- We should be combining the barley but we can't go because there's a problem plus grain prices have dropped dramatically over the past few weeks, which makes it harder to know if it's worth planting next year's crop.
I'm not a farmer, I'll never be a farmer but these videos are really fascinating especially as I live in a rural area. It gives me an insight in to what the various farmers are up to.
Absolutely. I’m not from a farming background but I live in the country now and as a youngster I was so interested I even studied farming at college and worked on a farm. But I still learn SO much from Harry’s videos. I guess that’s just the nature of a very very broad industry. Farmers really are masters of a multitude of trades.
Same here. I moved to a rural village in Worcestershire in March and really enjoy wandering the network of footpaths and seeing the crops develop. I loved Clarkson’s Farm and have been following 3 RUclips farming channels since. It was this that inspired me to make the move.
I actually live in Australia and was bought up on a farm..Merino Sheep and Hereford Cattle I don't know much about cropping, a whole different world..Thankyou Harry good stuff..👍👍👍
also not a farmer - perplexed consumer. can come over with suitcase full of potash (not the other) if that helps
Me too
14:39 People have high levels of glyphosate in their urine, with a big reason being the off-label practice of farmers desiccating (drying) the crop just before harvest by spraying with Roundup, which causes foods made from these crops to have a lot of glyphosate herbicide, which people eat and digest.
I really am impressed that you hire people like Mark to display his amazing craftmanship and expertise, just incredible. I really miss the farm I grew up on, it's a wonderful way of life.
me think's harry is a bit more wealthy than the average farmer!
He still has to make the farm pay like any other farmer
@@nickaf5262 farming only pays because of government subsidies.
@@kevinharker1840 Wrong. The majority of farms are profitable without.
@@trainman665 ok then, lets end all subsidies now shall we? and see how long the tennant farmers last.
I'll be harvesting rice in North East Thailand in November using Kubotas. Small machines but practical. Similar process. Fuel expensive, price of rice very low. No help from government at all. Good luck Harry with the harvest.
Thanks for your great comment, fantastic to hear how farming is going from other parts of the world! Kubotas have an excellent reputation for keeping going at all times..
The farmers in the Netherlands have figured out the agenda to deliberately destroy farming that their government and all others are involved in hence the farmers massive protests there - everything that has been going on this last two years plus and everything that is going on just now is part of this agenda by these Mafias who own and control most of this planet being exposed in this video here and as per this video part of this agenda is 95% of the worlds population not being here by 2050 as well ruclips.net/video/98qv9ztkW_U/видео.html
That has to be a throwback to ages gone by for the craft of creating such a beautiful stone wall - congratulations. Thanks for sharing
That stone wall is stunning, well done Mark! Glad to see you do things properly, including the iron fencing you put in last winter. You can now forget about them, unlike the modern Post fencing that would need renewing in 5 years. Great video
It is nice to look at, then so is a living hedge. I layed a hedge last year and would imagine it's easier to do that than dry stone wall. Each to their own. A mixture is good.
Yes it’s a work of art
Good post and rail would last a lot longer than 5 years, more like 30 years. I still agree that the stone wall and estate fencing are much nicer though.
I love dry stone walls and how they change as you move around the country. I love the variations in the craft. I built a house in Argyll with stone walls and it’s extremely satisfying and I know what he means about the corner stones! Very precious.
I really appreciate the dedication gone into that wall - looks amazing. Well done Mark!
Classy watch and beaded bracelets. Suave.
Congrats on the 100k Harry. You got your wish :)
Thanks, 100k arrived a bit quicker than I was expecting too!
In these uncertain global times, I believe more and more that the UK's farming industry should be a high priority for govt. I cycle around the lanes in the Warwickshire and Worcestershire countryside, with a curious eye on the various comings and goings of our farmers, and I always wish them well. It's great that people like Harry explain some of the thoughts and processes to the rest of us.
Absolutely agree..
Farmers should be made priority immediately.as this in Russia and Ukrainian is going to cause huge implications with food..
