The little kid is not committing suicide, he has made a boxcar with wings which will take him from one island, where he is stranded, to another island, where his mother is waiting in their home for him to return. Umbrella Beach is a surreal view of the story of The Prodigal Son. The song is all about how the boy ran away from home, then realized what he had done, and at that, went to great lengths to undo the pain he had caused his mother and thus decided to return back to his home. 'Home will always be here, unseen, out of sight'. These are his resonating thoughts, memoirs, of home, while he is away and on the run. Tom
I don't know, I know this comment's been recycled for a few years now, but now that I'm looking at it, it looks as if they're all on the same island; the island in the distance looks the same. So maybe the scenes of the boy were the past and his assumed parents look for him everyday in the future
Green Poo I sorta feel that while there might be a conontation of the kid suiciding, i feel that its more towards the kid achieved his dreams and left the little island, and his mom is waiting for him to come home and his dad is up on the roof to see if theres anyone coming from the mainland
And then they both die, the lady and the son, the father is in heaven, looking to see if his wife and son are okay, the son runs away because he can't deal with the pain of losing his dad, and the mom builds a boxcar to look for her son, the son builds a boxcar to look for his mom, they die, and join the dad in heaven
Few lost boys..One lost mom..Home out of reach, understand..Umbrella I'll hold keep you dry. protected, I have always walked in rain hoping to heal every pain endured but my own. That's truth..Love...
everytime i listen to his music it hurts because i know im getting older and still coming back to his music and just reminds me of being a teenager listening to this and man i wish i could go back.
Kshitij Pandit you know many people have said that to describe owl city’s music, and I can’t say I’m different 😃 it really is surreal and other worldly, makes me think I’m still a little kid playing around
Guys, this video is not about dying. It's about the exact opposite - living!! Don't you get it? Adam made the lyrics, which are quite vivid and imaginative, why wouldn't the video be, like when the kid flies, he really pursues his own dreams. Seeing you guys caring about whether the boy dies or is okey ruins it all. This is an uplifting video :D
The line "underwater ferris wheel" makes me actually picture a ferris wheel that's underwater with an underwater theme park all around it. And the "home is a boxcar" line reminds me of the Boxcar Children book series XD
"Umbrella Beach" Stems and gears, oh how the daisies bloom When chandeliers light up the engine room Can you feel the drops as it starts to rain There's an underwater Ferris wheel Where I found the missing link to this island chain Home will always be here, unseen, outta sight Where I disappear and hide I think dreamy things as I'm waving goodbye So I'll spread out my wings and fly Home is a boxcar and it's so far out of reach Hidden under umbrella beach Home will always be here, unseen, outta sight Where I disappear and hide I think dreamy things as I'm waving goodbye So I'll spread out my wings and fly I'll spread my wings and fly Home is a boxcar and it's so far out of reach Hidden under umbrella beach
Holy shit... I can't believe it's been 6 years. I bought this album about 5 years ago and so much has happened in that time. It feels so nostalgic and weird now, listening awkwardly to the music I used to listen to everyday for hours on end. Sorta makes me miss back when life was simpler.
The kid is chasing his dreams. The mom simply ponders at the distant city, meanwhile the dad cowardly observes it through his binoculars. Ahh this video unsettled me. I wish I could've understood this concept as a 15 year old. back when the video came out.
you remind me of holden caulfield, I despise english and literature personally and am mainly exclusively interested in mathematics and science although you seem to value youth, and the many numerous beneficial qualities and attributes in which it is associated with and I certainly agree with that perspective. It resonated quite significantly with me, and was the only theme other than time stoping and everything remaining the same that remained with me after reading the book. Unless you have a career directly related to scientific, mathematics and engineering and are an adult the youth of the newest generation are the most intelligent, least ignorant RELATIVELY although that can be argued, eager, and willing to learn, and be productive for the fun, satisfaction and euphoria involved when compared with adults. Adults focus only on personal gain and gain for others, monetarily and morally after a while, gradually which seems to be a monotonous, and increases their ignorance, obstructing their view of a larger reality, which in turn, causes delusion when becoming very elderly and prevents creative intellectual thinking. Oh society I hate you, and social rights that you create and foster the existence of, held exclusively by adults, other than substance use laws and driving- from anonymous
Owl City creates music that brings you out of this world. He uses the natural world for his themes. He does not need half-naked twerking ladies, kissing scenes, money showing, and showboating to make his music become so loved all the world over.
Umbrella Beach by Owl City Songfacts®: This is the first single released in the UK by Owl City, an Electronica/Pop project of Minnesota native Adam Young. A self-described "shy-kid," this song reflects Young's desire to escape in dreams and hide away from life's pressures. Young explained to Female First: "'Umbrella Beach' is about a hermit living in a box car on the edge of the shoreline that corroded so badly, it wound up at the bottom of the bay. Rather than finding a new home, the hermit chooses to learn to scuba dive and now spends his days deep under the waves in his boxcar."
+Chuto yep i was 9 first time i heard it😎 but then forgot the song😢 and the artist till i heard it again on the radio and wrote down the as soon as i found out his name. my fav song from owl city is fireflies 🔥🐝
Can't believe it... Listened to this song like 3 or 4 years ago for the first time, and yet STILL people are coming here everyday and hearing this for the first time. Another thing, the last time I listen to this song was way long ago, but I still know almost all of the lyrics! Hehe...
Still my all time favourite Owl City song - very dreamy, I remember listening when I was younger. Dreaming of the ocean and this song(and many others) became my own place ‘to disappear and hide’
The kid is Dead and his parents are still waiting for him . The Song is about a beach ( Umbrella Beach ) where people go after they die and the boy wants to get back to his parents :)
Adam/owlcity, you created poetic and strong music so strong that it has alot of nostalgic emotions. I'm glad God has given yoi this talent and I was able to here you sing. Keep on singing YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH YOUR MUSIC😊❤❤❤❤
I always forget Umbrella Beach also got an official music video alongside Fireflies and Vanilla Twilight. This is one of my favourite songs-especially Long Lost Sun's remix.
Heh... I would sit on my roof it is just that people have trust issues with that, and I got kicked off my roof when I started throwing basketballs at people.

