Tip… the solution I find is to have ten pairs of cheap sunglasses. That way you are always falling over sunglasses. It also works with cheese as it’s easier to find one block from 10 large blocks of Mature cheddar scattered about the boat than it is to find one. You can thank me later!
I’m so glad y’all aren’t using T&A for clickbait 😂. Cheers mates 🎉 for 2024 Sailing Brother adventures. When y’all get old like me y’all have plenty of laughs and fond memories as brothers ❤
Unfortunately you did not see a Kiwi, which is a nocturnal bird but a Weka, which is also a flightless bird. Great video that captures quintessential sailing in New Zealand.
The sunglasses story reminds me of how many times my very nearsighted brother would come to me in a panic -" You gotta help me find my glasses cuz I can't see without them!" To which I would reply "Um, Kevin, they're on your f*kin nose!" Speakung of brothers, one reason I love your channel is to see how you two get on together. If my brother and I set out across an ocean in a small sailboat together, only one would be aboard when the trip was over, lol
Really liking this channel! -- QUESTION -- Can you do more of these scenes like @06:50 where you can hear the wind and sea and boat noise with no music? Makes us feel like we are right there with you and that is awesome.
Lin and Larry Pardey. “In 1985, during a voyage to New Zealand, the two purchased a distressed small boatyard and cottage on Kawau Island, 30 miles north of Auckland. This became their home base but did not stop them from voyaging onward. In total, they voyaged together for 40 of the 51 years they spent together.” Wikipedia.
For me a tiller gives more direct contact and "feel" with the boat. Those slight vibrations through the rudder shaft as the boat comes alive and starts creaming along. It seems a more intimate relationship with the boat.
We have the Titan stick insects here in Brisbane. 25 centimetre long body. That's nearly 10 inches for folks from Wales. Then we have the Goliath stick insect which is not small. Then, if you want big ones, go north for the "Lady Gaga-ntuan", it makes the Goliath look miniscule. We have sticks too.
A guy on a quad who has links to Llanelli (Turktown)Sospan fach! I expect he’s linked to the town through rugby, most are. In the 80’s the All blacks were playing here and I invited a load up to the nurses home at Llanelli hospital for a party after we met them in a club(Moonraker) I didn’t expect any to turn up, but low and behold we had nearly the whole team there. I guess the lure of young nurses got the better of them.😉They beat us(Scarlets)and we joked that next time we’d have to have the party before the match, not afterwards.😂 Love your maintenance schedule in how you religiously check your engine temps for cooling blockages. Good drills and what makes you boys great sailers. Enjoy NZ, it’s on my bucket list, but that’s so deep I may as well play lucky dip.🤪
Thanks for the story Bernie ✌️ You can imagine what those rugby guys and the nurses got up to 😉, crochet? We do like to regularly check the engine make sure she is happy
Great episode boys what a lovely island it looked amazing and meeting a guy who’s family originated from Llanelli South Wales amazing that’s where I live Keep these vid’s coming Stay Safe boys 🏴🏴
Very nice, guys. I was about to embark on that sail from Whangarei to Kawau when my transmission failed right off Marsden Cove. I will do it in April instead, but no further south than Auckland for me. You had a lovely day for the hike, my NZ friends say it has been raining and windy most days, so they are coming here to visit in Cape Town where it is windy and sunny and warm and the kitesurfing is awesome.
It was a really good sale and a beautiful day to visit the island. Auckland area is very wet and windy. Hope you get everything sorted with your boat we have all our fingers crossed for you 🙏
Well off to a good start that island looked amazing. I often wonder how people make a living on those islands. Nice to see some Welsh descendants as well. Bet that made you feel more at home guys 👍👍👍
Quite a lot of these islands are habited and we can see why it's beautiful. Quite amazing the first Island we visited there was some Welsh descendants there 💪
Davies from Llanelli! Small world :) Looks wonderful boys thanks for showing us a place that I really don't know much about - except that it is mostly beautiful and your video proves it.
Love your videos. Kawau Island is beautiful. We've also sailed there. Fingers crossed for a tail wind as you head south! Hoping for mor Sunshine for you too. Thanks for sharing
Hi guys. I was in NZ at the beginning of last year and was surprised at how many people were descended from the Welsh. I took out my 3 grandsons Welsh rugby shirts that they wore to a Waikato chieftains game in Hamilton. Diw! The amount of smiles and comments they got was incredible!😊
