My company requests that you put your pronouns in your email signature but I like the idea of putting it on your name tag as well (based on preference, not necessarily mandatory)
Queer Eye is one of the only pieces of media that will make me feel genuine joy no matter how depressed I am. It’s so touching the work that this group does, it truly does make a difference for many of us.
@kshamwhizzle I totally agree. And I absolutely recognize and understand how important gender and gender expression is to some people. I know that gender is something that has helped a lot of people find their own identities, but I wish that there wasn’t such a confined gender sphere to fit into the mold of. Gender roles have deeply hurt the society we live in for so long and I personally wish that people could look past gender as a form of identify and just see people as they are!
Yes! I feel like Bobby doesn't get as much screen time as the other guys or doesn't have as many emotional conversations with the participants, so it's harder to know what he's like. This video made me like him more 🥰
They’re a great example of a group of friends (or even just people) who don’t necessarily agree in every subject, but don’t try to push their opinions and still highly respect each other 💕
My thoughts on labels: Label yourself if it is helpful to you. If it’s not helpful to you, don’t bother. Don’t feel pressure from society to label yourself. I adopt some labels, such as trans and queer, but I don’t get very specific because that’s not important to me. If it is for someone else, great. If not, totally okay. Labels are to help you, not help others explain you or put you into a box. Do whatever you want.
I'm cis and I don't like the trend where everybody 'needs' to specify their pronouns, I feel that, ironically, this is so stigmatizing and putting people in boxes. I have an obviously female name, so it's obvious I identify as female (assuming I'm not ''in the closet'', if we can use that expression for gender identity). I mean, if I identified as male, I would change my name to an unambiguously male one, and if I was agender/genderfluid, I'd deliberately pick an 'ambiguous' name AND I would specify my "they/them" pronouns. Also for other people with ambiguous names (whether they are cis or trans or other), it makes sense to specify pronouns. But otherwise I just wouldn't do it, because I feel like I would be saying to everybody "Hey, my name is X AND BY THE WAY I AM FEMALE EVERBODYYYYYYY! Not that I want this to matter right now but anyway, just thought I'd mention" 😂 (Similar to stating every time to everybody that you're straight, that you adhere to a certain religion, to a certain political party, etc. etc.)
@@soybean3423 Some people may have names you consider feminine but not use she/her pronouns. Also, if only people with ambiguous names said their pronouns then it would make them feel other and affect many non-binary people who do choose to have gender-neutral names. Not all non-binary people pick gender-neutral names. Not all trans women pick feminine names. Not all trans men would pick obviously male names. I didn’t! Whether you’re cis or trans, you cannot tell someone’s pronouns by looking at them or by their name. There’s nothing wrong with having a stereotypically gendered name as a non-binary person. If they’re okay with it, they’re okay with it. Same for trans men or women. Normalizing it helps stop stereotyping, othering of trans* people, and make sure people are respected. We refer to people with names and introduce ourselves that why, so why not pronouns? It’s quick and easy. I don’t really see how pronouns are stigmatizing. I also don’t see that’s it’s weird to introduce them. You introduce yourself with your name so people can refer to you. Same with pronouns. Saying your religion or political party, like you said as examples, in every introduction doesn’t matter because people aren’t going to be referring to you as that.
This is exactly my mindset on labels, also the reason I don’t care if the label someone chooses doesn’t fit the standard definition, if the label makes a person feel seen, that’s all that matters!
@@Birdkiller46 Exactly! I am a cis woman with a very feminine name, but I still put pronouns in my bio, we need to normalize pronouns in order to help trans and non-binary individuals. It’s such a small thing on the part of one person, but when many people do it, it adds up to help a whole community of people. Most of my friends are LGBTQ+, I am ace demipanromantic myself, and many of my friends are trans and/or non-binary so if I can help them by doing this insanely small thing, then I think I should.
I know jvn is non binary but I agree with the others. I don’t have my pronouns anywhere because I don’t know what they are and I’m not ready for the world to see that they are not the ones they expect out of me
as a non-binary person, I wish you the best of luck in your journey 💘 it took me a couple years to figure out how I prefer to be addressed and I know you can get there
i agree. i definitely understand jvn’s point of view on the matter and i think that pronouns are important but there are some people who just arent ready.
It can be truly terrifying to dismantle social constructs that have developed over thousands of years. But this is why we're such a fascinating species because we are self-aware about how our actions contribute to social evolution! FYI, I advocate for declaring pronouns if you feel safe enough to do so. Discovering one's pronouns isn't a binary issue and can be a spectrum of introspection.
The whole "se people just aren't ready" doesn't sit well with me. I respect anyones choice to assign their own pronouns, but just because I don't want to, doesn't mean I'm "not ready". It forces me to choose something when I don't identify myself like that or by pronouns. So ooof course I'd never be annoyed at someone no matter what pronouns they used for me, but just because I don't see gender or my pronouns as a part of myself I want to define, doesn't mean I'm somewhere on a journey with it and need to work it out. I am fine as just being me. I'm not still working it out or uncomfortable and it's condescending to imply so.
Them being nonbinary doesn’t make them the definitive voice for all enby people. And, frankly, as a white and financially secure person he’s got a lot of privilege to hold that stance.
bobby’s story about the taxi driver really hits home cause this show finally exposed my VERY christian grandma to the queer community, and it finally helped her accept my community, which was something i never imagined would happen. this show is so amazing
I’m okay with online too but all my attempts have ended negatively. Finding people and groups is hard, even online. Almost feels like I need to go to some specific sort of casting call or something
I think Johnathans job actually is pretty hard. Hair is an emotional thing. Your not just giving someone new hair. You are changing something about them that they have a deeply emotional connection to.
I'm really happy that they did more genuine spectrum questions by the end. I enjoyed the fun stuff at the beginning but the conversations were the best
I feel like 'demanding' people to put pronouns on name tags as a given rule would be quite dangerous to trans people or gender-nonconforming people who are not out yet or not out in all of their life. Imagine getting a new job in a very prejudiced part of the world, for example, choosing to not come out as a way of protecting yourself, and then being faced to choose your pronouns for their nametag? Imagine kids who haven't come out to their parents yet but maybe their classmates getting their real pronouns 'leaked' in school documents? I don't know.
i know right, in that situation they might just lie about their pronouns and then have to get it changed later when they're ready (or if they're ever ready)
I guess you could change it though... But I think Jonathan expressed feelings about pronouns in an ideal world where everyone could be themselves from the get go rather than doing it today in our current world.
yeah i really hated how JVN couldn’t grasp that not everyone is privileged enough to not have to be closeted or questioning. it was so frustrated how he bascially suggested that closeted people out themselves or misgender themselves to appease his desire for ‘equality’
I think everyone really misunderstood Jonathans point, I felt they meant if we all knew about current open pronouns from birth, then when I was growing up I can understand and get to know what mine are, I wouldn't be fearful of some new label because it would be normal. It's like way back when we all picked out first email addresses or usernames terrified of who might see them or what they might say about us when in reality they are as changeable as our minds, as the weather, as our moods, they are almost time stamps of what felt important to me at that time, who I felt I was, I don't really see any difference! I felt what was said was to suggest that perhaps pronouns, given time, could be as normal as anything else, who said anything was set in stone!
I think Jonathan assumed in a world where everyone is already cool with pronouns and stuff. Like I think it's obviously that one shouldn't out themselves if it's not save.
the exact moment i actually fully accepted i was gay was when i watched an episode of queer eye where they transformed the gay pastor. they truly changed my life and helped me accept myself and couldn’t be more thankful

