His Grandma ( the one he shot before he went to the school) works at the school as a Teacher's Aide. He would have access to the security and design of the school simply by visiting her there.

Unfortunately many drills and training exercises are carried out and treated like team-off-work days. Show up, go through 1-2 scenarios on projector, tea break, a few theories, lunch one practical scenario sign attendance go home. Too much time and emphasis is put on following written policy and procedures to the letter, nothing/ not much on personal initiative and responsibility.
This happens a lot with schools in poor communities. We had a back door as well that was broken and took a while to fix. ACs that don’t work, issues with pests…meanwhile schools on the other side of town have restaurants on campus.
It’s not poor it’s just negligence and people don’t want to deal with all the legwork it takes. Sometimes things like that can take months to get resolved.
At my daughter’s school, the doors lock automatically whenever you shut them and can’t be opened without a key. Honestly, what’s wrong with the people who designed this school? The fact that some doors didn’t lock at all… the poor kids
my high school had magnetic locks that each student/faculty had to have an ID card to unlock it, if you weren't attending school (like its summer or you've graduated) the cards aren't activated
I bet they get their mandatory pronoun, trans, and other touchy-feely training. Get rid of the Teachers Union and allow teachers to practice thinking for themselves. Surely a good citizen in Uvalde would have made necessary repairs to the doors. The bureaucracy of work orders and restrictions on who can do the work assures nothing gets done. That's the point, he wasn't locked inside at all. According to video footage, the cops never even attempted to open the classroom doors by even turning the handle, they assumed they were locked. All that time wasted waiting for a master key for doors that can't even be locked from the inside to begin with. Smh 🙄
According to the way the locks worked shooter as well as children might of been prevented from "leaving" the 2 classrooms but nothing was stopping people from "entering" the classrooms. Seems the locks made the doors become 1 way entry points when locked but on the wrong side.
I taught for four years in a classroom which had a broken lock. I complained about it every year. Nothing was ever done. It was noted in all 16 lockdown drills I completed in that room. Parents: please speak up. Districts don't care when teachers complain.

The average teacher invests almost $2k per year into their classroom, we have absolutely no problem paying for things. 1) No locksmith will work on someone else's property without signed consent. 2) We aren't permitted to make any changes to the building unless we go through Admin, as I attempted for years. The kids aren't the only people who die, teachers do too. We are very aware of the risk we take by simply attempting to educate the next generation.

@@loublev5098 1) I don't teach in a unionized state. Many teachers work in states with little or no union representation. 2) Fire Marshall's see absolutely no problem with doors that don't lock. They don't consider shooting situations. A Fire Marshall is more likely to get after me for having window coverings. Typically school doors lock from the outside, so that a child cannot lock themselves in without a teacher. Doors are then kept locked at all times, with a magnet hold the door slightly adjacent. That is standard practice. Fire Marshalls like open doors. Many think that locked doors on exteriors are enough. 3) We've lost a lot of parent involvement since the pandemic. Many just got used to not coming in. I personally welcome parent involvement. Most of the CRT indoctrination and gender indoctrination lies might vanish, if parents could come in and see for themselves that we aren't teaching anything like that. Parents are welcome in my classroom at any time. I haven't had a parent take me up on that since 2019.
I worked in a school district for 11 years and I was one of the locksmiths. Doors can not be locked manually from the inside. However all the inside doors were locked from the outside with a key. We had a magnetic strip that would keep the door from latching if the teacher wanted to do that between class changing. If there was a lockdown all the teacher had to do was remove the magnetic strip and close the door locked. Then all the students and teacher were to move to a corner of the classroom were they could not be seen or heard. All of the windows next to the doors were always covered completely. The outside doors were ALWAYS locked and they were checked by the school security regularly during the day. If any door in the district was not working properly It was always priority one to go and fix it, even if the superintendent needed something fixed. All of these safeties were implemented years ago when all of these mass shootings started happening. Safety can be accomplished if people set their minds to it, it is not that hard or impossible. No need to get rid of the back doors like some dumb senator from Texas suggested.
@@cgmason7568 The school district I worked in had 11 schools plus the admin building. You do not have go out of the room to remove the strip. You open the door slightly and remove it and the door locks. It takes a few seconds to do this. This way the teacher does not have to go looking for a key and then go outside the door to lock it. The locks on all the doors were always locked, the magnet just prevents the latch to go into the latch hole. Not sure what you mean by auto locking doors, but if it is an electronic system that has to be installed it sounds costly. There are a lot of poor districts in the US and that might not be affordable. The magnetic strip is pretty cheap and fast.
@@everythingpony I believe that is for "dogging" the door latch. It does not unlock or lock the lock. What it does is hold the latch in so that it does not go into the latch hole. But what is the point you are trying to make?
I remember when I was in high school my teacher told us NOT to barricade the doors in the case of an active shooter (like what you’re supposed to do) because our doors opened outward into the hallway. Our doors were also made of very old wood and could easily be broken down. It’s shameful that this was normal for my school and still is in thousands of schools across the country
I think doors that go outwards are sometimes installed incase of a fire. There's incidents where ppl were trapped because they ended up blocking the door from opening by having a bunch of ppl pushing against a door that goes inward. One case is the NYC triangle shirtwaist fire
Does Uvalde have a fire marshal if so fire them as well. They are the ones requiring doors remain unlock when the building is occupied. This device on the door is so you can get out but you can’t get in. The Fire Marshal apparently was not checking the doors at the school. My high school got rebuilt like 4 years ago, and they made every classroom have huge windows to the hallways. The windows arent reinforced or anything, and they’re like 4 feet wide by 10 feet tall. There’s two windows per classroom. The worse place to be in case of a shooting would be the second floor since there’s no way of exiting the building unless you go out onto the hallway, run down the stairs and outside. You could also stay inside the classroom and wait till the windows get shot out and oh well rip. I find it so idiotic how a modern school was built so poorly in case of a shooting. Not only that but the school got a 1mil grant for building a statue and a community park, yet they don’t use that money for a little more security.
Never thought about it but my old elementary school has doors that are eerily similar and huge windows you could just easily shoot out or throw something through to get entry into the school. Schools really need to do a better job before it’s too late.
I think the schools in my town are like that too I'm going to drive around sometime and look cuz I haven't been to the school in years but from what I remember they look like this.. I hope that the other schools around are paying attention to this, and make changes so many people like to believe it's never going to happen in their hometown and they just don't know that it can happen anywhere at any school doesn't matter where you live..
My elementary school didn't have doors, just large openings in the wall. Some teachers would cover it with cabinets to try and make the entrances smaller. Some of the rooms also didn't have walls dividing them. The school was built before regulations on the student to teacher ratio were put in. I really hope that the classrooms have added doors and walls now. Unfortunately the school sits in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city so I don't imagine it will happen.
my elementary school has windows at the top of the walls of concrete and these windows are a bit slim but these windows go across one wall but all teachers are provided with curtains or shutters

Sad thing is, I would bet the majority of schools in this country have just as many basic security failures as Uvalde, if not more. Those locks were designed to keep kids from locking teachers out of the classroom, and easily escape a fire. Which had been a perfectly fine expectation of a lock until about 2010.

