    I just spent hours laying on plywood over my 2000 F150 4.2 V6 engine replacing the IMRC bushings between the back of the engine and firewall, with the intake manifold on. Basically "laproscopic surgery" using various wires, screwdrivers, a wooden spoon, and the few fingers I could squeeze in, very patiently getting the bushings installed, then the control rods in place. After that the P1518 code was gone, but eventually I pulled a P0171 code. I went back online to search some more and ran across your video, and this was what caused it! I'd removed the intake tube the day before to replace a bad PCV elbow under the throttle body, and that hard tube came out without me realizing it. Awesome! Thank you!

    Thank you! Check engine light came on the other day... got it checked, P0174 came up. Found your video and then found the hose had come loose just as you showed. Saved me a trip to a mechanic! Now to figure out how to reset the CEL.

    Thanks! Got the "check engine" about an hour after leaving the Jiffy Lube and took it back to them and they said it was Fuel Pump or Sensors and to see a mechanic. I wrote the codes down to do some research myself. After watching your video I went and checked my truck, because they had changes my air filter too and the hose was disconnected as you had stated. You might have saved me a bunch of $$$. Thanks for sharing this video.

    My OBD reader tossed that code at me this morning. I was kinda freaking because I did the timing with you literally. Put the motor back in yesterday. So I watched this video, the second you went to the air filter area I paused your video and went to the explorer. My air breather tube came disconnected somehow, I think because I usually don't tighten the clamps on the air hose sections. Old school, it was common but on this tech shit it very much affects the vehicle. Mine would just turn over this morning but wouldn't start. I connected the air housing and tightened down the hose clamps. Started right up, code went away all is good. Your saving my ass and again thank you for your four part timing videos. Couldn't have done it without you.

    I bought a 2004 Ranger FX4 which I absolutely love, but it keeps pulling these lean codes. It has a bunch of minor issues I figured were related to ignition, fuel, and vacuum leaks. So far, I replaced the whole intake manifold, OEM dealer part. Huge difference, no more vacuum leaks in that area, gobs more power. I also replaced the coil, plugs, wires (all OEM), MAF sensor, and two upstream O2 sensors. I seafoamed the crap out of the oil and fuel before changing the oil with full syn/WIX filter, and WIX fuel filter. Great. It's running much better, still not fixed. It was also stumbling really bad and misfiring on cylinder 2, which seems to have stopped after all these improvements. The only three things I've narrowed down the lean codes to are the possibility of low fuel pressure (bad fuel pump?), burned valve or cracked head, or *hopefully* this stupid PCV hose I overlooked. Mine has the clips on it, but both ends have O-rings. I really really hope it's the latter. Thanks for all your videos and demonstrations. They are absolutely invaluable, and I would hold you up as one of the best auto techs I've ever seen. I always recommend your channel to any Ford friends of mine. As a 7 time Ford owner, I wish I'd have discovered your videos years ago!

    Love this, takes me back to my day of 14 years ago. I think that's why I like your videos though. As an old drivability tech it makes me happy to see a guy take his time and do it right such as resetting the 12A650 (still remember some basics). I seen plenty of techs that would just clear codes and ship the thing down the road.

    I had a lean code on my 2003 Explorer Sport a couple months ago - fixed a cracked PCV elbow and was good to go. Drives great, no issues. About a week ago I got an oil change, and yesterday I got another lean code banks 1 and 2. Going to check and make sure they put everything back how they were supposed to before I go on to more troubleshooting. Thanks for the video!

    Thank you, I've been chasing this error for month now in my 02 Ford Ranger. I followed the advice from the folks at O'Reilly after they read code (fuel injector cleaner, change the fuel filter and clean the MAF) to no avail. After watching this video I traced the tube back and it was disconnected on the engine side of the metal tube. Problem solved.

