Together, we nurture and celebrate the literary life of Nashville by presenting author talks and book signings to our community.
What he's done and who he's worked with - beyond amazing.
I have seen a few of these interviews that he has done to promote his book, but I think this one is my favourite. What an interesting (for want of a better word) life this man has had and one of the most influential men in popular music history. But many people would not have a clue who he is. The man deserves a knighthood or something !!!
It's that "or something" which suggests the ineffable qualities, traits, skills, sensitivities which are necessary to listen and respond "correctly" to sounds so as to best capture and present as significant music, maybe?
I had read his book, but this was better. I like that he admits to 'not' liking certain acts and artists and is willing to be honest about his failings also. Makes him just like us, human.
Watching him jump in and orchestrate questions with the audience gives a feel of how dynamic and quick Glyn is in making things happen. Fantastic!

This man worked with the Stones, the Beatles, the Who, Led Zeppelin, the Small Faces, Steve Miller Band and countless other bands/artists. You don't get to engineer for great bands unless you have talent.
Yup, that's why they employ him. You wouldn't have a bad gas boiler repairman would you, so you get the best.

I have seen a few interviews from this great man! He always comes across as humble and honestly forthright! A total legend I think! What a great life he has had in music! Lucky him, but he deserves it!

Early Small Faces is just as heavy as the subsequent music of Led Zeppelin - kid you not. There was a precedent for Zep's sound.
Just listen to the Small Faces of You need Lovin - the old Blues song - Jimmy/ Robert stole the Lyric and Whole Lotta Love and bobs your uncle
Absolutely. Listen to the Small Faces ‘ You need Loving’ ( Willie Dixon / Muddy Waters ‘You Need Love). Sound familiar ? Way before Zeppelin. That’s why Jimmy Page wanted Steve Marriott to be the lead singer for ‘The New Yardbirds ‘ but Marriott formed Humble Pie.

If you watched The Beatles: Get Back in 2021, you'll remember Glyn Johns as the producer for them in the film (George Martin was on camera a few times, but wasn't really involved since they were rehearsing for a recorded live show, not a studio recording. CORRECTION: Martin was scheduled to produce the live show that never happened, just not the rehearsals.) Glyn is the one that's always in charge in the control room, and you see him often talking to the boys in the rehearsal space as well.
Phil Spector did a great job with that album though in the end...I just listened to Glynn John's mixes and they were pretty flat compared to Phil's versions of the same songs....I guess the documentary didn't want to give the murderer screen time
He was key in the entire process. And offering input - to the Beatles.
@@bradmodd7856 Spector wasn't around when the filming was being done - he worked with the tapes much much later without most of the band knowing - they talk about that in this video - Glyn Johns (perhaps inevitably) hated what Spector did but so did Macca. Its a matter of teste obviously but I think Spector's work on Let It Be was bloody awful, though he did wonderful work with Lennon and Harrison. Purely IMHO

I love this man. Brilliant mind.
A Glynn Johns recording was always done with a great attention to detail and sound textures.For example, Glynn knows how to mic drums well and his cymbal sound is warm with detail- not shrill or over-enhanced. His recordings with the Stones, The Who, Who's Next is a classic example of how Glynn can record musical detail, range and texture. Glynn's brother Andy also worked on many great albums working with Glynn on Joan Armatrading's output. One of the best examples of Glynn's engineering capability is the Stones Lady Jane. This about how great that song sounds and how it sounds better than anything else recorded at that time. The detail recorded from Brian's guitar, Jagger's vocals. She Smiled Sweetly from Between The Buttons is another. The entire album is a great example of Glynn's work.
Lady Jane? In the Aftermath album? That's not him but Dave Hassinger (Jefferson Airplane first album, the Electric Prunes...) 😉

Recording, wherein science meets soul. What an interesting and amusing interview. Kinks, Who, Beatles, Zeppelin. Listening to Charlie, and then Keith when he enters at the beginning of Honky Tonk Women, I always felt I was in the room. Thanks for this, well done.
His discussion of the difference between his method of recording, and the current way things are done, is absolutely fantastic! He's 100% right! The proof is in the results that Glyn Johns got on so many classic recordings. So much music today is canned digital crap where the emotional content doesn't exist like it should. The greatest recordings of all time going back to the very beginning, like Louis Armstrong and Big Biederbecke and Charlie Parker and all those fanatastic recordings----- is done in the manner that Glyn Johns is talking about. It's about the music and how the musicians play with each other, first and foremost.
Hi Joe, Glyn was an old school chum of mine and when we formed our band The Presidents he had just started at IBC Studios and we would go up to London and he would experiment with us. In 1964 he produced our version of Candy Man for Decca who sadly passed it to Brian Poole leaving us to release it as a B side. We did a follow up which somehow got lost at Decca and has just been found in LA in June 2018 and has just been released. That Harmonica Player - Brian, was Brian Wyles and the band was called the Night Shift. After which Jeff joined the Yard Birds.

