    This is why Smallville's version of Lex is always going to be the best. We got a decade of seeing these characters evolve together and Lex, in his own strange way, still sees Clark as a friend. I've always enjoyed the Superman stories where Clark and Lex are portrayed as having been childhood friends. It makes their story all the more poignant because, deep down, Lex is still trying to push Clark to be the best he can be and Clark is still trying to save his friend. No two actors portrayed that dynamic better than Michael and Tom. They were, hands down, the best Superman/Lex Luthor pairing in history.

      I loved this ending. Probably the best they could've done for the Clark and Lex characters. Both knowing they were going on to become enemies yet there's this mutual respect there, a certain understanding that nobody but them will ever relate to. And it offered a tiny crack in the door for redemption for Lex if he ever went that route. I thought it was very cleverly done.

      @Artisan1979 8 лет назад +49

      John Laurence Chan I agree. Clark did his best to save Lex from himself and the evil Lionel seemed to infect his children with. Lex once said that their friendship kept his evil at bay; he saw Clark as the person he wanted to aspire to be. But his baser instincts and his need for power and control and an obsessive destructive need to uncover and exploit Clark's secrets, rather than respect his right to privacy, completely obliterated that trust they shared. Clark was right when he also said Lex had a chance to move away from the past betrayals and feuds, but he flatly turned it down in favor of his grand delusions.

    Michael Rosenbaum and the writers behind this Lex UNDERSTOOD Lex Luthor. Sure it started out as hatred and jealousy but then it became not about destroying Superman but improving him so in turn he would challenge Lex and force Lex to improve. Clark so vehemently denied his destiny as Superman and it's Lex who forced him to become the greatest hero, and in turn it forces Lex to try and become more powerful to outdo and then vice versa.

That small part of him laments the way his relationship with Clark from now will be defined by hatred and being an enemy. A psychologist would have a field day with this guy. Lex desperately wants a relationship with Clark, any kind of relationship even if that means he has to be Superman's arch enemy.

    "I'm sorry I couldn't save you Lex." After 10 years of Clark confronting Lex, Lex having a monologue and Clark staring dumbfounded with no comeback, Clark finally gets the last word and it's perfect. It sums up what Superman is all about. Superman knows that Lex Luthor could save the world in more ways than Superman himself could ever dream of. Luthor wants a world without Superman but what he never understood is that Superman wants the same thing with one slight tweak - Superman wants a world that doesn't NEED Superman and he knows that Lex, if he could get past his own ego, could create such a world.

      “What killed me is you didn’t even want it. You fought it… you hid from it! I would have taken it and relished it and embraced it!”
      The truth is Lex ALWAYS wanted Clark’s powers. Lex already had the super genius brains & intellect, but he knew that if he possessed Clark’s physical abilities, then he would truly be the greatest man alive. Lex’s innocence and potential to do good in the world was beaten out of him by his psychotic father. And in this scene, there’s no more “friendship” between Clark & Lex. It’s now the first conversation between superhero and supervillain. Lex even acknowledges it, saying that they have a destiny on opposite sides of each other.
      Clark’s last words of “I’m sorry I couldn’t save you Lex” is an appropriate closing of the Smallville book. Clark admits defeat after years of trying to help Lex.

      Rich Tannis yeah but that villain mentality took years to make how were you going to do that in a 3 hour long movie. Plus I love the show but this lex was just cunning but not a genius, in the comics lex has never needed help from anybody be it mechanics, biology or any other field of knowledge. Plus one major thing about lex is that he figured out that Clark and Superman were one in the same just refused to believe it on the fact that he could not comprehend how someone that powerful would just want to be seen as a mild mannered person. Oddly enough the lex you got in Dawn of Justice was inspired by a story in which clark and lex became friends in highschool and the lex people wanted to see was a lex that met Superman when he was already an adult.

    I love that Lex is has finally accepted who he is but there's still this dynamic of friendship between them. Maybe not friendship but brotherhood. Lex is clear about his intentions but he also has this faith in Clark. He's very brotherly in this scene.

  • @LuthorRequiem

    I was definitely VERY frustrated at first. But upon rewatching "Finale", I realized that Lex's memories are probably still there, just buried in his subconscious. There are clues that suggest this, and the "Smallville: Season 11" comic that is out right now confirmed my theory recently. Lex said that he hates Superman but is not entirely sure where the hatred comes from. "Maybe I knew him before the mind wipe." So that means his arc on the show was not erased. Just repressed.

    • @ooshgasm
      @ooshgasm 9 лет назад +43

      shanemerrigan1994 The relationship between Luthor and Superman is one of the most interesting in comics. Crucial to understanding it is that Luthor is the best of humanity and would be our natural leader were it not for Superman. As our natural leader he would do an enormous amount of good and be willing to make necessary sacrifices to achieve greater ends. And then a God (Superman) comes from outer space and makes a mockery of every sacrifice that Luthor has to make. Because Superman does not need to make the sacrifices that humans must because of his god-like power. He can afford to have a naive childlike view of Good and Evil due to his powers. He makes a mockery of humanity's achievements and sacrifices merely by his existence. And that's where Luthor's rage (at least in part) stems from. From being sanctimoniously talked down to about right and wrong by a God who never has to choose. Great show

I'd watch every new episode just to see what he had in store lol Michael actually made he a bigger fan of Luthor by his role he was fucking great!!! still the best so far by far I'd say

      This may be true. Perhaps he could have played a serious Lex. Regardless, to me, both actors seem too young for the role of Lex Luthor, though perhaps the Smallville actor may have aged sufficiently to have done justice to the role in BvS.

