This is so cool to watch, knowing that my uncle was one of the people who built that pipeline. He moved from Arizona to Alaska to help build it and then he got that Northwest fever in his blood and lived in Washington State from then on.
The highway has changed a lot since I was there in the early 1980's. So much better and wider. We only went as far as the Arctic Circle. Picked some wild blueberries on the Arctic Circle (to make a memory) which made a really good blueberry cobbler when we got back to our campground. Back then, we were advised not to go any further than the Arctic Circle because the road got worse beyond that. It was pretty bad even getting that far back then. Very few mature trees when I was there...they have grown a lot. You're having an amazing journey that you will cherish the rest of your life. Enjoy every minute of it and be safe.
They are definitely working on the road and it’s not bad in places but I’m guessing it’s impossible to ever made it great all the way because of the weather. Thank you 😊
Went to Alaska twice , in 1989 and 1993. Been to some island south of Anchorage. Stayed overnight in a log cabin on legs. The 2nd floor was the first floor. Because of the bears.

I had a friend that worked on the pipeline in the mid 70s, he was paid $25 an hour as a welder’s helper. Trust me, that was a lot of money in those days. As far as the Dalton Highway goes, if you can manage those potholes, you’re ready to travel in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas (I consider all three as my home) after heavy rains 😅. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, John, this was a fantastic trip and can't wait to see the rest of it. The scenery was great of course the burnt part wasn't so much. I could never have made this drive because I'd have to stop now and then. Yukon River was very wide and so long. I don't know much about Alaska so this trip is great and so beautiful. Thank you. I WAS REALLY WONDERING ABOUT THE RENT CAR SITUATION!! AN FRIEND OF ONE OF MY KANSAS COUSINS RECENTLY PURCHASED AN NEW CHEVROLET PICKUP WITH AN OFF ROAD HEAVY DUTY OPTION! HE RECENTLY HAD AN WARRANTY ISSUE AND TOOK IT TO AN DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. THEY VOIDED HIS WARRANTY FOR DRIVING ON FRANKLIN COUNTY KANSAS GRAVEL ROADS!!!
I wonder how legal their voiding of the warranty is. If you are using the public roads available, what can you do? If course, if they are being abusive of the vehicle, that is a different story.
Had to giggle about not worrying out of Light! Nope you don’t need to be concerned with that! Worry about running out of sleep! Spent about 5 years in the military in Alaska. Remember to Sleep! Hope you brought a dark out mask, but dark out curtains work well! 😉
I had two nephews who were there with the Army. If the Army would of let them remain there, they would of likely of been lifers. They both loved it! But the Army brought them both back to the Carolinas, which they didn't like. So they wouldn't reenlist after that. Driving that road , to me, would be fun. Had plenty of practice with long hours and crappy road conditions. Surprised we didn't see any snow. But I imagine we will before you hit the north coast.
My uncle worked on the Alaskan pipeline in the beginning, he made a lot of money doing that, but he wasn't very smart with that money. He was one of those fools who would walk into a bar after payday and open his thick wallet in front of the ladies to buy them a drink and yes he got robbed one day after one of those times. He always was my favorite uncle though because he had 4 boys and no girls, and so he spoiled me rotten. I wonder if the Howling Dog Saloon was one of my uncles places to hang out. I can't ask him now though, he passed around 20 years ago.
I pipelined near home during breaks from college. And the last job that I was on, the regulars were getting ready to head out for the Alaskan Pipeline construction which was about ready to start. And they definitely are a different breed of cat! Your explanation of your uncle sounds like he would fit in well with the regulars on the last job that I was on. Great guys!
@@ronfullerton3162 He was. I was 17 years old when he told me that story while we were flying to my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary. I thought he was crazy then because he still carried around a big wad of cash in his wallet. I definitely chided him for that. That was in 1976
@@justnerdystuff The last time I pipelined, it was the summer after graduation from college. It was my last summer vacation in lots of ways. It was long hard days of work. But we had a great time while doing the job. This crew would take over this little country bar on every Thursday night. Luckily Fridays were our short day, and we would usually break off about three in the afternoon. After Thursday night's,that was about as far as many of them could make it through. Then there were all the crazy things that happened. Such as the morning two operators didn't show up for work. One we could get by without. But the other ran the boom Cat at the head of the firing line. The boss found them in the adjoining county jailhouse. We told them the day before how the neighboring county grew great watermelon. After getting drunk that evening, they decided to go buy some watermelon, but at midnight, all the melon stands were closed. So they decided to go pick their own. Mistake! They were both in horrible shape when the boss drove in with them about noon. As I said, fun memories. They tried to get me to go"North to Alaska" as the old Johnny Horton song title went. But I found a solid job before that pipeline job was done. And just stayed here in the lower 48!