Glyn Johns produced their first session, not their first LP. 5 songs that haven't been released until 2012. Road Runner, Diddley Daddy, I Want To Be Loved (1st version), Baby What's Wrong and Bright Lights Big City. None of them have been included on The Rolling Stones Debut LP, which was produced by Andrew Oldham and Eric Easton. Glyn Johns produced lots of later Rolling Stones sessions.

I just Noticed the Year Here 2015, I got to Meet Pete Townshend Again that Year in May, And even through seeing THE WHO in 2019 - With VIP Passes - 2015 Stands as the Most Recent time Seeing Him. Love Listening to Glyn's Story...So Much...Much I didn't know at all nor had a Clue.
Talk about a guy being at ground zero. I collected a lot of late sixties and early 70's albums in my youth, and I'd see this guy's name on the record jacket over and over. And now, 30 to 50 years later, we can easily learn about the man behind the name. One of the advantages of living today. Believe me, back in the day we couldn't access clips of Deep Purple playing in Sweden or the Beatles playing Japan.
Exactly, I've loved Deep Purple's version of 'Hush' for years and only a couple of months ago saw for the first time the video they made for that with Jon Lord looning around and the lead singer diving into the pool...it was priceless. And video gems like that are turning up all the time.

Not sure what Joe Meek''s position was (production/sound engineer also i think owned the studio/business) but he was in the industry very early with Lord Such and Richie Blackmore and others in the British scene he was a lot older then the John's, Kramer's etc

a studio. This is where he made his hits , Johnny remember me, have I the right, Telstar etc.
He wasn't an engineer. He was THE engineer.

Paul Kennerly's story is quite interesting in its own way - married to Emylou Harris wrote a truck load of material that all kinds of people recorded from Emylou Harris to Ray Charles to Albert Lee and many others
I read that the small faces and humble pie always wanted Glyn so with Marriott one of the best vocalist they couldn't go wrong
Steve Marriott was Jimmy Pages first choice for ‘The New Yardbirds’ but Steve formed Humble Pie with Peter Frampton also on guitar.

He is right about computers ruining music. But as a musician, especially if you make rock or pop you can’t really release “uncorrected” music because the masses are too used to perfect recordings and they consider you amateur if you leave the human mistake in the recording. Maybe if everyone would stop correcting mistakes we could go back to “human” music.
Those "errors" could drive music to something unique and special which nowadays is lost in most modern music
I love Glyn and the interviewer is doing a fine job despite his inexperience but the interviewers mic is at one level Glyn’s is at another and the audiences is at another. I cannot find the balance on my headphones that won’t blow my head off every 10 seconds. It goes without saying Glen has nothing to do with the engineering of this interview.

You want to record au naturel and capture the essence of the artist then Glyn is your man. Glyn was a sound photographer in essence. There is a large difference tween Zeppelin and Joan Armatrading and all acts in between. His Get Back is not the audio schlock Spector let it become.

I read in a book somewhere that Andy replaced Glyn as an engineer working with Jimmy Miller, when his big brother was promoted to "Produce" The Eagles.

Yes I feel that is correct and will stand by that assessment. Andy took over engineer duties for his brother in service of Miller's productions. Island and Olympic were their studios as well. Richard Digby Smith 2nd engineer on those Miller cuts.

The one person he didn't pan was Phil Spector. Phil Spector was more than washed up at that point.
He did say that the relationship between Lennon and Spector was a "really, REAlly strange combination of people," that Spector "puked all over" Johns' recordings, and that Let it Be is "just an awful, awful" recording.

The host, in his intro, apparently thought he was being clever and humorous but ultimately and unnecessarily injected his own bias into the format.

Whilst I agree to a certain amount ie why not say 'A sound like Israeli phosphorus bombs blowing up' Hesbollah bombs/rockets do kill the odd innocent person.. Israeli kill far more innocent people. Prefer if no innocent people were killed or targeted.
