Gangstarr was so dope. RIP Guru! You're definitely hearing an NY sound in there. It's typically referred as boom bap and it's the 90s signature NY sound. DJ Premier (the producer) was the most influential producer of that sound and also produced Nas Is Like. Wu Tang is also considered boom-bap, but their producer, RZA, had a little different spin. Both are sample heavy producers, but RZA incorporated a lot more kung fu movie samples and had a dirtier/grimier sound whereas Premier's sound is a little cleaner. DJ Premier produced one of my favorite songs called Doobie Ashtray by Devin the Dude. Devin is a southern artist and the beat will probably be more to your liking. You should check it out. You should also check out Ain't Nuttin Changed (Queensbridge to Cali Remix), That song is produced by Premier but features a sound I think you'll like more and has MC Eiht, a west coast OG. Premier worked with MC Eiht on an album recently. There's a song with MC Eiht, DJ Premier, and WC that you might dig called Represent Like This. I love Gangstarr, one of my favorite groups, but Guru (the rapper) was a very polarizing rapper. Some people found his style very plain/boring. I'd be curious to see you react to some very recent songs - Dababy - Intro and Tee Grizzley - Satish.
Been waiting for the Gang Starr dirty! Glad you enjoyed. DJ Premier is widely regarded as the greatest hip hop dj ever. Should definitely check out some more from them!

Musically that was the 90s NY sound. Although Guru is from Boston and DJ Premier is from Texas, they both repped NY. Gang Starr was formed in NY, and DJ Premier is a corner stone for the sound of that whole Era. He produced beats for Biggie, Jay Z, Jeru, etc. And Rza, who formed the basis of Wu-Tangs sound used to compete with Premier. They would hear each other's hits on the radio and be like, oh yeah wait till you hear the shit I got coming out!
