I wish you would upload more lessons on this channel, or even on your website. I personally would pay as much as I can to learn from your lessons. You're helping me and others who are passionate about painting so much. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Great video, I have seen lots and lots of horse painters, many in photorealism and they will do all the detail at the beginning. they paint so that one area is completely finished before moving on to the next one and it was making me think that I should do it that way, now I know that I don't need to. One belief of mine that you have really shattered is that in order to paint a horse you have to know them very well. A lot of people try to paint them but because they have no knowledge of horse and haven't spent any time with them the paintings end up looking wrong. I am surrounded by horses every day so see it straight away. You have completely changed my mind on that as yours is one of the best I have seen. Thank you.
Sebastien Lajoie Nice dude. No, but once my batch of W&N paints run out, I may consider ordering some. However, I sometimes work in layers and if I'm correct Geneva paints are specifically for a wet in wet style. Happy painting!
Bravo Mark! I am becoming inspired to convert a spare bedroom into a studio. It's been a long time coming. I appreciate your painting wisdom and your willingness to share this with the world without wanting to make big bucks for doing it. I also appreciate your curiosity and willingness to learn even though you are at the top of your game. You are a gift to the world. Amazing work with this horse, brilliant, and magical.
Haste makes waste. Also some edits I'm sure. But notice no corrections or do overs! The "Wham,.. bam; Thank you ma'am!!" approach often does not work for realist painters like Mark. He is deliberate in all his work on any subject matter.
Mark, amazing painting of the horse.! I watched your video before I looked at anybody else’s because I love your paintings. I have to paint a horse this week and the first person I went to was you! Really excellent video.
I paint horses and this is the best tutorial for that I have ever watched. wonderful artist and oh my, those paints look dreamy! might have to try them! I've begun a limited palette and it will free you, as an artist. great job!
Thank you, Mark, for sharing the progress of your commission work. It’s nice to know the this beautiful painting is now occupying the pride of place in the owner’ house.
Thank you for showing the reference photo, which many RUclips artists do not do. Helps us relate what you're doing to what you're painting from. Also appreciate your clear step-by-step instructions. Very well done and beautiful work!
Yep...over blending is my forte, I get so lost in my edges before I know it, it's all murky. You feather the tones into one another with 1-3 strokes at the most, whereas I tend to keep picking at it. This, along with your other demos, really helps me understand exactly what I'm doing wrong....As always Mr Carder, you are the master!!!....A trillion thanks👍👍☝
Stunning, just beautiful thank you for sharing, oh I wish I had your talent! PS love your instructions and showing the canvas and pallet close up showing and telling us what you are doing, great learning video.
Thanks Mark your painting is a revelation to me. Always worried about too much tuition would destroy my creative individuality especially in heading for realism. I was frightened to go to oil painting and become to be too bogged down by technique etc but you’ve blown that fear clean out of the water.....as I say it’s a revelation and by sharing this you are doing an amazing thing!...Understand now why Whistler used such very long brushes.
Gorgeous. You rock! It's a dark subject, but your use of light and dark is phenomenal. I love the richness of the colors, even on the pallet. They look Yummy. lol...
so glad I happened upon your web site......it is awesome. Just watched you paint the horse head with the dark background.......amazing.....what a joy to watch that horse come to life. I am a very amateur painter with no real training at all, just a wish to try to paint some of my critters, mostly horses and dogs.... with a very limited budget and some health issues I am so thrilled to be able to get some help online. thank you so much for sharing..........J.R (judy) Colorado
I found you a couple of days ago and I've learned a great deal already. I had no idea how important the color mixing and values were until now. Thankyou. Maybe I will be able to paint like you one day...or maybe not !
Thanks this was a gorgeous painting. My favorite model!, a horse. You really make it look effortless. I'm amazed at how you got his color so perfect. Again a big Thank You for sharing your knowledge & talents.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing. Got your name from Matt Philleo. I'm an acrylic painter but this was still very helpful. I focus mostly on animals and horses are one of my favorites. Congrats on your works of art!
By far the best technique to learn for an artist. It is precise and very powerful. I am a perfectionist and it is very difficult for me to finish a painting because I am afraid to do a mistake. What would you suggest Mark in this case.
You done this really fast . Makes me want to start painting cos the one thing that makes me nervous about art is that I might get bored of something I'm working on and just forget about it .
HI HORSE HEAD ,,, THANKS I LEARNT SOMETHING FROM YOUR TUTORIAL TODAY , ON HOW TO DO BLENDING EXCELLENT STUFF . I HAVE WATCH YOU BEFORE TOO BUT TOOK NO NOTICE . THANK YOU.
Hi, I see this is a year old but hoping you might still reply, I've never used oils before and I'm wondering if you could please tell me what you use to sketch out before you paint? Is it chalk, pastel, white pencil? I'm not sure what medium might affect the oils.
It’s rare to find a painting that is better (or more beautiful ) than a picture , this is one example of it

+Allan Turk You can buy the lesson on drawmixpaint.com He has one video on how to do a portrait and it is very good.
Sebastien Lajoie Thanks, I was aware of the portrait video. Wish I had the 100$ to spare, instead i bought the Geneva brush dip to support Mark.
+Allan Turk Good stuff. Very nice of you. I bought the video of the Landscape because that's what I was doing. Did you bought the paint???
Sebastien Lajoie Nice dude. No, but once my batch of W&N paints run out, I may consider ordering some. However, I sometimes work in layers and if I'm correct Geneva paints are specifically for a wet in wet style. Happy painting!

WOW- you painted so slowly & carefully but achieved the whole head in a short time. Thank you!!!

How do you prepare your canvas to wet in wet? Its pure oil or oilpaint? Can you show how to make nice wet canvas ready to paint?
Looks great, do you have any suggestions to give a painting like this a more smooth look?