Starlink connectors are notoriously of poor quality. I and others bypass the connectors and wire them directly and everything works fine. Voids the connector warranty but that is no great loss. Love the vids guys...
I would save the stuffing and make another pillow for like the lower back or something. Never pitch the lovely stuff. I make “bone” pillows that you can use to rest the head and neck against. Just Enuff stuffing for a good “bone” pillow.
I think your right Luke I've had wheel & tiller steering I prefer tiller, you get more feel of being a part of the boat. I've never commented before, watched you since you left whales I'm from the isle of wight UK. You guys are great wish I had your motivation keep on sailing 👍
While I love watching the ocean passages, I'm really more of a coastal sailor myself so I'm looking forward to seeing how circumnavigating NZ compares to your trip around GB. I'm looking forward to learning more about NZ as I don't know much about the coast of it.
Hopefully you will enjoy all these videos sailing around New Zealand. We are super looking forward to exploring this beautiful coastline it will be like around the UK kind of 😁
Great to see you creaming down to Kawau- we ‘ve done that trip a ‘few’ times over the past 40 years in similar conditions (or worse) too - Bon Accord Harbour is always most welcome. The brown birds were weka.
@TheSailingBrothers no very common and easy to find weka. Kiwi are alot harder to see in the wild up there though I have seen afew on kawau. Come to Stewart island plenty down here and the only species of kiwi that isn't fully nocturnal.
Hi Guys, congratulations on the start of your voyage around New Zealand. Luke just to let you know, although other people will have their own opinions. But sailing with a wheel is really nice. Used to have a tiller steered boat but now have a wheel and have to say it's wonderful. If you drive then you will love a wheel as it feels so natural. Keep up the amazing work and look forward to your next instalment.
Thanks forgetting back guys. When you get back to Cardiff sometime in the distant future and many many more adventures look me up, I am based at Cardiff Bay Yacht Club and I would be honoured to have you two fine sailors aboard my boat. Good luck and fair winds to you both.
Wonderful island and it looks like Luke had his sunglasses NOT in Keith's car :P Or is he using Adam's now hehe ^^ I likes the seagulls looking at Luke going "Mine, mine, mine!" ;) (btw nearly 20k subscribers!) ♥
I suspect you'll find more links to Wales in new Zealand 😂😅. Don't know if you heard of zulu waterways, but that's a great app for information on anchorages etc. Fair winds lads
Tiller steering is way better. I have even been caught out on a forecast where it rapidly went from a F5 (forecast) to a F7 and the autopilot couldn't cope and it went hairy very quickly, fortunately on a run!! Tillers all the way.
Don't lose your sunglasses. Tie them on. You are in latitudes with very high UV exposure levels. The sun burns your skin and also damages your eyes. Excellent video guys.
We have the standard dish however that works up to a speed of 9 knots. It will only work offshore with the priority toggle in the app on. at a cost of £1.70 a GB. Starlink classifies offshore about 10 nautical miles off the coast
@@TheSailingBrothersI understand that starlink standard will lock out if it loses view of satellite, due to rough seas, but if yours works that sounds great . Seems expensive, but having high speed internet to some people is a must. Another pair of great vloggers' Steve and judy of Sailing fairisle did a vlog recently and did some major alterations to dish which so far works well saving money as well
Question. Why would you rather run the engine than sail close hauled to port then close hauled to starboard to get to the same place? Is it a matter of money, convenience or what? Just curious, Dave again, Loving your channel :)
At the time we had very old stretched sails especially the Genoa was very out of shape. It would have been impossible to sail close enough to make any headway Cheers Dave 🙂
Great video again.... interested to know why you switch motors on when sailing head to wind....why not close haul? I am a relatively new small dinghy sailor so just interested?
Thank you for motivating us kiwis to get out there on our boats cause that looked like amazing fun true memories
Our pleasure 😁
Good to hear your circumnavigation with a new stock of gravy.Well done boys.
Yes! Thank you! Must have delicious gravy 😋
Greetings from the Florida Keys one of your patreons. Y’all had an amazing 2023. Blessings and safety to y’all for 2024.
Yay you are an absolute legend 💪✨
I could have sworn the sign said"historical gardens and toilets." 😄😄😄

