When we're traveling around you see acres of brown field sites laying empty, build on these, and put up with the cost of clearing them, and not productive farm land. How can it be right that some farmers can put acres down to growing TREES ,as a local chap here has done , just for the subsidy, and don't get me on to solar farms with their total waste of good farmland that should be used for edible crops. Let's hope DEFRA and the whole Government in fact, actually take notice of this wake up call and not hit the snooze button as usual. We've just got to make better use of our arable land and, at least, cut back our dependency on foreign produce. Well, what can you say about the Ukranian farmers. If that isn't bravery I don't know what is. They obviously realise nature waits for no one and turning tail and running isn't an option.

When will our government learn, if not now, then probably never! We must become self sufficient (or as near as possible) in food and energy. Farming is key, and sacrificing good land to development (housing, roads, warehousing, HS2 etc) and daft solar farms is utterly ridiculous. Especially when thousands of acres of warehouse roofs have no panels on! We really should be eating more locally and seasonally, supporting our farming industry. Much more environmentally friendly to do this than import such huge quantities.
Love the fencing, real craftsmanship. Not sure if people realise how much farmers contribute to the look of the rural environment!

Have you heard of polyhalite fertiliser? There is a massive reserve near Whitby. There is a mine being developed but the government would not give the British company a loan, so they had to sellout to anglo American. There is so much fertiliser there that the exports are worth 7% of the trade deficit. Government can magic up a trillion for covid but not a 100M for something productive.

Scary how prices of fertiliser are shooting up and ask is it sustainable for farming to continue in the present guise? And isn’t it time to look back to our farming past and look at mixed farming and incorporating animal waste back into the ground and not relying on petrochemical fertiliser?
Farming is awfully different to when I was in the industry and I question why Governments no matter the colour have allowed a Country to become so dependant on outside supplies when you consider the calamities that WW2 brought. Wasn’t lessons learnt then? Or has the need for globalisation been too much in the forefront of Governments minds rather than seeing the mistakes of the past?
Haphazard questions that I don’t think can be answered and I applaud you for giving an unbiased view of farming today and long May it continue

I wish that this sort of information was more mainstream - part of a more honest and complete news article, as I am sure a lot of people see the price of grains going up and think framers are going to "make hay while the sun shines" if you pardon the pun, where as in reality your farming costs (fertiliser etc) are going up exponentially so if anything farmers are worse off not better. You all must understand WHY the governments around the world allow instance price increases on fuel..
    Tax.
64% of a litre cost is TAX..
So if it increases by 10p per litre
    Bang
6:4p more tax for the government
It’s exactly the same on heating fuels !!!
All of our goods have VAT SO INCREASES in goods more VAT
    Wake up..
The fuel companies have the grief
    The governments make the taxes

Everyone should have a vegetable garden if you have any space whatsoever. Farmers like Harry are not going to be able to go organic but you can. Three tonnes of horse manure is a lot more feasible for individuals than thousands of tonnes for industrial level farming.
You can get top yields with just compost, no need for artificial fertilisers/pesticides when you grow for yourself and can micromanage everything. If you get started now (bit late this year but better than never), you can probably make your money back when food goes up 50% next harvest.

He did say he was going to have to put one at one point, and that the neighbors would not be happy, frankly if people don't like the sounds of the country they might want to evaluate their life choices.
I live in a cottage about the width of a road from farm building where the cows make a lot of noise when their calves are taken off them, that is day and night, also I'm not that far from a military range where the tanks and artillery and machine-gun fire can go on till late evening. as they are doing at this very min. Not that I'm not sympathetic to your situation. but it could be worse, at least you don't have a live-firing military range down the road. :) Best wishes.

We farm on the london green belt, and we've had over 100 acres of tenanted land taken away by the council for tree planting. Apparently to increase public access and reduce "flooding" although not sure where! We fought the food security/food miles case but they didn't care. Its all about money and green virtue signalling, they've now spent millions of public money on this, miles of deer fencing and footpaths, there are parks all around us and most of the time they're desolate apart from dog walkers. All that and it will give nothing back that wasn't in the area already. I wonder how many Ukrainian refugees that 100 acres could have fed! I don't think things will change either, this is a government who is wilfully strangling our industry.
Isn't it ironic that the very reason we had subsidies in the first place is now actually happening while they phase them out. They may live to regret it.