It’s no different to energy WE NEED TO BE SELF SUFFICIENT.
And yet the politicians are concreting over vast areas of farmland just to build houses. Very short sighted
When I cycled through the Midlands countryside I'd delight at the smell of a warm field of wheat. Loved it. Always wish I knew more of farming. I'm too fearful of getting knocked off the bike now to do much cycling anywhere.
We can't be self-sufficient though.
How is the government going to control you unless they CRUSH the farmers and take their land? The government looks after you in the same way the mafia looks after people
Stone wall is fantastic. At The National Stone Centre in Wirksworth there is a row of dry stone wall built in all the main styles, the variation is quite dramatic. There range from your style of wall to (I think) Scottish Borders walls which are made from really large lumps of stone.
We were in the Scottish borders a few years ago near Castle Douglas. I remember how really poorly put together the dry stone walls were.
The one Hadrian built is still standing.
If James May had a farm ! Such An enjoyable and interesting channel. Love it
The wall is amazing!! Well done to Mark!!
Nice to see someone investing in stone walling and it's nice to see someone who takes pride in building it.
Here in Montana we can buy snowmobile gas. Ethanol free fuel. We use this in all our small engines, weekenders, chainsaws, water pumps and sawmill. I still try and run them dry before winter but if I forget stuff still starts in the spring.
Harry, there's a company in western Canada called Redekop and they specialize in aftermarket straw choppers. They have developed a straw chopper that pulverizes all the harvestable weed seeds/grains. It helps with controlling volunteer crop growth and preventing herbicide tolerant weeds, both as you know are very expensive to deal with! Greetings from Saskatchewan :)
The combines are travelling too fast and grain is going over the sieves. We never had this problem when I combined in the 1970s! Stop regularly to clean the sieves, and turn the fan down to stop the grain from blowing over the back. Everyone is in too big a hurry these days!
@@stuartstead3768 Grain going over the sieves is a settings issue not a ground speed issue. These large combines need to be running near maximum capacity to harvest effectively and efficiently. Running at 95 to 100% capacity with the correct setting will yield the cleanest sample and minimize lose out the back. Also farmers with a problem with volunteer cereals within a cereal crop should pay closer attention to crop rotation so herbicide selection isn’t so limited.
100k subscribers ! Well done Harry.
Love the Kicking Horse t-shirt, Harry! That's a gnarly resort, that one. Great restaurant at the top, too.
Jesus, that wall is majestic. I dread to think what it cost, but it is no doubt worth it.
I bet Mark is never sat at home waiting for work for the phone to ring. He must be in demand for jobs like that. What a job on the wall, brilliant
I'm one of your Cotswold (Burford) neighbours, we start on our OSR this afternoon. We also had wheat in our winter barley but to a lower level. Wishing you all the best for this summer.
Always a great video, thank you Harry 👍 hit 100k now wahooooooo
That wall is a work of art.
Best of luck Harry. Be careful you don’t lose all the barley. Thanks for spending money on the dry stone wall, and thats from a fencing supplier. Ellis Dawe and Son Ltd.
15:40 you can just hear a yellowhammer in the background…..lovely
Harry, from the Car side of your house but ran across this and your grain price title perked my interest.
The narrative and news has shifted from inflation, inflation, inflation to recession. When that narrative shifts so do commodities and that is why prices have moderated some. Problem for the economy and everyone is that the Fed will continue to hike rates into a slow down since they are so behind the curve. This will slow down the economy further and prices. Managing time is what you need to do, fertilizer etc should come down too but always on a lag of course. I am an independent wealth manager registered with the SEC in Virginia.
I enjoy your content thanks.
Harry this is exceptional you are always inspiring many people out there 👍👍
101k Subscribers now Harry. Well done, keep up the good work!!
I find that Esso super petrol is perfect for little-used petrol engines. Esso super has ZERO ethanol (unlike any other E5 petrol) and is high octane so doesn’t go off. And not outrageously expensive.
My favourite channel on RUclips, cannot be topped!
101K subscribers!!! well done Harry. Thanks for the show.