Injured victims and deceased victims’ families need to sue the Texas State Government, the Uvalde School District, and all of the police departments that didn’t go in to stop the shooter; including those cops that went in and only saved their own children or their friends’/co-workers children. This whole avoidable tragedy lays at the feet of all of those incompetent and grossly negligent responders by inaction and trying to cover up the lack of professionalism and not doing their jobs. It’s sickening! Money won’t bring dead children and teachers back, but those families and those recovering will need medical and psychological care. They should be able to move away from that town and out of the state if they choose. All of the agencies involved and especially leaders and cops that are part of the coverup will only learn by having a monetary judgement holding them accountable to pay. Let’s face it, money is all they care about. It’s a sad statement, but after everything coming out on this? Those families deserve justice.

Everytime I pictured this story In my head the walls were bleek and boring like my high-school. To see the colorful elementary wall just really makes me see we will never know exactly what the survivors went thru or what the experience was like. My school (in Germany!) has all classroom doors that lock when they are closed but can always be opened from the inside, never from the outside without a key. Simple design that should include any doors. Out schools are open campus so anybody can walk in but at least the classrooms would be secure.
I remember the day after the event when i was in 1st period we had a door that led outside and a security guard was testing if the doors were locked. It's sad how not all buildings have doors that could be locked from the inside, its shocking how designers waved this flaw out.

My school and classroom had these same doors with locks on the outside. It's a fire code issue. Students need to be able to exit from inside quickly. Also, you don't want children to be able to lock a teacher/adult out of the classroom. That's a safety issue. We teachers were trained and drilled to keep doors locked at all times. My guess is that it was the last week of school, parents coming and going for awards ceremonies, class party supplies being brought in, so the door was unlocked for convenience by someone. So tragic and that person will never forgive themselves.

Yes, you are entirely correct... It IS a fire code issue. The facts are contained in NFPA 101, and more specifically, in NFPA 80. Those codes have used science, fact, history, statistics and input from many areas of expertise to create them to keep people safe. With over more than 3000 school fires in a year here in the US you then tell me which is the greater danger to loss of life. Most people with intelligence will answer that fire 🔥🚒 is the greater danger due to greater occurrences.
This makes me thankful for my school’s extra security measures. I’m in a region where there isn’t many shootings but it’s still very important to invest in extra safety, especially at a time like this.

I have worked at 2 different school in diff states and when this happened I said the same! We have to lock doors from outside then get back in class and hide! I always thought this was dumb and the door knob was complicated. You have to turn its a certain way for it to lock, I made sure I practiced a few times. But under duress anyone could mess up!

No one mentions that the peep window in the door also makes it where the shooter can see which rooms have survivors hiding in it and which ones don't. If they didn't have hallway facing windows, they can just shelter in place and lock the door [well about that]. They won't know which rooms are occupied or vacant and will be wasting time trying to bust into vacant rooms giving the police more time to ste in before there are mass casualties. Especially if they had literally all doors locked and made it where without a room number list, you can't tell what is a class room, caffeteria, janitors closet, restroom, etc. Every door looks identical, has no hall facing windows, and is labeled only with a sequential room #... the creep would be spending most of his time trying to bust down doors to janitors closets, restrooms, etc.

Majority of the older buildings have classroom doors that can only be locked by physically inserting a key and locking it from the outside. By then it’s too late in a situation as this. Although, we are trained that our doors are to remain locked and closed at all times. With Covid and issues with ventilation it is just a loose, loose situation 😢. The elementary school by my house where I attended as a child is also very very easy to get in, doors never locked from the outside and the security guard desk is facing away from the door 🤦♂️ . It blows my mind how these schools haven’t learned from past incidents
It is a building code requirement that exit doors have panic hardware. Not sure about the vision pane and side lights, but they also seem to be quite common in schools also. The exit door was either never locked in the first place (which is possible to do depending on how the key is turned), or the latch failed to engage when the teacher removed the prop earlier.
That door can be locked from the inside. The exit door with the press-bar to exit is the exact same as those used in my school district, and in order to lock them you place an allen key into the hole on the right of the bar and twist it. All of the administrators in my district have allen keys on their keychains for this purpose.
To be fair. When a lot of these schools were built (many elementary schools in the US were built in the 1960's) this was the furthest thing from people's mind.
Yeah the doors in my district lock the same way. I never even thought about how much of a design flaw that is. I always just assumed the door should and would always be locked.
It’s not a design flaw, the Von Duprin 99 panic device shown here, a proven and reliable design from the 1970’s (still made brand new, today) was designed for fire escape, not Wild West insane land. Furthermore they can be set up to an undefeatable auto lock if speced appropriately ( fire rated 99, store room trim). They are more commonly sold with dogging mechanism and classroom trim however, as it’s far more flexible but less resistant to idiots leaving shit unlocked.

NO door should EVER lock from the outside other than prison cell doors. Think about the door to your house. where does it lock from? inside. your bedroom & bathroom doors? inside. there is a reason for that. when they lock from the inside, you both have a layer of threat protection & the ability to easily unlock the door (from the inside) in the event of a fire.
@@kalyn3483 You could put a thumb-turn cylinder in a key dog panic device, but then kids can just walk up and tamper with it. Panic hardware is not really designed to stop an attack in the way you describe. It's meant to secure a building when the business is closed, and it's meant to ensure escape during a fire. Locking from the inside is not a requirement for either one of these goals. This is the way panic hardware has been made for 60 years. Free, one motion egress (escape) is required at all times, you cannot be required to disengage any kind of thumb turn or latch from the inside, in the event of a burning building, full of smoke, people panic and rush for the doors, even the simplest obstacle to escape can, and has lead to mass death. There are many laymen making comments about things they don't understand. Door hardware is far more complex then you realize. Also, I think you are confused by the term "Lock from the outside" these doors are always free egress, you can always escape, lock from the outside means you can't freely enter. Your comparisons to residential hardware are completely irrelevant, commercial is a totally different application, with a different set of requirements, homes do not have to meet fire code, homes do not have 100+ people in them.
It's sickining, I'm from the UK and all my school doors run on key cards (I know this is very common in a lot of UK schools) I do not go to a private school, and go to a large state school in quite a rough area. The doors lock themselves and only teachers have access to the doors they need to open. For example, an English teacher has a key card that can only open doors in the English block. Why isn't this something that is introduced into the USA, it's not something that requires whole new doors. But instead something as simple as replacing the lock. I am obviously not blaming this shooting the fact that the doors have the wrong locks. As I think it's clear what the issue is and why so many shootings happen all across America and my heart goes out to all those families and everyone in America who are stuck in a nation that will not fix the gun law issues.
We had something like that at my middle school except that we used physical keys instead; the doors always locked themselves. American schools are often terribly underfunded (like other aspects of American society such as healthcare), especially in red states.