None of that on here just pure real sailing ⛵ making memories for life 🙏
Unfortunately you did not see a Kiwi, which is a nocturnal bird but a Weka, which is also a flightless bird. Great video that captures quintessential sailing in New Zealand.
Oh right thanks for the info 😊
Good luck boys on your NZ adventure. Adam needs a tempur pillow , very sleek ,firm yet yielding!
I will have to Google that pillow. Sounds right up my street 😜
Such a wonderful video. Keep it up, living the brotherly love. Together you are an amazing team.
We get on very well and make a fantastic sailing team 💯
😂😂😂 so it's not just me that takes pillows apart to fine tune the comfort factor 😂👍
I thought I was the only one Graham 🤣🤣
Looks like a gorgeous anchorage and a great place to stop. Keep living the dream 👍

Yes you are right about the tiller it does give way more feel. Much better 😁
Can't wait until you guys get to Australia... That stick insect would have gone for your jugular. Take care...

So good to see kawau again, havent made it out there for a few years now. Even included an old colleague/ acquaintance lol.
Such a beautiful island 🏝️
Adam chucked 'em overboard.
Yep 🤣🤣
Im sorry guys but at the start of your video i thought you had found one of those friendly sheep i warned you about, but it was only a pillow.😊
Now it is. Definitely started out as a sheep though. Poor thing.
NZ where men are men and sheep are careful! Only joking, we loved our visits there and yes it rained on Xmas day!
Taffy's are known by the pommies as sheep staggers, the boys won't be offended. Hehehe

Here we go again. good luck Guys 👍👍 Oh, whats brown and sticky ?????

Just be careful with the hoodie laces near a running engine. It can end very badly. Love your work!
Great point!
That would be a really bad day
Have you ever tried sheet to tiller steering as a backup plan? It’s a useful skill to learn.
We have tried it and it works 💪
Looks gorgeous there . I hope you made another pillow with the extra stuffing he he . X
I got rid of the filling in the end 😌
Fabulous

My husband does the exact same with his glasses!

Wow!!!!! What a place. So envious
So outstandingly beautiful
Beautiful scenery. It's amazing how many places in the world one can find peacocks and seagulls. Where did all the people go?
The peacocks and seagulls have eaten all the people 🤣🤣🤣
@@TheSailingBrothers That's funny !
Peacocks were introduced to kawau by George grey. Along with a number of other animals and plants from Australia, South Africa and Britain mainly
Well off to a good start that island looked amazing. I often wonder how people make a living on those islands. Nice to see some Welsh descendants as well. Bet that made you feel more at home guys 👍👍👍

Loved this video. The peacocks only display when courting, I believe. That is a beautiful place.
Thank you Robert 😊
I thought the peacocks would have fancied Luke 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Check the cable is pushed into both ends, especially the dish end. I've seen a few comments about this with new users being fooled by it
We literally checked everything and researched it. We have a new cable and no problem now
Davies from Llanelli! Small world :) Looks wonderful boys thanks for showing us a place that I really don't know much about - except that it is mostly beautiful and your video proves it.
It really is a small world. The island was incredible such an amazing little place
Wow... well done boys. That looks amazing. ❤ Glad to see that the sunglasses turned up.... 😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣 yeah he loses them all the time
Ooh shiny new anchor!
Definitely 💯
amazing
🤩
Love your videos. Kawau Island is beautiful. We've also sailed there.

Well done lads! Smashing it! 🙂
Thank you 🙌👍😁
Great start to sailing around NZ. If that was a kiwi you seen your very lucky as they are normally nocturnal and very secretive 😋
Someone said in the comments it wasn't actually a kiwi it was something else 😕
I just looked at some boats in Marsden cove marina 😂
Probably beautiful and expensive Gavin 😭
Super safe sailing and hope you guy's stocked up well on the Cheese, look forward to your next video Exellant video's from Swansea
Great sailing and well stocked up 😁

That's going to be epic too 😎
Good old Atlas!
A beautiful place to live!!!
We agree!

Stuffy nose down under and that weather reminds you of your homeland eh 😊
Have been suffering with hay fever here and the weather has been a little bit rubbish but starting to clear up nicely now 😎
It looks very nice gentlemen, well done!

Have never heard of that app but I will download it and give it a go thanks 👍

Answer the bloody question then ' do you know where his sunglasses are!?' 😂
I don't know 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Don't lose your sunglasses. Tie them on. You are in latitudes with very high UV exposure levels. The sun burns your skin and also damages your eyes. Excellent video guys.
Sunglasses all the way then 😎😎😎😎😎
I dont think it was a kiwi . It was probably weka , they are kind of similar, but kiwis only come out at night and have a long beak.
Yes I don't think it was a kiwi after all 🤣
You should see them at Stewart island if you get that far and go out at night . Round the sports field at the back of town .
Are they a standard ethernet cable? if so you can get one from a local store rather than wait...
It has a strange connection on the only starlink offer we've ordered another one now and it arrived so all good 👍
@@TheSailingBrothers don’t you love proprietary connections where standard ones would do ;-)
How will Starlink work at sea without alteration to the dish , have you got the standard dish or maritime ?

How do you arrange deliveries when you are always on the move & at anchor, not in port?

Great video again.... interested to know why you switch motors on when sailing head to wind....why not close haul? I am a relatively new small dinghy sailor so just interested?
Our Genny is stretched out of shape which makes it difficult close hauled
