  • COMING UP… one of the coolest stories you’ll ever hear about a #1 song… First of all the singer Brad Arnold wrote it when he was 15 in math class in about 10 minutes. Then he begged his local radio station to play it and then it was the most requested song on the station for months… then a few months later they were playing next to the giants of rocks… The story of Kryptonite by 3 Doors Down is so unbelievable you’ll think they made it up! The song went #1 on 3 different charts. Next this band tells the amazing story and I’ll tell you if you aren’t a fan You will be after this interview. Two of the nicest guys in all of music. Here’s the story of song that has sold 5 million copies and been streamed over a billion times!

My Dad was aging when I first happened to see this video. He lifted weights til nearly the end, taking great care in his health and appearance. He fought a long bearded biker in my defence and honour when he was in his late 50’s. My literal Superman, then, and throughout all of my life. When I saw this video, the character WAS my father. Always caring for the underdog, he would stand up for them. Even in his 80’s. Long passed now, tears still flow when I hear Kryptonite. I am proud to say I became HIS Superman. Caring for him until the end. This one’s for you Daddy. Forever. 💙

Everyone expected you to be a superman, but there are times when the world just turns its back on you, and when you backle under the pressure, it is as if everyone looks down on you in disappointment. This song will always be that corner stone to lean on. Awesome channel love it.

I'm old too, but I still have my ear out for new music that's good. I hate sounding like an old fart, but the new music on the charts today rarely moves me. I do still find good new music, it just isn't found in the top 40 these days.
"Kryptonite" certainly caught my attention when it came out, even though 2000 was a particularly rough time; my mom died and I was working 2 jobs and getting my house ready to sell so I could move 1500 miles away before my stalker got out of prison in 2001.
Driving to work was the only time I got to enjoy listening to music, and this always caused me to crank the volume to feel that awesome drum beat.
Like the songwriter, I was the youngest kid in my family and my two sisters were old enough to be my moms. One sister went off to college when I was five and she put all her Beatles 45s in the trash, and I quickly retrieved them. I had a turntable/speakers in a suitcase box that I played children's records on, but those Beatle records found a new home there. I also got my older brother's 45s when he got tired of them. When I was 10, I bought my first record with my lunch allowance, a song I loved so much I skipped lunch at school to save money to buy the single. It was Don McLean's "American Pie".
When I was 11, my big Christmas gift was a Montgomery Ward stereo component system, it was AM/FM, played 8-tracks, and had a separate Garrard turntable and some decent speakers. I was so happy, I cried! Both of my parents loved music, and dad was a radio/microwave engineer. He also gave me a set of headphones that were professional quality, huge heavy things that gave me my own private world to enjoy music. I had to lie down to listen to those things, so heavy my neck hurt otherwise!
I got my first job at 15, and almost all my earnings went to buying records.
This is why I love this channel so much, and feel kinship with Adam, The Professor. Like him, music has always been a huge part of my life, and always will be until I die.
If I have a funeral, I want to go out to this Harry Nilsson song! 😁

Their faces when they acknowledge their first tour would be as an opening act for Creed, when Creed was at their Prime, it shows how down to earth these guys are. Like Bon Jovi did, sometimes you have to ask the guy who play the songs to give you a space. I'm glad he did it!

The date was September 15, 2001. Just days after 9/11. People going to the 106.5 The End Weenie Roast including the bands and crew themselves weren’t sure if the show would go on. Some bands were missing members, equipment, or both. Somehow a festival still happened and I was right up front for 3 Doors Down, The Crystal Method, and others. The set by 3 Doors Down was amazing and helped a lot of folks still reeling from what recently happened to enjoy something positive and entertaining.

I remember liking all their songs. That was rare. We played Kryptonite in our cover band. Our drummer never got that intro right, God bless him.

My youngest son and I sang Kryptonite in a Karaoke session with a live band playing the music on the large stage of a cruise ship in front of several hundred people. He was around 8 or 9 and he was always real shy but he wanted to do this. I didn't realize it but he did not know that we had a huge (to him) crowd watching us because the lights were shining in his eyes and blurring his view of everyone past my wife and oldest son in the front row. When we finished the song, the crowd went nuts and gave him a standing ovation and that is when he noticed the crowd. He put his hands in his pockets, lowered his head and eyes, and made a bee line to his seat. Even though he got embarrassed, that is one of my most favorite moments with my son. Singing a song we both loved and watching him dance around in front of me while singing to several hundred spectators (unbeknownst to him). Great memory that includes a great song!

The creator said something along the lines of 3 hit songs about superman meant the world was ready for superheros again. Thanks to this song, dozens of movies have been made, actors discovered and millions made. All because a 15 yr old wrote a song and had to the courage to keep trying.

When I was first dating the lady that later became my wife, we went to this bar in Pascagoula to hear this supposedly up and coming band. They were making some noise on the local level and we decided to make the drive. They tore the roof off that joint that night and I told my girl that these guys are super stars and they are going to be famous. I recall them playing Kryptonite that night and thinking something like, "DAMN! That's a monster hit" .
When the album was released and that song rocketed up the charts, I felt like I had discovered them myself. It was a great night all the way round for me, and the memory of it, while fading now, is still quite special. Oddly enough, it's the only time I've seen 3 Doors Down live and after all these years, I think I got the best show from them I could possibly have gotten.

Living in the New Orleans area, it was really cool at the time seeing these nice, near-local guys make it big. Near-local because NOLA and the MS Gulf Coast are pretty tied into each other. I thought I remembered Kryptonite was the number one song of all 2000, but 3 is excellent too. Thanks for the “rest of the story!”
I don’t have a problem with you doing more 90’s and early post-90’s. You are in my book the GenX music guy. Well, the 90’s and early 2000’s was when our generation was actually MAKING the music, not just listening to the 70’s and 80’s soundtrack we grew up with. So covering these artists is still in keeping with our generation.

  • @freez092also

Johnny Rzeznik nailed it when he said that he couldn't take credit for his amazing accomplishments (although many artists should be that humble!!) and that the Universe has all sorts of creative energy and ideas flying around at any given time.. and as creative beings, when we happen to be tuned to a particular frequency or energy, we happen to intercept and receive that idea like an antenna.... then it is up to us what to do with it!
My solid memory of this song was in around summer of 2000 when I was engineering and producing a metal style band (Black Sabbath/MegaDeth sound) and the lead singer came into the studio and said, "Man!! Have you heard that new Kryptonite song on the radio!??? That's what I want to sound like!" When I heard it, I remember the genius of how it captures the retro metal chord structure (Crazy Train main riff) and flavors, but also had the delicious new sonic approach to drums, guitars and vocals!!
3 Doors Down ruled radio for at least 5 years