As a teacher in Texas who has worked in lower income schools- those types of doors that only lock on the outside and do not have an ID badge scanner to get in are very common. We also had many classroom doors that would not lock so we had to learn how to place a student chair a certain way on the door handle for lockdown drills. Teachers tried to address it every year but it always led back to "we don't have the funds." Now, I work in a district that has more funding however, I have never seen a classroom door that is able to lock from the inside.
Lack of police response killed the children. It had nothing to do with doors. The doors were unlocked. There is nothing wrong with the doors or the design of the doors. This is a police smoke screen cover-up.
There is most definitely an issue when teachers think they’re exterior doors lock (after seeing a gun man) but they don’t lock. That is complete b.s. Do you know how many doors regularly lock behind you automatically in public? The exterior door should have locked!! This is what you get when you get committees, politicians and boards to design systems. Looking at the images being shown, all the doors would have failed their first safety test. Exterior push bar door locks are supposed to automatically lock when doors are sprung shut. Interior/ classroom doors could have borrowed from the humble toilet door lock- They lock from the inside. If and when glass/ viewing portals are fitted to doors they should not compromise the lock/ function of the door. That said, it shouldn’t draw attention away from the incompetence and very serious failures of the school safety officer(s) and law enforcement response. It is their failings and inactions on the scene that led to the high casualty numbers in the school. The buck stops with them. Looking at the investigation hearings, it is apparent the department of safety is mixing up the issues, non issues and potential issues into one pot. The investigation should into the school shooting should start from the moment the first shots we’re fired into the school- What happened? Issues about playing video games, dead cats in a bag, gun trigger adapter, high capacity magazines gun laws etc are only clouding the investigation.
The police department should understand the schools in there area even maps and become fimilar with schools in Utah police department were training at local high school but sometimes when shooter shoots through door it can be unsafe to maybe touching the door would be hard to do if he's shooting through the door just a thought but did this class room have windows if so why didn't they shoot him down that way like a sniper. It’s not that simple. Put a barricade latch on an interior classroom? What happened when a student locks the teacher out and beats a kid to death while everyone watches though the window? There is a reason things are as they are. Panic devices are designed for fire escape, they can be set up to an auto lock, known as “store room function trim” but most opt to have the ability to unlock the door, this leaves staff responsible, not door hardware. I do agree with almost everything you said though, particularly with the smoke screen those responsible are throwing up, this door non-issue is just another one

A door or lock that cannot be opened or locked clearly doesn’t fulfil it’s basic function. I give the example of the toilet door lock for its simplicity yet high effectiveness. As for a kid locking a teacher out of a classroom to beat another kid to death, I don’t know how many such incidents are on record but surely that kind of kid would have no problem beating another child to death in an unlocked classroom, a bathroom or the playground and shouldn’t be in that kind of environment in the first place. I fully agree with you that the door hardware cannot be seen to be responsible for the victims but rather the people involved. The issue is or should be the determined active shooter on the school premises and what was not done/ could have been done to minimise casualties.
It's so sad to think that those are the kinds of thing schools in the US need to worry about. None of the classrooms in my schools growing up had any locks so that's something i'd never worry about when building a school. I hope things get better and this doesn't have to be a concern in the future

These are just classroom function locks and that's how they always have been, from back in the day before shooters were a thing. Modern classroom intruder function provides interior control of the locked or unlocked outside trim state. Storeroom function would also work but never allow an unlocked exterior. The exterior panic door in question just needs a nightlatch/storeroom function trim that remains locked after key entry and the door can only be held open by "dogging down" the pushbar from inside using a hex/Allen key. The glass is required by law to be a safety type, tempered or laminated with laminated being the better choice as tempered will blow up an go into a tiny pieces, but tempered is cheaper so that's likely what you get. Laminated will stay in place with much additional hacking required to clear the opening. I guarantee when new door hardware is approved the board will likely give the work to some outside vendor and beat the local locksmith who has probably been advocating for improvement all along out of the work. To my knowledge the government has never issued an SIC code for locksmiths to compete on these bids. Door hardware being considered "carpenter work", despite locksmithing being an ancient trade of more knowledgeable individuals. So when the carpenter's are done the story will now be that doors can just be credit carded open or levers tear off from them omitting the throughbolts intended to fasten them on well. Locksmiths are slighted by union and lobby interests and lack the backing to raise the capitol to be legitimately included in the build and renovations process. Locks seem to be carpenter work until the work gets tricky, such as full mortise installations and then the carpenter's come calling to sub us out for a door or two. That's just the American way, like it or not we are in a bad position to help schools out despite being the better choice.

There are two ways to lock and unlock a panic device, they actually work independently and will override each other. Dogging mechanism (aka the hole in the bar from inside) holds the bar down and leave door unlocked, outside trim (aka outside handle, grip, keyhole) will also unlock the door at any time, and depending what type of trim (store room or classroom) can leave the door unlocked all the time.
The school district and local police should have hardened the glass with security film (think of it as thick clear window tint). It can be added after initial construction. The door issues should have been addressed as well during training for a school shooter incident which allegedly happened about 9 weeks before this disaster. For a few thousand dollars, a school can be secured for a short period until courageous police arrive.

Would have made no difference in this case as the police would have still waited outside for far too long. The shooter's Grandma worked at this school. He had access to its security and design. This is pretty common, the lock function is literally called “classroom function”. This means the door can be locked or unlocked from the outside only with a key, and cannot be locked from the inside.

Doors at a business I worked at were exactly like this. When I asked why, I was told it was to locked up the place when leaving so that no one would come in after everyone left and steal. I would imagine this type of door is very common is areas that are suppose to be closed off to the public after business hours conclude.

It’s not a fire hazard,( the door still opens freely, from the inside, even if locked from the inside, you can always escape, you only control exterior locking) it’s more a practical issue. It’s kind of a big ask to expect a manufactor like allegion, Jackson, assy abbloy or Sargent to design and sell a unicorn bespoke lock just for schools, made in small batches, when the tried and true standard panic device is good for all other commercial applications. As tall an order as it is though, they are working on it. We’ve never “needed” it before. Times are a changing. You’d need to put keyed locks on both sides of the door, only controlling the exterior handle, always allowing free egress via the push bar, it can be done, but it’s a big ask. Fire code won’t permit supplemental locks, you can only have one lock, and it must open with a single motion with no special skills or knowledge. There’s good cause for this, as in the previous 100 years or so you were far more likely to die in a fire then a school shooting.

I don't understand why a door like this was ever designed at all. You would certainly never put a door like that on your house, why would you put it on a school. What is the logic behind it.
There have been some tragic school fires in the past (in which many children died), and I think this door design was with that in mind - that is, easier access for firefighters to get in, in order to evacuate children & teachers from a room, or possibly to contain a fire to just one room (which was hopefully empty to begin with). To give an example, the Our Lady of Angels fire in Chicago, in which 90+ children and several teachers died. There were other problems with the particular school building(s) involved, mainly that there was no convenient way of escaping the school, and that the building wasn’t up to code standards/was quite a bit older. Please don’t assume a design is poor before learning why it was made that way in the first place - true, it may be for a somewhat “outdated” reason (although fires happen quite often, generally speaking, the design might not be with the most recent tragic incidents in mind, because I’m sure it takes several years to develop and adequately test a new door design, even BEFORE adopting it as the standard in a school), but still it is designed that way for a very valid reason. Arguably, an emergency situation that is more likely to occur.
I would also like to add this link. According to these regulations and guidelines, the teacher of a classroom must open the door, lock from outside, shut the door with him- or herself inside, in order for the door not to open from the point of view of anyone in the hallway. IF teachers do not generally keep these doors locked from the outside at all times (meaning anyone leaving to use the bathroom or get something from a locker would have to be let in, and couldn’t get back into the classroom on his or her own) then it is absolutely possible for anyone to enter the classroom. If schools, therefore, are too relaxed in this practice, and not always at the ready for such an unfortunate incident to occur, then here we have a major problem: it becomes dangerous to attempt to lock the previously unlocked door when it is known there is an active shooter situation, and takes extra time to do when really everyone should be hunkering down and also barricading the entry to a classroom - with desks, books, bookcases, chairs, anything. Finally this is being talked about. When we used to have lockdown drills, our school will use the speaker for us to hide and lock our classroom doors but for some reason, my teacher always had to open the door and lock it from the outside and then close it, I always thought was that was very unsafe n dumb.
For me my class didn’t have an intercom that worked properly…or at all..so whenever we had lockdown drills someone would have to come to our class and tell us to hide 🫣 if it was a real school shooting we would be dead simply cuz we wouldn’t know

I remember in elementary school my teachers having to step out into the hall to lock our doors during lock down drills. It never made sense to me even as a child to have to step out into danger to lock the door.

