Great topic! I'm a middle-aged Haitian American man from Flatbush, Brooklyn, and I've always had a fascination with organized crime, as a result, I'm a Mob historian of over forty years in counting. I'm also a serious collector of fine music and therefore a historian of jazz music as well. The Mob and jazz music and culture have always been in bed together. They went together like hand in glove. What I don't hear about is how these fly Black jazz musicians influenced the Italian, Jewish, and Irish gangsters in terms of style and swagger! The same way that hip-hop does today. I don't have a problem with segregation during this time because history has proven that Black communities were much more prosperous during these times. And I certainly wouldn't want to be around evil and hateful people! The biggest problem that I had during this time is how these brilliant Black American musicians were taken advantage of in terms of their monies and publishing! The record industry today owes these families reparations. I highly recommend an outstanding book on jazz music and the Mob called Dangerous Rhythms by T.J. English. It's both highly informative and entertaining. A classic in the field.
And the jews, italians,Irish ran organized crime after only 20,30,years since coming to America while the blacks dressed good some tradeoff?and I suppose shaft got his leather trench coat from africa( check nazi high command).
Rest Easy to all of the Legends. Legends never die. Thank you Harry Belafonte for the memories. My favorite storyteller, CU thank you for a good story about the Mob. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. Peace and Blessings everyone.
I was a big fan of Sammy Davis, Jr. Read both of his books, watched many of his movies and tv projects as a young child in the late sixties. He had enormous talent. You definitely should do an entire series on this legendary man.

Thank you so much for sharing- I never thought of the mob being so heavily involved in our music. The only person I knew who was connected was Sammy because of old blue eyes.
I really enjoyed this. Very informative. Do more of these brethren. On another note, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Al Capone stories are the funniest on this episode. Their egos were insanely preposterous. Lol.
So that part in 5 heartbeats was about Jackie Wilson being hung upside down on the umpteen floor??? Wow and I see why most of these rappers are being killed and got someidiot taking the fall just so their parents and children could be taken care of, but if you look at it they're putting their children at risk because now when they get older they gone have to repay that debt off, ish is sad ASF, sick and sad ASF
Yay I just started following you but I thought you no longer posted because your videos are older. I really enjoy the content. I learn a lot and share your videos
Now, this is the best commentary on the entertainment industry I've ever heard; no stammering, slang speech or "you don't know what you're talking about" word phishing until a lightbulb moment kicks in. I really appreciate your interview as though a fly on the wall delivery.
They did Dorothy dandridge like that when she stuck her foot in pool water they made pool boy drain the pool and clean it.. 😔💔 how they black's back them days was just horrible 😡
Very, very well researched video. You touched on a lot of stuff that most people still don’t know about……even all these decades onward. Everything you said was 100% on point. There was literally not one black artist from the 40’s up until the mid 80’s who was not under the control of the mob. Even Barry Gordy was in deep with the mob…..they fronted the money for him to start Motown, got his artists on the radio and booked his acts in the best venues. In those days, you could not be in the music business without the mob having their say so. Ironically, the business got worse after the mob was pushed out. Once the corporate Illuminati took over the industry, it became what it is now……talentless, boring and demonic.
We should've kept our talent and music to ourselves. Even if we were performing it in a juke joint in the woods somewhere, like in "The Color Purple". If they wanna hear us, let them come to where we are and pay us. That's how we would've built wealth to have our own hotels and music companies. We need to stop going to them. They don't treat us right or pay us right. Even to this day. They get ALL the money while we do all the work.
Very good video! lol@ "back then" Some of those guys were scripted actors, carrying out psychological warfare. there are videos out there of them getting exposed.
I’m born and raised in Las Vegas. But yes, back in those days if you were black, you had to stay off Jackson Street in a bungalow hotel,,well motel cove hotel on DST. or you would have to stay on Bonanza Street which is where we have the Moulin Rouge.
Elvis loved Jackie , they had a close friendship . But it was mutual. Jackie told a reporter , I took as much from Elvis as he did from me. Even Sam Cooke knew about their friendship as he and Jackie toured together. Elvis paid Jackie’s medical bills in 1975. Etta James who had met Elvis as an upstart at 19 and really liked him. She was so happy Elvis paid those bills. Jackie on the other hand was asked by a DJ what records he’d play if he was a DJ . Jackie replied, “ Elvis records , all day long “ !
Loray White was beautiful just as beautiful as Kim. Sammy should have been thanking Loray instead of strangling her. She saved his life. If she hadn't said yes to marrying him, he would be dead.
Lauren Bacall who was Humphrey Bogart´s wife at the time was the one credited with the name Rat Pack. The story goes that Lauren had a guest over to the house and she asked where was Humphrey to which she replied somewhere with his Rat Pack of friends. So they never called themselves that but it was the name that Frank and his crew became known by because they carried on in the same manner, Drinking, Gambling, Smoking Cigars etc.

Yes t.j English has written many great books on the mob plus a excellent book on nyc in the 60s savage city.
Now if blacks knew the rest of black history and African history not just pop culture maybe they'd be as strong as the white ethnics.
He should do Sonny Liston. He was connected to the mob and lived a very mysterious life. Such a sad story.
I know Sonny's younger 1st cousin...
