    Thank you so much! My 2002 Explorer would not run on its own while idling and found the problem in less than a minute of having the hood up. My elbow was disconnected from the hard tube. Popped it back on and put a hose clamp on it for now. You're the best!

    Well, You saved my ass again! 4 years ago I followed the 4 part video of timing chains in my 1998 Explorer 4.0 SOHC motor and its still going strong. Now I went back to your videos because I had the P0171 & P0174 codes. Been working on it for a week. Tried the relearn strategy, Still ran up and down. Watched your video and sure as shit that was the problem. Changed out the hose, Test drove it and no more racing engine or dying at a light. It was so bad that sometimes coming to a stop light the tranny would bang so hard. And yes I did do something stupid, I changed the IAC motor thinking that was the problem. Your the best!! Subscribed to you for 4+ years now!

    I had a rough idle in my 2003 Explorer. One of my best friends, who is a certified Ford mechanic, pulled the codes and insisted that it had a cracked intake manifold. After checking the video, I located the rubber elbow and sure enough.. It was the exact same split. Since it was a Sunday and I am 2 hrs from a parts store... I cut a piece of washing machine hose and Voila!!!! Fixed!!! I then disconnected the battery for 15mins and the Check Engine light reset itself. Thank you very much.. All is good again!!!!

    Changed out the valve gasket on my wife's 2008 Ford Fusion today. Did exactly what you said in your video, felt very confident. The job took me close to an hour. Took my time taking everything apart and cleaning/ inspecting. Waited for about 4 hours for the RTV to cure, then ran the engine to operating temp, found no leaks. Went for test drive and double checked the valve cover for leaks. Wonder how much a mechanic would charge me for this job! Excellent job on your video!

    Great tip. I've had my '03 SportTrac since '05....Pretty decent and dependable vehicle. Replaced this a couple of years ago. You're exactly right, from my experience dealing with mine, really just small components fail from regular wear and tear. The most annoying things were the emergency fuel shut off, and that darn t-stat housing (X3), With regular maintenance the hard stuff been held at bay so I've been happy. My wife just bought a '14 Explorer 3.5 V6. We'll be lucky if it's any where near as good of a vehicle.

    Here is one on this problem that no one that I have watched covered. I had rough idle a PO171 code and stalling when put in gear, I check every sensor looked high and low for a vac leak watched over a dozen video and could not find my problem. everything checked out as good final we figure it out a clogged fuel filter was not allowing enough fuel to get to the engine a long day of pulling out our hair ended with the very simple and cheap fix of a new fuel filter. The one important lesson I learned was start with the basics and branch out from there.

    I have an '03 Sport Trac, My truck was wanting to die while sitting at idle for a long time. I came across your video, while searching for how to change the O2 sensors. I went and checked the elbow, and low and behold, the elbow had a split in it. The only thing I was hoping for in this video is showing the exact placement of the complete hose, removal and install. This video just saved me $300. Mechanic didn't even check the elbow, just went by the codes and insisted it was the O2 sensors.

    Thank you very much for this info. I have a similar setup on my 2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L. One design I don't like is how the PCV has to be mounted to at port at the end of the Left Valve Cover. A Mechanic had cracked that PCV mounting port off the valve cover and it cost me plenty to have that valve cover replaced.
    So, for me that PCV can be very costly to changeout, if I have to change the valve cover too. I changed lots of PCV valve, but I don't want to change this one.

    Encountered this exact same problem on my cousin's C5 Corvette. Very similar design, and it collapsed in the same way. Idle was hunting and rough, stalling occasionally. Was hard to find because the intake tube opening is pretty close to the throttle body on those and it masked the sound. Replaced the broken elbow with a scrap length of fuel line I had in the shop as a temporary fix. That was about a year ago. Still running fine that way.

    My 2003 Ranger 4.0 never had a rough idle just a sudden CEL for P0171 and P0174 lean codes. I checked my PCV elbows and didn't see any cracks or holes. I pulled the front elbow, the one in your video, and found a small hole on the underside. I replaced it with a elbow I had, cleaned the MAF and cleared the codes. I hope this fixes the issue.

