  • Summer 2024's anime season brings with it an unexpected Anime of the Year candidate, and after watching three episodes, I just couldn't resist talking about it.
Gimai Seikatsu, or Days with My Stepsister, somehow isn't the first great Stepsister-based anime, but 'great' may end up being an understatement for this one. In the hopes more people come to appreciate the techniques it's employing, I give you this short, rushed video essay.
Psst, did you notice that the theme colors of the show changed from blue+pink/red to green+orange in episode 4? The OP and title cards are different! I hope as the two characters dye each others' lives, the colors used for this kind of text continue to change.

thanks for breaking this down, this anime is a masterpiece.
i've always thought that the art direction was especially astounding, despite the animation itself not being the greatest, this video made it even clearer as to why the cinematography itself so good.
definitely the hidden gem of this season, i wish more people had eyes on this anime.

Anime and movies can be appreciated in many ways; but manipulating cinematography so deftly and subtly is truly a work of art. Your analysis and the anime demonstrates that so much can be said without even telling it in dialogue to the viewers and how the cinematography can easily make up for the perceived 'shortcomings' in the anime's art quality.

In the light novel, the chapters go like this:
first we're shown the prespective of Yuuta, how his day goes by, what he does and stuff like that, and then the next chapter we get to see the same day, but from Saki's prespective. I'm pretty sure that the anime is trying to do this as well, but in a slightly different way, and it's by switching the characters prespective really subtly through out the episode.
Which is really damn cool, and i wouldnt have noticed this without this video, thanks for bringing this to light.

Oooh, I love stories that do that! Seeing the same events from different perspectives is always fun.
I definitely need to read the novels later.
