Hi guys. Check your connections to the lithium batteries. You have the positive and negative leads connected to the first battery this means the load will favour the first battery and the pair will not share the load equally. Move one of the leads onto the other battery then the pair of batteries will be balanced during use. Positive to the first battery and negative to the second battery or vice versa. Enjoy the upgrade. 👍
Can you explain that? Your theory would surely only make sence if you had a significant distance (such as a separate battery in the bow dedicated for a windlass) or (more likely) you connected your battery bank with undersized cables. Otherwise, the ohms resistance (and therefore the volt drop) between batteries is so negligible that there is no reason why you couldn't take all your loads from any one of the batteries in the bank. In fact, for switching (circuit breaker) purposes you definitely do want them connected at a single point.
What a diamond geyser Phil is, just goes to show how you are making friends wherever you go. Enjoyed the electrics installation as all I know about it is that when you turm a switch or key, something happens 😅.
Great work Sailors. A terrific addition to Atlas. Thanks to Phil and his wife for hosting the two of you. Atlas, darling, you've got some more juice to you...enjoy! 😁🌠
How good was that explanation about the system that you were installing. Several times I have had it explained to me but have never managed to grasp the concept. The thing I love about you two boys is that you’re emotions are genuine, they doesn’t come over as contrived.
If I was a Lithium company I would be hiring you people as sales persons. You show so much appreciation and glee at every item. How many people would. Be smelling a control panel or stroking a generator. Just love you guys. Keep up the good work.
Hey guys great video. Promise me one thing…..you will visit George Sound in Fiordland and anchor right beside the waterfall at the mountain end of the Sound. Just before you get there put a line over and catch some blue cod it is the nicest fish you will eat. Fillet it onto two fillets, sprinkle them with salt and pepper, squeeze some lemon on them and if you have it just a tiny drizzle of whisky. Wrap in tinfoil and bake at 180 for about 5 minutes. Serve with baby potatoes, butter and yes…..CHEESE! Enjoy. Mark from Wellington……currently in Turkey checking on our boat build!
Looks like you are having a fantastic time in NZ . Great to see you get the Lithium batteries installed safely. Now you have some piece of mind and can enjoy you sail around NZ . Well done Guys 👍👍👍👍
Well done boys, safer sailing with current forecasts, but more importantly, think of all the cheese you'll be able to refrigerate! I learned a lot too, we've yet to do this on our boat.
Learnt more about fitting lithium to my boat in last 30mins than in years, you explained it so even I could understand thanks. And Happy NewYear Bros cheers 🍻.
Just a perfect end to the year. Every best wish to you both for 2024 and thank you so much for all the brilliant episodes and editing over the past year. Btw as an aside to your cheese ‘habit’ (I’m allergic to it!) when Captain James Cook set out to find NZ and Australia (don’t ask what he thought of the latter) he took 185 pounds of cheese!!
Thanks guys, congrats on the new electrical system. Wishing you both a healthy, happy and delicious 2024 ! Looking very much forward to lots of more adventures in the coming year.
Adam with the proud nasal voice of a new LiFePo4 owner ;) Great work and amazing helpers! I think the NZ turn will be one of the highlights ever on the channel ^^
Top job guys Phil and Tim have really helped you further along the path of sailing the globe and all those RUclips presentations should always be on time 👏👏👏👏
Dog gone it guys ~ y'll took a bite out of all the new setup , life is good, happy boat happy sailor. Now time for a cheese break, Old Crock block cheese if you see it try some...Thx guys
Absolutely love your explanation of how you placed batteries and wires on this project.Best of luck on your travels.Happy new years guys.i really enjoy watching your adventures. from canada
Great video on your new power system. Nicely explained and all the video work doesn’t go unnoticed. I agree, a new poem is definitely needed after this install!! Happy New year!! 🇨🇦
Hi, nice job. I have a couple of comments, it is advisable to protect the cables against chafing as they pass through the panels, this tends to work well with screwed fittings, which would need to be oversized to enable the lugs to pass through. It is better to upgrade the liquid lead acid starter battery for an AGM gel lead acid battery, as the gel form won’t be able to spill and leak and eat the hull of the boat. In the cable tidying phase you may need to lengthen the cable lengths to create tidy runs like train tracks. It’s a process that is best started with the end in mind. Cheers
HAPPY NEW YEAR 😀 Well done to Tim for the great donation !!! Well done to Phil and his wife for all their help and supprt !!! Keep trucking !!!! Nigel from Day 1 😎
It’s the hidden things that make the big differences! Great to see you got there, and nice to see some of the people you have come across along the way. Happy new year!