    I recently bought a 96 explorer. It appears as though I either don't have the same elbow or I am struggling to find it. My engine scavenges at warm idle and I believe I hear a faint hissing, it also is throwing a P0133 code. Tried spraying carb cleaner around the entire intake manifold and vacuum lines and didn't detect any change in idle. Any help or ideas would be great! Thanks.

    Thank you Brian, With 2003 Sport Trac V6 4.0L what must I do to re-tune or adapt for flex-fuel...?? By "flex fuel" I mean using any combination of Gasoline, E10, E15, E30, E50, E85, or pure straight ethanol....{in a just pump and go fashion}.
    Since or local stations now put in random amount of ethanol I never really know what I am running.. E85 might be E50 .. Pure Gasoline does not really exist at most stations in Missouri {due to government mandate to add ethanol/alcohol}.

    Another reason it could be hunting for idle other then PVC or TPS or IAC on cold starts is the Timing chain tensioners, there are 2 of them an upper and lower..this was my case.

    Hi. I have a 2000 Mercury mountianeer 4.0 soho engine. I have a pretty rough idle. No DTCs. Fuel trims are ok, long term is adding a little more than normal. I checked my pcv and it's not leaking. My PCv is in a different location than this video though. Any thing common with these? Sort of hunts. Only rough at idle. Minor contribution hits on most cylinders.

    I have a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer and I just replaced the thermostat housing and the intake manifold gaskets. Now that it is all back together it I am having a very rough idle/misfire. I took the intake back off to investigate and there is now oil in my intake at one of my cylinders. Could this oil be caused by a manifold leak, which would be causing the misfire/very rough idle? Tricks on getting the intake manifold to seat well? thank you

    I have a, 07 explorer, 4X4, 4.0L with just over 80,000 miles, that runs rough idle and dies after I have driven her for a while gotten her up to running temperature and shut her off, resting for 2 - 30 minutes and then try to restart her. I have changed my throttle body, MAF, intake manifold gaskets, (caused they leaked) and still have the same issue. Codes come up with a p1000, but that is no big deal, and had a B1676 error pop up, but I do not know if that has anything to do with the engine running rough, I have no idea. The only thing I can think of after this is spark and fuel. According to my scanner my fuel is now with in normal range, which leaves spark. I was thinking about changing out my ignition system, Spark plug wires and spark plugs.
    What do you think.

    Hey Brian, I am most likey off topic here, but I'd like to know how to get a good front end alignment, repair/replace child door locks and headlight alignment. was given 2000 explorer XLT. You could say a rolling dumpster, it was and still is in need of a lot of TLC. Yesterday the engine ran erratically, and died when wife drove to work. She thought it may have been overheated. She added 50/50 mix antifreeze and it appears to be ok. However, after viewing video, I will check that tomorrow. I am unable to drive, and apprehensively must ride in it to Dr.office. It seems squirrly on the road, one slight overcorrection scares me a bit, much like a willis army jeep. Is this because of the wheelbase being short or incorrect tire size? All 4 are the same, just smaller. Thanks for videos, and your time/expertise.

    I just did a top end job on my '99 Explorer 4.0L SOHC (heads replaced, every gasket and o-ring, timing cassettes, tensioners, chains and sprockets, etc.) and now my brake booster is leaking vacuum. It's running rough at idle, but no codes. Whenever I disconnect the line running to the booster and put my finger over it, the engine continues to run rough. I did have 90 psi compression on #1 cylinder, but I believe it was a stuck ring. Compression is now around 150+, so I know it isn't that. I haven't checked the PCV yet, so I'm going to give that a shot next.
    Any tips on what else can be causing that?

    gotta 98 ranger 4.0 been babied and is mint 100k miles, I just started getting 171 174, checked pcv valve hose fine, I smoke tested , sprayed brake clean, and tried propane when cold and warm and no change to engine speed but short and long trim stay in 25% range when I take it and and give it gas long term dives to zero. Fuel pressure 65psi, new fuel filter
    I dont want to change intake gaskets Unless I have sure reason to. Or is that the only option for vacuum leak in this engine, Maf reads fine, and so do O2 sensors, no exhaust leaks, what would you try next.Your the best on the net!

