The thunderstorm wasn’t luck. You think in 19 years of planning every detail Andy didn’t wait a few extra days or weeks till a thunderstorm was forecast? The noise of the storm was necessary to drown out his hammering of the pipe. The rain was necessary to wash him clean with the bar of soap they found. Without the storm his escape plan didn’t work.
we won't know how long he had to wait for a storm to show up though. It might have been months of waiting because everything else was in place. Then when the forecast showed a storm it was all go, with the swapping of shoes. etc.
Yeah, but even with the hammering of a pipe, I don't think they would suspected. I mean who thinks "wow. A bang. That means Dusfraine has gone through the wall".
So many great reactions! I follow a few of the reactors featured here. I must say that the last guy cracked me up!😂 i particularly loved how he pets his dog's tummy when he's "triggered" Fun compilation ❤

What would have happened if Andy crawled all the way out of the pipe only to find there was some sort of steel grid welded or bolted to the end that he couldn't get past? He had no way to check beforehand. To make his escape he really had to take a leap of faith that he'd be able to get out of the pipe.
@@Deathbird_Mitch That was my thought as well, but I don't specifically remember that happening in the movie. Now I'll have to watch the movie again to look for that. Given how well planned his escape was, and over a long period of time, it would seem he wouldn't have left something like that to chance. If he hadn't been able to get out of the end of the pipe, there's no way he could have made it back to his cell. He would have been trapped In my mind, it was part of his "get busy living, or get busy dying" attitude. He didn't know if the end of the pipe would be open. If it worked and he escaped, great. If he died stuck at the end of that pipe, or was recaptured(and probably killed by the warden for the attempt), he had had enough, and was ready to try, whether it worked or not.
Remember he still had his hammer. He would of found away. They show a cop holding it where they found muddy clothes and the bar of soap. I wonder the same thing tell I saw the hammer.
@@dongilleo9743 Wasn't there a point where he looked for plans for the prison in his library creation or somewhere else as he got more and more access to things? I've never understood the sewage gushing upward like that. It would only do that if the pipe were pressurized, and the pipe couldn't be pressurized if he was able to just crawl out the end like that. The smell would definitely gush up like that, but most likely not even a drop of the sewage would've splashed up through the new hole.
Nit pick: 500 yards is not "just short of half a mile." One mile is 1,760 yards, half of which is 880 yards. 500 yards is closer to 1/4 mile than 1/2 mile. But like I said, I'm picking nits here. I watched this movie when it originally released in movie theatres. For a story with so many ups and downs, this part was such an amazing payoff. There were literal gasps from the audience when the tunnel was revealed.
My favorite story about this one is that Hadley wasn’t supposed to be in the shot when they showed the hole, but Clancy Brown knew it would be an iconic shot, and made sure he got into the frame.
What a cool channel, I love it! Suggestions: Braveheart when the girl dies, and his final death. Chernobyl the rooftop scene or in the hospital seeing her husband scene. Any of the emotional moments in The Chosen. The Godfather horse scene or tollbooth scene. Apollo 13 the lift off, explosion, or reentry scenes.
Double-sided tape at the bottom and the sides of the poster. And then he probably used some very very light cold glue to pull the poster toward him a little bit so that it would be fastened against the wall.
The poster was only attached at the top! A weight of some kind held the bottom of the poster so all Andy had to do while he was digging is lift the bottom and crawl in and out! The poster would automatically hang closed! 😊
Raquel Welch was in "One Million Years BC" in 1966. Minus 50 = 1916. Not many cars then. How thick is a prison wall ? This one sounded like 10 feet. But probably more like 1 - 2. But with lots of steel rods ...
To think the original plan was to have Tom Cruise play Andy, and Clint Eastwood was on of three men they wanted for Red. I just can't see anyone else being the leads for this movie
Does anyone else have issue that the pipe didn’t lead to a septic tank or a sewer system… it just runs into a ditch nearby. I mean that pipe could have been a drainage pipe but they should be completely different systems
Makes sense. Obviously it wouldn't be real sewage or dirty water for the health of both Tim Robbins & the crew, and mud/silt settles, so to keep it a consistent color they'd need some sort of dye, and food as dye is generally safe (barring allergies). Props & Special Effects departments are so amazing at figuring stuff like this out.
You saw a quick shot of Andy digging on his wall in the beginning. The poster was taped to the wall at two spots on the wall, but the weight of the poster itself made it hang straight down. He was standing with the poster hanging over his head. On the final night he just crawled into the tunnel and the poster will hang over the hole just as it has done so for many years.
@@ToniMcGinty well apart from the fact it was taut over the hole, could he have manoeuvred it with his feet as he emerges head first out the other end and certainly no room to turn around.
The only thing here that doesn’t make sense to me is: can you really bash a hole in a thick steel sewage pipe big enough to crawl through with just a rock you can hold in one hand, in the short time that a thunderstorm comes and goes?
Those large sewer pipes are not steel. They are usually "clay tiles" Many drainage pipes are tiles, molded by placing clay in a mold and drying or baking in a large oven. They are like ceramic and will break if rough handled. Tar is used on the joints of clay pipe as a sealant. Also drainage pipes can be made of cast iron, which will also break if hammered on, but they are not made of steel.
