lophocereus schottii (Totem Pole Cactus) after being chopped

- I finally have an update on my Lophocereus schottii!! It has been 7.5 months since propagation & this is how the bebes are looking. They all finally began showing new growth around the 6 month mark, so it has been a long wait. Definitely a slow plant to root/grow. Even though it has taken a while, the propagation has been successful yay!!

Thank you so much for watching! If there are any videos (Rare Online HousePlant Unboxings, More Plant Tours, Specific Plant Care) you would like to see please let me know :).
When I chop my big cactuses, I let them callus over for a couple weeks then I stake them up in pots and water them regularly. They usually put out roots and new growth in a couple months. Full sun and keeping them very stable helps, I use four stakes around each one to give them support.
nice greenery in background.
This helps a lot!! Next time around I will try your way. Cut rooting time in half
Ty ☺️
Good advice. The only thing I would say that I do differently is to moderate the sun a bit, and water only lightly - ever more than enough to barely dampen the soil.
Yes, I only leave them in full sun for half the day and only if the mother plant was conditioned to be in full sun and the potting media is very well draining.
So glad they're doing well. You definitely have to have patience with these cacti.
So much patience!
Yay, it rooted! I didn't know propogation was a thing until I rooted a cactus accidentally. I kocked off a piece of my opuntia and put it in the soil because I felt bad throwing it away and eventually it started growing! Quite a magical moment when I noticed.
Ahhh I can only imagine!! How exciting!! An accidental new plant is such an amazing surprise 😍
Erika. I don't know if you have experienced this, but I have three Totem Poles, and one got splits. I remember I had given it an extra amount of water once, which it apparently wasn't used to. The sides split open. I read up on it, and it is a condition that happens when you deviate from its usual amount of water and suddenly give it more than it normally gets. It holds the water and just splits out. I hope you never experience this, but they do recover from it. These lil guys are resilient.
When do you water it and do you put fertilizer in it?
They are all looking great, I think all plants have their beauty and charm, and these ones do. Great video and hopefully you can do some more updates. 😁
Yay thank you!!
Lmmaoo the spin at the end 😅 How exciting!! I had forgotten about this propagation.
I forgot about it too 😫 & ya lmao the spin I was struggling
Check out dem little root fangs!
🧛🏻♀️I was pleasantly surprised to see them
hi erika, really miss your vids. i hope you'll find time to upload vids soon
I've found that night misting in the evening helps with rooting
Thanks for posting the update. Even Cacti need water 🌵😊
It is true 💦
ooo this is exciting! I'm slowly getting into cacti and there doesnt seem to be as much information online about their care. this video is helpful.
I’m glad you found it to be helpful!
Thank you for the update 😀 it’s been a while since you chopped it, glad it’s rooted an growing. No water all that time, guess that’s why I rot cacti 😂💚
Ya I was so scared to rot 😩 I’m actually kind of surprised to see new growth
@@ErikaLodes it’s doing great! 😀💚
Glad to see your BB’s are doing great 😊🌵
Yay!! 🥳
erika! this propagation update was so good 😊 ...i chopped off my sunburn scarred shortly after seeing your video...i almost killed the top portion planting it w only a light callous...i took it out ...chopped off the rot...since i live in the high desert in CA luckily the watered soil i had it in was drying quickly and it was ok ...didn't root as well as yours but after seeing this vid...i went outside and pulled it out... rinsed it and scruubed it w a a soft brush...yay! a beautiful callous w some wee lil roots as well...really appreciate you posting this vid. the bottom potted portion has been in the shade..im repotting 2moro and inspect it a little closer for new growth..i was going to prop a mammillarria on top to cover the chop...but i think i m holding off on that idea for now...what do u think?
Ahh yay you saved it! I would wait on plopping on the Mammillaria bc it might block the new growth. But then again maybe the new growth will grow around it? The flat scar on top bothers me so it does sound like a good idea.
Great job!
Glad to hear they are growing well for you.😇😇😇 I know nothing about this kind of cactus so very intrigued.🤔🤔🤔Thank you for sharing!🌵🏜🌵
💚💚
How did I miss the original video?! I’ve been wanting to chop my big cacti but I’ve been too scared.
Do it!!!!
I recently got into collecting cacti and succulents and really been enjoying your videos!
Using your video for reference! Hopefully mine totem pole propagation is successful like yours!
The reason that it is growing a pup, or as you say, a "sprout". Is because when you took a cutting, you chopped it's growth point. Which encourages the cactus to grow a "pup". When propagating a cactus, absolutely do not water until you have quite a bit of roots growing. Otherwise, you really do risk rotting the tissue. I think the new pups look awesome! I always love the odd looking cacti/succulents. I think the odd ones are the best ones! (Not ugly). The wrinkling is not going to hurt it, slight wrinkling does not damage the tissue. Always hold the water until you think the roots are substantial to avoid rotting. And when watering, allow soil to FULLY dry out between waterings.
Erika, I found that propagating my wax cactus was the hardest plant to propagate for me. It's so depressing 😞. I'm going to buy another one and try again.
Love your videos 👍
Update. While in the LA area I bought some 4 and 5 foot ones with numerous off shoots. One of the attached shoots have roots on it. Kind of odd to throw roots out while attached to the mother plant. These are VERY thick and stocky! So cool
Update on the totem pole please!!! So pretty!!
Omg that T shirt is awesome 😎
Major throwback where can I get one
Thanks!! I found it at a thrift store years ago
Cool!!
You cracked me up, good job. I forget plants out in the rain all the time.
Thanks!!
Yes I’m so glad it survived 😭
How are you cactus doing? Any updates
wow wow
Omg so in love🤎😭
In love 😍❤️
🤩🤩
can anyone tell me that my pole cactus will grow pretty top? this cutting was given to me after the callous had taken place..on BOTH ends. I have one end in the soil and it has rooted....the upper end is calloused and i wonder if Ishould cut it clean???
Hi my plants are loving your recipe for potting soil mix. Can I used that for cactus plants? Add more pumice?Tbanks :)
Yes!! Def more pumice & they’ll love it
Yayyyy! 🌵
Very nice 👍🏽👍🏽🙏🙏👍🏽🙏
Any update on your albo since moving to soil? 💚
😍
🌸
PS. How about SOH update 😁
Yes I’ll get an update out for you soon 💚
@@ErikaLodes 💚
Not too expensive. I bought a few 5 footers with multiple off shoots in AZ for only $125.00!! Check out my photos posted at Old West Cactus Farm of the Totem Poles.
I cut a simliliar size and layed it down. The tip actually curved upward as they would in their natural habitat.
Keep up the videos! 🤜🤛
( i can deliver one too) i live in Seattle but im in Az and S. Cali a lot.
Let me know....go live video and you can pick out the one you want. They are BIG and AWESOME!
8 months and the damn thing still has no roots formed ? ?😆 Oh wow , I have the same plant and now i realize it will take like a hundred years for it to grow, that thing is soooo ridiculously slow
💚🌿
🌵🌼
Started mine from cuttings, gas station on the corner has a huge plant out front
Wow!!! Free plant!!! You’re so luckyyy
Does anyone have the pen#s cactus?
Not even a Boobie cactus 😞
@@ErikaLodes there is one🥵🥵
Wait do totem cacti not have needles?
They do not, they’re smooth babies :) that’s why I love them
Don’t shame the cactus ): it’s pretty as is
Ummmm maybe you should water them 😂😂😂 why would it grow roots without sensing water near… I think the trick is balancing the water and letting it dry back out before you water again
Ok so when are we supposed to water bc I missed that 🙄
🥰🌵
😌🌵
