Give it a rest, most of Aretha’s biggest hits , as well as Pickett, Joe Tex, recorded their biggest hits with white country musicians at Muscle Schoals and American sound studios ! Also many of Gladys biggest hits are actually covers of country music hits and she admitted she loved country songs as did The Pointer Sisters ! All races contribute to great music. Ben E King said when he was with the Drifters , they were stunned that the label wanted to use violins on their records, something unheard of in R&B ! He said those violins are the distinctive sound on their records and credit must be given !

The Pips were never actually signed to Vee Jay. Vee Jay bought the master of "Every Beat Of My Heart" from HunTom Records, to which The Pips [were] signed at the time. When The Pips moved to Fury Records, they re-recorded "Every Beat Of My Heart", resulting in the song being released/issued by THREE different labels, simultaneously. This unique situation also resulted in The Pips being re-christened 'Gladys Knight & The Pips' to distinguish the LEGITIMATE Fury recording/release from the other two...

My mom invested a lot of money into records (45s), albums, 12 inch, cassettes, 8 tracks, as well as CDs. & with all those labels stickers VeeJay wasn’t sounding too familiar until you started naming people like Jonathan Butler & the Dells. But it wasn’t until you mentioned Gene Chandler & showed the actual label sticker is what really sealed the deal. Rainbow 65 & the 81 version 🔥🔥🔥. Still play them.

Excellent Story. When I saw an early release of an Beatles record and it said Vee Jay. I didn't understand because I always thought they were always with Warner Brothers. Now I know the back story . I also didn't know Vee Jay black owned. I would love to see this made into a movie 🎬

They were with Capitol ! Vee jay and another label got copies of Beatles songs illegally and released on their label contributing to their demise after suits. I thought the Beatles were always overrated !

Just a quick note: I'm pretty sure King Records was based in Cincinnati,Ohio ( vs Chicago ), and started by Syd Nathan.....
