that's got to be the cleanest engine compartment I've ever seen. Wish my Tacoma looked like that. I love your channel by the way. You've taught me a lot.
I love that you guys have these videos! Most of the folks on the T100 forum I'm on have the 3.4 V6, so it's nice to have some vids for the 2.7- thanks!
I, too, have the 3rz-fe engine in my '97 4runner. Today, as I was on my way bringing my kids to school, my engine began to idle rough. I went to the auto parts store and their obd II reader pulled up a p0300 and p0301. The lady there said I should have my spark plug(s) replaced and, maybe, my wires if the spark plug for number 1 cylinder doesn't fix the problem. Thanks for recording this DIY, sir. Schoos.
Just take it slow and easy, you might want to put anti-seize on the plugs. Also be sure not to drop the plugs into the holes, as it might mess up the gap of the plug.
redonKiLaus last Donnerstag (15th of Nov). I did use antiseize on the threads. I did follow your recommendations of using die elecetric grease on the plug wire in the two places you mentioned. I did not drop the plugs into the plug holes to ensure the gaps held their 0.031" distances. Danke, again, Herr Redonkilaus!
They do make spark plug sockets with rubber boots inside to hold the spark plugs to save you all the troubles, my tool kits all came with one or two (for the larger plugs) One important note though, for those who use large torque wrenches, be careful, because some (1/2 inch ones) are made with lowest torque settings of 28Nm, so if you try to set it at 18 or 20, it will not click and you will keep on tightening.. Big damage..
The torque wrench that I was using is made by Snap-On, and is set for a lower torque range than most 1/2in drive wrenches. I agree, some higher range wrenches will create a problem if you cannot set them to the right setting.
Denso and NGK spark plugs came pre-greased so first time install should be done dry like you did. They put this info on their websites. IMO, only need a little anti seize if spark plug is taken apart and reinstall.
hey, i have a 2004 hilux pickup with 3rz-fe engine and i confused because of the spark plug wires . in the repair manual they say 25 k ohm max . i wonder if you can measure that and make it clear especially a new ones. thanks for the useful great videos .
My truck is still using the original Sumitomo spark plug wires from 1997; they are still good. If you need to replace yours and can't get the Sumitomo wires (the Denso ones from the dealer are subpar), get the blue NGK wires.
I have a 97 4Runner I did the wrong size because someone changed the hood and said the wrong engine so I had issues with power loss at 0.044 so I looked in my book and checked the other size which is 3RZ-FE not 5VZ-FE and the factory rating is 0.031
antiseize prevents galvanic corrosion, which is more important than the torque on the plugs. If you have ever damaged or repaired the threads in a aluminum head, you'll always use antiseize when you install plugs (or anything) in aluminum bolt threads.
Interesting my three RZ looks nothing like this. I have individual coils on top of the cover, and you must first slip out a deep plastic bit before accessing the very submerged spark plug
You have one of the 01+ RZ engines, they switched to coil on plug. Interestingly earlier ones were also different and ran a distributor. Three different variants. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! I used to have a 1995 T-100 with the 3RZ and 5 speed manual. It was a great truck.
5/8 SPARK PLUG SOCKET, WRAPED AT EXTENTION WITH FOIL TAPE. GOOD VIDEO!
Stay tuned for more good stuff. We just decided, after multiple requests, to come up with an engine cleaning video.
Thanks for the tip. After we compression tested the engine, we put antiseize on the threads.
very cool. looking forward to it Klaus.

Bitte schön. Thanks for watching!
Or you can use a spark plug socket

redonKiLaus yep I noticed your snap-ons, they are one of the best, came with a big price tag though :D

Thanks for the information.
Love the intake pipe
Thanks, and thanks for watching!

I have a question, are the spark plugs NGK SILZKR7B11-9723 Laser Iridium good for this engine ?
I can't comment on whether that specific part number is correct for the engine, but the NGK Laser Iridium plugs are great plugs. Thanks for watching!

The Tacoma T100's also have the same engine types as 4Runners 3rd Gen

They just got to be way too tight. I tighten mine down by hand and smoke them up. Then I turned them about 1/4 to 1/2 turn lol
