The mind blowing thing for me is the way they manage to implement proper firearm animations. Weapon type animation in Skyrim has always been a big barrier modders couldn't overcome, that was why guns were added, they're all categorized as crossbows, using crossbow animation set. Now this is impressive..... even have reloading animations.

    • @Dean.....
      @Dean..... Месяц назад

Most developers are using proprietary licensed engines now that have license agreements that explicitly do not allow them to provide users with advanced dev tools for modding. Combine that with the fact that virtually all non-indie dev/publishing entities are actively hostile towards modding (for several reasons), it just isn't likely to happen. Case in point, see how the average gamer views Bethesda as a development studio and how they compare them to fans and their fan projects. It simply makes the developers look bad and or incompetent which isn't good for your studio. Then you have the future issue of running into problems when releasing your next game because your previous title remains a competing product that can actively hinder the sales of your new product. Remember when online competitive games had a server browser and you could host your own servers? The reason why they don't anymore is precisely because of the last issue I described above. Combine that with an active community that's constantly updating, improving, and making content for your old game, this is a problem for you if you're in the business of making money.

Guards in Redemption would attack on sight if they saw you feeding, etc, and would be quickly killed by your coterie. If I'm remembering rightly, they'd also just respawn whenever you left the area and returned. There was also no way to escape them once they truned hostile without leaving the area or getting rid of them. Also no stealth, and feeding even remotely near them would turn them hostile.

  • @Xaltar_

There are numerous reasons to go with it being a mod for an older game:
    1. If this had been done in UE/Unity etc it would have been slammed with a cease and desist.
    2. Skyrim is an RPG style game and already has many of the systems in place to do something like this as well as the tools to create new systems
    3. Skyrim has a massive community and host of mod resources to pull from.
    4. Skyrim is an old game now and it's community already knows how to do pretty much everything vs a newer title or new game engine like UE where everything would need to be figured out and done from scratch.
    5. Skyrim being old will help stave off legal action/cease and desists.
Will be watching this closely, I loved redemption :)

1:02 This is MASSIVELY incorrect. World of Darkness (WOD) has NUMEROUS entries into the franchise with each having their own source and splat books. That's like saying The M1 Garand is the definition of a firearm (dumb and ignorant to say just because it's popular among other peers). Vampire: The Masquerade (VTM) rates as one of the most popular, but you're doing a MASSIVE disservice ignoring the rest of it. For crying out loud, a typical able-bodied Garou (from Werewolf: The Apocalypse) would murder several Kindred (VTM) long before going down, and that's not touching changelings, ghosts, hunters, mages, and mummies.

My brother would play Vampire the Masquerade tabletop roleplay with his theater friends when I was younger. I never played the tabletop roleplay, and never engaged in Dungeon and Dragon type play in real life, but I owned a few of the rule books and the lore and idea of the game always enticed me. I never had real life friend that were nerdy enough to role play with me but the maker of the games (Whitewolf I think) had chat rooms with Mods where you could make a character and engage in whitelisted role play. It was fun for a young introvert like myself. When Vampire the Masquerade came out in game form, it was one my favorite games of all time. I've never met anyone that has liked it like myself. Everyone likes CoD or Madden or Rocket Legue or Apex, but nobody I've met that's a gamer ever played Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. It still has a good place in my heart from when I was a young kid playing on PC. That and the game Postal.

I've felt that Vampire / World of Darkness / Chronicles of Darkness is a cursed property. It's currently split up into two distinct variations (World/Chronicles) and the older game is also concurrently split a bit more as there isn't really a flagship edition among the fanbase. Also, the companies that have held the rights to the TTRPG have been... well, it's been interesting. And despite having a fantastic IP, it's often been handled quite poorly. I really think that it should have a bigger share of the market but for terrible handling of visibility and accessibility and marketing.
The video games have likewise had a bit of a cursed existence. I was barely aware of _Redemption_ but had played _Bloodlines_ back in the day. Buggy as hell, sometimes to the point of being almost unplayable. And yet, still such an engaging game that you just want to power through the bugs. Genuinely one of the best RP video game experiences I've had -- there have been some better ones here and there, but it's certainly still solidly in the top 5. Since then there have been other games... many of which are just not very good. Swan Song, a recent Vampire game, was pretty awful -- one of the worst-controlling games I've played since the PS1 era where they were still figuring out how a game in 3D should feel to play and just not that engaging. There was a Werewold the Apocalypse game that was mostly a beat'em up trying to pass itself off as deeper narrative adventure in the style of the current Playstation trend of games. Also a couple pretty decent visual novel games on switch. Heart of the Forest being the one that made me think "hey, there's more to this visual novels than them just being dating sims or for being pervy to cartoon women." And two Vampire ones that were pretty decent as well. There's also a battle royale vampire game that completely tosses out the primary themes and draw of Vampire for just being Overwatch but dark.
Whenever it releases, this mod will apparently be the best Vampire the Masquerade game in a couple decades. And it's a Skyrim mod.