    Would this be the cause for rough idle on a 4.0L 2010 Ford Ranger XLT?

    I have a 1998 Explorer 4.0sohc and on cold starts the RPMs go up and down. This only happens for about 30sec and then stops. I checked the PCV, it looks fine. Any other ideas ?

    Really enjoying your videos. Ive got a 2006 4.0 explorer with rough idle as well as when cruising at around 1400 to 1700 rpm the engine feels like it misses which is an annoying uneven ride and no problems when foot down on the gas. Could this be a vacuum issue??

      @FordTechMakuloco  9 лет назад +1

      Paul Seaman No once your at speed the vacuum leaks are null you have a secondary ignition fault causing the misfire.

    I have a v6 05 mustang, is it possible this is where my coolant leak is coming from? It's hissing in the gap right in between the two rows of cylinders. I'd really appreciate a professional opinion seeing as I'm a broke college student who loves working on my car :)

    Is this common in Ford Rangers? I have 02 Ford Ranger Edge at 17000 miles. It idles rough and dies sometimes or won't start at all.

    I have a 04 explorer with a 4.0 v6. Service engine soon codes are "p0171 bank 1 system too lean" and "p0174 bank 2 system too lean". I already replaced the two upstream O2 sensors and still have the codes. The motor idles fine and does not appear to be running rough at all. Before I got these two codes i did have an egr valve code and replaced the egr valve. That code has not come back since. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    Had this same thing on a 99 3.0 dohc taurus.
    I have the same question, I have a rattle (sometimes) in my 04 explorer 4.0 but I think its the starter hanging up? Can sit for weeks and not do it so it can't be a tensioner leakdown.

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  9 лет назад

      iamherenotheretobe Yeah the rattle would be after sitting so you are wise to look elsewhere.

    I have a 98 explore sport I ran it outta gas and now when I start it up it idle really low and dies all the time so I went and the codes Read and it was reading the po171 and po174 can you kinda walk me threw on how too fix it?

  • @carmineginocchio7783

    Ok, so, I've got 4.0 SOHC... 03 Explorer. I get a jerking idle... And a jerk or a buck (sometimes multiple) at sustained throttle. Acceleration is no problem, doesn't feel like its lagging so I'm leaning away from plugs... But its a sudden jerk and dip on the tach at idle, then resumes normally for a bit, then a jerk that only takes me down maaaybe 100rpm...
    Weird thing is, No check engine light (dash bulb works, as it turns on when I turn my car on), and the engine wasn't throwing any codes.
    Possible PCV? or o2 sensor throwing off air/fuel?

    Hey FTM does this apply to the 06 Explorer with the 4.0 as well? Having a random misfire on all of bank 2 and a bunch of other seemingly all related issues (02’s stuck rich/lean etc). Truck runs rough when pulling out from a stop or pulling up a hill but at a higher rpm/speed it’s running fairly well. Only 117k on the truck but this ones quite frustrating to track down for me.

    I've cleared my lean codes 171 and 174 using bluetooth OBDII scanner and Torque Android app. How do you reset the PCM computer you mentioned in the video so it relearns the fuel trims, etc? Thanks!

    Great tips. Question for you I had a 2010 F150 in my shop the other day with a p0130 and a P0150 I found it odd that I would get codes for both 02 sensors I was going to replace them but customer didn't want to spend over 500 bucks on 2 sensors, I read in a forum that there is a TSB for that truck and could take it to the dealer and download a update to make the ECM less sensitive, can you tell me if that's true? I called my local dealer and they wouldn't say, They told me to bring it in for a 90 doller diagnostic and programing is extra

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  9 лет назад

      JOHN HUFNAGEL Yes there is a pcm update that will likely be covered under emissions warranty for him for just this issue, have done many.
