Can’t believe you didn’t just file a square hole in the roller fitting! Well done on your trip so far. Might be better to put a broader wooden backing plate below deck and some support under the fitting at the bow where it only seems to partially rest on a part of the toerail capping.
The stainless was way too thick to be filing square holes in it. The deck is very thick solid fiberglass with large washers no need for a black in plate as there is little load on the bowel roller. There isn't much space on the roof of the sail locker for a large back in plate. Appreciate your comments though
Ah ha, thanks for showing the Penmure sign so I could locate you in Auckland. I recall anchoring in Bayswater which the yachties called "Blowswater" because it frequently blew hard and was a very choppy anchorage. Enjoy the big city.
No problem Kevin. No one enjoys a choppy blowy Anchorage makes it very difficult to get off the boat 😭. We enjoyed the city and the sky Tower was amazing 🤩
After seeing those Mares Tails, I wondered what you were gonna get, 3 days worth of fierce winds. In an anchorage and big wind, I found letting the snubber down 2 or 3 meters lessened the angle & eased the snatching, plus plenty of scope of course. Kind Regards. Barnacle Bern SW Wales 👍👍
Do other places not get winds like that on a regular basis. That is fairly common most places around nz and 40 knots isn't all that high. Avg daily wind in Auckland used to be around the 20 to 30 knots from memory.
So envious of you sailing in NZ, what a gorgeous place and lovely people!! But we have the Welsh Cheese Company..., I owe you a trip when you get back! 🧀⛵
Too funny when Adam tries to make Luke remember nautical terms :D Congratz on the new anchor and great work on the installation. Under deck, a chainplate-like construction may be better to catch up the forces from the new heavy anchor? Looking forward to the next hooley-tour ;)
Lucas rubbish at nautical terms 😂😂😂😂 The anchor is a game changer it's absolutely fantastic. The deck is solid fiberglass and is very strong. There is not much need to put any further strengthening underneath as they're really isn't any pressure pulling on it apart from the weight of the anchor. The snubber and Samson post takes the pressure 😎
I could not believe it when you ended up at Panmure Yacht Club where I was a member for many years. Good to see the club highlighted in your video. Also your trip to Rangitoto Usland to fit your new anchor system. The mud in that Anchorage is legendary. Gale force winds up the river are common and I was once marooned for four days on my boat. I hope you enjoyed your stay at our club and I will continue to watch your trip around New Zealand with interest.
Great to see you at PYBC and anchored securely in Islington Bay, Rangitoto Island. - in 1900’s it was called Drunks Bay - departing sailing ships stopped there to dry out the crew before setting off.!🤣
I have done the same exact change on my anchors. I had the same cqr and changed to the same Rocna 15 kg and I'm so glad I did. I would though instead use a big backing plate instead of the 4 small ones on each bolt. Plus, support the anchor roller further front
We will never go back to a cqr anchor after this upgrade it's fantastic. Would love to have had a large backing plate however there is just not enough room underneath 😕
Congrats on your new Rocna, may you now sleep better at night. I think I would have used sickaflex under the wood of the Bow Roller and the Bow Roller itself. Lovely job though. Any holes I drill are always off centre. Without you we wouldn’t be watching thank you
The Rocna will change your life. The problem with CQR anchors is that they more often than not they don't set properly. And the only way to hold is to put a load of chain down. The biggest problem with a Rocna is breaking it out when it comes time to lift it - a good problem to have. I've had a Rocna for about 12 years.
Luckily we have been able to dive on our old cqr anchor and every time we've done this it's laying on its side! Sometimes you have to physically try and set it yourself under the water. This Rocna is absolutely 🤩
Guys.... a suggestion .... put a couple of through bolts at the apex of the toe rail .... there is too much side leverage as the 4 bolts you have put in are at the rear of the roller guide.
No worries ... love watching you guys "go for it" ... proud. Omokoroa is my home and NE NZ my sailing ground ... jealous as hell watching your great blog as I am presently working overseas. Stay safe and see you on the water!