What’s crazy is that I remember the locks being on the inside of every school I went to: private school, middle school, high school, and even in college. The locks were ALWAYS on the inside. The Uvalde incident is probably the only time I’ve ever seen locks on the exterior side.
I work for a middle school, we have a door in the back of our library that anyone can leave unlocked like a deadbolt. Students are too lazy to go through the main entrance and leave the door unlocked for each other when leaving for class. They will even unlock it when they leave class for the bathroom. We can't see that door from the library desk, we don't know when people go in and out of that door let alone who. I have busted multiple kids who have snuck in through that door to ditch class. I've even caught students making out. There is only 1 security camera in the entire library and it can not see that door. I was at another school in another district for a job interview and I noticed that their library doors were the same as ours but their doors required a key to leave unlocked. I brought the idea and my safety concerns up to admin, they ignored me. I brought up the concerns to security and they told me that I should just talk to our school maintenance guy. He agreed with me 100% that it needed to happen but the district locksmiths said my suggestion was "unsafe" and "against fire code." Our school has a serious issue with short staff due to "budget cuts," kids not giving a sh*t, and parents actually telling kids we have no authority over them, that I am waiting for the day that door is used by a mass shooter.
When I was in elementary school, there were NO doors on the classrooms. The front entrance was also NOT secured. You’d walk in and be able to walk to other areas of the building. Thanks to bonds, when it was totally remodeled, they went in and put doors in on all the classrooms and moved the office up to the VERY front of the building. I also remember during drills, when the teachers would have to step out into the hall and put their key in to lock the door. These doors should have seriously had the ability to lock from the inside.
My old school was like this too there was no absolutely NO locks on any doors EVEN THE ENTRANCE and the office was very far from the entrance there were also no security cameras and the building was only 1 story and it seemed pretty flat and its probably because my schools funding had barely ANY money
This is actually how most doors in public schools work here in Florida they work exactly like that except the doors to the outside can only be opened from the inside and will lock themselves shut once they close after u walked out, classroom doors can only be locked by teachers from the outside and same thing happens like outside doors they lock automatically when closed kinda of like emergency exits

I’ll add that doors and door lock mechanism are actually quite durable to gunfire. The bullshit you see on tv of someone shooting a door lock and popping a door open easily is nonsensical. Shooting out a window and reaching in to disengage a panic device is more likely, but even that can be drastically slowed down with security glass aka “security lite kit” to actually shoot out a lock would require a ton of bullets and precise knowledge if were to shoot, spray and pray on a commercial metal door frame and panic device is not going to get it done.
The first door woulda slowed him down a bit....but if you look at the classroom doors...if they woulda locked from the inside.....(like common sense would tell us)...it would have saved even more time. Usually rooms with those skinny windows have something to cover them up for lockdowns....and then the kids could hide in corners where he wouldnt be able to see them.

Whoa, slow down a bit. Classroom function levers and panic devices are standard and have been for 40 years. Their primary goals are : one motion egress with no special skills or knowledge, this is standard on any commercial building. Plenty of people have died over the years from the inability to escape a burning building due to panic or multiple locking devices. This school shooting issue is a relatively new one, and there are indeed specific products to help with it, they are still not mandated by building code, and likely won’t be for awhile. As for classroom doors, the type of lock being shown here is called “classroom function lever” primary goal is to be able to secure a classroom without being locked out by your students. A student could easily lock out teachers and all hell could break loose inside the classroom. These levers are specifically designed for this, and like the panic bar, had other goals in mind during their inception. There are a limited number of options available that do allow locking from the inside with a key, solving both issues, they are quite new to the market and not mandated by code. All this is very expensive as well, that von Duprin exit device shown in this video is about 3000$ for example. I don’t know what supposed “experts” were consulted but clearly none were locksmiths. These challenges are very new to building code, and security hardware. You must consider what the current hardware was designed for and why it works the way it does, before you get some bright idea that kids should be able to walk up and secure a door without credentials, consider the problems ther would cause, likely worse. This is a complicated topic and one must be quite wary of knee jerk reactions. The only legitimate issue here was. Strike misalignment that did not allow one of the doors to lock. Until 2010 or so, schools were places of education, they’ve only recently been expected to operate as high security prison

@@rickbrenner6079 Correct, you could use "Store room function levers" instead, which are always locked, all the time, and cannot be left unlocked. This "forces" the issue, but is not the most convenient or practical, in day to day use. There are also some newer products, that are basically class-room function lever, with keys on both sides, to lock/unlock from either the inside or outside, but the inside handle is always unlocked, only the outside function is controlled. They are pretty new, not mandated by code, expensive, and not field tested.
Doors like those are controlled by someone with a key to prevent others from locking people out involuntarily! That style/model is not for emergency lockouts by anyone without a key! Those doors are good for buildings used commercially!
It hurts even more knowing me as a person knows the chair trick if the door does not lock put the chair leg put it through the nob and twist the chair and all those kids could have survived and the shooter also could have never entered it that haunts me knowing that they all could have survived😢😢
That is not the door he was seen coming in on on surveillance video. The door he came in had a big glass panel on the side and it was a different hallway too.
They need to have exit doors in the class room that lead to the outside so kids can escape . And panic rooms . Kids hiding u der school desks pretending to be asleep I don’t understand that .
At my school some of the classrooms did have exit doors, but some did not. I agree with you on that part. ALL need to have those. Also some of the classrooms led to other rooms and classrooms which led to more emergency exits. The model of our school was kind of complicated. Our teachers had their own keys to the door so they could lock it. Every period when it was time to switch classes, our teachers would lock the door after the students enter or exit the classroom. What does not make sense to me is that in the main entrance where parents, students, or visitors come through, there is a buzzer and camera to see who comes to the door, and if they are allowed to be entered. What about the other entrances? ALL entrances need a key card or buzzer to let students in. Also anyone can act as a parent, student, or teacher. They need to be able to identify parents, from students to even the teachers such as identity access cards or etc so they do not let the wrong person inside.
@@alashajenkins8705 When I worked at my high school as a Para, I had a “white card” which I would use to gain entry at the side doors. After an incident that occurred there on March 4, the district is implementing a new alert system on those “white cards” which you can push a button to summon help in the event of an emergency.
All these excuses about comms and leadership breakdown are pointless. The reason for training and policies (for active shooter situations) is so that when things like comms fail, everyone already knows their job. Also, I keep hearing "outgunned". You don't need a rifle to defeat someone with a rifle. It's a close engagement, and he was not armored. Having a rifle does not make the shooter's rifle less effective. Cowards

We all know the level of incompetence and cowardice the officers demonstrated that day, but I'm curious as to the protocols if only one person, Gov Abbott were in that room with the shooter? Would their protocols have been to not check any door handles? Would they have waited outside for over an hour before deciding it was time to go in? His Grandma ( the one he shot before he went to the school) works at the school as a Teacher's Aide. He would have access to the security and design of the school simply by visiting her there.