My grandparents tried to go to Alaska back in late 60's or early 70's they were on the Al - Can highway lost 2 or 3 tires on the camper, then the axle on the camper went and Grandpa said " To heck with it the rate we're going the Bus (VW) will be next then where would we be. So they turned around 50 miles short of Alaska and came home. He said he didn't need to see Alaska that bad. But they did get to all 48 continuous states.
Had a friend who rode in on his motorcycle in the mid 90's. Ran out of innertubes and had to patch a few. Got bear scared and still talks about it to this day. Thanks for making this one John...hope you see a few critters.

Here in Anchorage. Been here since June 18,2018. I first lived on Eielson AFB. I went past Arctic circle one time , but have not ventured far past it. Did have run with a trucker who wanted to race.I did not want to trail him in that dust. I passed him safely. A lot of rain here this last week. It is a big challenge. I am anticipating the rest of your trip here.The video is great. Stay safe.

MLB and I are planning a trip to NW Kansas this fall and the only hotel in town is named "It'll do." Their advertising is "Not the Hilton, but it'll do."
Wise...man, very good. My friend said the fuel costs were terrible and the road got worse as you went north. They didn't take the road you were on, a different one. Drone work there would be amazing. Gotta mow. Be good, be safe !!
I have only seen this area through documentaries and other RUclipsrs. That is beautiful country with so much to see but it can be very dangerous. Some of the pump stations have lodging I believe-- mostly during the Winter months. Glad you put your sticker up among the others. 👍 Enjoying this series. I'm sorry everything is so expensive! Hey Coach. I noticed when you first started your trip that roadway seem to dip in many spots, even maybe buckle. I wonder how much of that is due to the seismic activity up that way. Also, the decking over that bridge over the Yukon seemed to be made of wood?? I wonder why that is. And wow, those shots of the scenery, spectacular. So beautiful. My goodness, dodging the potholes reminds of Indiana roads. 😆 I also noticed that there are airports up there in Coldwater and Wiseman. I wonder how often those are used. Great video, can't wait to see the next. Watch out for them bears!
I’m guessing the wood bridges are because of weather but I’m no expert on that. On the way back I stopped at the Coldfoot airport and they said it had a decent amount of use. Usually for tours.
@TravelwithaWiseguy we have taken a small plane to cold foot in 2018. Was an awesome experience. But we missed the highway. Our flight left from where you showed getting your rental car. Went to the truck stop in coldfoot and then toured Wiseman. Did you see Jack? A very knowledgeable and nice guy who I think lived there all his life. I would love to fly up there to see Auroras in March. Love the skinny trees up there.
Awesome video!!!! While growing up during the very late 1960s-early 1970s can remember the controversy concerning the building of the Alaska Pipeline. Also, have been to Alaska once - sort of. While in the Army 1992-1993, flew a military charter from St Louis to Oakland, CA. Then up to Anchorage. Lay over for about 10hours while aircraft was refueled. Sucked because could NOT even walk outside the airport terminal just to look around and get some fresh air. Then off to Tokyo and finally Kimpo airport in Seoul, South Korea. At least I can "say" I was in Alaska!! Looking forward to your continued safe journeys!!

@@ronfullerton3162 I looked up the temperature range Ron and in summer it can actually get warmer while it’s well below 0 in the winter. Summer can get to around 20°C during the day, which is warm.

Alaska is all about the dream of owning a cabin out in the middle of nowhere, building one or buying one. I wonder, and you probably don't know this, more of a rhetorical question, if you can actually buy one of those cabins in Livengood and fix it up and live out there like other people out in the wild like that

Please remember a few hundred of us drive this road for work, you guys might come here for fun but it's a very dangerous road with no facilities for hundreds of miles at a time, we truckers who drive it know every turn and dip Learn the road before you travel up it and don't come unprepared, bring a cb radio, even if it's a portable one, lots of people die and get hurt on this road it is lined with crosses and remains of wreckage and remember big trucks always have the right of way

In Coldfoot, you missed the truckers cafe where the drivers from Ice Road Truckers used to eat. I was hoping you'd stop there. I've heard how bad the road is, looks like they've improved it over the years.
Never scared except just worrying about the vehicle breaking down on the rough roads. I pulled the shades down so sleeping wasn’t much of an issue for me.
how far in advance did you have to book in Wiseman? How did you find out about places to stay along the road? like any other way or some special source for this?
@@TravelwithaWiseguy so normal ways. Wasn't sure if this was a unique enough place that you had to look up like an Alaska guide book or something. Wasn't sure if just "Google" or "Hotwire" or "Expedia" would have enough specificity for such a remote place. I wouldn't expect to see places to stay in Antarctica using those methods. Figured it would have to be booked either through a tour company, special guidebook, some other way
Probably those areas that are unimproved have a problem with the ground not being stable. Frost, erosion, sink area, or other problems would mean constant rebuilding. This way they can just regrade and try to establish a base with rock any time the earth moves.