Happy New Year guys. A big thank you to Phil giving our lads a big boost. I need the same on mine and this has given me a few ideas. I just need to save dome pennies 😁
Well done boys, happy days, I bet it was purgatory doing the crossing with dodgy lead acid batteries knowing lovely lithium was in arms reach😫😫😫😫. Cracking
Love the channel. Thanks for taking us along. I also love that you don't make us sit through ad reads like most other channels nowadays. Hopefully someday your adventure takes you up to the Great Lakes up here in the US. There's some great sailing up here and taking the St Lawrence route would be an adventure in itself. Happy travels!
Thanks we really appreciate that super glad you are enjoying the channel. There are no annoying adverts sponsors on this channel. It would be pretty cool to visit the West Coast of the states 😁
Glad its going well for you. Just a warning about the BtoB chargers, they can get very hot. Mine are on an unrestricted bulk head but still need a small fan blowing air over them in hot weather
What a nice neat fit. Love smaller boats. So much easier to do projects like this. Well done. Yes a huge difference. You will love it. Discharge will be so much longer and charge so much quicker. Enjoy.
happy new year and fair winds for 2024, great installation can you add to your schematic how your solor panels are connected and a possible shore charging, look forward to more Delicious episodes
Wishing you both a very Happy New Year and I am really delighted to see you getting the new electrical upgrades. The lithium batteries will revolutionise your life onboard Atlas and so well deserved. You both seem to have a good grasp of how everything works but a couple of words of warning. Victron gear is absolutely wonderful but those Orion DC to DC chargers do get hot and the software will reduce their output slightly (Approx -4 to -6 Amps) when this happens. Ensuring good air circulation is essential and/or installing 120mm 12v temperature controlled computer fans on the back will certainly help. More important - those high output Balmar alternators can burn out if you run them to the maximum while charging lithiums even when using the MC614 regulator and temperature sensor. Use the “belt tension” setting and temperature adjustment to keep the output to possibly 60% of their maximum output will significantly increase the life of the alternator. You can also fit a simple on/off switch to the DC to DC chargers to switch off one DC to DC and have the output reduced (30 Amps). This will ensure your very expensive Balmar alternator lasts! I found out all of this info the expensive way and after having read a lot of forums online! From the forums the Balmar AT165 & AT200 versions certainly did give problems and possibly why they are now replaced by the XT170 & XT250.
It's going to be a fantastic 2024 with all the new technology on board. Lithium batteries are super amazing and starlink means we have internet anywhere at sea, endless weather forecast. Thank you for all the information we really do appreciate that it's Gold dust 🙏
Hello there Sailing Brother’s, my husband is jealous because you’ve got lithium batteries before us 😊. Happy New Year from us here in rainy, windy Cardiff 🎉. Look forward to to further adventures in 2024. Congratulations on having a Starlink too, are you going to use the Marine package?
Lithium batteries have already been a game changer they are absolutely amazing. Our mum said the weather has been pretty rubbish back home sorry about that 😔. Starlink is super amazing as well. We are using the marine package it's not cheap
Hi Both hope you are having fun on your around NZ trip! I am fitting new LIFEPO4 batteries with new panels. I saw this video and I see you have a new Alternator and two victron DC 30 chargers. Just asking what the new alternator max current delivers as output? As you have two DC-DC 30 chargers I understand it can handle 60amps between the two?
So - you have your alternator charging a lead acid start battery which, in turn, can charge your lithium batteries through a dc to dc converter. You have your solar connected to the lithium house bank but presumably, that can also charge the start bank through the dc to dc converter? Also, did you have an old fashioned manual and an automatic combiner and if you did, did you remove both (or maybe you didn't, seeing as you were starting from the house bank)? Finally, what capacity did you install on your new lithium house bank? Asking as i am about to launch into the same project.
Our solar setup can only charge the lithium and not our startup battery. We don't know what a combiner is. We didn't remove anything so I guess we didn't have one. Lithium batteries are 270 AH. We absolutely love the setup 🙂
Just a comment: I have found that the various (so called) smart or intelligent chargers / regulators are all designed as if they have exclusive, independent control of the batteries ie they are not designed to communicate with each other. My manuals for my solar controller; smart alternator controller and my (shore power/generator fed) smart charger make no reference to operating more than one at the same time (which might even make it a warranty violation). Such things didnt matter when devices were dumb (a volt is a volt) but do now. For instance, my field current feed to the alternator trips out if i run the engine, if i also have solar output. Consequently i have installed breakers on the solar panels (to switch out when running the engine). Similarly, i never run the engine while on shore power. A combination of solar and generator fed smart charger doesn't throw up any fault condition but, of course, the smart charger cannot go through its normal cycling procedures as it will be reading the solar controller output, not the battery itself. God only knows what i would do if i also had a wind generator. These smart devices have, in fact, made life more complicated. Of course, Lithium (that I have no experience of) has a chip buried within the battery itself, adding another layer to consider.
