      Oh, I definitely agree! Sagallo is next to unknown for many and, like you said, Russia's current involvement often receives very little attention, which is ironic considering how much they've garnered influence in certain African countries. I think CAR stands out, but you can also look at more recent events in Mali and Burkina Faso. I know it was only mentioned briefly in the video, but I'm sure we'll revisit the topic when doing other videos.

      @@GhostCountries Well, it's actually a deep topic, but in general, it's completely different from what westerners used to think about colonization. Russian Empire was a continental empire and was always multicultural, so it just couldn't be the same as British Empire. Otherwise it would collapse long before Peter the Great. A lot of scholars still discuss if there was an actual colonization of Tatarstan or Georgia, because most of the lands of the Russian Empire was just a part of an Empire, they didn't stand as protectorates (except Southern region of Central Asia and Northern Caucasus, though) or smh.
      I'm myself mostly have heritage from those “colonized” lands. But if we will look at the conditions of how Russian peasants lived in Russian Empire and compare it with Tatar peasants, or Georgian shepherds, or Kazakh shepherds, then we'll notice that everyone just lived generally bad, while Tatar, Russian, Georgian, Kazakh aristocrats lived in clover.

    • @GhostCountries
      @GhostCountries  Год назад +45

      @@ernstachterhof6481 That's a valid point - especially regarding the still ongoing debate over if the Russian conquest of Tartarstan (and other lands) technically can be labeled "colonization." Honestly, I think a reasonable argument can be made both for and against labeling it as such.
      I think we'll explore the topic more - because it definitely isn't just black and white, like you pointed out - in a stand alone video at some point. Exactly when that will be though, I don't know. 😅But, it certainly is interesting from a historical perspective and, fast forwarding to the present, in seeing how people from places like Tartarstan view their history in relation to modern Russia.

      @Георги Паскалев The fact that you think that is simultaneously funny and sad. Let me guess; you also think that Muscovy/the Russian Empire was always very benevolent to all the peoples it conquered across Asia and Europe? If there were any reprisals towards the conquered, they were surely justified by these ingrates not accepting the benevolent Russian rule, as they should. Russia is obviously the magical nation that somehow grew from a relatively small and peripheral Duchy of Moscow (one among many Rus' Principalites, and one that initially grew in power by collaborating with the Mongol overlords by collecting the tribute from others) to the *largest land empire* in the world. And (according to some Russians) has done that without ever attacking anyone.

    The video is good, I liked it and subscribed, but .. I am a Tatar and like many other Yakuts, Tatars and other peoples of Russia, I condemn the fact that we were called colonies. We are not colonies. We have broad political autonomy and exist in a very comfortable еconomic environment.
    According to this "logic" Brittany is a colony of France, Wales is a colony of England, and Catalonia is a colony of Spain. I understand that the author obviously did not want to somehow offend the republics, but it turned out all the same stupid.

    • @GhostCountries

      Hey, thank you so much for commenting and subscribing! In the video, we were talking about Imperial Russia, not modern Russia, and the conquest of the Khanate of Kazan during the Russo-Kazan Wars. That all being said, we definitely understand there are many different perspectives about what does and doesn't constitute a colony - even among us who made this video - and meant no offense. What I mean is, someone could argue the examples you gave or even others (the British with Ireland, the US with Hawaii, etc.) were also colonies and/or were colonized at one point in their respective histories. Someone else could also make an equally compelling counterargument against using that terminology. Honestly, seeing all the different perspectives relating to this video has made us what to explore the concept of what exactly is a colony in a future video, because there are clearly many differing opinions.

Of course, after a certain point it would no longer make sense to call a country “a colony”. I wouldn’t call the USA a colony today, for example, but it certainly started its life as a colony. In this instance, we are specifically saying that Siberia was colonised by the Russian Empire. I think that’s blatantly true to say. I’m not saying that it is a colony to this day, however.

