by then. 🙏
It will definitely be gone by then. HOWEVER< BE CAREFUL OF HIKES AND CERTZAIN BEACHES AS THEY CAN BE SLIPPERY OR MUDDY!!!

Rains attacking Waikiki with floods
Kona Low or Cloud Seeding?
They certainly have stratospheric aerosol injection here- no doubt
i blame mainland tourism.
Great infrastructure lol this is inevitable
This ain’t nothing new.
So gross! Bacterial Soup of Cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid, and giardiasis, E. coli infection, salmonellosis, cryptosporidiosis, cyclosporiasis, hemolytic uremic syndrome etc
LEPTOSPIROSIS TOO LOL
Maybe they should spend that money to get rid of the canal entirely and revert the area back to its original ecosystem-wet lands. The canal was a bad idea, put forth by the greed of America’s earliest real estate developers.
so sick of all the rain.
Then you in the wrong place 😂
I love the rain❤
imagine IF you live in the mainland US, got tornadoes, downpours more severe than ours, including HAIL, snowstorms......think about it.
You're a Democrat
@@Waynes-xt9gr The mainland is a huge piece of land. Not all areas have the weather you speak of.
Climate change… just blame climate change…. Works for our government every time … 😅
IT'S the climate change communitie fault.
Next time hawaii bring out the mahu's to stop the rain
*Do you actually own anything? Are you happy?*