    When Clark tells Lex he's sorry he couldn't save him, he was also apologizing to Alexander, Lex's conciousness in the form of his childhood self. Clark made a promise to Alexander when he was inside Lex's mind in season 7 that they would never stop being friends as long as Alexander never stopped fighting to bring Lex back to the side of good. Clark felt bad because he couldn't keep his promise to Alexander anymore. Lex was too far gone now, there was nothing else Clark could do for him anymore. At this point, Alexander was dead

    I think Rosenbaum and John Schneider were the best actors of the series, and ofc Lionel's actor as well. Best seasons are the first 5

    • @wtcvidman
      @wtcvidman 6 лет назад +8

      I say the first 3. The first 3 seasons had a brilliance that was lost afterwards--there's just something in the quality of the show that just never returned. I think season 4 lost that magic because of a premature introduction of Lois. They could've introduced her and kept that brilliance, but the problem is she appeared way too many times for a character they had no role for and who had nothing to do as a character and one who they were not ready to start developing other than pairing her with Clark. That's why that season was full of fillers. Sure we had gems like Transference & Onyx (notice how Lois wasn't in them), but the rest of the season was pretty lame. The witch plot was also really stupid and was only done to include Lana in the stones plot, which should have been the focus of that season. In the end, the stones plot was ruined because of too many fillers and because of Lana's inclusion in it.
      If you watch the first 3 seasons you'll see a very subtle progression of Lionel & Lex regarding kryptonite, meteor freaks and alien technology. I remember Lex was at his computer when he read one of Chloe's Torch articles on kryptonite and its effects. Then I think it was in Craving when he learned about Dr. Hamilton and his experiments on moon rocks and hired him to study the meteors. Then there's Jitters where Lex learns about Lionel's Level 3 experiments. As the season goes on, we learn other things like Lex buying a particle accelerator that he's hiding from Lionel in Kinetic, Lex's old nanny Pamela dying and leaving him shares of his mother's stock, Lionel making an offer to move Lex back to Metropolis so he could keep a closer eye on him and Lex refusing to move. Lionel then sends Dominic to find out what Lex was up to and Lex still evades him. And then he pays off that reporter Carrie Castle to do a hitjob on Lex and he again weathers the storm and turns the tables. Finally with no options left, Lionel closes the plant down and Lex fights him, ultimately setting up an employee buyout and uses the shares Pamela Jenkins got from his mom & left him to buy the plant & turn it into Lexcorp. Lionel gets injured by the storm and uses his injury as an excuse to stay with Lex and find out what he's up to. It doesn't take long for him to be told by Dr. Hamilton about an alien ship and was even taken to his barn and felt it and the octagonal keyhole with his hands when he was blind in Dichotic. The very next episode, Red, Lionel is a blind witness to Clark shooting a gun that he said was fired by the rogue agent who was after Jessie's dad, but at the end of the episode Lionel is seen playing with the stray bullets that Clark fired into his own hand, knowing that there was something special about Clark because the bullets should not have been loose as they were if they were fired normally but instead lodged into a surface or person. That journey of how Lionel found out about Clark being special was a nice & subtle path that was brilliantly written and along the way other brilliant scenes happened as well stemming from Lex's hiring of Roger Nixon who found that crop duster Eddie Cole whose testimony of the day of the meteor shower led to Lex finding the octagonal key. Lionel & Lex kept learning more & more about the alien presence in Smallville as the Kawatche cave was discovered and as Clark learned more & more about himself as well. And the more Lionel learned, the more obsessed & dangerous he got.
      The pinnacle was in season 3 when he got his hands on the blood sample from Clark & Morgan Edge was introduced. The writing behind Lionel & Edge & their history, Lionel's murder of his parents, Lionel's liver disease, Lionel using Clark's blood & the cave to save himself, and all that stuff with Julian & Lex's memories of his childhood and his erased memories from when he learned Clark's secret are unmatched for the rest of the series in terms of the writing quality. The Shattered-Asylum plot was just spectacular. I also loved how proactive Clark was in those days and how Chloe did not know his secret and do what she did later on (when she became his brain as they made Clark incredibly stupid & unable to think for himself).

      Of all the live action portrayals, his is the best. Shea (Lois and Clark) and Cryer (Supergirl) were good too. Gene Hackman was iconic but ironically he can be too goofy at times, more like Eisenberg. He who shall not be named was probably the closest of the movie versions (maybe because he was a real life villain). I'd love to see a live action Clancy Brown (the voice of Lex in the DC animated universe).

      all character and story progression was purposfully held back to make it last 10 seasons before it disappoints you again with 1 final episode. Superman and Lois's Lex just got out of prison and got to work creating Doomsday and unleashed him on superman. and that is just the season 3 finally. the fight is gonna pick up where it left off on the moon when season 4 starts.
      Smallville's lex hardly did anything of significance in 10 seasons. Superman and Lois's Lex kicked Superman's ass in just 2 episodes. actually he let doomsday do the kicking, you know what i mean.