Use a square file to make the holes square in the bow roller fitting and the coach bolts will then be captive ! The will turn when you try to tighten the nuts if you don’t!
Brilliant thanks for keeping me sain..loving the new bit of gear..I do love the old cqr they stand the test of time..but what you got ther is brilliant..Worth the wait in gold..all the best lads keep it coming 💯🥳🧀⛵️⚓️
Funny thing, my good genuine CQR would not dig in hard sand, but my poorly built worn out Chinese copy CQR would. The pivot was so worn it was at risk of departing. As my dad used to say, "Anvils and anchors rarely benefit from moving parts", so Rocnas it is for us.
Brings back memories with family yacht....pile mooring at Panmure before moving into Half Moon Bay Marina the day it opened....many weekend's spent at Islington Bay ( Rangitoto)...great viewing , wonderful journey .
Well done on the new anchor and roller system, you managed to do a fine job with very limited equipment. Now I'm waiting for the rightfull final resting place for the cqr ......burial at sea 😂😂😂
Looks like that Anchor will be a game changer for you guys. Did you put any sealer on the wood and bolts? To stop any water ingress. Well done guys neat job.
Swapped my cqr for Rocna 15 on 32ft boat. I rest peacefully at anchor! It does grab well! I’ve see advice to put 3 links of chain between the anchor and swivel. Better articulation and less sideways strain on the swivel. Maybe you’ve done that. Check it out.
Congrats. The likely problem with the CQR was the low weight. I think you would have done better with a 35 lb. You needed a heavier anchor anyway, so you have that with the new.
Great video guys and congratulations on the 20K subs. We have a Rocna on our Bav 37, it's a brilliant anchor and it really digs in. We find keeping the chain vertical when recovering the anchor really helps unstick it. Keep up the good work.
After using it for a couple of weeks now we find it is a total game changer what a great anchor. We also find being directly over the anchor or riding over it helps to pull it out 😉
@@TheSailingBrothers Ours didn't hold once. It came up with a gallon paint can on the point. Also we anchored in a bad spot. 5-6 knots run out tide, with a reversal of flow direction at 2:00 AM. I got up expecting the anchor to pull out, but it didn't. It held solid when the boat was pulling in the opposite direction.
Greetings Men. Your acquisition of a Rocna anchor was a terrific move and Atlas is very thankful. Eventually, you'll want to replace the CQR with a new piece of equipment. Anchors are like safety gear. Atlas sure looks fine from the sky. Rocna on men and turn the music up loud. 💪💪🌠🌠
We did exactly the same. After trying over and over to set our CQR in hard sand. We went and bought a 20 kilo Rocna. Not a problem since, except that a 20 is too good for a 33 foot boat, so getting us off the bottom was interesting. Read the instructions, and chains jump on gypsys when the chain is worn! Check that chain. Now we have 2 Rocnas. If only you were Home and Away fans. You can anchor just over the other side of their beach at 33.586356 S, 151.321915 E.
We could never get our cqr to set in hard sand. Every time we dived on the anchor it was laying on its side. Have had no problems at all with our new Rocna sets every time 😎. Not sure about home and away 🤣
Great job, delicious content! Be interested to hear if you notice any effect sailing with the weight of spare anchor up there. Id may be tempted to move it into bilge if you have space. Either way enjoy I'm sure you'll sleep better with new hook.
She is a heavy displacement boat so having weight forward doesn't affect her. You should see all the stuff we have packed into the boat and the water line doesn't change 😁
Great updates boys.I've got a 15 Rocna with 10mm chain on my 32ft Targa and after experiences with other set ups now i sleep when its blowing.Good job.Delicious.👍
I have 25 mtrs of 8mm chain and 30 mtrs of rope, I always put out all the chain and enough rope to suit the depth, no snubber reqd, Manson supreme anchor, I sleep well
We won't recognise the boat soon. These new anchors are so much better, we have a plough 15kg it's awesome (in mud we need a breaker). Looking at the swivel joint on your old CQR I would not want it as a spare. My old one here is still solid.
