How to Fabricate REAR Tube Steel Fender Flares / Jeep XJ

  • I recently bought some Quarter Panel Armor for the Jeep XJ with the intention of fabricating some tube steel fenders onto them to match the front fenders I made in a previous video.
    In this video I take you through the process of making the tube steel fenders from start to finish. Do note that I am not a fabrication specialist nor a professional, just a DIY enthusiast with a basic workshop and tools who enjoys making things.

    35x12.50r15 BFG KM3's with 15x8 3.75" backspacing (-19 offset).
    Lift Front - RC 4.5" Coils and N2 Shocks (2" Coil Spacer).
    Front Shock Bar Pin Eliminator.
    Dana 30 High Pinion with Artec Industries Lower Control Arm Mounts with modified upper mount and modified Track Bar mount.
    Front RC Control Arm Drop Bracket.
    Ruff Stuff Short Arm Single Himes.
    RC Extended Sway Bar Links.
    Dana 30 Rock Crusher Diff Cover.
    Ruff Stuff One Ton OTK Steering.
    6" Lift Drop Pitman Arm.

    I have the same bender that you have. My son came across an air over hydraulic jack that will replace the manual bottle jack. Hopefully it works. It’ll be sweet not having to pump the jack while trying to keep an eye on the work. You’ve done a hell of a job on this project!

      That sounds like a much better upgrade. Its not a bad bender but it's the most basic I guess isn't it. I've found it okay for small thinner tube. Larger tube I've had no luck with even with sand and heat. Thanks for watching

    Turned out absolutely amazing. Love your XJ. One of my favorite parts is the reinforcement of the back bumper and how you incorporated the bottom quarter panel protection. ❤️🐞

    I've been wanting to do this to my 95 XJ (the flares) would be nice if they offered these in aluminum. I'm pricing out the materials to do mine in aluminum. But I'm not cutting the quarter panels of front fenders. I'll be making mine to bolt in the factory holes, using the nutserts. I'm enjoying following the evolution of your XJ. Keep up the good work.     Your channel is awesome I bought some amour for my xj just this past summer and I have yet to find a video that goes in any detail on the best way to seal the plate for stopping any rust thanks for the videos.I sealed mine just around the plates along with the gas opening also I have yet to have it out in the rain do to this so i will be undoing each one and putting a bit a Rtv in between as i did the same for the bends in the side of the amour for the body lines of the jeep, I think from your video , that should do it because I have it seal up rather good and have did a great job of keeping it dry as it stays under a car cover.

      Thanks for the comment and for watching! Sounds like you are making the right move. I think the biggest problem will be the armor trapping water around the bolt holes. The rtv should stop that. I haven't mounted mine yet as I have to fox the door hinge but I will seal it off hopefully. Thanks again

    Had same issue with mine. The flare frame bending due to the heat.
    I just cut a few relief notches on the under side. Then bent and held the flair into position then welded the relief cuts.

    When bending your pipe pack inside the pipe with sand you may have to cap the ends but you get the flat spots in the bends.

    New to the channel. I am a XJ owner here in the states, & I would love to go do some wheeling in Sweden, & use my XJ to fish, hunt, work on my bushcraft skills out of. There sure make a nice mobile base camp. Curious to see what a expat Brit thinks of them, & how your background shapes your usage.

      Thanks for watching. I picked them up off of ebay for around 100 pounds. I can find the link for you. They seem to work well and they run fine in low temps -35c with no flickering of frosted over.

      Sadly I never filmed the process as it was before I lived here. I guess I can pull on out and show it but its basically held in exactly the same way as the glass window. The rubber seal is holding it in.

    do you need to run mud flaps where you live? Ive always thought that that style metal fender would lend itself to some quick attach/detach mud flaps

      I tend to run the front and back with some diy inner wheel liners. The gravel roads are pretty unforgiving so I have to protect everything.

    Hey, is it good to have your leaf springs flat or should they have more of a bow to them?

      I have shackle relocation brackets so it can tend to give the impression that the leaf is flatter when it just pushes the curve up in the other side.

      I don't know how to make them for a G Class. This video is all the information I have on building them. I guess you can watch it and just try to build and fit them as you go.

    Been watching your channel for a while. I’m originally from England. Moved to Alberta Canada 9yrs ago. Moved out here for the mountains and going out into the wilderness doing bushcraft shelters etc. (Inspired by Ray Mears and decided I needed to live in Canada)

      Sounds like a similar story to me. Originally from England and moved to Sweden for the nature and freedom. I do miss doing the bushcraft courses but hopefully in time I can run them here. If and when corona allows.