Show up, go through 1-2 scenarios on projector, tea break, a few theories, lunch one practical scenario sign attendance go home.
Too much time and emphasis is put on following written policy and procedures to the letter, nothing/ not much on personal initiative and responsibility.
This happens a lot with schools in poor communities. We had a back door as well that was broken and took a while to fix. ACs that don’t work, issues with pests…meanwhile schools on the other side of town have restaurants on campus.

my high school had magnetic locks that each student/faculty had to have an ID card to unlock it, if you weren't attending school (like its summer or you've graduated) the cards aren't activated

Surely a good citizen in Uvalde would have made necessary repairs to the doors. The bureaucracy of work orders and restrictions on who can do the work assures nothing gets done. That's the point, he wasn't locked inside at all. According to video footage, the cops never even attempted to open the classroom doors by even turning the handle, they assumed they were locked. All that time wasted waiting for a master key for doors that can't even be locked from the inside to begin with. Smh 🙄
According to the way the locks worked shooter as well as children might of been prevented from "leaving" the 2 classrooms but nothing was stopping people from "entering" the classrooms. Seems the locks made the doors become 1 way entry points when locked but on the wrong side.

I taught for four years in a classroom which had a broken lock. I complained about it every year. Nothing was ever done. It was noted in all 16 lockdown drills I completed in that room. Parents: please speak up. Districts don't care when teachers complain.

The average teacher invests almost $2k per year into their classroom, we have absolutely no problem paying for things. 1) No locksmith will work on someone else's property without signed consent. 2) We aren't permitted to make any changes to the building unless we go through Admin, as I attempted for years. The kids aren't the only people who die, teachers do too. We are very aware of the risk we take by simply attempting to educate the next generation.

@@loublev5098 1) I don't teach in a unionized state. Many teachers work in states with little or no union representation. 2) Fire Marshall's see absolutely no problem with doors that don't lock. They don't consider shooting situations. A Fire Marshall is more likely to get after me for having window coverings. Typically school doors lock from the outside, so that a child cannot lock themselves in without a teacher. Doors are then kept locked at all times, with a magnet hold the door slightly adjacent. That is standard practice. Fire Marshalls like open doors. Many think that locked doors on exteriors are enough. 3) We've lost a lot of parent involvement since the pandemic. Many just got used to not coming in. I personally welcome parent involvement. Most of the CRT indoctrination and gender indoctrination lies might vanish, if parents could come in and see for themselves that we aren't teaching anything like that. Parents are welcome in my classroom at any time. I haven't had a parent take me up on that since 2019.
A teacher with a gun would not worry about a bad guy easy fix
I worked in a school district for 11 years and I was one of the locksmiths. Doors can not be locked manually from the inside. However all the inside doors were locked from the outside with a key. We had a magnetic strip that would keep the door from latching if the teacher wanted to do that between class changing. If there was a lockdown all the teacher had to do was remove the magnetic strip and close the door locked. Then all the students and teacher were to move to a corner of the classroom were they could not be seen or heard. All of the windows next to the doors were always covered completely. The outside doors were ALWAYS locked and they were checked by the school security regularly during the day. If any door in the district was not working properly It was always priority one to go and fix it, even if the superintendent needed something fixed. All of these safeties were implemented years ago when all of these mass shootings started happening. Safety can be accomplished if people set their minds to it, it is not that hard or impossible. No need to get rid of the back doors like some dumb senator from Texas suggested.

@@cgmason7568 The school district I worked in had 11 schools plus the admin building. You do not have go out of the room to remove the strip. You open the door slightly and remove it and the door locks. It takes a few seconds to do this. This way the teacher does not have to go looking for a key and then go outside the door to lock it. The locks on all the doors were always locked, the magnet just prevents the latch to go into the latch hole. Not sure what you mean by auto locking doors, but if it is an electronic system that has to be installed it sounds costly. There are a lot of poor districts in the US and that might not be affordable. The magnetic strip is pretty cheap and fast.

I remember when I was in high school my teacher told us NOT to barricade the doors in the case of an active shooter (like what you’re supposed to do) because our doors opened outward into the hallway. Our doors were also made of very old wood and could easily be broken down. It’s shameful that this was normal for my school and still is in thousands of schools across the country
I think doors that go outwards are sometimes installed incase of a fire. There's incidents where ppl were trapped because they ended up blocking the door from opening by having a bunch of ppl pushing against a door that goes inward. One case is the NYC triangle shirtwaist fire

Does Uvalde have a fire marshal if so fire them as well. They are the ones requiring doors remain unlock when the building is occupied. This device on the door is so you can get out but you can’t get in. The Fire Marshal apparently was not checking the doors at the school. My high school got rebuilt like 4 years ago, and they made every classroom have huge windows to the hallways. The windows arent reinforced or anything, and they’re like 4 feet wide by 10 feet tall. There’s two windows per classroom.
The worse place to be in case of a shooting would be the second floor since there’s no way of exiting the building unless you go out onto the hallway, run down the stairs and outside. You could also stay inside the classroom and wait till the windows get shot out and oh well rip.
I find it so idiotic how a modern school was built so poorly in case of a shooting. Not only that but the school got a 1mil grant for building a statue and a community park, yet they don’t use that money for a little more security.
Never thought about it but my old elementary school has doors that are eerily similar and huge windows you could just easily shoot out or throw something through to get entry into the school. Schools really need to do a better job before it’s too late.
I think the schools in my town are like that too I'm going to drive around sometime and look cuz I haven't been to the school in years but from what I remember they look like this.. I hope that the other schools around are paying attention to this, and make changes so many people like to believe it's never going to happen in their hometown and they just don't know that it can happen anywhere at any school doesn't matter where you live..
My elementary school didn't have doors, just large openings in the wall. Some teachers would cover it with cabinets to try and make the entrances smaller. Some of the rooms also didn't have walls dividing them. The school was built before regulations on the student to teacher ratio were put in. I really hope that the classrooms have added doors and walls now. Unfortunately the school sits in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city so I don't imagine it will happen.
my elementary school has windows at the top of the walls of concrete and these windows are a bit slim but these windows go across one wall but all teachers are provided with curtains or shutters

Sad thing is, I would bet the majority of schools in this country have just as many basic security failures as Uvalde, if not more. The government doesn't even fund our schools enough to pay teachers what they deserve or hire the additional teachers we need. They are pinching pennies as it is. If we think they're going to fork over for every school in America to have something even as basic as proper doors that lock from the inside and aren't surrounded by windows, we're dreaming. I wonder if Congress would change its tune if they had to hold their sessions in school gymnasiums around the country with no security, just like our children, teachers, and staff have to do every day.