I just love how all of them vibe together for real! I'm not even queer, merely an ally, but watching the show and seeing people today discuss things more openly and get interested in Queer Eye makes me so happy. My partner has a term for things that make us happy and fuzzy inside, it's "a warm, cozy blaket". So there you have it: Queer Eye is a warm cozy blanket of a show, and I'm always touched by it and the guys, and leave an episode feeling comforted.
YOU ARE CHANGING THE WORLD!!! you have educated me on so many things I never would have been exposed to. I love the show. keep up all the great work :)
As a trans person I really like what they were saying about pronouns!! I’m from the south and there are kinda a lot of layers as to why it can be scary. I don’t think it’s fair to force trans people into essentially outing themselves when they’re not ready and it can also be very dangerous… just because something becomes “socially acceptable” in media doesn’t mean that there aren’t places where it’s still very different. I definitely think letting people know your pronouns is important and it needs to be normalized but that energy really needs to be directed at cis people. If it was standard practice with EVERYONE, not just trans people, then hell yeah! But we’re not there yet :/ I definitely get what Jonathan’s saying but, in my experience living in a little town in East Tennessee, misgendering only gets worse when I wear my pronoun pin. It takes away any chance I had at passing as cis and just gets more anger directed towards me in public so … I know it may be different in, you know, New York or LA, but people should keep in mind that the majority of us don’t have the luxury of being able to be ourselves without fear yet. And there are people who have to be closeted that would have to misgender themselves and ,,, yeah it’s a whoooole multi layered issue but I really appreciated tan and antoni and Bobby’s thoughts about it because I think it’s so often portrayed as a black and white issue when it’s not. Also antoni I’m free this weekend just so you know
I'm from India, and here things like sexuality and gender are just not known. I doubt people even in the "modern cities" know about the LGBTQ+ community. So of course having my pronouns on a "label" is scary to me. Even just having she/her as a label would make people raise eyebrows at me and ask me why I feel the need to reiterate that. I can't even imagine including they/them as of yet. We are millions of years away from acceptance here and a lot of times, I see westerners not being able to grasp just how difficult lives are for us out here.
I hope you get a chance to visit middle TN, especially Nashville. It’s a break from most of TN’s homophobia and transphobia, and you deserve to feel welcome where you are :) plenty of LGBTQ representation and public support from small businesses and general public, especially in east Nashville and green hills. TN is a very, very disappointing place politically (especially right now with the book banning), but Nashville can occasionally be a breath of fresh air, and you deserve that break :)
I'm so happy to see the fab 5 answering questions like this I've never seen them in anything outside of the show and its so nice to see them just being real like this especially on a channel I already watch
This video just made my day (like any episode of the show does)!! Absolutely love them and what they have done to change people's lives. LOOOOVE Tan and Antoni they have the cutest cuddly friendship EVER. SOOO looking forward to watching the season in Germany!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This show heals my heart. When I am having a hard time, I start watching them work their magic. I think a lot about what JVN said about how do we really always have to be the bigger person and he said you know what I think we do. I think about that a lot when I am in difficult situations where I don’t want to alienate myself from the person but still have convictions where the basis is human rights and bodily autonomy.
When it comes to pronouns, I don't think tags are always the best/safest option for many people. If trans and non-binary folks, for example, have to display their pronouns, they might be risking their safety or if they choose to remain safe, experience dysphoria
very true and I also think that it is not necessary to have everyone displaying their pronouns since around 99.8% of the population lives within the binary of either he/him and she/her so most of the time you can safely assume someone's pronouns just by looking at them, because there's a 99.8% chance you're right. In the 0.2% of cases when you're wrong they can let you know that they go by they/them.
@@allenp9173 That's very true, and in fact many trans people actually prefer to have people guess their pronouns by how they look, since that's the whole point of trying to pass, is to not have to have your identity come into question every time you pass someone on the street. (The whole "don't assume my gender" thing is made up). Of course there are also trans people who feel very differently about it, but the important thing is that IF someone shares their pronouns or corrects people on them, they should always be respected.
Queer Eye is my comfort show, my safe space. Every time i feel the world is falling apart and my faith in humanity is getting lost, these 5 amazing people just make me think that maybe there is still hope. They make me so happy, i love them so much