We have to be careful retrieving the anchor and pulling it out as it berries itself 🤯 I don't think we will be using our old anchor again to be honest fit for the bin
Well done, lads ! So, you've had your initiation into the gales of the Tasman Sea! They are usually caused by little nuisances we call Tasman Sea lows. They commonly sneak in behind departing Tasman Sea high pressure systems in a sort of meteorological Change of the Guard. There is a different kind of Tasman low which Australians term East Coast lows since they originate in the waters offshore of the Aussie Eastern Seaboard. ECL's have also earned for themselves a fearsome reputation for bad behaviour! Better to remain at your mooring when any of these bad boys are knocking around the joint! Fair-weather sailing ⛵️ for you guys from here on! 😂
I have the same windless as you two. Glad I watched this video as I now know not to back down on the anchor without a snubber! Thanks guys! Really enjoying the videos by the way😊
Should never do that with the chain held solely on a windlass no matter what sort it is. Always have some physical securement as no windlass is designed to be put under load
Considering how you often prefer to anchor I was always interested in how you were managing in practice with the CQR. I had a baby Rocna on my little 24ft Achilles - ok, perhaps overkill, but I was always securely anchored. They're great. My current boat came with a CQR and I have bought a larger Rocna for it too but need to fit a bow roller myself, so this was really useful to see how you did it. Many thanks.
I don't know how he managed to safely anchor the boat halfway around the world with our old anchor. We were always the boat dragging through The Anchorage. Will never go back now because this Rocna is fantastic 😍
Hey, Guys. Congratz on your Rocna. I bought a Rocna after a night of dragging around on an old fortress type anchor. I tested it in 35 knots winds one night, in a mud bottom. Great hold. BUT THEN watched S/V Panople's YT channel and his testing. That Rocna with the roll bar did NOT do well in his testing. Go look up his vids. He is in my neck of the woods, off the coast of Maine USA. The Rocna Vulcan (newer design) fares much better, btw. Hmmm.
You two are starting to look a bit flash now with your starlink, new anchor and your hats! Love your progress, not just the miles but how’s far you’ve both come too. Neighbours slightly sad 😂 But you, two truly inspirational 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼🧀🧀😁
Nice! -- QUESTION -- Is there an episode that showes what you paid for the sailboat and what it cost to get it ready to sail around the world? Would love to learn the actual cost of this.
Nice anchor that. Did you have any rust spots afterwards. I once cut a chain on deck and spent the next few weeks using oxalic acid to remove all the orange dots. They do go away eventually though. I also have a very low furler and my chain almost touches the underside of the furler drum.
Any metal work on Deck will leave rust spots especially steel wool. Learn this the hard way! I don't think this boat was designed for a large bow roller at the front
Going to be such a game changer to have a modern anchor and have it stored on the roller 🎉 I'm slightly concerned that there is a lot of leverage given the long distance from the end of the bow roller to the bolts. Obviously not a problem when using a snubber. Unfortunately with the design of the bulwarks there isn't an easy solution. I wonder if it might reduce the twisting load on the 4 bolts by fitting side chocks to the top of the bulwark. But I'm probably over cautious.
Side-loading on that long bow roller was a concern I had too - especially as the Bro's were only able to use 4 of the available 6 through-bolt holes. ... I not quite sure how best to prevent side-loading in this case. Very sturdy chocks might work if installed very tightly against the bow roller unit, as far forward as possible(?)
With the design of boat and the design of barrel roller it's not the ideal situation. We would have loved all six bolts through an enlarge back in plates but they just isn't room underneath either.
@@TheSailingBrothers we were fortunate as we were able to do our work ashore with the mast down. So we got the original fitting modified. We did a lot of strengthening but yes at the end of the process getting underneath to fit the nuts onto the bolts was a huge pain. Given you are doing this while afloat I don't know what else you could do. I guess the big tests will be when breaking waves hit the stowed anchor at sea.