100% agree with you. Really says a lot when the best, most recent, VTM game I've played has been a text game on Steam (Night Road). Redemption was more like Diablo (long dungeons with nothing but fighting and looting) than anything else, but it did have a nice story and characters, imo. Also, back in the day, it had a multiplayer mode that let you run your own chronicles with friends on the internet.

another layer of legal protection would be to require the mod to have access to a copy of VTMB and the install process could pull assets from the original game (like the text files for dialogue, music, voice lines, etc) and convert them automatically to the skyrim mod.
This way you're not breaking copyright by distributing copyrighted content, you're just giving people tools to modify content they already legally own.

Just as a slight correction, not all WOD ttrpgs are vampire themed. Vampire: The Masquerade is definitely the most famous, but there are others like Demon: The Fallen where you play as fallen angels, Hunter: The Reckoning where you play as monster hunters imbued with magical power, and Changeling: The Dreaming where you play as people affected by evil Fae magic. They are making new editions of these games to this day and would highly recommend looking into them if you enjoy an urban RPG with supernatural twists and a hint of 90's edge.

This looks amazing! I only know VtM from friends who LARPed it, but vampires are cool and I'm always interested in any project based on Skyrim's engine and mechanics. I know some of the aesthetics are a bit dated now, but Skyrim is such an easy game to figure out and navigate when it comes to game setup menus, inventory, interacting with the world around you, and understanding your active perks and effects, it makes me wish more games operated in a similar manner. It might not work so well for creating an experience like the Souls games, where you need precise reactions to counter different enemy attack patterns, but those aren't the types of games I personally enjoy playing anyways (although I love watching others play them!).

Small but important correction: The “World of Darkness” is more like a setting and a system where several tabletop games are set, it’s not some big interconnected Marvel-like universe. It’s closer to how DnD and Pathfinder are related to each other. Vampire the Masquerade was the most popular tabletop game from that setting and system.
So VtM is just one of those tabletop games (and it’s still going today) and is basically like DnD with a much bigger emphasis on story and role-playing and way, way, way less emphasis on combat. Redemption was just the first attempt to adapt VtM into the video-game space. Later, we got Bloodlines…. And Bloodlines 2, which I don’t really wanna talk about. Those games are not sequels to Redemption - they’re their own thing, hell, the two Bloodlines games aren’t going to be typical sequels.
    Story-Time now:
On the note of “what happened to the old devs?” you can easily look this up. Troika was Tim Cain’s company (the guy who wrote the code for Fallout 1 and 2, he wasn’t in charge by the time of Bloodlines though) who made Bloodlines. But his business partner Leonard Boyarsky still was there and in charge - he made all the art for the old Fallouts. But Activision owned the rights to VtM - but Redemption wasn’t made by Troika, it was a different studio because Activision owned the rights and licensed it to whoever would do the job - and to make matters more confusing, Bloodlines was made in the Source Engine.
This is where it gets messy now. Valve licensed the engine to Troika on one condition: that VtM: Bloodlines releases a day before Half-Life 2, surprise nobody bought it and it was super unfinished and unpolished but Troika had zero choice in the matter. Activision took that as a failure, and wouldn’t delay the game - even though it was seriously unfinished - they then shuttered Troika after Bloodlines flopped. Bloodlines did eventually get finished by modders through a small miracle called the “Unofficial Patch” which basically finished Bloodlines as it was meant to be. But there will never be an official remaster because the game was broken - a remaster wouldn’t work, even with the fan patch - Bloodlines would have to be remade, that’s the only option. So corporate shenanigans killed Troika and has cursed the Bloodlines name ever since.
The rights to Bloodlines specifically got snapped up by Paradox. A random developer (Hardsuit Labs) then got given the job to make Bloodlines 2. It’s been in development hell for 6+ years now - changed developer as well, it’s now the Chinese Room - this doesn’t fill me with hope because they’ve only ever made walking sims and they took all the mechanical depth out of Amnesia. But Bloodlines 2 is finally being released in a couple months or something but I have zero hope for the game at all and I’m sad about this.