Injured victims and deceased victims’ families need to sue the Texas State Government, the Uvalde School District, and all of the police departments that didn’t go in to stop the shooter; including those cops that went in and only saved their own children or their friends’/co-workers children. This whole avoidable tragedy lays at the feet of all of those incompetent and grossly negligent responders by inaction and trying to cover up the lack of professionalism and not doing their jobs. It’s sickening! Money won’t bring dead children and teachers back, but those families and those recovering will need medical and psychological care. They should be able to move away from that town and out of the state if they choose. All of the agencies involved and especially leaders and cops that are part of the coverup will only learn by having a monetary judgement holding them accountable to pay. Let’s face it, money is all they care about. It’s a sad statement, but after everything coming out on this? Those families deserve justice.

Everytime I pictured this story In my head the walls were bleek and boring like my high-school. To see the colorful elementary wall just really makes me see we will never know exactly what the survivors went thru or what the experience was like. My school (in Germany!) has all classroom doors that lock when they are closed but can always be opened from the inside, never from the outside without a key. Simple design that should include any doors. Out schools are open campus so anybody can walk in but at least the classrooms would be secure.

My school and classroom had these same doors with locks on the outside. It's a fire code issue. Students need to be able to exit from inside quickly. Also, you don't want children to be able to lock a teacher/adult out of the classroom. That's a safety issue. We teachers were trained and drilled to keep doors locked at all times. My guess is that it was the last week of school, parents coming and going for awards ceremonies, class party supplies being brought in, so the door was unlocked for convenience by someone. So tragic and that person will never forgive themselves.

Yes, you are entirely correct... It IS a fire code issue. The facts are contained in NFPA 101, and more specifically, in NFPA 80. Those codes have used science, fact, history, statistics and input from many areas of expertise to create them to keep people safe. With over more than 3000 school fires in a year here in the US you then tell me which is the greater danger to loss of life. Most people with intelligence will answer that fire 🔥🚒 is the greater danger due to greater occurrences.
This makes me thankful for my school’s extra security measures. I’m in a region where there isn’t many shootings but it’s still very important to invest in extra safety, especially at a time like this.

I have worked at 2 different school in diff states and when this happened I said the same! We have to lock doors from outside then get back in class and hide! I always thought this was dumb and the door knob was complicated. You have to turn its a certain way for it to lock, I made sure I practiced a few times. But under duress anyone could mess up!

That’s kind of sick. It feels like they did it on purpose. They basically installed their doors backwards.
No one mentions that the peep window in the door also makes it where the shooter can see which rooms have survivors hiding in it and which ones don't. If they didn't have hallway facing windows, they can just shelter in place and lock the door [well about that]. They won't know which rooms are occupied or vacant and will be wasting time trying to bust into vacant rooms giving the police more time to ste in before there are mass casualties. Especially if they had literally all doors locked and made it where without a room number list, you can't tell what is a class room, caffeteria, janitors closet, restroom, etc. Every door looks identical, has no hall facing windows, and is labeled only with a sequential room #... the creep would be spending most of his time trying to bust down doors to janitors closets, restrooms, etc.
Every one forgets that the shooter went to this school as a child so he knew where everything was. I would be billing to bet that he went straight to the classroom he went to as a child or to the class of a teacher he didn't like.
Majority of the older buildings have classroom doors that can only be locked by physically inserting a key and locking it from the outside. By then it’s too late in a situation as this. Although, we are trained that our doors are to remain locked and closed at all times. With Covid and issues with ventilation it is just a loose, loose situation 😢.

It is a building code requirement that exit doors have panic hardware.

The exit door was either never locked in the first place (which is possible to do depending on how the key is turned), or the latch failed to engage when the teacher removed the prop earlier.
Yes, there are fire codes found in NFPA 101, and more specifically, 80, that deal with exit egress in a fire 🔥🚒 emergency.
That door can be locked from the inside. The exit door with the press-bar to exit is the exact same as those used in my school district, and in order to lock them you place an allen key into the hole on the right of the bar and twist it. All of the administrators in my district have allen keys on their keychains for this purpose.

It’s not a design flaw, the Von Duprin 99 panic device shown here, a proven and reliable design from the 1970’s (still made brand new, today) was designed for fire escape, not Wild West insane land. Furthermore they can be set up to an undefeatable auto lock if speced appropriately ( fire rated 99, store room trim). They are more commonly sold with dogging mechanism and classroom trim however, as it’s far more flexible but less resistant to idiots leaving shit unlocked.

Think about the door to your house. where does it lock from? inside. your bedroom & bathroom doors? inside. there is a reason for that. when they lock from the inside, you both have a layer of threat protection & the ability to easily unlock the door (from the inside) in the event of a fire.

Panic hardware is not really designed to stop an attack in the way you describe. It's meant to secure a building when the business is closed, and it's meant to ensure escape during a fire. Locking from the inside is not a requirement for either one of these goals. This is the way panic hardware has been made for 60 years. Free, one motion egress (escape) is required at all times, you cannot be required to disengage any kind of thumb turn or latch from the inside, in the event of a burning building, full of smoke, people panic and rush for the doors, even the simplest obstacle to escape can, and has lead to mass death. There are many laymen making comments about things they don't understand. Door hardware is far more complex then you realize. Also, I think you are confused by the term "Lock from the outside" these doors are always free egress, you can always escape, lock from the outside means you can't freely enter. Your comparisons to residential hardware are completely irrelevant, commercial is a totally different application, with a different set of requirements, homes do not have to meet fire code, homes do not have 100+ people in them.
It's sickining, I'm from the UK and all my school doors run on key cards (I know this is very common in a lot of UK schools) I do not go to a private school, and go to a large state school in quite a rough area. The doors lock themselves and only teachers have access to the doors they need to open. For example, an English teacher has a key card that can only open doors in the English block. Why isn't this something that is introduced into the USA, it's not something that requires whole new doors. But instead something as simple as replacing the lock. I am obviously not blaming this shooting the fact that the doors have the wrong locks. As I think it's clear what the issue is and why so many shootings happen all across America and my heart goes out to all those families and everyone in America who are stuck in a nation that will not fix the gun law issues.

As a teacher in Texas who has worked in lower income schools- those types of doors that only lock on the outside and do not have an ID badge scanner to get in are very common. We also had many classroom doors that would not lock so we had to learn how to place a student chair a certain way on the door handle for lockdown drills. Teachers tried to address it every year but it always led back to "we don't have the funds." Now, I work in a district that has more funding however, I have never seen a classroom door that is able to lock from the inside.
I bet those excess funds were given as bonuses to the superintnentent to maintain their lavish lifestyle.

This is what you get when you get committees, politicians and boards to design systems.
Looking at the images being shown, all the doors would have failed their first safety test.
Exterior push bar door locks are supposed to automatically lock when doors are sprung shut.
Interior/ classroom doors could have borrowed from the humble toilet door lock- They lock from the inside.
If and when glass/ viewing portals are fitted to doors they should not compromise the lock/ function of the door.
That said, it shouldn’t draw attention away from the incompetence and very serious failures of the school safety officer(s) and law enforcement response.
It is their failings and inactions on the scene that led to the high casualty numbers in the school. The buck stops with them.
Looking at the investigation hearings, it is apparent the department of safety is mixing up the issues, non issues and potential issues into one pot.
The investigation should into the school shooting should start from the moment the first shots we’re fired into the school- What happened?
Issues about playing video games, dead cats in a bag, gun trigger adapter, high capacity magazines gun laws etc are only clouding the investigation.

