9:30 can we all just take a moment to appreciate that a whole verse of this song is solely devoted to a time he didn’t like the food his friend made, not only that, but there weren’t any hard feelings.

I am now 62 years old. This takes the number one spot for my all time favourites. It is still genius. If only the younger people could appreciate the artistic work and appreciate how it created a musical genre where many of today's artists derive the essence of the stuff they are manufacturing. Rappers Delight was the epitome and pure genius. I still can't get enough of it all these years later.

This song is where the term "Hip-Hop" came from. People had never heard music where they spoke instead of sing and would come in to record stores not knowing the name of the song. So they asked for the "hip-hop" song.

And from the time I was only six years old
I never forgot what I was told
It was the best advice that I ever had
It came from my wise dear old dad
He said, "Sit down, punk, I wanna talk to you
And don't say a word until I'm through
Now, there's a time to laugh, a time to cry
A time to live and a time to die
A time to break and a time to chill
To act civilized or act real ill
But whatever ya do in your lifetime
Y'never let a MC steal your rhyme!"

MAN! This song right here, from the first beat, it takes me back to my T.T's house. We all seating in the kitchen and my older cousin come running in the house, holding this album in the air, she ran past us and straight to the huge record player my T.T had in her living room. Man, I tell you the truth, it was love from the first note for us. We played that record at least 20, 30 times before T.T stopped us from playing it again. We would have warn the grooves off that album if she didnt stop us. It was the very first time any of us ever heard rap before. A totally new music style, something never done before. Im from a small town. We didnt live in NY or have any family that lived there, so we didnt see the birth of hip hop in our streets and school yards. This album was our introduction into hip hop. This Album is and will always be, FOR ME, the most important and greatest rap album ever released. It will be played at every family reunion, wedding, anniversary, cook out, and family gathering for all time. Its the best.

According to drunk history, there was a time where rap wasn't really structured like a song. If you've ever tried to freestyle without "training" you don't naturally do the whole verse, chorus, verse, chorus thing. At least I never did, and that's why I believe it.
When you just freestyle rap for fun, it can just be like an hour long chorus. Just a never ending string of rhymes, that follow the music, and are on beat. Not nonsense either, it has to all make sense. It feels kind of gross to repeat a rhyme, AKA a chorus. So I never naturally did it.

41 years later, this is still the best hip hop lyrics of them all.
It was twelve o'clock one Friday night
I was rockin' to the beat and feelin' all right
Everybody was dancin' on the floor
Doin' all the things they never did before
And then this fly, fly girl with a sexy lean
She came into the bar, she came into the scene
As she traveled deeper inside the room
All the fellas checked out her white sasoons
She came up to the table, looked into my eyes
Then she turned around and shook her behind
So I said to myself, "It's time for me to release
My vicious rhyme I call my masterpiece"

Guess what guys. Im 18 and a couple of weeks ago my school had an music show. And the plan was that i where going to rap THIS song. You know what the worst part was? not that this song is 14 min long, but that then i still had braces. Imagine, an asian (living in sweden) guy with no experiance from rapping at all who where going to rap to one of the hardest rap song ever with *braces*!!!

I coached a group of kids from the time they were ~10 yrs.of age through high school in rec & church basketball. They were predominantly composed of the young un-coordinated boys that none of the coaches wanted. Year-after-year I would keep them together on the same team. As they grew older they became Very Good. So GOOD at basketball and respectful young men that we would travel to play in Tournaments that I would, at times, be the only adult.
The last tournament that we all fit in the one van we travelled to ... they were playing modern rap songs while attempting to creat their own. I had them stream "Rappers Delight" and to their amazement, they were astounded at the mastery of the poetic rhyming to-the-beat, and that the Coach knew all the lyrics.
Well, that's when their poetic juices conjealed and they were looking at their rapping with a higher perspective that got them creating their own respectful rap songs, and moving-to-the-beat on the Court with a new swag that had opposing coaches approaching me to take out my two "Big Men" so that their players could approach "The Paint." We seldom had more than seven or eight players. I did not accomodate their requests. The TEAM nearly won their last Rec Championship. Lost by two-points.
They went on to colleges. and came back in their college years with Tournaments that they would drive to play in. inviting me to coach.
"Rappers Delight" would be streamed in their travels, and has been part of their "go-to" songs ever since.
The Team eventually grew into becoming The TITANS.

color televisions were a novelty even in the 70's. Many programs weren't broadcasted in full color until the early 70s. Black and white televisions outsold color televisions until the 70s. They were expensive and the Rappers were from poor areas. This song was pinned and released in the 70's. The moron that said this rap is from 1980 is just ignorant and trolling or just a sucka mc.
Don't hate on the hip hop classics. You heard it from me cause I am dr. fantastic. I go on and on and on and on and on, spit knowledge past the break of dawn. yeah, I don't stop y'all, cause word is bond.

Everything was either a surprise or a disappointment. We had headphones but soft arc mini speakers that sat directly on the ears so they could be quite uncomfortable. And not noise canceling in the least.

There are more than three thousand words in this tune, and I know them all word-for-word. When I say word-for-word I mean words, inflections and emphasis that each rapper uses. My favourite rapper of the three is Master Gee, listen to him very carefully, he does not stop rapping, he takes his breaths between words (if you listen very carefully, you can actually hear him drawing his breaths). I can match him breath-for-breath through his freestylelye routines. Spent the best part of my life mastering this feat (from 66 to this very day lol). Not really 66, more like 72, but I lifted it from the song in Big Bank Hank's final stanza. There is also an other version of this full length version that does not have the mini-break right at the end, that is the version that I have mastered.
