Not what I was expecting but TMV are always breaking through their own sound expectations and not getting trapped in their own stereotypes or genres. Their music usually grows on me after a few listens and I suspect this will too. This has a much more upbeat, happier and tropical sound than a lot of their previous stuff, its different that’s for sure. Edit: after a few months I can say these songs are growing on me and I saw em play a couple of them live which helped too.
@@VibeMusicAI I don’t disagree, it’s definitely not deloused in the comatorium which is a masterpiece in my opinion. I hope the rest of the album will have more of their older sound. It happens to so many bands as they get older and richer and not as raw as they used to be.
@@bopeepaleep generally when bands change their sound it is progress. When it's not, it is generally considered to suck. For example, Propagandhi progressed from thrashy punk rock, to progressive hardcore and that was awesome. This is going from progressive hardcore to a simple pop ballad.
@@Molotov_Milkshake the point of my previous comment was that the first reply by Marc is saying that op claimed something they did not. the op did not state or claim "progress". the terms they used were "new" and "different". im not arguing about progress and whether or not it was made, neither was op. that is what Marc and now you are mistaken about. hope that clears up my initial comment and meaning. preferential bias for particular genre, for what a genre means or should contain, and what progress means within the context of sequential releases is another discussion entirely.
As soon as I listened to the new album I knew it would be divisive. But anyone who's disappointed, stuck, clinging to the sound of their old albums is unable to realize that the whole album is as much a masterpiece as deloused, just different. As a prog fan I was stunned by the direction of this and the recent Coheed albums with their pop and electronic style. But Mars Volta is showing that they, even more than Coheed, can make amazing music in any style. The entire album is amazing. This song is beautiful. The same insane talent and quality but more dressed up, focused, and mature.

Hearing this brought tears to my eyes. From happiness. I spent a portion of this year in a coma, and I am listening to this song each and every day multiple times. Thanks guys, for making my life better.
The Mars Volta became my favorite band around 2002. I had never heard anything like them, their music traversing soundscapes from high energy and speed to slow and melodic, Latin-based roots and bilingual language, so uncommon and unique. This song was just released. My first impression is the sounds span many generations and time: past, present, and future. They never cease to amaze me where they journey musically.
@@victormiranda4664 Though I fundamentally agree, tying the TMV label to this music makes me like it ess instantly. With TMV name comes certain expectations that, when not met, cause understandable disappointment. This IS good music, made in a way that only Omar and Cedric know how, but this is NOT The Mars Volta. Both the lyrics and music fail to align with their established musical identity, and it feels disingenuous for them to put it out under the TMV name.
@@burymeband5410 I understand what you mean, but I disagree. It’s not up to the consumer to say what is and what isn’t tmv. I don’t think there’s any tmv fans that would say that either of their first 2 albums suck, then you have the ones that say amputechture was their fall, others say bedlam was, I don’t know where you draw the line but my point is that it’s not up to us to say what a band can and can’t do with their art. It’s not disingenuous at all. What would be disingenuous for them is to create or label something to try and please their fans. Skream went from producing grimy dubstep to producing deep house, could you imagine what his fans felt? Lol. He explained in an interview that fans have no idea what that name means for him. In my opinion it’s a pretty balsy move to risk losing the fans you’ve acquired for the love of your art. Opeth is another clear example of this.
I mean you could be right tho, but it's been yeeears, people change and Omar never stopped creating and exploring. They just simply are what they are today*, and that's OK, they cannot be stuck in their past you know? It's all cool, I'm glad they're back and alive
@@victormiranda4664 I think this discussion ultimately comes down to what kind of TMV fan you are (or what kind of music fan you are in general). There are two main types: fans of artists, and fans of music. If you are a fan of an artist, you will likely accept any music an artist you have been following releases unconditionally because you are loyal to that artist and chock up any changes in their style to growth, and simply listen to the new style without batting an eye. Fans of music, on the other hand, listen to music an artist releases because they enjoy the style of music the artist in question has associated themselves with. When there is a case like Opeth or TMV where there is a sudden, dramatic shift in tone and style, there is a good chance that they will not listen to said music, because the band did not give them what they like. But can you blame them? If a restaurant you have grown to love starts serving food you don't like, why should you be expected to continue eating there? Ultimately, neither type of fan is less valid than the other, and I can guarantee almost everyone lies somewhere in the middle or is a different kind of fan depending on the band. TMV is completely entitled to release whatever music they please as a form of artistic expression, but it is silly that they consider fans who don't like their new style to not be fans at all. In the end, it would have been a safer bet to release this music under a different name. I apologize for being so long-winded, but i think that about sums up my thoughts, though I'd love to keep discussing this, as I am very passionate about music!
what the fuck? I mean, I love this- but damn, this is a new band. Not mad, I appreciate growth and I like a curveball. Wow. Very intrigued to see what else they have in store :)
Cedric: "Hey Omar. After three years in a pandemic situation and without playing shows we need money. After all, we have families to support." Omar: "Yes, I agree." Cedric: "Are we going to come back with TMV and make some mainstream music? Something like a pop songs to see if we can make it on Spotify?" Omar: "Of course. Excellent idea. But to be perfect, we need to make black and white video clips. Don't worry, Cedric. I'll direct the videos myself and i won't even use my guitar in the songs." Cedric: "Perfect. I'm gonna change my hair style too".