Just checked,you made
the 100K. Bravo, Thanks for the video(s).
Hoping it all goes your way... and for everybody in farming.
Your ordinary explanation of the wheat delaying the harvest and the fluctuating futures price is most informative.
Love your channel.I wish we had RUclips and you on it as I learn more from you about cereal growing than I did in ag collage 30 something years ago .
Nice video Harry, love the Kicking Horse shirt too...I've skiied there many many times, since they're local-ish (4 hours away) to me! One of the great undiscovered hills in Canada.
Hello from Ukraine🇺🇦, thanks for the update.
I would like to learn more about farm business. Thanks .
I would love to hear you weigh in on the Dutch farmer protest Harry. Curious your thoughts.
That wall is fantastic! I'm from the US. We don't have walls like that. Just incredible.
Excellent craftsmanship on that stone wall beautiful.but as those trees grow it will push the wall over again.
One of my favourite channels.
Harry you are excellent explaining everything that goes on in farming, great to look and listen too, hope you and your team have a safe and great harvest
Congratulations on the 100k. Well Deserved. 👍
You’ve been to France for a fortnight Harry? Yippee! Road trip vids to follow I hope 👍
You've hit 100k now Harry, kudos mate
Something so pleasing and right about that dry stone wall, and the reasons for and process of building it.
Thank you harry for yet again a very interesting and very informative video, you have a very good style of delivery that keeps people like me a non farmer glued to the screen please keep these coming. All the very best.
Fantastic as always. Sat here in my office on the other side of the planet it's surreal to see where I grew up and fantastic to get a slice of the life I used to have. Say hello to Tom, my stepbrother, and John my cousin who have cameoed a few times with spraying, etc.
This guy is like the James May of the farming world, so many likenesses! And I mean that as a compliment. Interesting, informative with a bit of humour, all round top bloke!
I've know idea where he is though?
I'm guessing he's not in Suffolk with that accent!?
No matter if it are cars or farming I like your videos…
Another 20k subscriber should deal with a falling grain market Harry. Lovely stretch of wall.
Congratulations on another great film that shows how much goes into farming Harry
And now your over the 100K subs well done.
Sir, thank you for updating this channel. For farming illiterates as myself, this is the best farming simulator! This is a great experience.
Congrats, watching this on the 16th and it's reporting a nice neat and tidy 100k subs!
That wall is a real beauty 👏🏼
That fence is incredible. What a back breaking job it must be. A true craftsman.
i look forard to these videos. i used to work on a farm when i left school and these videos bring back fond memories. thanks for posting.
Thanks a lot for great videos. I have myself been working within agriculture here in Sweden and so is my son now. Being a car head, I also enjoy your car videos and the combination with travel experiences makes it so much more interesting. Keep going ☺️. Greetings from Gregor in Sweden.
That’s a very impressive wall and in just two weeks!
Looked like you were gonna twist up a barley joint Harry
Thanks for creating such interesting content. I really trust your advice on the market - certainly more than a lot we see in the press!
Harry, i've been a Harrys Farm Subscriber since you started it and it is fantastic. So interesting to see how a farm actually works. Keep up the good work!
Congrats on the 100+ subs Harry, very well deserved! 👏👏👏
Thanks Harry. Love watching your farming life.
Compliments on the T-shirt, hope you enjoyed the runs off Stairway to Heaven
Great stuff Harry, the wall looks really great, best of luck with the harvest fingers crossed for all farmers!👏👍😀
Love these videos,a REAL insight into what’s going on in the farming world !
Great content as ever Harry, fingers crossed for the weather going the right way for the Wheat/Barley
That bloke made a bloody good job of that wall, on the moisture test, we always add another percent after the combine and am sure you do too.
Beautiful wall. Job well done!
Thanks for the update. Fascinating learning how framers navigate ever changing weather and market forces. It's a real balancing act you need to pull off.
