As a woman from NYC in her late 50's, I don't know why this video was so fascinating to watch, but I loved every second of it. You are a brilliant dude and I need you in my life. Take care out there and safe travels
There's something about repair and DIY videos that's relaxing and soothing. Idk, I'm just an idiot that enjoys this type of content. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to seeing what you're up to on your next adventure
Always happy to watch your videos. You put detail, charm, authenticity, and intrigue into all your work. I appreciate you a lot. When your channel gets big (as it deserves to be), remember me. :)
Wow, Max, as always I am amazed at your skill in dealing with all these mechanical and electrical issues. Hopefully at this point, you are "good to go" for your next adventure!
Heya Odyssey, I wanted to say that I absolutely love your content. I have a 7.3 powerstroke shuttle bus camper that unfortunately has some bad vibration issue's due to old suspension components that I am going to be changing myself soon, as it caused one of my metal transmission lines to crack while I was on a roadtrip, and I had to do an on the spot fix in the dead of night in the Arizona desert. That short clip you included of you fixing your driveshaft in the desert really resonated with me, your content is a breath of fresh air in terms of realism and honesty. Nowadays it is really easy for people to see van-life media and get a romanticized image, but the truth is far more interesting, and you make that truth entertaining.
@@dustyodyssey also I would still only use 99% iso for repairs. Sticky PCB in the area you cleaned is the worst that will come of it. We'd still send them out like that from Phoenix Contact when I worked there if we had to repair any boards.
@@dustyodyssey another engineer here just to confirm nothing wrong with using pure IPA for cleaning, that was just a coating to keep moisture away that got gummy. You can buy a spray can with conformal coating, just to recoat the PCB against moisture.
Great video, Max! You could start a sub channel based completely around van clean up. I'm continuously impressed with your ability to take stuff apart.
Mate, some of the previous owners really skimped on maintenance! Impressive skills you have. Most mechanical and critical electrical I get a mech/sparky to do it.
remember when you thought the transit connect was a mechanical headache? lol.. as awesome as this van is, the lack of parts in north america must be hell
Coming from a former AWD car owner, if you call Tirerack they will shave a brand new tire to match your other 3 for like $30-$40 and ship it to you. Just give them the measurement of the tread left in the current tires. Sucks having to cut good rubber off a new tire and still pay the full amount for it, but obviously considerably less than 4 brand new tires and can be a wallet saver if you have tens of thousands of miles left on the other 3.
Wow, that's a great tip! The other thing is that the tires I was running are not being made any more, so I don't think that would have helped me in this situation, but that is good to know!
@@dustyodyssey yeah I saw after making my comment the complete swap worked out in the end for you, which is good. My car (WRX) had a tear in the tread similar to yours and I also had to get 4 new ones, but needed to replace them anyway due to age and wear. The last incident before I sold it (very bad pot hole hit), I wasn't about to drop $700 on new Pirelli's again, when they had 50% tread left, so I called TireRack after hearing about it, and it was a very painless order, can't even tell they shaved it. Just gave the guy over the phone the tread depth and CC info and it showed up in less than a week. I spread this gospel to all AWD owners I know haha.
I'm unsure of your soldering experience so I don't want to offend, but one thing that helps A LOT with soldering is to hold the iron to the pin or whatever you're soldering to to get the metal hot before you put solder to it.
@4:04 you have good reason to be apprehensive of angle grinders. Every time I pick one up I ask myself "Is there ANY other tool you could use for this?". I have a good friend that was almost killed by an angle grinder disc flying apart while he was on a mission trip in Africa.
I agree with with just about all of these comments. You are great at figuring out the problems and having the skills to fix them. As with everything we own there comes maintenances, repairs, and upgrades, whether it is a house, car or pair of shoes. And as always good video. Be safe and have fun.
Have you checked that your glowplugs are actually working? Having done some reading around other vans having similar issues, sometimes your plugs start to fail and you're not even aware.
Anyone have any recs for hiace lifts/suspension? Just upgraded from a 95 previa to a 97 Himedic and the suspension is the only thing holding her back from some serious adventures. Love these videos!
Jeez, man, you've had a ton of repairs to do on this Hiace. I was considering buying one. But, without a dedicated space and not being incredibly mechanically versed to work on mine, I wonder if it's worth getting one now.
Hello. Interested to know what tyres you fitted and what you think of them for mixed driving. My 195/80 R15 Dynapro ATs are coming to the end of their life and 215/75 are practically the same diameter. I also like those are 106/103R, but not quite sure what the two weight ratings are for. Mine are 96 and I think the extra weight rating might be better, too. I know LT is for light truck or something, but can you post specs? DEFA (company) make block heaters that plug into unused engine block ports. I don’t have a block heater but on the Hiace engines their heaters can be fitted to the rear port of the block (above the flywheel. This is into the coolant (I think) and it might need more energy than heating the oil pan, but it’s maybe another option? Interested to see the bigger alternator. Mine also has the integrated vacuum pump so I’m unsure if I could do that upgrade without changing the vacuum pump. Where is the vacuum (brake booster) generated on your van, please? My vacuum also runs the 4WD selection. Lastly, the transmission mount with the four ‘square’ holes is available as a Toyota part and also an aftermarket one. The aftermarket is something like “FEBEST TM-101 Engine mount for TOYOTA HIACE” Loads of other great stuff here and thanks for sharing! Ah: The load index on light truck tyres is different from that of passenger cars: it usually has two ratings separated by a slash. This is because most light truck tyres are designed to be used in a dual back wheel system with two tyres side by side. The first number is the load rating when the tyre is used alone and the second is the rating when it is used as a dual tyre. The dual rating is usually lower to cover situations where one tyre in the pair fails and the other has to carry the full load.
They are the Kumho Road Venture AT52 (215/75R15). And yeah, 106 is the load index of the single tire, not with dualies. The tires have been good so far, I expected them to be louder on the road, but they're not too bad. Snow performance has also been good, but some of the siping does not go all the way through the tread block, so as the tire wears, the snow performance will significantly reduce, which is kind of annoying. I looked for the freeze plug and couldn't find it. I read that the transmission has to be removed? Maybe when the clutch goes on this thing I will fit a block heater, but for now I'll see if the oil pan heater helps at all. I think the 1kz has a vacuum pump built in. I actually don't know for sure...
Love this kind of content!! I've been putting off doing the "Big 3" wiring upgrade for my upgraded 125A alternator but this was helpful. I am curious though, why the hell would you ever try and filter coolant through a water filter and then drink out of it?!!
It's out of stock, but this is where I got it, I guess if you message the seller they might list more. TBH I'm having some issues with the new alternator so maybe not the best buy. www.ebay.com/itm/140-AMP-UPGRADE-ALTERNATOR-TOYOTA-4Runner-Hilux-Surf-Hiace-3-0-DIESEL-1KZ-T-TE-/153234922182?fs=e&s=cl
I got the F133S, if you have a 1kz hiace be aware that it does hang down kind of low. I think the cross-member is lower, but it still looks pretty exposed.
