  • Glyn Johns talks with analogplanet.com editor Michael Fremer about the making of Eric Clapton's new album "I Still Do" and about his book "Sound Man". This version edits out the phone-line communication breakdown the was mistakenly included in the original post.

Interesting interview technique. I suppose constantly interrupting the interviewee creates a certain tension that may elicit responses that wouldn't otherwise come out...however it makes for quite an anxiety-inducing listen - never knowing if Johns is about to be cut off just before sharing some critical piece of information.

Just let him talk!! John was absolutely right in asking him to desist in expecting him to agree with him. Interesting material, but spoiled by all too common narcissistic attitudes.

Can’t be bothered to listen anymore….I was interested in what Glyn had to say. You’ve gotta give him a chance to expand his thoughts

Great interview. Leaving for my local record store right now. I think this is pretty BIG, having Eric Clapton, get behind the analog revolution. I have to ask, Michael, what do you think about the enthusiasm for compact cassette? Seems to be a lot of enthusiasm for compact cassette and reel to reel now also. People are embracing analog on all fronts now. I love it!

I can't help but to think what a good record played on a table like the one you have and recorded on a Nakamichi Dragon deck using a NOS TDK MA-R would sound like? All my tape experience predates my interest in high end audio, so I have no idea how good it can get with tape. Maybe my ears were not that critical back in the day. How good was the Dragon?

+Analog Planet what is your take on the sound of cassettes? I have some that sound quite nice.

That's what I thought. Had a hard time getting the proper question across. When I was young, we bought the record and "Mastered" your own tape using top end Maxell or TDK tapes and they sounded fantastic.Than you archived the records for safe keeping. On E-Bay and RUclips there is what looks like a huge enthusiasm for Nakamichi tape decks and Metal Tapes. The internet has leveled the playing field and people are gravitating toward what they like! And it"s ANALOG ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UPDATE: Found a Nakamichi RX-202 on E-Bay. Played some tapes...........sound is ok. Find a copy of Chris Isaac's "Wicked Game". Sounds like all the best attributes of vinyl. Found my old tapes made in the late eighties. That ANALOG SOUND is there.! No wonder people are so enthusiastic about these things. I'm starting to think digital is a flawed medium and doomed to failure...

I’ve worked with guys like this in feature film.
Actually easy as they know everything about everyone’s job, they keep you on your toes, and leave happy as they get what they envisioned.
    Truly a master task man.
One of my producer buddies was a 2nd at ocean way and put small flanges on a 2trk. And it scrunched.
He said “ was that my 2trk?…..and left the room.
He saved it with a clothes iron.
    Happy ending.
    Now he’s a monster veteran.❤️

There is no choice. They can't give away digital music. My children see digital as nothing but a free medium.

Terrible interviewer. It's not about getting him to agree to your own opinions. Fremer really gets on Johns' nerves and very evidently. I'm surprised he didn't hang up.

Years of working with plenty of pricks, Glyn comes off as a snooty one himself. Well done Michael for rising above it all and being respectful