    This is another deep cut from history that I wasn't aware about. Seems like the Russian Empire felt a bit "left out" with expansion into Africa and they tried to wing it a bit. Russia is so big that it is crazy to think they wanted to expand. I guess despite being so big they always have lacked good access to the oceans. Thats why Vladivostok is so important, but imagine the trip from the far east to Africa back then...far from ideal

    • @GhostCountries
      @GhostCountries  Год назад +12

      You kind of saw that with Germany too; there’s even a word “Torschlusspanik,” which means “gate shut panic” that was used to describe the fear of missing out on the colonial scramble. Although, the word itself dates back to the Medieval period.
      All that being said, Russia or, at least, some in the country were definitely feeling something like that. And even before Sagallo, there was an attempt by Russia to colonize Madagascar! Like you said though, geography was a definite con here because access from the Black Sea was not guaranteed and coming from Vladivostok was not really practical. Something that was definitely showcased during the Russo-Japanese War.

      Oh, it definitely would’ve been a game changer, but exactly to what extent is hard to say. The colony might have just become something like French (or even British) Somaliland, which in the grand scheme of things, amounted to little more than a territorial holding.
      That being said, if the Russians really did put all their energy into Sagallo...who knows. The spread of Orthodoxy in Africa, alongside a link with Ethiopia, might’ve drastically changed the trajectory of the region.
      In terms of trade, I think it would’ve been hard to check the British, but the Russians via Sagallo could’ve definitely been a constant thorn in the Empire’s side, which might’ve resulted in a colonial war of some sort.

    "On February 5, the Cossacks noticed a French squadron consisting of a cruiser and three gunboats. Ashinov received a letter from the messenger with an ultimatum, but not knowing French, he greeted the general, as he did not expect an attack from a country friendly to the Russian Empire. Artillery bombardment of Sagallo began. During the monstrous shelling, six people were killed: Daria Marchenko, Maria Martynova (who was in her last month of pregnancy), her six-year-old son Roman, the children of the "Cossack" Peter Rubtsov - four-year-old Matryona and two-year-old Stepan. Of the "Cossacks", against whom, in fact, this action was taken, only one Mikhail Shevchenko died. French shells destroyed all landings. A shirt was raised over Sagallo as a white flag - Ashinov and the settlers were arrested by the French." From Wikipedia.

      I could actually see that; I mean, it's not so far outside the realm of possibility that Wrangel's Fleet, during the Evacuation of the Crimea, could've traveled from Turkey onward to Sagallo - that is, if Russia had been able to carve out its own colonial holding in Africa. You saw plenty of Whites make their way to other parts of the then collapsing Empire, like the Russian Far East, where you had the Provisional Priamurye Government (aka the last gasp of Imperial Russia); so, maybe something like that could've happened in Sagallo too!

    A little about Achinov(whose surname is actualy Ashinov but nevermind it) he was from one of the cossack families which were relocated from Ukraine to Cuban after 1792. He took word Hetman(Гетьман) for himself because of former ukrainian country Hetmanshchyna(Гетьманщина) in which(as you may guess by it's name) Hetman was the leader. This was one of the two Cossack countries. In other leader of the cossacks was Koshovyi Otaman(Кошовий Отаман) which was also called Hetman Nyzovyi(Гетьман Низовий).
    Also one interesting thing, his wife was great-great-great-granddaughter of one of Hetmanshchyna's Hetman, Mykhailo Khanenko.

    Cossack Hetmanate (Zaporozhian Host) was a Cossack state that formed out of the 1648 Cossack uprising against the Polish/Catholic domination within the Polish-Lithuanian Comonwealth. The title of 'hetman' is even older, but this Cossack leader, Achinov, lived in the 19. century and likely called himself 'hetman' because Cossack leaders did so in the past.

    Russia was at the Berlin conference to divide Africa! Because Russia have colonized all its neighbors, that is why the other colonizers did not allow Russia expand further. Remember: all the kings in Europe were relatives, even the colonial Tsars in Russia were relatives of the kings in Italy, Spain, Portugal, UK, Greece, etc.

    Siberia is so colonized that ~80% in most regions are Russian. And where this is not the case, it is often a subsidized region, where almost everthing relies on money from the federal budget rather than the local one. What is the conditional difference in rights between a resident of Crimea, Komi and the Moscow Region (not to be confused with Moscow)? Not with anything.