All them kids....dead. Missing kids. The intro tells you that right away.... daisies bloom. Then the chorus "Home will always be here unseen, out of sight Where I disappear and hide I think dreamy things as I'm waving goodbye So I'll spread out my wings and fly" look at Mom's reality... notice anything?
The entire video is an allegorical adaptation of archetypal themes, and clearly does not take place in our reality. Why would a mother be separated from her son like that, only solvable through a flying mechanism? There are a few other oddities as well. In the world Owl City videos take place, I could see the contraption taking flight or, if it didn't, floating or letting the kid jump out before it hit the ocean pushing him to try again.
Stands and gears, oh how the daisies bloom When chandeliers light up the engine room Can you feel the drops as it starts to rain There's an underwater Ferris wheel where I found the missing link to this island chain Home will always be here unseen, out of sight Where I disappear and hide I think dreamy things as I'm waving goodbye So I'll spread out my wings and fly Home is a boxcar and it's so far out of reach Hidden under umbrella beach Home will always be here, unseen, out of sight Where I disappear and hide I think dreamy things as I'm waving goodbye So I'll spread out my wings and fly I'll spread my wings and fly Home is a boxcar and it's so far out of reach Hidden under umbrella beach
This video is completely metaphorical of Adam Young’s musical career. The kid is meant to be Adam Young. The boxcar he builds is Owl City. Just like Owl City launched Adam out from where he was and took him to places he could have never imagined, the boxcar does the same for this boy.
I'm a die-hard "Satanic/horror" black metal fan.... But Owl City's older music holds a special place in my heart. I could never hold anger towards Adam Young's wonderfully vibrant and aesthetically pleasing structure
If you have good hand positioning, typing without looking at the keyboard is easy. Left pinky on A, LR on S, LM on D, LI on F, both thumbs on spacebar, RI on J, RM on K, RR on L and RP on semicolon. Move a single finger out of home row at a time to reach the other letters (left index down for V, right middle up for I, etc) Home row position makes typing way quicker and you don't have to look at your keyboard to use it. F and J have slight bumps on them on most keyboards, so you can easily find home row position by placing your index fingers on those two bumps.
My interpretation of the video is that really and truly the flight was successful. Everyone in the video looks younger than they are really supposed to be. The boy building the flying machine is really an engineer, who plans to prove everyone wrong that his dreams can come true. All this time, the lady in the video is reminiscing about the boy, by looking at pictures or thinking about him building his machine. Notice they are never in the same scene together. When the flying machine is completed the last of his engineer friends who haven't given up on him come to help him and see him off. The flight is successful, you can tell by the proud faces of the boys. but the pilot never comes back. only two believers are left in the whole lot, his mother and one grown up friend, who is seen looking out on the top of his roof for the return his friend. A lot of time has passed since the engineer left. Coming down to the ending of the scene this grown friend catches a glimpse of something, maybe it's his friend, so he take a better look with a binoculars. Maybe I'm right maybe I'm wrong- Listen to the lyrics in detail.
I became a fan of Owl City in 2013 and stopped listening in mid 2014. Looking back, I find some of the songs I used to love a bit cringey and cliche, but this is one that has stood the test of time for me. It wasn't until now that I realised the meaning of this song and it is the most relatable thing I have heard in a while. I spend a lot of time in my basement alone playing around on the piano whether it be composing or arranging. Sometimes I even record. I don't usually talk about it because I still want to seem somewhat normal and not like a super genius who spends his free time experimenting with music theory. I think that a lot of us have that place where we go to unleash our creativity with no one around to judge us. That may not be the exact meaning of the song, but it was what I got out of it and that should be all that matters.
The kid is definitely not dead. This whole video is like metaphore, so you can't translate it with logic. I'm sure; judging by his friends' grin in the end, he flew and he did survive.
Alive, surviving yes, living no. I endured it all, Mother broken when learned truth. Mother Earth orphan ran away, looking for home, pieces of me being angry at the world soon as I can get in and out of the world soon as I can get in sooner on cancellation of what they all have to do with the pain suffering abuse trauma and I get the note that this way my door is a blessing in disguise for u too long ago that song is a blessing in my heart for everyone soul endured terror torture of what they all have to do with it..