Harry I love your videos. I’m a frustrated farmer you see. I’m an Aussie retired school teacher and taught at a Public school in SE England from 89-95 and worked on mixed farms in Herts/Essex area during long summers. I’ve also started doing seasonal farm work in Aus to keep me busy. I’ve done a season planting and harvesting the WA wheatbelt and in the Vic Mallee. Your farm looks stunning and your videos are first class!
Very impressive stone wall 👌
LOVE the drystone wall! wishing you all Blessings and good fortune! cheers from Canada!
The very best of luck with your harvest Harry Beautiful work by Mark he is a master craftsman 👌👍
So very interesting, thank you for sharing.
Great content, what an excellent job on the stone wall, great to see.
The stone wall is a work of art. Fantastic job.
100k from what I can see. Well done, you're truly making a difference Mr Metcalf.
Thanks for sharing Harry 🦘👍
That was really interesting to see the problems you guys have! 😬🤞I hope it all works out for the better soon!! I love the wall that mark has done! Just fantastic to see! 😊😉
The drystone walling is just fab… superb 👌🏼👌🏼
Brilliant Harry, good luck, many thanks.
A fascinating look into the problems faced by farmers. Thank you Harry.
Thanks love the stone wall looks great. And the info on harvest injoy all your videos
The stone wall looks incredible! That man is very talented hope he has many apprentices to pass on the knowledge
Down here we call the whole machine a header and the part you call a header we call the comb. When they are being worked for harvest,,around November they refer to it as Stripping.
Some years ago the price of oats rose here and some of the farmers I knew were digging up oats they had buried decades ago. Just buried in thre soil ,the top layer was a bit down graded but the rest was OK. A mate had a Duetz powered vacuum machine to pull the oats out of the pits/clamps. Something you may have to consider in the UK until these WEF chappies are bought to book.
We cannot be stopped! We control your governments and will not give up until you are all enslaved and eating soylent green burgers and the dark lord rules the world!!!.......mwooahh haahaa ha ha.......oh yes, nice fence but might need to build it a bit higher for when we increase the food shortages and the desperate hoards come hunting :) Trust the WEF x
100k now. Totally deserved and will, I am sure, accelerate as word spreads. It's such a great - and uniquely informative - channel.
Congratulations!
Thank you for taking the time to explain the issues facing arable farmers at this crucial time of year. Like other
subscribers I live in rural surrounding and have a vague idea of what is happening around me but your videos are giving
a much needed depth of insight. Really looking forward to the next video and stay cool!
Good luck with your harvest. Love that beautiful stone wall!
I do about 1500 miles a week around the coutry, year on year, and this year its grain, grain, grain everywhere. fields of gold. makes a nice change for flax...
Well done on the 100k subscribers. These are crazy times. Good luck with harvest and I look for to seeing that
Thanks Harry. I have been eagerly awaiting this video. The dry stone wall is beautiful and I can imagine the joy seeing it each morning. Importantly Mark is maintaining his craft which is vital to preserve rural history and beauty. My wife wishes me to say how interesting and informative your farm videos are. An accolade from a towny by upbringing. I have work to do to keep her attention when watching your Harry’s Garage an absolute must for me now I find travelling to motoring events rather tiring. One of the joys of old age!
Wonderful stone wall!
Stone wall looking superb. With this dry spell and high temperatures countryside is tinder dry. Reckon it's a good idea to keep a water bowser and pump in the field when combining in case of fire, if unlucky striking a flint with the combine header could cause a spark and be eneough to ignite dry tinder.
Love your tee shirt Harry, an epic place!
Brilliant walling, great decision and well done Mark.
Cheers Harry, love that dry stone wall work, that fella is an artist.
Enjoyed your videos Harry. Keep it up. I am just back from Saskatchewan Canada, where arable farming is really an industrial scale. 1 mile grid squares in the prairies, with fields of 640 acres. Flat and great for taking the combine out for a blast. Seen a few Case machines and thought of you… good luck for the 2022 Harvest !
Nice shirt golden BC is an absolutely awesome place! We grow the same crops as you 4 hours drive from golden. We never grow barley after wheat for this reason.