Well done lads . Ok just a heads up re the Bukh engine . Have you flushed the engine block out at all IE via the drain taps ?? Reason I ask they are known to silt up and then the lower part of the block can over heat and I don't need to tell you what can happen so its a good idea to check and its caused by when in silt heavy water the sand builds up in the engine block and I would not wish that to happen to you guys . Have fun and enjoy the sailing
Looks pretty good.. but it’s soft wood and after a whip it will have absorbed enough water, then if you didn’t replace it for a good hard wood (or protected it with epoxy or used a hard construction plastic) it will be difficult to and one abrupt pull due to a wave can rip out the bolds the next one will pull could break the bolts through the deck.. so it looks great but it needs an update later on. Those bolds with a small plate aren’t going to stop it. I would str suggest to always use a snubber and later on replace the small rings for one large stainless backing plate. Better do it before damage is done
We are looking to replace the wood with some hardwood. May even in case it in poxy. Currently looking at improving the back in plates although space is a real issue. Cheers
Didn't see the sealing work. Did you do anything at the through-deck holes to prevent penetration by water into the deck's core or did you just rely on a lot of sealant (4300?, 5200?) between the block and the deck?
Our deck has no core it's solid fiberglass same as the coach roof. We used in adhesive sealant same as sikaflex. Looking to replace the piece of wood with hardwood 👍
Nice timing for me - I just purchased a Rocna 15 and also need to add an extension (plates out with an additional roller).. I have seen a review of the Rocna by a somewhat famous anchor-reviewer (forget his name/channel) and he gave it a very poor 180 veer reset review... Let us know how it does resetting after a 180 veer.. I am a bit nervous after watching that review..
I do like my Rocna #10 (24' & 4,500 lb sailboat). Very few times have I had trouble setting the hook. Once set, no issues. But I've only tested it once (30-35kt wind in a mud flat). It did just fine.
Hi there lads! Good to see that your faithful old anchor has found a graceful retirement! May he RIP. The replacement anchor certainly looks to be Man for the Job! However, I do have one little worry not about the anchor itself, but rather the installation. Sorry guys! The problem is probably all mine but here goes anyway....my question is; wouldn't it make more sense for the block of wood to be mounted UNDER the deck? Please hear me out - as it is, I can foresee a situation where the whole bloody lot is ripped off the deck because the block isn't doing the job intended for it. Everything is still dependent on the bolts hanging on just at the moment when they are most needed! I have noticed that you did anticipate the problem that I'm talking about by placing a couple of metal pieces under the nuts of the securing bolts that you're using BUT can you really have confidence in that order òf things? You have 110kts. of hurricane outside the cabin doing its' damndest to break the mooring in any way that it can find + you're facing a lee shore composed of the meanest - looking rocks you have ever seen! If you wind up there it's going to end with 'closer thy God to thee ' I hope that you will accept my comments as they are intended; constructive suggestions for the benefit of your adventures for this and those to come!😊😂
Hi David thanks for the message. I would have loved to fit a steel plate or a wooden block underneath however there it's not room on the ceiling for anything due to the amount of stuff that's already on the ceiling, inner stay ,Samsung post I will have another look to see if I can fit anything bigger to spread the load. When we anchor the snubber takes the weight around the large Samson Post. We really do appreciate your advice 🙏
Well done guys 🫶congrats on your 20k subscribers 💙🩵💙🩵 New anchor installation was well done 👍 Remember the force from pulling the top should be counteracted below ⬇️deck too.. some metal plate underneath deck 🌟🌟🌟 There are a few ideas on best practice in comments .. hate to see the new anchor pull your decking apart .. 🥰🥰 Love watching your videos🤗🤗⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️ Adam question 🙋♀️..your sinuses seem blocked ?? been listening to your nose noise ..when you speak could have an infection in your sinuses that needs treatment?? Just wondering 😍🤗🥰⛵️⛵️❤️..
Thanks for the congrats 🎉 Unfortunately they just isn't space under the deck because of the Samsung Post, inner stay, stay sail block. I will see if I can squeeze anything in there. Yes I've had lots of issues with my sinuses. How to quite a few infections in there and really bad hay fever here 😭
Time spent at the front end saves time, money and ball-ache at the other. Those bolts will sit tight and be less prone to spin even if pressure is lost on the nuts and spring washers.

