I drove the dempster all the way up to Tuktoyaktuk on the last days of june, took me 4 days up an down. I chose this specific time of the year because of the summer equinox .. I wanted to drive during night time and see the midnight sun on these mountains... The most breathtaking scenery I ever saw. Absolutely unique and humbling..
I worked on the oil rigs in the arctic in the 70,s. Thousands of men and ships in Tuk. They used the pingos to freeze meat and other disposables like giant freezers. 👍
So many skills! Love seeing where you’ve gone. But part of what I love is that this is not an ordinary neighborhood drive. Appreciate your photography videography. Bummer about that camera lens! Tricky wind
I have been wondering if I could set my van up the way I have things in my bedroom with my desk and computer etc.........Seeing what you have done showed me I can do exactly that.....Your setup is exactly what I want....and what I am going to do!...
Love seeing another Toyota make the trip! Though yours was probably better suited for the terrain. I took my 02 Lexus LS up the Dempster in July this year. We bottomed out a few times from going slightly too fast when the whole road divots came up. Only took a rock to the windshield that cracked it. Our friends however in their Ford popped a tire and had to replace both front wheel bearings in Inuvik. I loved seeing how DIFFERENT the environment around looks in just a short few months later in the year. Fantastic video.
I Love the motto of the channel. I love the vibe in the videos and the background music is so interesting and close to my taste. It's awesome what one person can do with 2023 technology and hard work! Thanks for the vids!
You made it!!! to the Arctic Ocean, but man that water looked ice cold! 🥶 Sorry about the alternator issues. Sure hope you can get that resolved soon. 🤞
That song is Concept 10 by Kodomo. His album "Still Life" is one of my favorite albums to put on during a long drive: ruclips.net/p/PLfIgTdTqY7qf6Ql3YAvsT1qHtd7QgyFcQ&si=k8WTbZb-ANit8gIi
Wow, the views are soo good. But from the video it looked like you did not enjoy it very much? Also I am chocked you did not take a closer shot of that Land Cruiser 70 that we see at 8:14 lol
Love your stuff dusty! Crazy up there ain't it. I toured the four corners of AK on my motorcicle a number of years ago taking both the Dempster & the Dalton to the northern extremities. Almost got to dip my toes in the Artic. Denalia was a zoo. Homer Spit and Valdez were kinda cool. In the end I ferried from Valdez to Bellingham, WA which was blast. I did it in August and it was wet, freezing cold at times with some snow, beautiful, scary, and bug nuts. Camping w/ bears is scary as sheet. Always had the head net and rambo knife 😂with me. Unrelated... Banff is kinda my favorite spot in north America.
I really need to go back and watch your videos in order. If you do ever end up going east, I do know of a few places here in Indiana you can stay. Hope all is well and you're enjoying your travels! Happy trails!
Whoa. I was up there last summer. The road was in much better condition. I only have a brief shower over 4+ days. Bummer about the alternator. I was cheap and didn't replace my battery before I left and it died when I got back to Dawson City (bought a new one at the same place you got your alternator). Moral of the story: Replace anything on your car that has even the smallest chance of failing if you're going to do this drive, and be prepared for anything. Great video. Next time I go back I plan to take more video. Your video was inspirational to take more time, and record more memories.
Fricking A classvideo brother, and i came across your content by accident, but i'm glad i did, you're a really great video content provider. Keep pushing man. Unbelievably good content.
I have a switch on the signal wire from the ignition to the DC-DC charger, so I can turn it off. I didn't upgrade the alternator and its cables, so I wanted to be able to stop charging the house battery when the alternator is supplying a lot of current to the vehicle battery. LED headlights would cut rainy night power use if I can find some that aren't super-bright, but that seems a bit complicated so I haven't done it. Hey wait, was that a musk ox hide on the wall of that diner? :)
Awesome to watch your videos the time and effort you put in to them is fantastic and you are down to earth keep making videos!!! From australia here so you have a big audience
I've been planning a solo trip on the Dempster Hwy to Tuktoyaktuk, but I'm not sure my Subaru Outback is the vehicle for the trip. I sold my F-250 and Bronco so now I am looking for a rugged vehicle or Van that can handle trips such as this. I like the idea of a reliable customized van. My impatience is probably going to lead me to go ahead and drive my Subaru on the trip. Thank you for this informative video. I really enjoyed it.
Wow, scary road. Glad you made it, what a great adventure. Don't think I would of been brave enough to drive that highway. Your videos keep getting better if that was even possible from your formally great videography. Had moments when I was traveling like you do on, "WHAT NEXT?" Having a goal is important and I am sure you will figure it out. And a question, would the parts on your high output alternator fix your current alternator? If so they could be removed and shipped to you.
This was an Awesome real life van life video.... Great video footage. You did trip really quickly... was that because it was later in the summer season, closer to Autumn?
I actually felt like I was taking my time, most people take 2-3 days to drive from Dawson to Tuk. You kind of have to keep moving though because there’s not many places to pull over due to the permafrost and there are long stretches of road with a whole lot of nothing.
Where did you get your MPH/Voltmeter suite? I recently bought a Hiace grand cabin G, and then found your videos. Can't wait to build mine out! Love your setup!
That’s a cool idea! There’s a chance that I have the entire return trip saved on my dash cam. the quality would be lacking but it might be fun to put together. thanks!
@@dustyodyssey Yeah the scenery looked really pretty and most people will never venture there in their lives. As a funny aside I just realized you look just like Curtis Yarvin lol.
Hey man nice video. I saw you editing wearing audio technicas, which is fine but they make open-back headphones too and those might be better to mix with when you are in the absolute middle of nowhere, so you can still hear outside sounds if any. I'd get paranoid wearing those m50x's or whatever you had on in the middle of nowhere, I've owned them I know you legitimately cannot hear ANYTHING when those are on your head. Buy some open backs for situational awareness (opens also sound 10x better anyway, I recommend akg)
I appreciate the concern. Honestly, if something bad is going to happen there's usually not much I can do about it other than lock my doors and hope for the best, I do make sure to lock up when I am editing though haha. Do you follow DankPods? I would love some AKGs
i cant help but notice that your "T-BELT" (timing belt, I'd assume) light has been on almost this entire trip - is that something that you have deemed unnecessary to deal with or are you just ignoring it and moseying along per usual? or both? interested in what that warning light entails as i'm looking into a couple vehicles with the same motor/ warning light on dash. anyways thanks for sharing this great adventure with us
The timing belt was replaced early at 88000 by the previous owner. To turn off the light you have to pull out the gauge cluster and I’m too lazy to do that. The light will turn off at 200000
Enjoyed the videos….great camera work. I essentially have the same van a 1994 Hiace super custom, with a two inch lift. Question: Is there a preferred site you use to get parts? I have a few rear taillights covers that need replacing. I have been told yahoo Japan and/or find a place that can 3d print them. Just curious what you have found/use. Thanks
Do you have a couple of deep cell batteries that charge up as you are driving and also charging from solar panels on the roof? I have one of these imported from Japan. How does it feel like having a right hand drive? Im from Australia
I have a couple lithium batteries. RHD feels normal to me now haha. Although the rare times that I have to overtake on a 2 lane road can be kinda hard to see.
Where'd you get that GPS speedometer with the voltage meter? I have a GPS speedometer for my Mitsubishi Delica, but yours is much nicer! Love the content by the way. I subscribed and can't wait for more videos!
Did you air down your tires at all on the rough roads? Looks like you have enough tire to have lowered it to about 20psi and take come of the bumpiness out. Enjoyed the series. I lived vicariously through you, a road trip I have always wanted to take :) but here I am being an office rat in the ol rat wheel lol.
I didn’t air down, I was afraid that would leave me vulnerable to a sidewall puncture, though in hindsight it would have made things a lot smoother. I will be back in the rat cage soon enough 🐭