Idk…it’s a beautiful song and Cedric’s vocals will always be bad-ass no matter what. TMV had a sound that no one else could touch. They should have came back as TMV Revisited or the Sequel. 100% AGREE. They had their UNIQUE SOUND. Which is what every freakin band tries to achieve but most dont. Most comments seem blinded by their nostalgia(maybe even baised) and they'll OK anything. And/or never really got their sound. And going pop isn't creating something new its just shifting your music.
Stiamo scherzando???

Their ability to make music sounding so different is a sign of their great quality as musicians. Many prog bands evolved like this, e.g. Genesis, Pink Floyd and Yes. More accessible music makes it possible to appeal to a broader audience and that is a valid path.
Im not disagreeing with you but this is an example of it tastefully being executed and somehow capturing more emotion than even their heavy stuff. I doubt appealing to a broader audience was even on their mind.

Yeah but this is basically a bland pop track. Not sure how you can go from their earlier albums to this and call it progress.
@@VibeMusicAI I don’t disagree, it’s definitely not deloused in the comatorium which is a masterpiece in my opinion. I hope the rest of the album will have more of their older sound. It happens to so many bands as they get older and richer and not as raw as they used to be.
@@VibeMusicAI missed the part where op said "progress". they said new places and different.
I wish I could explain the emotion this song makes me feel. It’s so hauntingly beautiful and I can’t stop listening to it.
No need to dog on Coheed, just say you like the music dude.
@@charlesesquivel5754 wasn't meaning to criticize coheed so much as recognize how good of a job TMV did with this album. Coheed is my favorite band of all time but I thought TMV seem to be taking more flak from their fans for an album that admittedly does an even better job of stretching their bands vision than Vaxis 2 did. Both albums are great.

What an underrated Mars Volta song. I'm really surprised they're not playing it live.
I don't understand why they're putting this out as TMV. I guess their other projects didn't sell enough tickets.
It’s their art bro, they can do as they please
I was a fan since At The Drive In if anyone remembers that? Got into Sparta too but man I've always dug The Mars Volta
what the fuck? I mean, I love this- but damn, this is a new band. Not mad, I appreciate growth and I like a curveball. Wow. Very intrigued to see what else they have in store :)
i know a lot of hardcore fans gonna love this, and that's fair, but i am LOVING this.
how do they do every genre so well?
Such a beautiful song. Damn they are so good!
Cedric: "Hey Omar. After three years in a pandemic situation and without playing shows we need money. After all, we have families to support."
Omar: "Yes, I agree."
Cedric: "Are we going to come back with TMV and make some mainstream music? Something like a pop songs to see if we can make it on Spotify?"
Omar: "Of course. Excellent idea. But to be perfect, we need to make black and white video clips. Don't worry, Cedric. I'll direct the videos myself and i won't even use my guitar in the songs."
Cedric: "Perfect. I'm gonna change my hair style too".

I completely take this back. after listening to this album non stop it's like all the others: a masterpiece. noctourniquet now comes in last place for me.
Idk…it’s a beautiful song and Cedric’s vocals will always be bad-ass no matter what. TMV had a sound that no one else could touch. They should have came back as TMV Revisited or the Sequel. So far the new songs sound like TMV covering something else. I hope they’ll play at least a few old school songs at their shows. 🤞🏼Update: saw them at the Palladium (10.23.22) and could not have asked for a better show - thx! 🥹🥳
