Today I'm taking a look at Manhunt 2, while not as good as the original. I think this game is much better then others give it credit.

Fun fact:Manhunt 2 is the final game in the 3D Rockstar Universe timeline taking place in either 2007 or 2012
Where did 2007 came from? There is no in game evidence to suggest this date other than people saying it is 2007 because it came out that year.

@@spiderfanmaniac9783 the game came out in 07 and theres flashback missions that say that take place 6 years ago which wasn’t in the earlier versions and has a billboard in the flash back that mentions 2006 but is mostlikely a missplaced asset
@@rangerv1 There is no evidence for that. The game is mostly set in 2012. And the 6 years ago sign has 2006 therefore it is set in 2012. Also if you see the manual for Manhunt 2 the date 29 May 2006 is stated.

@@checkmate5336 if I'm being honest, I didn't know that when I first rented the games back in the mid-2000s. I only found out in the last couple of years when I returned to the Manhunt franchise
Which in my opinion makes the health pickups unnecessary. I love it when games find ways to restore health which go hands-in-hands with the primary gameplay.
@@checkmate5336I honestly cannot remember if it is ever mentioned in the game itself. I played the whole thing and watched multiple playthroughs yet never knew this until now. Maybe I am just really unobservant. That's probably it tbh.
Honestly, I'm so thankful the media got it out of their heads that 'video game' doesn't mean 'for kids', and that a violent video game is no different than a violent horror movie, hell, all of the media coverage on this game thrived on its violence, as so many of those articles preyed on the little amount of understanding that parents had of video games.
As a reminder: the media does not care for you, it only cares for what gets it attention

Fun fact: Very recently Manhunt 2 version 0.01 beta (PSP variation) has surfaced online on the Internet Archive, it was some kind of early pre production PSP UMD disc that somebody got and uploaded the Iso on the web! This version has a lot of interesting differences to the final game and even to the PS2 beta leaked version (as this new PSP version leak is earlier version then the PS2 leak)
Hey there, bit of a correction. The game was a joint effort between Rockstar North and Vienna. I had spoken with one of the developers and they had revealed to me that Rockstar North provided the story and plot, writing and producing the cutscenes. While the team built the game with the story and plot they provided. The game originally targeted the PS2 and Original XBOX, and was designed to be as high quality looking as possible within those limitations. About 13 cutscenes were removed, alongside a handful of chapters and two distinct ending sections. (the final levels we got were never intended to be the finale at Vienna) Most of what you see in the final game is effectively the original level order shuffled around and the story recontextualized. It's almost like a lobotomized version of itself. It's largely assumed the reason they cut so many of this stuff was to get the game to fit on the PSP, which was one of the first things they did once Vienna closed. One thing I can say about the original Vienna plot is that there were no flashback sections. They were all supposed to take place in the present and be a continuous story, just like the first Manhunt. They seem to solely exist in the final game to justify them with new context as they changed them.
Chale would have been better if it was also on the classic Xbox, too bad it was canceled
Edit: It would have been better if they had played another album so that at least we had some complete levels.
Just curious if what you say is true:
1) Was the Project basically part of the CIA? (and why was it recontextualized to be some-links-to-CIA-but-a-corporate-conspiracy-deal? Possibly TakeTwo didn't like the implied Anti-CIA message of the original plot?)
2) Were the "Project Militia" (since I doubt they were called that before the story rewrite) supposed to be linked to the Cerberus from the first game or just a visual reference? (Not forgetting that their original concept was to be the elite black-ops military types vs the Watch Dogs obvious Men-in-Black role)
3) Was Co-Op originally a vision for the game judging by the two protagonists?
4) Was the older version of the final story concept supposed to be set in the 1980s? There's rumours floating around that the original story was set in the 80s instead of the 2000s, especially judging from stuff like the gun models used, links to CIA operations at the time, most of the vehicles being pre-90s models apart from the Kuruma)
@@Steelion69 The project may have been a part of the CIA at one point. We don't really know though, they could have been dropped when they made the switch from Frisbee to Leo. I think the Project Militia is just meant to be a nod to Cerberus visually, they could've had a different name though. And no, there was no co-op, Leo was designed as a director stand-in. He was actually meant to be visually seen earlier on (running around being physically present to give the illusion he's a real person) but co-op was never in the cards from what I can gather. Manhunt 2 even at Vienna always revolved around the idea of a "mental issue" whether that was Leo or Frisbee. It's possible the game took place in the 80s but it could just be that there was just some disconnect between the artists at Vienna and the writers at R* North back then. But I think that would make the most sense given a lot of the environmental design in the game seeming out of place for what's supposed to be set in the mid to late 2000s
I'm only a couple minutes in, but I am glad we have a super real, very much present friend like Leo to absolutely help us out.

@@MrDmoney156 Then again I thought back to it and there was a episode of Invader Zim brought up in a murder trial but besides that it does seem video games get more blame than the crap we see on tv and movies. Not just only that but even Books/Comics have a dark side but not many people bat an eye like they do over these games.
with movies u are merely an observer whereas with video games YOU are the one committing these horrific acts. i love manhunt too but there’s a clear difference between violent movies and violent video games

I remember really enjoying the first few levels of this game before it completely fell apart when guns were introduced.
Personally for me I find Manhunt II was a good game yeah I know for Rockstar It was far from a good game and many other people prefer the first manhunt and I am one of the people that loves the first manhunt but I dunno there's something entertaining and fun about Manhunt 2 for me where it be the brutal murders or the twisted atmosphere similar to The Evil Within. I've always been a sucker for messed up horror games and that's why I probably like it. Coming as a person who loves horror games especially unique ans original ones it is a wonderful game for me personally.

