Wait wait…hold up! People hated this version? This was a very comic accurate version of Lex I’ve seen. Genius, megalomaniac, sophisticated, compromising even, Superman obsessed to kill him, arrogant and proud. Even a delight to hear speak and also resourceful as shown in the prison scene, despite being stripped of Lex Corp he has means to get accommodations and even deals made.
It’s hated because John Cryer is not an intimidating person, or man. At all. Lex Luthor is someone you look at and fear, not because he’s jacked up like a wrestler or anything but because he has more of a macho presence to him than John Cryer can portray. Nothing against him as an actor, he did his best rendition of Lex. But again, there’s nothing scary, intense or intimidating about him. Lex is all of those things. Personally, aside from Gene Hackman in the OG Christopher Reeves films. I’d have to give it to Michael Rosenbaum in Smallville for playing one of the most evil, intimidating and brutal Luther’s to be shown on screen. Again, I’ve liked everything else I’ve seen John Cryer in, he’s a great actor. Even as Lenny Luthor in Superman IV, he was hilarious in that. But as the man himself, Lex. Not so much.
These are my favourite Lex Luthor's Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor in Superman (1978 - 1987) Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor in Superman Returns Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor in Batman vs Superman Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor on Supergirl (season 4 - 6)
@@kiwiangeldust6912 For Christ sake! All Cryer is doing is channeling Alan Harper's dark side in Two and a half men, That Darn Priest episode. It's no wonder the guy couldn't get much work after Two and a half men. I love the fact that they quickly dropped him to play in Superman and Lois.
I don't care how many Supergirl fans hate this version, John Cryer OWNED this role! Seriously why...why do people hate him as Lex? This is an INSANELY accurate depiction, I really don't get it.
@yoshimickster - Many people like him, actually (this would be more of a BvS situation... Where the audience is split 50/50 in their opinions). I guess it is because, like with Tyler Hoechlin´s Superman, this version of Lex is meant to be a mixture of ALL the previous versions of the character. This is not old school "silly" Lex Luthor (like Gene Hackman´s, Kevin Spacey´s or Jessie Eisenberg´s version of Lex), but it´s not "serious" Lex Luthor either (like John Shea´s, Michael Rossembaum´s or Clancy Brown´s versions of Luthor). This is a complete mixture of the two, so SOME people who only like one version, who will only accept "serious" Lex or "silly" Lex, both can find a reason to dislike this portrayal of the character (when both could also find MANY reasons to LOVE John Cryer´s Luthor... But they CHOOSE to ignore that, because being a hater is fun, apparently). But, as Ive said, I can name A LOT of reactors and reviewers who LOVE Cryer´s portrayal.
Jon Cryer was so fantastic as Lex Luthor! I wish we could have seen more with him and Tyler Hoechlin as Superman, but he did give a brilliant, diabolical and mean version of the villain.
Bro how is this not people’s favorite literally no other live action portrayal has even come close to being as accurate as Jon Cryer. Him betraying red daughter supergirl has to be one of my top ten favorite comic book live action moments of all time!
he’s actually real good, a lot better then i thought. i didnt watch supergirl at this point cause i didn’t like the writing, in fact at this point i stopped watching the arrowverse shows. but michael rosembaum still my favourite, but it’s all personal preference.
Michael Rosenbaum was much more accurate. Michael Cudlitz also is just now seen as Tyler Hoechlin's Luthor instead, especially after how kino he was in Season 4.
I just read about Jon Cryor being lex Luther in this and I hadn't even heard of it before. I immediately needed to see it. Holy crap he owned this. Man I might have to watch supergirl now

i understand peoples affection for the Smallville Lex but I honestly thoufht this version was pretty close to perfection. Reminded me of the Lex from the Superman animated series
Honestly Jon Cryer has solidified his place in history as the 2nd greatest lex after smallville lex luthor. Smart, sophisticated, charming and very elegant and even more evil
So I like this show. It's light but it's fun. His performance is too good for this show. This is easily my favorite live version of this character. I do not get the hate at all. He is an absolute highlight.

Man if Superman and Lois gets cancelled we’ll never see this Lex thrive on Superman and Lois. I know different earth and all, but they got an alternate version of Diggle so why not have Jon Cryer as Lex on S&L. He would be so good on Superman and Lois.
I was so surprised by this performance--John Cryer has acting chops I never suspected he had. I guess just seeing him on Two and A Half Men didn't really do him justice. Sure as Hell better than Jesse Eisenberg.

I think he's the best Luthor so far. Which is surprising when you look at the rest of the show, especially the writing. Even in this clip, notice how "struggeling" Lena just cooperates and sits down willing at 2:44, even though the henchman just grabbed one of her hands? Nothing prevents her from standing up, she even has a free hand.
The thing is he is actually great as Lex Luthor, he captures the character very well in a lot of areas. But the problem is I personally can't take him seriously because all I see is Alan Harper from Two and a Half Men 😅 I want to see it differently, believe me I tried, but I really can't do it haha 🙈 But that's a me problem, not Jon Cryer's fault.
Jon Cryer's Lex Luthor ran circles around Jesse Eisenberg's. Keeping it simple and evil. The whole eccentricity-driven nonsense in the movie reduced the character to an annoyed rich kid.
Haven't watched this series but this Lex Luthor is very much perfect for a more campy DC Universe. He actually does kind of remind me a bit of Gene Hackmans portrayal in just how larger than life he is.
He may not be everyone's favorite version of Lex Luthor but, damn, if Jon Cryer didn't make the most of the role he was given.
Didnt realize that was Alan from Two and a Half Men. Yes I do like how he plays this role.
Definitely my favorite.