Drive up and down the dempster in a semi all winter. Love seeing people have fun along the way! Can’t wait to get up there in my van next summer
Wow, your videography, editing and storytelling has improved so much since you started this trip! Keep up the hard work!
I enjoyed this very much. Thank you.
What a cool look into the Dempster Highway, thanks for sharing!

That would be a loong drive! But totally worth it!
So cool you found an similar model to your van 🎉 9:59

It's a great van, enjoy!

I just discovered your channel and thought this video was awesome. A trip i'd love to take.

You’ll do fine in the subaru! Just make sure your tires are good, carry a spare and drive slow, and you’ll be fine :)
just finding yourt channel and I love it! your videos are shot so well and you see like such a fun and adventurous guy! Subbed!

I drove the Dempster in August 2023 in an 02 Honda Odyssey... The washboard was quite terrible.
I’ve found a 1zpresso hand grinder and aeropress to be phenomenal for vanlife
that sounds like a great combo

The van tour? June

New sub. What was the purpose of the tape on the headlight lens??
A rock punched a hole in my headlight, so I wanted to make sure things stayed together as my headlights are glass. Thanks for following along!

I think I would prefer the snow to the mud
I'm thinking the mellow nomad.
Enjoyed the videos….great camera work.

Is there a preferred site you use to get parts?
I have a few rear taillights covers that need replacing. I have been told yahoo Japan and/or find a place that can 3d print them.
Just curious what you have found/use.
Thanks
I usually look up part numbers on toyoDIY and order from amayama. You might find a facebook group or forum with local options for something like that

Why folks choose to endure the Dempster? Because you can doesn't mean you should.
It wasn’t that bad, I made it in my Lexus sedan. I had good weather though out the 3 days though
One more useless caravan life 😁