Everyone has pronouns. However, making pronouns mandatory at work or social functions is dangerous. That is demanding someone to out themselves and discounts potential dangers a person could face from others in their workplace and/or home life.
I didn't realize I could love these people any more than I already do but.. With the labels... I was really happy about that question and the conversation they had. Personally I believe very strongly (my personnel opinion, I'm in no way trying to force this opinion on anyone else
I really enjoyed this episode as you showed their discussion on topics much more than other episodes, I would prefer a longer episode with more discussion than a short one where we don't hear everyone's views! But a great episode and the fab 5 are incredible!
The part i enjoy the most is seeing open emotional maturity from the fab 5. Its never been shown inside of this narrative with the chance to show such a vast audience. Crying is ok, talking about trauma is ok, understanding you need more cultural education and expressing it. I just really can't see the down point to the work they do and JVN showing flamboyance can be accepted and his podcast showing his constant want to be educated is just a marvel. I appreciate these people so much!
I love QE’s conversations and the safe space they create. I also love that they advocate that growth is a life long process that can only start when the person is ready.
Even though I side more with the other guys’ opinion, I gotta respect someone who is willing to stand alone and firm in their place. Not a lot of people can remain true to their opinion alone against multiple opponents, I gotta respect them for that 👏🏻
I don’t respect that they thought most other non-binary people would be able to relate to them I’m nb and HEAVILY more in favor of the other guys’ opinions.
You guys are changing the world for sure. The people you work with, and the people who see your work are all learning and growing. You cannot overstate how valuable that is. People on your show have even said it. “I never thought I would meet or get along with gay people. I never knew anyone like you before”. That is HUGE. I love you all and everything you do for humanity. You bridge the gaps. You represent the best of the LGBTQ community and seek to help ALL people.
I'm so proud that they can have a conversation without any insults or shouting and they respect each other's opinions. The conversations really made you see where they are coming from. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
For the “gender isn’t important” question, they all somewhat agreed even though they went to strongly disagree. It’s all circumstantial, because gender does matter to trans people & in terms of sexual attraction in one’s orientation gender matters. It’s the societal gender norms they disagree with. Gender still matters but its importance has been inflated and too binary in society.