I remember playing this game on psp and I thought it was alright but at the same time its crazy how this game despite being gruesomely tame never saw the light of day because of one case that was unrelated to the game.
Manhunt has such an interesting concept. It would be a shame if they never made a third game.
I had an idea where it could centered around cartels and border towns in the southwest. I would return to the snuff angle from the first game.
My idea is that it centers around a woman that eats her eyeball during her trial and the gameplay takes place over a 12 hour timeline

You could cover the first two gta games. Me and most people have only played the games in 3d so we don't know what happened in the first two, but are curious about it. Almost nobody else covers this topic so the views will probably be there, while also being a great retrospective because it would be interesting to know where stuff came from and how its different from what we know today, like some cities or mechanics like the police system. It could also be really interesting to see what the story is about and how it works, if there even is one.

The absurd amount of red melee weapons in this game really show how important it was for the baseball bat (and chainsaw, but that comes so late it doesn't matter) to be the only one in the original. They're so broken, it makes running through the game beating everyone to death easy af

I really like the first game, so i went to second with some hype, but, like the name of video mentions, Manhunt 2 had so much wasted potential. While some people enjoy it, i personally dont find it fun and any reason to return soon, since its pretty much the same as previous game, story was just mid (i find the lack of big story and simplicity of first game much more enjoyable), and the gore/executions, a major thing and controversy of the game, were never a reason i played Manhunt games, so them being the biggest update from first game was only a welcome addition. I can say that i only really enjoyed the introduction enviromental executions and a much bigger variety of weapons.
I wish there could be a third game, but i suppose it is for the better of franchise to be left as it is.

Before watching this video, I want to say this game was one of Rockstars trickiest to make, they clearly had either too many visions for it or or none that they thought was good enough, in my opinion this game should have been cancelled and maybe renter development alongside max Payne 3 in 7th gen, it would have been given not only more time but the team more focus on shaping is just right, because I think the premise of mk ultra and the old aesthetic of the game is actually good, and shouldn't be changed, and the characters, at least Leo and Danny are very good given the material they had to work with, Leo especially, anyone else would have sounded like an endgy pro cod gamer with those lines but he pulled it off

Yes, but Mortal Kombat has a different tone. Manhunt (the og) is a bleak, disturbing fucked up game, while MK is more like fun for kids. Mortal Kombat used to be similar to Manhunt but it lost its edge.

I totally agree about the shooting segments between both games. I found them to be such a swamp to trot through. The shooting mechanics are both very dated for 2024 play throughs. In Manhunt 1 there was less, but it really just felt like trading shots with the enemy and just very boring. I feel it’s even worse in 2 just because it’s most of the game. I waited so many years to finally play manhunt 2 and it really disappointed me. I still had a little fun in a few of the stealth missions though. Danny and Leo were pretty cool too I thought.

Would of worked so much better to continue the story from the first one.
I agree, let's call people who blame media for causing murders idiots. But can we also note that depicting casual murder at least desentisizes to a degree and is not a great picture of the world to give a developing kid who has a lifetime of it ahead. You don't have to disown your parents to be able to admit they may not have been the perfect examples for letting you do whatever.

Manhunt 2 is underrated. I loved the game, except that it feels too short when running through it.

Personally, the biggest issue for me is the story too. The thing is, contrary to other people, I actually LOVE the MK Ultra story setup for this game almost as much as the entire snuff aspect of the first game since I don't see it being used that much at all. Manhunt II could have been SO good if they had a better time developing the game without all of the scrapping of content and whatnot. Danny and Leo are characters I really like, and I think that if the game had done more to devlop them properly and had more focus in regards to its story and locations, without any seemingly random bullshit happening and the enemy factions being so goofy and out of place a large part of the time, this could have worked really well.

This was actually kinda the original indev plot of Manhunt 2. In pre-alpha the story was about James Earl Cash from the first game, so traumatized he goes out on killing sprees because he imagines he's still being hunted. Weirdly instead of Leo, Cash had a hand puppet named Frisbee to replace the director.

Manhunt 2 is an amazing game!
I actually enjoyed tf outta Manhunt 2, it’s if Clockwork Orange and Fight Club had a baby. Sure it’s not without its issues, but if they ever make a 3rd party 1/6 scale figures of Leo Kasper and Daniel Lamb, I’d buy them in a heartbeat.

This game doesn't deserve the hate it receives. The PSP version is genuinely fantastic.
I think like how manhunt 1 gives a glimpse at the darker side of hollywood I think man hunt 2 should have done the same and just made Leo and Danny just one out of many in a long list of messed up stuff that has been tried by by the project

Live in a border town, and there’s this big market that sells a lot of chinese goods at one of the ports of entries and my grandma use to buy us games from one of the vendors there and one day I was with her and she let me pick out any game so I got manhunt 2 for psp.. it was a bootleg AO copy 😂 I didn’t realize this until years later when I was watching videos like this and saw the difference between the awful M rated version and the AO version