As an addendum to fiberglassing the breast hook it's important to make sure that the deck is heavily glassed to the hull. Toodaloo

Was it straight?

So long as the block is well secured thats better. Atlas knew this and she helped you to do it better.

It's a really good feeling knowing you have really good ground tackle 💪
Manukau, Auckland NZ. Four sessions in one day. Panmure {pronounced PAN MEWR by kiwi's}
Perfect thank you 🙂
Nice work on the bow roller and impressive anchor ! 😎
Thanks Bruce we love it 😄
Love seeing the upgrades and the happiness they bring! Right on!
It's amazing 🤩
that be a drill for iron stuffy, not wood guys....lol
Oh 😂😂
Congratulations on the new anchor ⚓️
Thank you Henry 🙂
I have 25 mtrs of 8mm chain and 30 mtrs of rope, I always put out all the chain and enough rope to suit the depth, no snubber reqd, Manson supreme anchor, I sleep well
Good choice plenty of scope equals a good night sleep 😴
Awesome one Lads .
💪😁⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵
We won't recognise the boat soon. These new anchors are so much better, we have a plough 15kg it's awesome (in mud we need a breaker). Looking at the swivel joint on your old CQR I would not want it as a spare. My old one here is still solid.
We have to be careful retrieving the anchor and pulling it out as it berries itself 🤯
I don't think we will be using our old anchor again to be honest fit for the bin
Epic stuff boys. Superb upgrade. ❤
We sleep soundly at night 🌉
Well done, lads ! So, you've had your initiation into the gales of the Tasman Sea! They are usually caused by little nuisances we call Tasman Sea lows. They commonly sneak in behind departing
Tasman Sea high pressure systems in a sort of meteorological Change of the Guard.
Thank you for the very interesting explanation David. We will expect more of these once we're on the west coast sailing North ✌️
Aye Aye!🤣
I would love to know how many miles of sea floor have been ploughed by cqrs they were ok 50 years ago.Rocnas are awesome.
Technology has moved on. Back in the day everyone had them ploughing through the sand or laying on its side 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have the same windless as you two. Glad I watched this video as I now know not to back down on the anchor without a snubber! Thanks guys! Really enjoying the videos by the way😊
Yes we couldn't believe how it jumped in the Gypsy thought we had smashed it up 😭
Should never do that with the chain held solely on a windlass no matter what sort it is.
Hmmm.
We have been using our anchor for the last four weeks in mud and sand we find it absolutely fantastic never fails to set first time and holds solid 😉
Don't forget that the weight of the chain is as important.
We should start calling you the neighbours , Brothers lol
Yeah 😂😂😂😂
You two are starting to look a bit flash now with your starlink, new anchor and your hats! Love your progress, not just the miles but how’s far you’ve both come too. Neighbours slightly sad 😂 But you, two truly inspirational 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼🧀🧀😁
We don't want to come across all posh 😂😂😂😂. Watching neighbours is like a childhood thing 😁
@@TheSailingBrothers 😂😂😂 Watched Neighbours after school everyday too, but back in the 80’s 😂 You’re better entertainment these days 😅
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Saw this thought of you 2 - real Aussie neighbours 😂😂 ruclips.net/video/9QCgqQdmr0M/видео.htmlsi=9AOkiZXXgNxPEDzq
OK I'm a believer!!
💪
Hey are you guys heading down to Lyttelton or Akaroa harbours. Let me know id love to catch up with you guys
Not sure yet we may be on our way ⛵😁
Nice! -- QUESTION -- Is there an episode that showes what you paid for the sailboat and what it cost to get it ready to sail around the world? Would love to learn the actual cost of this.
We have a boat tour video . Check out the playlists 😁
Why is the new anchor an improvement over the CQR we had CQRs for 30 years? It must be an improvement in technology I surmise!
Much better technology now. CQR would never set we would always drag
I own a rocna 10kg for my 3.5T boat. Holding is good!!!