They are so funny together. I’m glad they have a bond besides being members of a show.
I love how Antoni is just holding onto his emotional support Tan this whole video

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT TAN I CAN'T
Bobby is truly the unsung hero of Queer Eye. I adore him
I feel like its taken a while for him to come out of his shell, but he's finally showing the world what a gem he is. Love him
Hes not cause we all love him❤
I love how they love each other and respect one another and can have different opinions and view points
When they talked about the pronouns on name tags, my mind jumped to "If I had had to put my pronouns on my name tag, I would have either outed myself to my parents or had to give the wrong pronouns."
yeah, i think as long as its safe for the person in the environment, displaying pronouns can be useful. but safety is super super important
exactly
Exactly! The fact that Jonathan OF ALL PEOPLE didn’t understand that was mind blowing to me
My company requests that you put your pronouns in your email signature but I like the idea of putting it on your name tag as well (based on preference, not necessarily mandatory)
Exactly. I think they should be encouraged but not required for this very reason
tan screaming that antoni was in love with him for two seasons made me CACKLE 😭
Bobby throwing up those two middle fingers was EVERYTHING.

I love Bobby’s viewpoint on life and on all of these topics, he is so insightful!
He’s so smart
@kshamwhizzle I totally agree. And I absolutely recognize and understand how important gender and gender expression is to some people. I know that gender is something that has helped a lot of people find their own identities, but I wish that there wasn’t such a confined gender sphere to fit into the mold of. Gender roles have deeply hurt the society we live in for so long and I personally wish that people could look past gender as a form of identify and just see people as they are!
I agree! Is he the oldest?
@kshamwhizzle right i could totally relate to that
Yes! I feel like Bobby doesn't get as much screen time as the other guys or doesn't have as many emotional conversations with the participants, so it's harder to know what he's like. This video made me like him more 🥰
Bobby is so well spoken and intelligent, I cried when he cried 😢. Like I do every queer eye episode (happy tears obviously)
They’re a great example of a group of friends (or even just people) who don’t necessarily agree in every subject, but don’t try to push their opinions and still highly respect each other 💕
I love the fab 5!! So happy you guys made this video! So sad Karamo isn’t there.

Ty. I rly needed to hear this🥺🤧
I'm cis and I don't like the trend where everybody 'needs' to specify their pronouns, I feel that, ironically, this is so stigmatizing and putting people in boxes. Not that I want this to matter right now but anyway, just thought I'd mention" 😂
(Similar to stating every time to everybody that you're straight, that you adhere to a certain religion, to a certain political party, etc.
Love how Antoni got to open up about his struggles with social anxiety and sexuality

I have always thought that Bobby's part must take so much more work and planning than the others, even though he probably has a design team behind him
I love that they were able to have these open nuanced conversations about gender. This is the kind of supportive convos we need more of in media
The hug that Antoni and Tan do is just so cute- I- I can't- I wish that I had such support like that-
the exact moment i actually fully accepted i was gay was when i watched an episode of queer eye where they transformed the gay pastor. they truly changed my life and helped me accept myself and couldn’t be more thankful

it's honestly so endearing to see antoni and tan drawn to each other like magnets whenever they were in the same line, it was so sweet 🥺

@@allenp9173 how old are you?
thats how i felt too
@@allenp9173 That's very true, and in fact many trans people actually prefer to have people guess their pronouns by how they look, since that's the whole point of trying to pass, is to not have to have your identity come into question every time you pass someone on the street. (The whole "don't assume my gender" thing is made up). Of course there are also trans people who feel very differently about it, but the important thing is that IF someone shares their pronouns or corrects people on them, they should always be respected.

Everyone has pronouns. However, making pronouns mandatory at work or social functions is dangerous. That is demanding someone to out themselves and discounts potential dangers a person could face from others in their workplace and/or home life.
I love how they all disagreed so respectfully ❤

For the “gender isn’t important” question, they all somewhat agreed even though they went to strongly disagree. It’s all circumstantial, because gender does matter to trans people & in terms of sexual attraction in one’s orientation gender matters. It’s the societal gender norms they disagree with. Gender still matters but its importance has been inflated and too binary in society.
Exactly. It matters a lot, but way less than the weight that culture currently puts on it.
