I don't go in for "best"/"Worst" comparisons but this is one of the most effective versions I ever heard. It stayed in my mind over fifty years, since the first time I heard it on his show and was blown away. Too many others have sung it as written and performed by Paul. Tom's was unique unto himself and powerful, emotional, and beautiful. Bravo!
Whatever the song, Mr. Jones finds the inner core and pulls the full measure of meaning from each word with his vocal expression. This song, sung by Tom, just breaks the heart.

I grew up listening to Tom Jones. I Remember when I was little every Saturday and Sunday my mom will put the albums and I would listen to them in the living room all day long and I got to know all the words to the songs. Those were the days I wish they never ended. Now Mom passed and I still listen to him. He's the greatest.
