    Hi Gary! Some of these annuals are considered cool hardy and in our zone (7b) we can start them in the Fall or early spring (6-8 weeks before the last frost). That's how the cut flower farms do Larkspur, Snapdragons, sweat peas, and a bunch others. Lisa Mason Ziegler (The Gardeners Workshop on youtube) has popularized this method. It's pretty interesting and you get more bloom time on some of your flowers.

    Hi Gary, this is my first year growing any seeds inside. I watched this video twice and I guess I’m a little dim to have picked up how you determine when to start any particular flower indoors. You have written germination time - I certainly get that - and you have bloom time - I get that as well. How one connects the 4 and even 6 to 8 weeks you have written on the bottom is what I’m confused about. Can you please clear that up for me as I’m right now in my planning stage for starting the flowers. Thanks. You have a tremendous amount of videos to watch and I appreciate that.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 года назад

      Congrats on starting indoors. So your timing it so you get them into the ground, when the ground is about 50 degrees, that is warmer nights, some warm rains. However, 4 weeks to 8 weeks really depends on how much room you have to keep them indoors. It is confusing and the best way to do it, is taking notes and experimenting. Sorry I cant be more specific. I started Shasta Daisies and Purple Cone flower Jan 1. They can be kept indoors and get beat up indoors. I started my other flowers 7 days ago with goal of 6-8 weeks indoors.

    So you take the number of days to bloom and kinda divide it in half, then add the days till germination= the number of days you count back from last frost date? Am I understanding correctly??

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад

      That works. No frost first. Early bloomers need less time indoors growing and adding length of time to germinate. Some varieties are just fast growers indoors. I have grown these before so sort of have the times down.

    Hi Gary, in watching this video and you plant these annual in seed starting mix, you don’t then have to plant them up into another container and soil before going outdoors? You just plant them directly into the soil outdoors? Thank you for such great explanation.

      I most cases I do. If the temps outdoors are warmer, I put them in the ground or containers. Sometimes I pot them up to let them grow longer.

      Why don’t you buy the seeds and read the back of the package. Get a sharpie pen and write the germination time and bloom time on the front of the package. Look up your last frost date for your area. Add germination time to bloom time and count this amount back from your last frost date to know when to start them. I am dismayed at your lack of enthusiasm for doing for yourself. Are you suffering from a major depression?

    Thanks for your videos Gary! I need some advice: I ordered a few seeds that specifically say that direct-sow isn’t recommended. They instruct you start a few weeks before last frost. The thing is, I’m in zone 9b, and my last frost date was February 13. So since it’s PAST my last frost date, can I still start them indoors & transplant once they’re bigger? Or do I need to wait till next year & start them in January? I don’t want to waste a bunch of seeds. They’re all annuals by the way. I’m trying to start a cut flower garden.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад +1

      No no, you can still start them. With those temps, start them in flats but keep them outside. Bring them in at night if its cold. I like doing them in flats as they do better. Now you can put seeds directly outside too. Sometimes harsh rains and such can take a toll on new seedling in the ground. Transplants are a bit tougher. But you can start now how you wish.

      Oh that is tough because it depends on the outdoor temps. You will only find a general range online.

    If they are so fast growing, why do you start indoors rather than direct sowing?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад

      Outdoors can be unpredictable. A transplant is solid and sturdy. You could plant a 1000 seeds outdoors. Get a crazy rain and wash some out. Or they sprout a bit and a light frost comes in. A combination of both is probably great way to go.

    I am now confused. When I go to the nursery and buy my flowers, they are already blooming. For example, I buy a flat of Marigolds in full bloom and transplant them in my gardens. But I am not to allow them to bloom when I start them inside?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 года назад

      In these tiny cells you get tiny bloom plants. Sometimes nursery plants are in bigger cells. But marigolds are an exception to the rule. Its more of a guideline.

    Do your times include a week or so for hardening off?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад +2

      So it can. Ill talk more about it in the next video. I actually start hardening my plants off in the flats as soon as the pop up. I give them a little sun a couple times a week. If I dont do that. towards the last week indoors, I am moving them in and out. I also have popped a plastic cup over them that isnt fully clear. I plant them put on cup them for 7 days.

    can you just spread the seeds outside in good soil and let them germinate once its warm instead of starting inside?

    • @verawallace9055
      @verawallace9055 4 года назад +1

      You could too ,but I read somewhere where they said it's best to do it in a small pot, then transfer to Soil as to protect the roots

    • @cynthiafisher9907

      Jeremy MacCarthy You could, but they would probably compete with each other for water and nutrients and not grow as well.

    GREAT video. 👍 I have learned so much from watching your videos over the past few years, and am SO grateful for the time and effort you take in producing these videos.
    QUESTION: does it make a difference how close you keep your grow lights to the top of the seed starts if your lights are LED or fluorescent? I have a combination of both. I thought I remembered you saying something about that once.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад

      The higher the lumens the higher they can be. But generally stay around 3 inches for germination and 10-14 days after that. When larger you can go to 6 inches or so. Same distance for both types if they are close in lumens.