    Nice. I have an '03 Ranger fx4 4.0 with only 65k miles (had it for 6 years now). Pretty much a garage queen, still black underneath with no rust at all, Ive managed to avoid getting it out in the salt and winter here. I recently had to replace the PCV tube due to these codes, easier to just buy the entire tube including the new rubber elbows...easy job. Besides the normal assortment of changing every fluid in it and some updates its a great little truck and thats the only thing I've had to really replace so far besides an A/C condenser, dryer, and oriface tube and typical maintenance items like shocks, brakes, ball joints, etc. You should show a video of replacing the timing chain tensioners/cassettes on one of these....fortunately mine is fine (I think they fixed it by '03) but I've helped do that job on an earlier model Explorer....might as well just go for a reman engine by the time you're done....what a horrible job. Thanks for the video!

    Would you happen to know the part number of the rubber part on the iac that the plastic hose plugs into at the other end? At 1:42, that plastic tube plugs into the iac. I can't find the part of this part anywhere. Mine is cracked and caused a vacuum leak. My vehicle is barely drivable due to this. 97 explorer xlt 4.0l sohc. Also, I'm guessing I have to remove the upper intake manifold to access this and that's ok with me because I need to replace my intake manifold gaskets anyway. I need this part first before I do those since it's a lot of work and I'd do this at the same time. Thanks

    I have a 06 Explorer 4.0 setting the 2195 2197 codes and replaced ECU because it was definitely bad setting 15 codes but it still idled like crap I replaced the egr no change replaced intake orings made it worse so I finally smoked it and smoke was pouring out the middle of intake on top about 1 inch from where EVAP hose plugs in apparently there is a crack in the plastic sprayed starting fluid around it and it reveved up and smooth idle I sprayed soapy water while smoke machine was on and it sounded like water boiling I don’t think the manifold is supposed to do that ? I’m patching for now while the new part arrives and hopefully fixes this rough idle huffing buffing idle 2 lean codes

    (No codes before)
    I pulled the engine replaced pan gasket and rear main seal. Reinstalled engine.
    Installed all new exhaust system.( y pipe cracked in half.) Did not do any thing with the exh manifolds.
    Now I get codes p1131 and p1151.
    The new y pipe o2 bung was aimed into the bell housing. And some wires got damaged on the o2 drivers side .
    I pulled off y pipe cut 1/2 way around the bung bent it away from the bell housing, rewelded it .
    Reinstalled with new 02 on drivers side.
    Found a vacume leak on the hose from the manifold to the egr.. trimmed and reinstalled it.
    Still getting the codes.
    Any ideas?
    O2 sensors are reused.

    Thanks Brian you know your stuff! I got a 04 Ranger with the same motor . It came in with no check engine light but a coolant leak at the thermostat housing at the block. Fixed that with out pulling the intake (2 sensor housing) . Came back with a light 171,174 lean codes. Smoked it and found vacuum leak at coolant heater for intake. Not sure what Ford calls it. Replaced Oring and smoked again . Found smoke coming from Egr valve and throttle body shaft. Another tech told me that the Egr leak is normal . Didn't replace or cleen throttle body. Smoked again and found no other leaks. Code back after clearing it. Ltft 25 and stft 15 to 8. Accelerate and stft comes down. Reset Kam and fuel trims look good. I spent alot of time trying to find the vac leak. I don't feel like it's fixed, I think it will be back. If it does what would you do next. I work in a shop where we aren't given time to verify the repair. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I hope I have given enough info. Thanks for your time Brian.

