I grow evening primrose as a trap crop for japanese beetles. This is something I started by happenstance when a wild primrose chanced into my garden. I left it be and by the end of the season the beetles would flock to it, ignoring my okra and much of anything else they'd normally like to eat. Good luck in the garden, you rock!
Nature never ceases to amaze. These plants are so very similar to Cannabis. The tops(flowers) also get a very strong Cannabis like smell. They grow quite tall too. I was so confused when I first encountered this plant. Go Cleome’s! 🌱💚
I have grown Cleome a couple of years and they were so easy. They love the heat and don't need any staking. So pretty. I never had any trouble with them having a bad smell. I highly recommend them.
I've recently grown this cultivar thinking it was something else. I remember this being in my MILs garden so having it our garden is a nice reminder of her since she's passed ❤️. Having planted 12 and only getting one it is indeed hard to germinate. The one that did pop was particularly finicky and didn't really respond to anything in my indoor CFL light set up for starting plants come April indoors. I tried domes, no domes, closer/further from light and with little to no hope I brought it out to my mini green house I recently built. It was 4-5 weeks old and very pale looking.... Within 48hrs it popped into life looking green and healthier.... Nothing different other than first week of May weather in 6b zone. It continued to improve and up pot etc accordingly and I have my first one in my front garden. With these tips in positive I'll be better able to germinate and fill my own gardens with memories. Thank you for the informative video.
I saw the giant hawk moth at night working the plants. My plants died off for over four years. We were building a new deck and scuffed the soil up and plants popped up after four years.
These flowers are always super easy to grow just throw the seeds down don't even really have to mess with them and they'll pop up I even come back the next year and I live in Northeast Ohio they make hundreds of little teeny tiny seeds
Mine died and four years later we were building a deck and we disturbed the ground then five new plants popped up. Never saw anything like it unless the seed lie dormant until the dirt is disturbed.
This video was exactly what I was looking for! I am growing cleome for the first time this year, but I bought the plants for $5 each. The amount I spend on annuals every year is getting outrageous, but I haven’t wanted to invest in grow lights. I subscribed to your channel as soon as I watched the video, and I plan on watching your “winter sowing cleome” later this evening. Thanks so much!
It's called Rocky Mountain Bee Plant... In NM the natives call it wild spinach... It's eaten and used to make an ingredient in black paint for making traditional pottery in the old way...
I love them! I even like the aroma. It's a cross between skunk and cardamom. And they do seem to have some kind of pickers, too. Definitely a flower for only the truest of aficionados!
Your videos are SUCH a great reference. I'm in Atlanta so our climate isn't identical (close enough) but hearing what flowers are easy/hard to grow is 5/5 useful
Here where i live cleomes are introduced weeds and sort of aggresive growers and road sides and fields are covered purple, pink and white all through summer...
I grew cleome for years and never noticed then being a sticky or having thorns. I’ll definitely do a closer inspection this year! Lol I saw your comment that you grow Malabar spinach vines. I had never heard of them. Very interesting and I think I’ll try some myself.
I started mine just this month lol. Just outside in a pot but I have had pretty good germination. They are all about 2 inches tall now and I’ll be transplanting shortly as they do have their first real leaves now. I’m excited to see these grow.
Thank you for another informative video. Love your channel. Your channel and Garden Answer two of my favorite garden channels. I've never grown cleome; I have to try some next season. From up here in New Hampsha; you go girl.
So I ordered a package of Rocky Mountain bee plant and found out it kind of likes poor crappy soil etc so I gave them to my mom. I was looking at pictures and thought how familiar they looked and then I saw the name Spider plant…. 😑 what a moment these were flowers my mother grew all the time growing up. The name was the only thing that threw me off.
It would be helpful if you'd list some of the other flowers growing in your videos. This combination is really pretty - curious which color zinnia, etc. (I'm not good at deciding whether it's pink, or lilac, or whatever). Thanks! It's nice to see how your channel has grown : )
I was given this plant last year. It smells like Marijuana. It goes well with my early spring time bulb of Crown Imperial which smells like skunk. I tend to smell up my neighbourhood.
Which growing zone are you in? We just moved to Zone 4b and found the front planter bed filled with beautiful, blooming Cleomes. I collected about a cup of seed from the pods in about 20 minutes! I'd prefer to sow them after our last frost but how best to store them until then? I understand that these flowers reseed well. thanks!
Hello! You most likely wont see this from how old this video is but, OMGGG I wanna grow these!! I like to grow flowers from seed, to flower, to seed! I remember this flower so much and, So badl wanna grow it haha. I do have a question! Do they grow theyir flowers in the first eyar?? What I mean is, they sprout, grow leaves and upwards and everything, and then their flowers?? I know some plants like to grow their roots out more to store food, and then the next years they start making flowers. So is Cleome a flower that grows flowers in the first year??
@@lindajoseph1684 I live in SW Florida. I am cold stratifying my seeds for about 6 weeks, then I will plant. I hope this works. I had beautiful Cleome while living in Massachusetts. Good luck!
I’ve never seen cleome before and when you showed us the growing foliage I was like “what a minute am I on the right video?” Haha. Although it’s not related how much cold can poppies tolerate as I’m thinking of growing some Icelandic and Shirley poppies for the first time. I live in zone 7 and I’m winter sowing so I’m wondering if I could grow them without a hoop house or frost blanket.
If you're planting in the fall, I would definitely direct sow. Ive never grown icelandic poppies outside of the hoophouse, so I'm not sure how much cold they can really take. However, I have had shirley poppies overwinter without any cover. I sometimes lose them if its really cold though, so may a frost blanket would help to make sure that they plants survive. Good luck!
That's an awful lot of fussing for cleomes! In CT they reseed very well and 'out of bounds' volunteers can be moved back into the garden. Once you have them, they will keep reseeding - no need to fuss like this!
When the seed pods are fully dried (but haven't yet opened on their own) you can hold a can under them and slide your thumb and forefinger down the pod and it will release many seeds into the can. Or, as I said above - just let them reseed on their own.
Well produced video…you spent the time informing the viewer w no wasted intro, etc…I just subscribed… I want to see what you’ve done with “cold tunnels(?)”
Do you use capillary mats in your trays? Really enjoy your series. Do you use hot water to seal the ends of your flowers when you make bouquets? I watch Sarah Raven videos too and she always do that but they’re old so I wasn’t sure if it needs to be done. Thanks
I dont use any mats, I just water with a fine mist nozzle on the hose. I do put some flowers, like dahlias, in hot water. I think it really just depends on the type of flower.
It's now the end of October in North Carolina (Zone 4), and my beautiful cleomes are near the end of their life. Do I just pull them up by the roots? That seems brutal.
Thank you so much. Does your tunnel mean they don't need light for germination? I have a green house... so I can do that... but I'm a bit late on it already being April. This is a very interesting video.
Even though the plastic isn't transparent, they still get plenty of light. I definitely dont think it's too late to plant. I've even had some success with direct sowing them. Good luck!
Some of the seeds that I saved from last years purple cleome are taupe, some are gray, most of them are black. What does the non black seeds indicate immature seeds? Or different color flowers?
Im trying to grow it in pots but i dont know how much space a single plant actually needs. Also found seedlings quite "sensitive". Diffucult to grow inside
Last year I only had a few per pot even though I used a good numberof seeds. The fewer, the bigger. This year I have a bunch per pot unexpectedly, but they are thriving and growing. You might want to use more seeds than you think you need, then thin them out to your preference.
