They played a shorter version on the radio but played the long version at the club.
This must have been a dream come true for the DJs who actually played the full 14 minutes version .. Put it on, go out for a bite to eat and a few drinks, then come back and put on the next record .. Nice work if you can get it ! 😉
Fun fact: this song was done in ONE TAKE!!! The group didn't know what to do when they were recording in the studio, so the producers told them to go in order (first Wonder Mike, then Big Bank Hank, then Master Gee, then back to Wonder Mike and so forth) and to just keep going
I never even knew there was a long version! Those that memorized the lyrics probably only did the radio edit version.

In the club I usually went to back then, the dj would play the 14 minute version every night. Much to the dislike of the owner of the place, who didn't want ppl to be on the dancefloor too long. When they were dancing, they weren't ordering drinks :-)
And yes. We all knew the lyrics.... Still do.

Hi Dani, it was great to here this full length version again after so many years, and I can honestly say that back in the day I did know all of the lyrics, but I did struggle last to your reaction video. But this song was such an important ground breaking piece of music back then, it had so many firsts, it was the first 12” single to be over 12 minutes long, it was the first (and still for me the best) Rap song, it was along one of the first songs to have sampled the the bass line from Nile Rodgers and Chic “Good Times”. For me living in the uk, id just stated collecting music in 1978, and the 12” Single had just came out as a new media format, and Rappers delight was my 2nd ever 12” Single that I bought, and I was lucky to own a copy because it was sold out every where, but it wasn't radio-friendly so it was learnt by people playing in repeatedly due to that fact it was the only song you owned back then, so I guess you

Hey Boogie Dani I use to play this at the club Trader Charlie's when this song came out in 79. Everyone would yell Hotel Motel Holiday Inn because the club was at Holiday Inn the rooftop Lounge. Miss those fun days. Have fun Later!

Thanks Dani for reacting to my request, The Shorter version they played on Radio was about 7 Mins. The 7 Mins version was the one everyone memorized and it was at parties school dances etc where the DJs would play the full 14 min version.
Its on my playlist. The song gets you where you need to go.
In Houston we had Album side Monday. Loved it when they played this.
We used to sing this on the school bus to and from and drive the poor bus driver crazy 😂. The short version.

You should've watched the music video. It's fun. However, it's also fun to experience the whole 14-minute song too.
I seriously doubt people knew the complete lyrics to the 14-minute version, the version on MTV was shorter and people know that one.

In Disco and the first rap pretty much that I listened to and liked and could dance to and because it was a long song you didn't listen to the words a lot most of the time you just listen to the beat and I went on and on the beat don't stop until the break at all and that's the way it was when I was younger not the way it is now. As long as you keep playing the good things like this content I guess and you going to get me listening and liking it all the way and on and on and on LOL