@TheSailingBrothers Think of it like having an iPhone against one ear and a Samsung phone on the other. They both assume that they have your exclusive attention and are not designed to coordinate with each other.
Hey guys Happy new year to you both, and certainly santa brought you some good gifts for your boat and new sheets too, you both so blessed and hope you continue to be blessed in the new year, Im looking forward to your new year of adventures. all the best, kind regard Robert.
well cheese and crackers I got, but I still have my luxury yacht on order but I will have to wait until my lottory win comes in. looking forward to relaxing and watching a few of your sailing episodes as sometimes I like to watch two in a row. guys would love to see you catch the big fish and the excitment it brings you when you have caught a fish, Hey how about a nice cheese sauce for the fish you may catch, recon that would be deliciouse. with a glass of cider. regards Robert
hey fellas, someone is getting there wires crossed when it comes to paralleling those batteries, you should parallel lithiums to a bus bar, not to each other, Nigel Calder covers this in his how to parallel batteries video.- google The BEST way to Parallel Batteries on a Boat | Ask The Expert with NIGEL CALDER
Thank you so much Tim for looking after these guys. People like you and Phil and his missus help restore faith in good bastardness. God bless.
Thank you Peter 😁
Kudos to the wonderful friends donating and fitting your new Lithium charging system. Awesome stuff.
We couldn't have done it without them 😍
Thank you to Phil and his wife for their hospitality! Congratulations guys!
They really are an amazing couple 😄
Thanks for your feedback we have recently changed the setup after they couple of comments just like yours 😄
Can you explain that? Your theory would surely only make sence if you had a significant distance (such as a separate battery in the bow dedicated for a windlass) or (more likely) you connected your battery bank with undersized cables. How good was that explanation about the system that you were installing. Several times I have had it explained to me but have never managed to grasp the concept. The thing I love about you two boys is that you’re emotions are genuine, they doesn’t come over as contrived.
Really glad you understood Luke's explanation. I still find it confusing as it's not my thing electricals 🤣🤣.
If I was a Lithium company I would be hiring you people as sales persons. You show so much appreciation and glee at every item. How many people would. Be smelling a control panel or stroking a generator. Just love you guys. Keep up the good work.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I just think we are completely mad sometimes

Hello there Sailing Brother’s, my husband is jealous because you’ve got lithium batteries before us 😊. Happy New Year from us here in rainy, windy Cardiff 🎉. Look forward to to further adventures in 2024. Congratulations on having a Starlink too, are you going to use the Marine package?

Happy new year guys. 👏
Happy New Year Ian 🎉
Great vid had no bloody idea what all that meant with the battery setup.. All darkarts to me
It's very confusing to me 🤣🤣
Happy new year boyo’s
Happy new year 🎊
Balmars eat belts. You need a high quality belt. If you dont already. Gates green stripes are best. But bf goodyear work well.
Yes, agreed. Ideally fit a serpentine belt kit for a bullet proof solution.
Thanks for the advice we will get some decent belts 😉
Hi Both hope you are having fun on your around NZ trip!
I am fitting new LIFEPO4 batteries with new panels. I saw this video and I see you have a new Alternator and two victron DC 30 chargers. Just asking what the new alternator max current delivers as output? As you have two DC-DC 30 chargers I understand it can handle 60amps between the two?
Hey Stuart yes having the best time here. Max output is 70 amps on this particular alternator. Yes that's correct 😀
Thanks. Fair winds both!

Happy new year. How is Atlas after her heart transplant?
She is now loving life 😁
Electrics that work properly = delicious.
It's absolutely perfect 😁
The Bukh is a star. Conrods weigh 7kg apiece! 😂😂
Absolute bulletproof engine 🚂
Was wondering is it advisable and possible to turn off charging when maximum propulsion is needed, to buck wind and current in a difficult situation?
will make very little difference
Listeing to some of Nigel Calders system, would make no difference except at top speed were this cut out was possible.@@tmog1000
Yes we have an option to turn off the DC to DC charges for more power on the engine
👍

at least you will be warm and toasty in the winter when the lithium battery catches fire
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for sharing with us, much respect! ❤️
My pleasure! 😁