    1 problem on mine was someone had used an ilfitting piece of fuel line instead of the proper hosing for the iacv connection... Ltftb2 is still at about 14, and without finding any other leaks/etc. I'm wondering if the throttle cable needs adjusted... If not, I'm starting to look into fuel systems... I mean fuel line was used for air... Maybe I should look into fuel lines anyway....
    Gotta say though, the guys at midas have been great, not only working with me through the repairs, but even the price: quality ratio far exceeds just about everywhere else I've been.... Oddly, a better price than the chops had who done f'd it up in the....... Well, partially f'd it up, previous owner was horrible too, but yeah.... Shout-out to Dave, lance, and the guys at 2nd street midas in Ogden Utah though for sure

    They ALWAYS forget to reinstall that tube correctly, even on my 4.0L 02' Ford Ranger XLT. Now I remedy that every time I get my truck back from the repair shop, HERE's MY TIP TO YOU ALL; I pop open the hood and visually scan the engine and you wouldn't believe that stuff I found over the years like that tube not being connected, the oil filler cap not on after an oil change, tools left under the hood, no antifreeze added after the new water pump was install ... That top radiator hose had collapsed due to the pump pulling a suction on it is what stood out. But getting back to that disconnected tube, I also labeled that tube, "Don't forget to reconnect". Yeah, inspect under the hood after getting the engine serviced, like check the oil level and how clean the oil is after an oil change. I watched a mechanic walk out to my vehicle stall with 5 quarts of oil in a spouted oil can that he poured into my engine. Afterwards, my truck started to smell like burnt oil .., The guy poured in old oil into my engine and charged me new oil for it. I had to flush that old oil out before install new clean oil and filter at my expense. I mainly have a trusted mechanic now at a Ford Dealership that does the work I can't do. No more going to small repair shops, unless its for tires, battery or exhaust work, but I had a new muffler fall off the next day.

It's Showing the PO171 & PO174 codes ( too Lean ) But the engine is practically flooding.. the exhaust bout burns your eyes.. So It's burning really rich but showing a too lean code... Things i tried so far.. changed the fuel filter ( was really easy. no tools needed) Cleaned the MAF sensor , fuel pressure is about 60 PSI.. So now I am thinking either Bad Fuel pressure regulator or o2 sensors... I don't hear any vacuum leaks.. I checked everywhere i can think of.. I Might be some dumb, just not plumb dumb...lol, But this one has me stumped...Usually I can figure things out...

    remove (drivers side) bank 2 sensor 1 upstream 02 sensor, it only takes about 15 minutes max. If its packed with oil grime you can either soak it in white vinegar over night and use pressure air to blow it off or replace it with a cheap 02 sensor on amazon or eBay. then use spray clean your intake sensors with sensor cleaner. there's just three 02 sensors and two in the black air intake tube, so remain calm, you can quickly get your truck repaired

    FordTechMakuloco, I have the the same to lean codes on my 01 Ford Explorer Sport, 4.0, 6cly. I now have had a few vacuum hoses that needed to be replaced, replace the pcv valve, replace the fuel filter and I just spent quite a bit of money to replace my upper & lower intake gaskets. Still have the same 2 codes. I ordered a new MAF that will be arriving today. If that does not fix it, what else should I do or have done? I'm losing my mind here.

    I own a ford explorer and my check engine light is on. Had it checked and its exactly the same codes popping up. But I don't have the right equipment to check what you shown. I'm going to check for a vac leak and my PVC valve but if its not a part I can replace I will take it to a shop, but I'd rather not.
    Any thoughts?

    First i like to thank you for all your helpful videos ..i know you are busy and there is always stuff going on but i just wanted to pick your brain...i have 1992 explorer xlt 4.0L with 186,xxx miles on it...was getting a 121, 411 and 412 code..truck has rough idle..stumbles on acceleration and misses....when cold and you get it TO start it runs kinda smooth for bout 5 min and then its done with the smoothness...lol..got new fuel pump,filter,Maf,Tps,Iac,02,engine temp ,coil wires and plugs,new plenum and throttle body gaskets..rest the PCM like in your video...i still have a s small vac leak around the pcv tube but thats about it...could the Pcm be bad i hear older once had much problems
    with that...so any ideas for me what to look for next...??