It’s not that simple. Put a barricade latch on an interior classroom? What happened when a student locks the teacher out and beats a kid to death while everyone watches though the window? There is a reason things are as they are. Panic devices are designed for fire escape, they can be set up to an auto lock, known as “store room function trim” but most opt to have the ability to unlock the door, this leaves staff responsible, not door hardware. A door or lock that cannot be opened or locked clearly doesn’t fulfil it’s basic function. I give the example of the toilet door lock for its simplicity yet high effectiveness.
As for a kid locking a teacher out of a classroom to beat another kid to death, I don’t know how many such incidents are on record but surely that kind of kid would have no problem beating another child to death in an unlocked classroom, a bathroom or the playground and shouldn’t be in that kind of environment in the first place.
I fully agree with you that the door hardware cannot be seen to be responsible for the victims but rather the people involved.
The issue is or should be the determined active shooter on the school premises and what was not done/ could have been done to minimise casualties.

It's so sad to think that those are the kinds of thing schools in the US need to worry about. None of the classrooms in my schools growing up had any locks so that's something i'd never worry about when building a school. I hope things get better and this doesn't have to be a concern in the future

These are just classroom function locks and that's how they always have been, from back in the day before shooters were a thing. Modern classroom intruder function provides interior control of the locked or unlocked outside trim state. Storeroom function would also work but never allow an unlocked exterior. The exterior panic door in question just needs a nightlatch/storeroom function trim that remains locked after key entry and the door can only be held open by "dogging down" the pushbar from inside using a hex/Allen key. The glass is required by law to be a safety type, tempered or laminated with laminated being the better choice as tempered will blow up an go into a tiny pieces, but tempered is cheaper so that's likely what you get. Laminated will stay in place with much additional hacking required to clear the opening. I guarantee when new door hardware is approved the board will likely give the work to some outside vendor and beat the local locksmith who has probably been advocating for improvement all along out of the work. To my knowledge the government has never issued an SIC code for locksmiths to compete on these bids. Door hardware being considered "carpenter work", despite locksmithing being an ancient trade of more knowledgeable individuals. So when the carpenter's are done the story will now be that doors can just be credit carded open or levers tear off from them omitting the throughbolts intended to fasten them on well. Locksmiths are slighted by union and lobby interests and lack the backing to raise the capitol to be legitimately included in the build and renovations process. Locks seem to be carpenter work until the work gets tricky, such as full mortise installations and then the carpenter's come calling to sub us out for a door or two. That's just the American way, like it or not we are in a bad position to help schools out despite being the better choice.

There are two ways to lock and unlock a panic device, they actually work independently and will override each other. Dogging mechanism (aka the hole in the bar from inside) holds the bar down and leave door unlocked, outside trim (aka outside handle, grip, keyhole) will also unlock the door at any time, and depending what type of trim (store room or classroom) can leave the door unlocked all the time.
Good catch…it’s not even a special key just an Allen or hex key. The school set the door to unlock.

The school district and local police should have hardened the glass with security film (think of it as thick clear window tint). It can be added after initial construction. The door issues should have been addressed as well during training for a school shooter incident which allegedly happened about 9 weeks before this disaster. For a few thousand dollars, a school can be secured for a short period until courageous police arrive.

Would have made no difference in this case as the police would have still waited outside for far too long. The shooter's Grandma worked at this school. He had access to its security and design. Doors at a business I worked at were exactly like this. When I asked why, I was told it was to locked up the place when leaving so that no one would come in after everyone left and steal.

It’s not a fire hazard,( the door still opens freely, from the inside, even if locked from the inside, you can always escape, you only control exterior locking) it’s more a practical issue. It’s kind of a big ask to expect a manufactor like allegion, Jackson, assy abbloy or Sargent to design and sell a unicorn bespoke lock just for schools, made in small batches, when the tried and true standard panic device is good for all other commercial applications. As tall an order as it is though, they are working on it. We’ve never “needed” it before. Times are a changing. You’d need to put keyed locks on both sides of the door, only controlling the exterior handle, always allowing free egress via the push bar, it can be done, but it’s a big ask. Fire code won’t permit supplemental locks, you can only have one lock, and it must open with a single motion with no special skills or knowledge. There’s good cause for this, as in the previous 100 years or so you were far more likely to die in a fire then a school shooting.

Focus is always money. Probably less expensive.
There have been some tragic school fires in the past (in which many children died), and I think this door design was with that in mind - that is, easier access for firefighters to get in, in order to evacuate children & teachers from a room, or possibly to contain a fire to just one room (which was hopefully empty to begin with). To give an example, the Our Lady of Angels fire in Chicago, in which 90+ children and several teachers died. There were other problems with the particular school building(s) involved, mainly that there was no convenient way of escaping the school, and that the building wasn’t up to code standards/was quite a bit older. Please don’t assume a design is poor before learning why it was made that way in the first place - true, it may be for a somewhat “outdated” reason (although fires happen quite often, generally speaking, the design might not be with the most recent tragic incidents in mind, because I’m sure it takes several years to develop and adequately test a new door design, even BEFORE adopting it as the standard in a school), but still it is designed that way for a very valid reason. Arguably, an emergency situation that is more likely to occur.
I would also like to add this link. According to these regulations and guidelines, the teacher of a classroom must open the door, lock from outside, shut the door with him- or herself inside, in order for the door not to open from the point of view of anyone in the hallway. IF teachers do not generally keep these doors locked from the outside at all times (meaning anyone leaving to use the bathroom or get something from a locker would have to be let in, and couldn’t get back into the classroom on his or her own) then it is absolutely possible for anyone to enter the classroom. If schools, therefore, are too relaxed in this practice, and not always at the ready for such an unfortunate incident to occur, then here we have a major problem: it becomes dangerous to attempt to lock the previously unlocked door when it is known there is an active shooter situation, and takes extra time to do when really everyone should be hunkering down and also barricading the entry to a classroom - with desks, books, bookcases, chairs, anything. It is possible in this very sad case that the main teacher was attempting to lock the door from the outside before shutting it (which would have locked the entry to anyone coming from the hallway), and was unable to complete this task before the shooter was able to make his way into the joint classrooms. files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED508013.pdf

When we used to have lockdown drills, our school will use the speaker for us to hide and lock our classroom doors but for some reason, my teacher always had to open the door and lock it from the outside and then close it, I always thought was that was very unsafe n dumb.
For me my class didn’t have an intercom that worked properly…or at all..so whenever we had lockdown drills someone would have to come to our class and tell us to hide 🫣 if it was a real school shooting we would be dead simply cuz we wouldn’t know

I remember in elementary school my teachers having to step out into the hall to lock our doors during lock down drills. It never made sense to me even as a child to have to step out into danger to lock the door.

What’s crazy is that I remember the locks being on the inside of every school I went to: private school, middle school, high school, and even in college. The locks were ALWAYS on the inside. The Uvalde incident is probably the only time I’ve ever seen locks on the exterior side.

