Sikkim: Stuck Between India & China | Part II

  • The 18th century wasn't kind to Sikkim.
Nepalese raids chipped away more and more of the kingdom's territory. However, following the Anglo-Nepalese War, Sikkim gained a new ally: the British. Or, that's at least how it seemed. The British would, nonetheless, pressure the chogyal of Sikkim to cede Darjeeling. This eventually resulted in a diplomatic incident when a British scientific expedition was taken captive in 1849-1850 and, shortly thereafter, Tibetan occupation over fears concerning the nature of Colman Macaulay's planned expedition to Tibet.
Decolonization brought with it new challenges, as Sikkim increasingly found itself caught between an emerging Sino-Indian rivalry. Palden Thondup Namgyal would attempt to navigate this political environment, however, working to maintain Sikkimese autonomy...or possibly even securing independence. He found a receptive audience in Jawaharlal Nehru, but everything changed when Indira Gandhi came to power. The political landscape had changed too, with the communist take over of China, the Indo-Pakistani War, etc.
A final push to maintain the political status quo in Sikkim met with disaster and the kingdom was annexed by India in 1975.

Very interesting. This is a story that isn't very well known here in India, much of that era in general is forgotten. Somewhat sad to see I guess, inevitable as it may be. Thankfully, there isn't much tension in the region today as far as I know.
But hey, they still live in a free country, and their culture is preserved :)

Wtf? India ain't some coloniser like uk, china and Russia and never has been. It never annexed anything, by that logic all the 28 states and 8 UTs in india have been annexed by a part of pangea continent that drifted away from Africa to South asia and india didn't existed until 1947. India is just so diverse in every means that if u see than india itself will break in more than 10+ countries and not only Sikkim that is one of those India's north east part.

@@GhostCountries Sikkim was already a protectorate state of India. There was already a movement going on within it for its merger with India, which was a forgone conclusion. Also, India is a civilizational nation whose political boundaries have a long history of contraction and expansion. Also culturally and civilizationally, Sikkim is more closer to India than to China which it was never a part of.

Your previous video part I rightly distinguish different tribes in sikkim. Original inhabitants are Lepcha and limbu/Tsong and later came Bhutia then like your video points nepali came. Thus, you must not put Tsong in nepali, Tsong are not nepali but distinct tribe of original inhabitant of sikkim. As you show the significant evidence of Lho-Men-Tsong sum showing the original inhabitants of sikkim, this was the treaty between Lepcha, Bhutia and Tsong/limbu.
Hope in next video you'll be careful with historical facts😊

@@GhostCountries Might not have been a bad thing for Sikkim to be part of China since the per capita income of Tibet now is far higher than that of Sikkim.
But then, I feel it would had been highly unlikely for China to absorb it. Sikkim was never part of the border dispute left by the British, unlike Arunachal Pradesh (or South Tibet, as the Chinese called it). China had always recognized Sikkim as an independent state prior to it being annexed by India.