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  9 лет назад +1

      What are your current codes? I would fix any and all vac leaks you think may be present like you said around the pcv and reevaluate. You say it starts fine and is ok smooth until it idles down that is when any vac leaks small or big will cause the idle issues explained.

    • @richardhoxworth944
      @richardhoxworth944 9 лет назад +1

      thanks for reminding me to recheck my codes once more...i figured i would get a check engine light if there was still something wrong...so after the reset of the pcm i did another KOEON test and this time it still had the 121(i think i know why) code and also 116..so i got a new ETC and now it running good again...has a slight stumble about half way into the throttle but i figured ..pcm reset takes some time and the lil vac leaks probably not helping things either...but so far so good...thanks for your input...keep up the good work

    • @richardhoxworth944
      @richardhoxworth944 9 лет назад +1

      So after i reset the pcm and drove the truck the check engine lite came on ...i drove the truck for 30 miles like you normally would. Light was still on when i parked the truck, so i tried to get the KOER codes but that was a no go , it would not let me do the WOT test or anything.So i did the KOEO test and i got 998 code which was not even on my code list and i had to hunt it down. So " Did not pass Key On Engine Off test yet (Get 111 in KOEO first)" is what i found, but on some Ford forum it was mentioned that 998 is a limp mode to get you home...so now i am confused cause i thought early vehicles like this 1992 Explorer 4.0L, with obd1 did not have the limp mode , more like 1998 models and after ...am i wrong?..what do i do now? on one hand i need to drive it more to get the KOER codes and on the other i am told to get it home...whats right?...As a pro Mechanic you probably dont have to much self doubt but man, i really second guessing all my decisions I am making on this thing...lol

      FordTechMakuloco Thank you so much for the response. We ended up taking the car in to a local mechanic & of all things, it turned out to be bad spark plug wires. So odd because they were replaced only a year ago & the mechanic confirmed they were of good quality & the same that he uses. Couldn't figure out why they would have gone bad but we're up and running again.

    I have the same thing going on right now, P0171 and P0174 error codes on my 99 Explorer XLT, rough idle etc. now the Idle feels rougher, the RPM's are not jumping around (Only at Cold Startup) it starts up to 2000, drops to about 1500 and then goes lower and wants to burp and sputter eventually dropping down to 500 it will kick back up to 1500RPM (or stall at this point) if it doesn't stall, it will go back up hover at 1500, drop to 1000, and then to it's idle at 800 RPM, once the vehicle reaches it operating temperature it starts to have a very rough idle, vibrations and everything. The other thing is, if I plug in the block heater overnight, the vehicle won't stall out or sputter in the morning, (used to only do that in negative temperatures) now It is doing it even when temperatures are positive.. forcing me to plug in just so I can have a smooth start up when heading to work. It happens just like I described every morning I've left it unplugged..
    So I have the Error Codes, Rough Starts and Rough Idle, definitely makes me think there is an Air Intake Leak. But why will it rough start in Warmer weather solved by plugging in the block heater.. seems odd enough. Any thoughts on this? So plugging it in solves the rough start (cold and warm weather) but the rough idle is persistent and error codes are always showing. I once had the error codes go away by removing and cleaning the Mass Airflow Sensor, but the rough idle was still present, months later the Codes returned and have been on since.
    I also noticed in your video that return hose from the engine block that was removed, I have removed mine before (cleaning the MAF sensor), didn't remember how it looked before I Pulled it out, I didn't get to see what it looked like when you plugged that one back in, there's a lip on the hose about 1/2 inch from the tip, is that supposed to be shoved inside the air intake hole or just snugged to the outside of the hole like mine currently is.. ?
    help on any of this would be greatly appreciated, this exploder is running rampant!

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  9 лет назад +1

      Ryan H That lip 1/2" in is where the hose should stop so yours sounds right. The reason the block heater makes it start better is the a/f ratio is different with warmer temp. If there isn't a vacuum hose leak then I would suspect intake gaskets are contracting cold and should be replaced.
