Harry, you and Clarkson are bringing farming to a new audience. You guys can make change simply by doing what your doing and getting the word out about farming, how hard it is, and the love for it that it takes to be successful at it. Keep it up. Please promote this channel more on your Harry's Garage channel. That's how I found you and have watched it for a good long time. You can reach a new audience from there that may not be looking for farming stuff. The algorithm brought me here, not your other channel if you get me.

Having watched this I'm dismayed at the policy changes you outline. We need to increase food production in our country not actively reduce it. Also I've been fully 'plant based' for 2.5 years for health reasons. In this time I've become increasingly concerned about environmental impacts I personally make & as a PB well aware the increasing vegan options are not good environmentally let alone health wise. One obvious food option example is avocado which I refuse to buy. I'm against USA style mega factory beef production, it is catastrophic for the environment but you showcased your cattle locally raised glass fed and absolutely fine given that beef consumption needs to be satisfied. Policies need to promote our farmers to grow more & its shocking that people like you are not supported appropriately. Great content Harry keep it up.

@@paulwaite2219 as I said it's an obvious example & by inference is not the only problem, the carbon footprint of transportation is very high for anything moved from the other side of the world & that's before we get into production/processing impacts. Any comments in this tiny forum are likely to be generalised however its a multi faceted problem. One thing however is encouraging UK farmers to produce food for us is an area they should focus on rather than discourage it or seemly so. Encouraging new potential crops, Harry is open to this & probably the type of individual we need driving farming policy

Thanks for that very interesting content Harry. This government has no detailed plan for agriculture and for that matter nor the economy. The main reason for this is to identify how things could be done better or where we are going wrong there would have to be an investigation which would show up the disaster that Brexit has been. So no plan then. I dread to think what the English Hill farmers are going to do. Farmers number one priority should be producing food for our country not being paid park keepers. How can it be good for the environment to import Beef and Lamb from the other side of the world? We should be supporting our farmers to provide us with our own high quality produce and meat which they do so well. Beggars belief.

Being paid to leave your wheat in the ground when we are having to import food highlights the complete stupidity of this government. The farmers should be left to make these important decisions and not the politicians who have no knowledge of what is required. If the vegan’s diet has to be imported then steak and chips will be so much cheaper than their plant based diet.

It seems that has all gone and all we have is a Ministry more concerned with birdies and hedgerows, than food security and self-sufficiency. Robert Winder's 'The Last Wolf' talks about the Medieval campaign to rid the county of wolves, so we could develop our wool industry. Now some lunatics want to reintroduce them. Have we gone totally mad in this country to be led by the nose by people such as Chris Packham?

If you talk to these people then you soon get down to why they hold these views. Many of these people are adherents to a globalised society and envision a world in which we can just import anything we need. It's the same idea that allows them to justify bringing in never ending amounts of people into such a small land mass. They don't see the world as it is but in an infantile and utopian way in which differing nations, populations and cultures no long exist but we are all one interchangeable mass.
Thus, your local security concerns are irrelevant to them because they don't recognise your locality as a distinct thing.

I'm so sorry for all farmers in the UK (and elsewhere) for the low profit on crops. Damn, you surely have my compassion.
Ofc all other kind of farmers as well, but crops are the only thing I got any insight in. I know there is a huge problem for anyone who keeps cattle, sheeps, pigs, chicken, etc., that electricity prices are through the roof.

Another great video, highlighting the very real challenges faced by British Farmers. Urbanisation and Globalisation has had such a negative impact on the countryside in the last 40 years, everything from driving up property prices to switching Government focus away from what we should be focused on (food security being pretty high!)…. Anyway, I’d like to see much more of Stanley, he’s great…!

Well said Harry. Government not fit for purpose. We should be growing more, can’t do that by planting more trees and unproductive headlands, which the government is happy to pay farmers to do. Absolutely crazy. Have you considered standing as an MP.

If the population is reduced, not so much food is needed to be grown. It’s not beyond the realms! And if Harry wants to know what he needs to be doing ahead of 2024, I suggest that he looks at what the large landowners (Duchy’s of Lancaster & Cornwall may be a good starting point) are doing now to get an idea.

You may be interested to hear that the (initially) reported CO2 impact of a plant-based 🥐 was in error. There is a great piece (8 minutes long) on BBC radio’s More or Less that delves into this and the difficulty of calculating environmental impact generally. It’s the 14th November 2021 podcast (8mins long). My earlier comment on this seems to have been deleted, possibly for including a link!

Another absolutely fantastic video Harry, the government seems hell bent on cutting any home grown production, whether its agriculture or manufacturing off at the knees and relying on importing everything, I find it absolutely shocking we import so much milk! Does anyone in these government departments actually have any real life experience in the fields they are destroying?

Been a while since we've seen you out on the Farm, Harry. Too many tasty treats in your Garage, like the purple Bentley that keep you out on the B roads instead of in the fields with the Defender. Good to have you back with dirt on your boots and mud in the wheel wells.

    Great talk.
My take on the future: look at each acre of land, if it can grow a useful crop then put it to food, if it's too steep or rocky then put it to hardwood trees (I know a man who harvests his trees with a horse and chalns, totally low impact). Britain needs to be 'green' and well quality fed. A few more fields of Chia would be good.

Great content as usual and we are heading back to US after 2 years here. 2 nurses with 25 years experience but not worked since coming back in 19! Keep up the fight and look at Ostritch meat as an alternative, very little methane produced and good tasty brown meat. Even your local Aldi imports it from S. Africa!

An example of what the policy changes will mean is what our consultant suggested to us this week , we are an organic dairy farm and he outlined us cutting cow numbers in half , shedding all payed staff and ploughing up some of our permanent pasture to grow cereals or whatever attracts the highest payments , on paper we would actually be better off than we are right now with much less work , there will be hundreds or thousands of farmers who will have worked the same thing out , not good for the shoppers as the shelves will be bare

Good stuff Harry- well summarised. It’s a confusing and worrying time for us in the farming community. My big fear is that despite all the well meaning encouraging words, the reality will be a disappointing typical government fudge that misses the massive wins that could be available. I’m very cynical about the likely outcome once the Treasury decides what funding it can or, more to the point, can’t afford. I think the pressure on them to rein in agricultural spending will be immense. Then there’s inevitable raft of impenetrable bureaucracy, rules and paperwork that average farmers can’t fathom that will stifle the farmer led innovation that industry badly needs and could easily supply with the right encouragement. The main beneficiaries of it all will be the agricultural support industries like professional advisors, land agents etc.
I think any subsidy payments need to be based on measurable beneficial returns from changes in farming methods that influence important keystone issues such as soil organic matter/carbon, water quality etc on our farms. So if you increase soil organic matter beyond a base figure you will receive a financial reward for your efforts. It’s up to the farmer to decide how this is best done on his farm. Similarly if changes in your farming methods lower nitrate or phosphate levels in the run off from your farm then you get rewarded. This would be much more preferable to the prescriptive alternatives that we already see in similar arrangements like the countryside stewardship scheme.

Good video as always. I just read a selection of the comments below. All good valid points. I fear they will remain as common sense opinions only. There is no longer anyone in power thinking beyond ticking boxes and securing their own personal wealth. We will all just have to do our best without leadership from those in power.