I bet it is 🤘
Going to be such a game changer to have a modern anchor and have it stored on the roller 🎉
I'm slightly concerned that there is a lot of leverage given the long distance from the end of the bow roller to the bolts.
We have never checked this Howard something I think we need to do. Thanks for your advice really appreciate it buddy 🙏
I would've had the bow roller tied to the boat until it was secured,
Looks pretty good.. but it’s soft wood and after a whip it will have absorbed enough water, then if you didn’t replace it for a good hard wood (or protected it with epoxy or used a hard construction plastic) it will be difficult to and one abrupt pull due to a wave can rip out the bolds the next one will pull could break the bolts through the deck.. so it looks great but it needs an update later on.
Cheers
❤
⛵⛵⛵
Didn't see the sealing work. Did you do anything at the through-deck holes to prevent penetration by water into the deck's core or did you just rely on a lot of sealant (4300?, 5200?) between the block and the deck?
The area under the inner fore stay should be beefed up and heavily glassed all the way and down the hull tying the deck to the hull. Thanks
Our deck has no core it's solid fiberglass same as the coach roof. We used in adhesive sealant same as sikaflex. Looking to replace the piece of wood with hardwood 👍
At 26'29" - is it a 15 kg anchor? (=~33lb)? I have a related Rocna anchor (Vulcan 15) on my 32' boat - very happy with it.
Yes that's correct we love it ☺️
Nice timing for me - I just purchased a Rocna 15 and also need to add an extension (plates out with an additional roller).. I have seen a review of the Rocna by a somewhat famous anchor-reviewer (forget his name/channel) and he gave it a very poor 180 veer reset review... Let us know how it does resetting after a 180 veer.. I am a bit nervous after watching that review..
We will let you know what it's like to live with after a couple of months ✌️
S/V Panope. I watched all his testing (after) I purchased my Rocna.
@@Dave-SailsAway Yes - him .. that .. And so, have you found his report to be accurate? Do you like your Rocna..? Do tell. :)
@@Dave-SailsAway lol - also me... lol
If you wind up there it's going to end with 'closer thy God to thee '
I hope that you will accept my comments as they are intended; constructive suggestions for the benefit of your adventures for this and those to come!😊😂
Hi David thanks for the message.
Well done guys 🫶congrats on your 20k subscribers 💙🩵💙🩵
New anchor installation was well done 👍
Remember the force from pulling the top should be counteracted below ⬇️deck too.. some metal plate underneath deck 🌟🌟🌟
There are a few ideas on best practice in comments .. hate to see the new anchor pull your decking apart .. 🥰🥰
Love watching your videos🤗🤗⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️
Adam question 🙋♀️..your sinuses seem blocked ?? been listening to your nose noise ..when you speak could have an infection in your sinuses that needs treatment?? Just wondering 😍🤗🥰⛵️⛵️❤️..
Thanks for the congrats 🎉
Unfortunately they just isn't space under the deck because of the Samsung Post, inner stay, stay sail block. I will see if I can squeeze anything in there. Yes I've had lots of issues with my sinuses. How to quite a few infections in there and really bad hay fever here 😭
Adam .. definitely worth getting your sinuses cleaned out 😢..🫶🩵🫶
Wait just a couple minutes the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car!!
😂😂😂😂😂
Id pay money to sleep on a boat like that during a storm.
It is rather soothing 😜
Sweet new anchor, I think you mentioned you had a sabre 27 I’m looking at them do you rate it at all ?👊 fin or bilge
We had the fin. Absolutely fantastic solid safe little boat
Good to know Appreciate your reply
Just out of interest why did you not file the roller holes out to square so the bolts would not spin when tightened?
Time spent at the front end saves time, money and ball-ache at the other. Those bolts will sit tight and be less prone to spin even if pressure is lost on the nuts and spring washers.
That would have taken such a long time to do. We've used those particular bolts before and once they grip they never spin 🤟
Hey guys🙂Just wondering if you’re still posting on Instagram? Last post was in October
I am going to update Instagram with new photos 😁
Great job guys, nice to see Rangitoto again too!
Thanks again! 😁😁