Stands and gears, oh how the daisies bloom
When chandeliers light up the engine room
Can you feel the drops as it starts to rain
There's an underwater Ferris wheel where
I found the missing link to this island chain
Home will always be here unseen, out of sight
Where I disappear and hide
I think dreamy things as I'm waving goodbye
So I'll spread out my wings and fly
Home is a boxcar and it's so far out of reach
Hidden under umbrella beach
Home will always be here, unseen, out of sight
Where I disappear and hide
I think dreamy things as I'm waving goodbye
So I'll spread out my wings and fly
I'll spread my wings and fly
Home is a boxcar and it's so far out of reach
Hidden under umbrella beach

I actually love this music video. The atmosphere it brings is perfect for the song
This reminds me of living in New Zealand, probably the best time of my life
creepypaste I live in NZ it's great :)
The scenery from the video reminds me of Auckland
I love the wonderment in his eyes when look at what he found. Reminders of days long lost.
I wander if the kid actually flew. Ocean Eyes is one of Owl City's greatest albums.
I have just become addicted to Owl CIty and I regret nothing. NOTHING. Also I typed this without looking at the keyboard :)
If you have good hand positioning, typing without looking at the keyboard is easy. Left pinky on A, LR on S, LM on D, LI on F, both thumbs on spacebar, RI on J, RM on K, RR on L and RP on semicolon. Move a single finger out of home row at a time to reach the other letters (left index down for V, right middle up for I, etc)
Home row position makes typing way quicker and you don't have to look at your keyboard to use it. F and J have slight bumps on them on most keyboards, so you can easily find home row position by placing your index fingers on those two bumps.
5 years later this comment still holds solid as fuck lol

This song is so awesome! The video tells it perfectly! Great job Owl City!
What’s the name of the city off in the distance between the ocean and village. or is just CGI? I know the location was shot in hope cove , England.
🥰💗
adam young is my current aesthetic 💓💓
Or anesthetic...in my case.
I can't seem to get this song out of my mind
2010

2019 -_- !
umm...i hope that kid is fine...
