My mom got a perm in the 80s and with her already naturally curly hair, she came out with a literal Afro. I both hate and love that memory for complicated reasons.
Have naturally curly hair got regular perms AND dyed my hair. I couldnt afford a spiral wrap so i just had the largest perm rod set vertically. Worked out.
I loved the 80s…I remember going to the salon with my mom and seeing all the big hair…so much hair spray and perms…it was amazing…what a time!

I love how you take in the whole picture and not just the part you're "supposed" to look at. I do that when watching tv or movies and it drives my family nuts when I'm like: "did you see that guy in the background?!" And they're like, "no, why are you looking at that?" 😅

OMG I do that too! I was watching the Stranger Things Volume 4 finale, and the whole time Eddie was playing guitar on the roof, I just kept thinking, "Where did they plug in the f'ing amp?!" I lose all focus.
I just resonate with your 80's and 90's notes! Any time you talk figure skating, sister act, land before time, etc... You speak to my soul lol. Love it. Thank you for keeping things alive!
There's still a part of me that will always envy the perm + teased look. Pretty pumped that I finally figured out how to use a diffuser and bring out my natural curls and volume instead. VOILA - instant 80s groupie hair. 🤘

Honey the summer 1984 Olympic torch went RIGHT BY MY HOUSE on its way to LA and I will never forget how exciting that was!!! And my hair was so cute in 84… curly short bob with a long rat-tail coming from behind my right ear that I’d braid ribbons into like a single little Boy George moment. And then we moved to a tiny town in Texas and I was like SUCH A WEIRDO FREAK. 🤣

I lived in Dallas during the 80s and Texas hair is already big. So Texas gals had some big-big 80's hair. I loved it. Tons of super freeze hairspray is needed. 💖💖

I was a hairdresser back then. 80s hair was so much fun to do.
I am an ‘81 baby. I went through it all: curled and teased bangs, side ponytail, crimped hair…lord have mercy. Also, I have dated a handful of boys with mullets or rat tails. The 80’s were such a weird and confusing time for makeup and fashion. Hahaha Thanks for the flashback, you beautiful ray of sunshine, you. 💛💛💛💛🌞✨

Basically Inserting your hair into a little griddle and cooking it into a teeny jagged zig-zag texture that will surely cause horrendous damage if done multiple times 😂

Yes! Such a fun trip down memory lane. I was a kid in the 80s and rocked naturally curly hair, which I was embarrassed about at the time. I’m currently growing out a pixie cut so I can try to get back those curls and volume!

I'm still not completely over the hair trauma I experienced in the 80s...I went into a Bradlee's (are those still a thing?) "salon" to get my first independent haircut all by myself as a child (10). I walked in, knew exactly what I wanted and proudly entered with money +tip in hand. I asked for a bob.
"I know JUST what you want!" the stylist was so excited and smoked while cutting my hair. He turned me around for the reveal and it was a legit mullet! (And it was not by choice)
I have stick straight hair. My mom thought a home perm would fix it and make me look more "feminine." Let's just say my cullet (curly mullet), didn't do the trick.
One of my earliest bad hair memories, and still takes me a minute to build stylist trust. And in retrospect, also one of my earliest memories of my parents trying to "fix" my butchness with femininity.
Unless it's ironic or a bold fashion choice, mullets and perms can stay in the 80s. 😆
(Please don't criticize on child neglect and tobacco habits of the day, I understand, it was a "different time" back then, and now I too feel older than Carrie Bradshaw.)

I know 80’s fashion and hair gets hated on a lot, but I love how creative and excessive that decade was. I’m tired of seeing bone straight hair for the last 2 decades. I love all the intricate layers/textures, partings, perms, asymmetrical styles, and bangs the 80s had. Also I love how androgynous specifically mens hair was. I feel like long hair for men in the 80’s was embraced a lot more than todays’ times.

I feel so old!! I graduated high school in 1987. 🤦🏼♀️ We did have some hair. It was kinda the good, the bad and the ugly 😆 the hair styles went a long with our music. We had the punk, big hair metal bands and the rock a billy country bands. Oh and the women of music like Cher, Madonna, Dolly and Tina.

my mom has worked at a salon since I was in kindergarten and the first time I walked in there someone was getting a perm - I can still remember the smell 30+ years later

So glad you asked! What can I do with my waist long straight hair? I've been taking good care of my hair for so long to grow it out but I know nothing about how to style it. Are there any fun styles I can do that still show some of my length?

I also think Tina Turner could still rock her 80’s look. What I love about the 80’s is that there wasn’t a mono look for the decade. Rob Halford of Judas Priest could also resurrect his 80’s garb and still look modern. Fun video👍

i was born in 82 and i literally begged my mom to get a perm. but, my hair was super straight then and became naturally wavy in my mid 20’s. who knew?! i love you JVN 🥰♥️

80s hair was freedom! I was in my teens in the 80s and pop culture was fun, not politics or economics that were terrible and confusing. The 80s are so iconic, they have a life of their own. It's a decade that hasn't been easy to replicate, because it was in the moment. Love the 80s!!!
I tried watching Andy Warhol TV but my mom caught me and forbid it. I was little but Warhol put the 80’s in my mind like no other. Love 80’s subculture 4-ever.

I looooooooove big fluffy 80's hair, but it's kinda hard to obtain without damaging your hair 😩
So I'm a mental health therapist with not a lot of time in the morning. I'll admit the top knot is my go to. Is this so very wrong? My stylist always keeps my color and hair gorgeous, but keeping it out of my face has become so comfortable!
As a 77 baby I dealt with to many 80s cuts to be traumatized from ever wanting to see them again. had a mullet for sure and also the whole short haircut with a long string of hair in the back like if you had a ponytail that when super thin. Mohawk yes done that too

Yikes! One spiral perm and i was.like Never Again!.and Frosted hair suckef too esp. When paired w/acid washed jean jackets! Grrr! But the whale spout & baby back ribs were Totally IN! LoLol

When I wanted to color my hair way back when my hair stylist had an intervention with me. She said ok if you want to color your hair that's fine but you will kill your hair if you prrm too, so I had to decide. Color won and I have made peace with my straight hair. Lol