Wise...man, very good. My friend said the fuel costs were terrible and the road got worse as you went north. They didn't take the road you were on, a different one. Drone work there would be amazing. Gotta mow. Be good, be safe !!

I have only seen this area through documentaries and other RUclipsrs. That is beautiful country with so much to see but it can be very dangerous. Some of the pump stations have lodging I believe-- mostly during the Winter months. Glad you put your sticker up among the others. 👍 Enjoying this series. I'm sorry everything is so expensive! Hey Coach. I noticed when you first started your trip that roadway seem to dip in many spots, even maybe buckle. I wonder how much of that is due to the seismic activity up that way. Also, the decking over that bridge over the Yukon seemed to be made of wood?? I wonder why that is. And wow, those shots of the scenery, spectacular. So beautiful. My goodness, dodging the potholes reminds of Indiana roads. 😆 I also noticed that there are airports up there in Coldwater and Wiseman. I wonder how often those are used. Great video, can't wait to see the next. Watch out for them bears!
I think the wavy roads are from frost heaves.

I’m guessing the wood bridges are because of weather but I’m no expert on that. On the way back I stopped at the Coldfoot airport and they said it had a decent amount of use. Usually for tours.
@TravelwithaWiseguy we have taken a small plane to cold foot in 2018. Was an awesome experience. But we missed the highway. Our flight left from where you showed getting your rental car. Went to the truck stop in coldfoot and then toured Wiseman. Did you see Jack? A very knowledgeable and nice guy who I think lived there all his life. I would love to fly up there to see Auroras in March. Love the skinny trees up there.
Awesome video!!!! While growing up during the very late 1960s-early 1970s can remember the controversy concerning the building of the Alaska Pipeline. Also, have been to Alaska once - sort of. While in the Army 1992-1993, flew a military charter from St Louis to Oakland, CA. Then up to Anchorage. Lay over for about 10hours while aircraft was refueled. Sucked because could NOT even walk outside the airport terminal just to look around and get some fresh air. Then off to Tokyo and finally Kimpo airport in Seoul, South Korea. At least I can "say" I was in Alaska!! Looking forward to your continued safe journeys!!

@@ronfullerton3162 I looked up the temperature range Ron and in summer it can actually get warmer while it’s well below 0 in the winter. Summer can get to around 20°C during the day, which is warm.

Alaska is all about the dream of owning a cabin out in the middle of nowhere, building one or buying one. I wonder, and you probably don't know this, more of a rhetorical question, if you can actually buy one of those cabins in Livengood and fix it up and live out there like other people out in the wild like that

Please remember a few hundred of us drive this road for work, you guys might come here for fun but it's a very dangerous road with no facilities for hundreds of miles at a time, we truckers who drive it know every turn and dip
Learn the road before you travel up it and don't come unprepared, bring a cb radio, even if it's a portable one, lots of people die and get hurt on this road it is lined with crosses and remains of wreckage and remember big trucks always have the right of way
Yep that’s why I read the part from the Milepost magazine about how dangerous it was. The only accident I saw was a big truck unfortunately.

Never scared except just worrying about the vehicle breaking down on the rough roads. I pulled the shades down so sleeping wasn’t much of an issue for me.

how far in advance did you have to book in Wiseman? How did you find out about places to stay along the road? like any other way or some special source for this?
A couple of weeks for all the hotels. Maybe a month. Can’t remember exactly. I just looked up places to stay online and found them.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy so normal ways. Wasn't sure if this was a unique enough place that you had to look up like an Alaska guide book or something. Wasn't sure if just "Google" or "Hotwire" or "Expedia" would have enough specificity for such a remote place. I wouldn't expect to see places to stay in Antarctica using those methods. Figured it would have to be booked either through a tour company, special guidebook, some other way

Probably those areas that are unimproved have a problem with the ground not being stable. Frost, erosion, sink area, or other problems would mean constant rebuilding. This way they can just regrade and try to establish a base with rock any time the earth moves.
Yeah, they’ve had problems with melting permafrost for the past several years in western and northern AK.

I had to reserve it ahead of time. I did about 2 weeks.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy OK, so this takes quite a bit of organizing then. You have to plan to drive on the Dalton Highway. You can't just say "I'm going to Alaska" go and on a whim say "hmm, I Have heard of this Dalton Highway. I think I'll do that. That sounds like fun"
