My grandma love this song and really love it as he would always put on this song whenever I came to visit. There song Pass the Dutchie is probably their most popular song.
Pass the Dutchie is such a SWEET as 🥧 song! If dessert were a song. ☺️ But on a somber note, so sorry for how things fell apart within Musical Youth. Hope the surviving members are healing. Rest in paradise, Patrick Waite and Freddie 'Junior' Waite. 😔🙏🏾❤️🕊️
@danavixen6274 And did you know that Musical Youth were signed to PWL which was Pete Waterman's record label in the U.K. Of course this isn't mentioned in this video! Funny Pete Waterman and I stress hated the song Pass The Dutchie when he first heard it LOL! Pete "Mix Master" Hammond remixed many of the bands early hits including Pass The Dutchie and Sixteen. 🏝🎸🕺💽
The music business is so cruel, but I’m glad Dennis and Michael are still performing. I’m glad that Kelvin is still performing as well. R.I.P. to Patrick and Freddie Waite. Awesome video,Juicy Pop!
Wow. The other day I was feeling nostalgic when I was discussing with one of the drivers in the company, whom I suspected to be one of the younger members of the band, but was now a full-grown man: he assured me that he was not whom I thought he was, but he actually grew up about that time, and he indeed knew a few things here and there, about members of that band, but he'd rather not speak about it extensively - only that a few of them currently work normal jobs (now I understand).
I graduated from college in 1983. Came home and vegged out in front of the TV, watching MTV. "Pass the Dutchie" was on high rotation. And I loved it. Still do. 🧡🧡

I bought their ablum when I was sixteen. However, I didn’t realize how talented they were until a month ago. Since then, I've been listening to their first album every day. I've also listened to their new album and to Kelvin's album. Some good stuff too. It hurt my heart to realize how the record company didn’t know who they'd signed. They needed to stick to reggae, not R&B. Well, at least we have the music they made as a legacy.
I first saw Musical Youth on a children's programme in England shortly before they became famous, and I also saw them in concert when they visited Barbados in 1984. I have often wondered what became of them because I had heard stories that were not too pleasant.
Interesting video that needed to be shown, l always wondered what happened to musical youth over the years and l never seen any content creators covered them only up until now. It truly ashame they started off so well, then there career took nosedive just after they second album was released. Anyway there first track pass the dutchie pon the left hand side, will always be one of my favourite childhood reggae classic covers in the 80's a century where great music was produced and airplayed a lot on the radio.
I remember seeing the band in a coach in Galway City in the west of Ireland circa early 1992, their faces peering oit s d looking utterly fed up. This was an excellent cautionary tale to the perils of the music biz
Their track: "Pass the dutché" was a very great hit back then. Other tracks like "don't blame the youths" "007" "Watcha talkin'bout" "Tell me why" & "16," among many others were all beautiful hits back then. Also their great colabo with Donna Summer on her album: "She works hard for the money" made them so popular in the hearts of many music lovers. All of a sudden, they just faded into music oblivion. May the souls of the fallen ones among them rest in peace.
What happened to Denis and Michael does not sound like a tragic downfall. Denis, in particular, seems to have a very strong work ethic and has done well for himself. And Michael's final quote on here showed that he has got the right attitude as well.
They may have been improperly touched and no it wasn’t Michael(who was innocent) that did it. Patrick turned to drugs, Junior became mentally ill, and Kelvin seemed like he had ptsd on the ‘UnSung episode, and has said he will never return to the group.
My son is now 48, but was under 11 when Mystical Youth first came to the U.S. They were performing in our city around my son's birthday. I took five boys, including my son, to the concert, and did they have a great time!! Loved the Mystical Youth and that song!
Fun fact. Musical Youth did the theme tune for "Jim'll Fix It" in 1983, it was the B side of Never Gonna Give You Up. The Jim in question was of course the notorious Jimmy Savile. I wonder if they ever met...
I'm a dj producer & had some interaction with relatives of the bands manager in the 90s. I was astonished to hear how they were mismanaged & exploited. . Musical Youth had sponsorship from a sports company. The incompetent manager did not negotiate & sign for a percentage of sales .They just went to the warehouse & left with a trolley & handful of items.
First time hearing their song pass the Dutchie was in the live action Scooby doo film. Can’t believe Musical youth were the first Black British group to be featured on mtv.
That interview was hilarious! I love it! Also loved the interview with Whitney Houston. That was the most epic interview ever. Whitney chewed Wendy up and spit her out. But, Wendy is the GOAT of all interviews. Miss Wendy….wishing her well!
This song comes on at my job at least once a day (print warehouse) I’m out there bustin my ass stalking the clock waiting 2 take my lunch break n I sing the “how does it feel when u got no food” part xtra loud n chuckle to myself don’t judge me lol love this song they deserved better
they stole from each other, the industry stole from all of them, many of them are junkies and they spend all their time arguing about royalty payments in the courts, trash,
fun fact my brother was supposed to be the lead singer of this group , my mom was friends with Fredrick and i was sitting at the table listening to them discussing the band coming together ,my brother had to sing a few tracks to seal the deal , my brother sang off key on purpose as he didnt want to be a lead singer and then the next thing we knew Dennis was in the group. I wonder what would have happened if he didnt sing off key on purpose.
it is an old SKA song from the late 50s early 60s and they changed a few words to get it by the censors in the UK, there is nothing original, they are trying to claim intellectual property payments for it as the original artist is dead, there thieves and the original artist has a grand daughter living in prince town but she cant afford to come to England to appear in the courts and fight or her money, black junkies ripping a black girl off in Jamaica, who would have thought that. . .
I hated this song, I hated them, and still do. .I did read a few years ago that they had ripped each other off for money and were arguing in the courts about royalty payments and some of them had descended into habitual drug use, I was pleased when I read that TBH
I always find it strange that a song about pot was edited to become a song about an actual pot, was adopted as a song about weed by stoners and now very few know about or have heard the original. Sad their careers and lives went so badly.
These young fellows also recorded a minor Hit duo with the Late Great Donna Summer, their longevity in the business however was very Brief, as usual these individuals in the entertainment business always end up without making any real 🤑 during Short tenure in Music, how sad😮.
There was me thinking, all this time, that the Dutchie in question was a Dutch Master split and rerolled with weed. 🙄 I still think that. Dutch ovens are hot and heavy. No one's passing that...pan de left hand side 😝
They never should have signed to MCA Records. They were a simple British reggae band and should have stayed that way. They should have signed to an independent label like Trojan Records or Greensleeves under Jet Star, one of the premier British reggae labels at the time. Stay with your own Black people and make pure reggae songs and the money would come in steadily. Instead, MCA pushed them too hard, gave them "royalty" cheques of £1 million [filmed for television in front of their family] without telling them that the label was extracting all costs out their profits and had them recording pop songs that didn't fit them. At the end, one singer had a nervous breakdown after experimenting with drugs, he drifts further into addiction and mental illness and dies and the band are broke because MCA UK (Universal Music) claimed all of the publishing and licensing rights for decades after the band was dropped from the label.
3:15 This isn’t entirely correct. They didn’t perform live on TOTP until December of 1982 for a Christmas special. Before then, they were just showing their music videos
We all know what the music and tv industry do to children behind the scenes 😖it's why most of them turn to d..r..u..g use to try and forget but unfortunately it ends badly for them.