I work for a middle school, we have a door in the back of our library that anyone can leave unlocked like a deadbolt. Students are too lazy to go through the main entrance and leave the door unlocked for each other when leaving for class. They will even unlock it when they leave class for the bathroom. We can't see that door from the library desk, we don't know when people go in and out of that door let alone who. I have busted multiple kids who have snuck in through that door to ditch class. I've even caught students making out. There is only 1 security camera in the entire library and it can not see that door. I was at another school in another district for a job interview and I noticed that their library doors were the same as ours but their doors required a key to leave unlocked. I brought the idea and my safety concerns up to admin, they ignored me. I brought up the concerns to security and they told me that I should just talk to our school maintenance guy. He agreed with me 100% that it needed to happen but the district locksmiths said my suggestion was "unsafe" and "against fire code." Our school has a serious issue with short staff due to "budget cuts," kids not giving a sh*t, and parents actually telling kids we have no authority over them, that I am waiting for the day that door is used by a mass shooter.
When I was in elementary school, there were NO doors on the classrooms. The front entrance was also NOT secured. You’d walk in and be able to walk to other areas of the building.
Thanks to bonds, when it was totally remodeled, they went in and put doors in on all the classrooms and moved the office up to the VERY front of the building.
I also remember during drills, when the teachers would have to step out into the hall and put their key in to lock the door. These doors should have seriously had the ability to lock from the inside.

I’ll add that doors and door lock mechanism are actually quite durable to gunfire. The bullshit you see on tv of someone shooting a door lock and popping a door open easily is nonsensical. Shooting out a window and reaching in to disengage a panic device is more likely, but even that can be drastically slowed down with security glass aka “security lite kit” to actually shoot out a lock would require a ton of bullets and precise knowledge if were to shoot, spray and pray on a commercial metal door frame and panic device is not going to get it done.
The first door woulda slowed him down a bit....but if you look at the classroom doors...if they woulda locked from the inside.....(like common sense would tell us)...it would have saved even more time.
Usually rooms with those skinny windows have something to cover them up for lockdowns....and then the kids could hide in corners where he wouldnt be able to see them.
The door is not the problem here, the gun is. The longer we spend arguing about it, the more people are going to get killed. If this door was locked he would have just waited for people to come outside instead. Last I checked there are no doors outside.

Keep in mind the goals of the orginal "Classroom function lever" the industry standard for 40 years. #1 only the teacher can lock the door #2 class can be secured during school closure/after hours, #3 lock can be left unlocked for bathroom breaks and day to day practical application. With these goals in mind, show me a better lock that you can purchase off the shelf? Lock also must maintain free egress from the classroom, and be a single device on the door (no multiple locks) it should also meet ADA compliance... go ahead, i'll wait while you find something...
Whoa, slow down a bit. Classroom function levers and panic devices are standard and have been for 40 years. Their primary goals are : one motion egress with no special skills or knowledge, this is standard on any commercial building. Plenty of people have died over the years from the inability to escape a burning building due to panic or multiple locking devices. This school shooting issue is a relatively new one, and there are indeed specific products to help with it, they are still not mandated by building code, and likely won’t be for awhile. As for classroom doors, the type of lock being shown here is called “classroom function lever” primary goal is to be able to secure a classroom without being locked out by your students. A student could easily lock out teachers and all hell could break loose inside the classroom. These levers are specifically designed for this, and like the panic bar, had other goals in mind during their inception. There are a limited number of options available that do allow locking from the inside with a key, solving both issues, they are quite new to the market and not mandated by code. All this is very expensive as well, that von Duprin exit device shown in this video is about 3000$ for example. I don’t know what supposed “experts” were consulted but clearly none were locksmiths. These challenges are very new to building code, and security hardware. You must consider what the current hardware was designed for and why it works the way it does, before you get some bright idea that kids should be able to walk up and secure a door without credentials, consider the problems ther would cause, likely worse. This is a complicated topic and one must be quite wary of knee jerk reactions. The only legitimate issue here was. Strike misalignment that did not allow one of the doors to lock. Until 2010 or so, schools were places of education, they’ve only recently been expected to operate as high security prison

You’re right. Doors that can lock from the inside by anyone could mean a student could purposely lock a teacher out of the room to do something nefarious and that is
a whole different set of issues the school district would have to contend with. It’s like there’s no solution, only trade-offs in this situation.
Helpful explanation of external locks. Wouldn't any practice drills uncover the issues that arose at this school? Terrible outcome for the kids and teachers that bled out.
@@rickbrenner6079 Correct, you could use "Store room function levers" instead, which are always locked, all the time, and cannot be left unlocked. This "forces" the issue, but is not the most convenient or practical, in day to day use. There are also some newer products, that are basically class-room function lever, with keys on both sides, to lock/unlock from either the inside or outside, but the inside handle is always unlocked, only the outside function is controlled. They are pretty new, not mandated by code, expensive, and not field tested.
Doors like those are controlled by someone with a key to prevent others from locking people out involuntarily! That style/model is not for emergency lockouts by anyone without a key! Those doors are good for buildings used commercially!
It hurts even more knowing me as a person knows the chair trick if the door does not lock put the chair leg put it through the nob and twist the chair and all those kids could have survived and the shooter also could have never entered it that haunts me knowing that they all could have survived😢😢
That is not the door he was seen coming in on on surveillance video. The door he came in had a big glass panel on the side and it was a different hallway too.
They need to have exit doors in the class room that lead to the outside so kids can escape . And panic rooms . Kids hiding u der school desks pretending to be asleep I don’t understand that .
When I was in elementary school, some of my classrooms had doors that led to the outside. Those were the doors we’d exit through during a fire drill.
At my school some of the classrooms did have exit doors, but some did not. I agree with you on that part. ALL need to have those. Also some of the classrooms led to other rooms and classrooms which led to more emergency exits. The model of our school was kind of complicated. Our teachers had their own keys to the door so they could lock it. Every period when it was time to switch classes, our teachers would lock the door after the students enter or exit the classroom. What does not make sense to me is that in the main entrance where parents, students, or visitors come through, there is a buzzer and camera to see who comes to the door, and if they are allowed to be entered. What about the other entrances? ALL entrances need a key card or buzzer to let students in. Also anyone can act as a parent, student, or teacher. They need to be able to identify parents, from students to even the teachers such as identity access cards or etc so they do not let the wrong person inside.

When I worked at my high school as a Para, I had a “white card” which I would use to gain entry at the side doors.
After an incident that occurred there on March 4, the district is implementing a new alert system on those “white cards” which you can push a button to summon help in the event of an emergency.
All these excuses about comms and leadership

engagement, and he was not armored. Having a

I work in a brand new school and my door can also only be locked from the outside. Insane.

We all know the level of incompetence and cowardice the officers demonstrated that day, but I'm curious as to the protocols if only one person, Gov Abbott were in that room with the shooter? Would their protocols have been to not check any door handles? Would they have waited outside for over an hour before deciding it was time to go in? Would they have done nothing and allowed that ONE government official to be slaughtered like those NINETEEN children and TWO teachers? I think we all know the answer to that.
The students, faculty & staff of Robb Elementary were very poorly served by the Texas Board of Education. Gross negligence, poor design & inadequate training ALL AROUND 😡