Pass the dutchie , I used to play this song a lot when I was 19. Ok the memories 😊
I passed the dutchie from coast to coast, with my man over here come rockin it most.
I was 9, and pressed rewind many times.

Love that song, recently bought their album on LP, I had 0 clue they were UK, always thought they were Jamaican
I saw that Unsung episode too. One of the saddest stories in the music industry.
Great story on Musical Youth

This was the JAM back inna day. Still sounds good. I had suuuuch a crush on the drummer. R.I.P.
I remember buying .that song in 82 , sad to know that two of the guys have passed on.
I like the style and vibe on this channel, nice work. You just earned another sub!
Sheesh this was sad, I never knew they were replaced by New Edition.
Pass the dutchie was the s#!+ back when I was little. They were very talented. Should've had more hits
I don’t think I’ve heard of them before, but this was a very sad story. I’m going to check these brotha’s music out. 🙏🏿
What a great song! I remember loving and singing it over and over!!
These young guys were primed to be the next Jackson Five!....Until one day, New Edition came along and stole their thunder😔
What ?
Nah, the industry did that.
Different Genre..
Na our Jackson Five was five star
Ever hear of The Sylvers? Or The Osmonds who were thought of as a white version initially?

I remember that. He seemed like such a tortured soul.
Wouldn't surprise me. Predators everywhere especially in the music bisness

Missy Elliott's song "Pass da Blunt" samples Pass the Dutchie
I think didn't hear Missy's song yet, but I love Pass the Dutchie probably since the 1990s, and I was born in 81.
They changed the title? I know it as "Pass The Dutch"...
C'mon. I assume almost everyone thought "dutchie" was referring to a blunt rolled with a Dutch Masters cigar.
No, a cooking pot, so what I heard.
It's a remake of pass the catchy, which is a spliff
I went to school with these lads ✌🏻💙
fun fact my brother was supposed to be the lead singer of this group , my mom was friends with Fredrick and i was sitting at the table listening to them discussing the band coming together ,my brother had to sing a few tracks to seal the deal , my brother sang off key on purpose as he didnt want to be a lead singer and then the next thing we knew Dennis was in the group. Pass the dutchie is a British Classic
Pass the dutchie i must have been 6-7 loved that track
Now I've seen this I realised I was 4 when it came out
Didn't they sang with donna summers unconditional love
Yes Rich they did.
She took them on her global tour in 1983. I saw them in Atlantic City that year and they're also on the DVD A hot Summer Night with Donna.

What is it about child stars in general that never seems to end well? Why are they never protected when they need it most!
This area of making a living is lined with sadness
I hated this song, I hated them, and still do. .I did read a few years ago that they had ripped each other off for money and were arguing in the courts about royalty payments and some of them had descended into habitual drug use, I was pleased when I read that TBH
Sadly a number of bands got ripped off during this period The Baycity Rollers who were huge at their peak suddenly found all the money had gone
Why did you have to say nothing untoward happened. Sick of him still being villified. 😳 He's been cleared. May MJ continue to RIP.
Because this is MY channel that I control, not you.
We have to qualify that they weren’t left alone with Jackson … how is there still no definitive answer on Jackson.

It’s funny that that word “dutchie” was used as a euphemism for a joint, but everybody knew that these boys were talking about passing a joint.
They passed the Deutsche mark to the left hand thief
