    I have a Totem pole cactus that was an arm from a large mother plant. It's now growing it's own arms and growing tall. I have propagated San Pedro Cactus from cuttings like you just did. The way I did it is letting the pieces callous over for at least 5-6 days. The area is very large and needs time to callous. When I did plant it, I put it in a dry succulent mix and waited to water for at least 7-10 days. The easiest way to lose a cutting is overwatering and rot. The San Pedro Cactus cuttings have tooted and are growing tall. Hope this helps. 🌵💚😊

      Thank you Carmen!! I hope mine will grow arms soon 😬 I’ll be sure not to water it especially since I didn’t wait long enough for it to callous 🤦🏼‍♀️

    Use cinamon to heal where you cut the top part will not get rot and not get infected from fungus dear
    And cinnamon help to get root quick too i propagated my zz by pulled out the oldest leaf and use cinnamon at the bottom of the leaf and stick in the soil only 2-3 weeks i got rooted
    🥰 anyway i love your channel alot

    • @ErikaLodes
      @ErikaLodes  3 года назад

      Is it too late to put cinnamon since it calloused? I’m open to slicing the top part again & putting cinnamon. I don’t want it to get infected ☹️

    the stem cuttings and the remaining cactus won't form a new top. It'll push out side growth just like leafy plants do, so depending on how low you cut it the higher up the side growth will be. i like to cut all my plants pretty low to keep them compact.

    • @ErikaLodes
      @ErikaLodes  3 года назад

    OOOOOOOoooooo!!! Thank you SOOOO much for taking the plunge! I have had 8 large San Pedro cacti on my kitchen counter (🤭) because mine have all done the same thing, called "etiolation", but im sooooo scared to cut my babies! Thanks for making the video! Oh, it takes a couple weeks for cactus to callous, I don't water for a month if I plant without full callous. Great video! love your cactus!

      Once you start cutting I don’t think you’ll regret it, go for it 🤩

    Other youtubers said to let the cacti dry out or callus for a few days... cutting it off slanted is actually good, more surface area for rooting

    • @ErikaLodes
      @ErikaLodes  3 года назад +1

      Oh you’re right I didn’t think about it that way!

  • @joannashelton3253
    @joannashelton3253 3 года назад

    the video you watched was a good’un. i saw a couple of others that yield additional info. f’rinstance, cutting at an angle leaves a slanted top that any rain will drain off of, thereby preventing possible rot. so your wonky cutting is good. one site advised callussing (sp?) for a couple of weeks! also cinnamon pressed onto cut surfaces prevents infections. my sprouties from upright rooted bases came out on the side of the top cut. watering advice was a bit conflicting, but less is definitely more. using bamboo skewers right beside unrooted chunks prevents fallage, haha! fun seeing the recumbent sections growing beebees at a a right angle! it will take a couple of months at least, esp as we’re leaving the growing season (maybe not so much in CA, i’m in MN)
    i think taking the rooted part down some more for another ‘log’ might be a good idea.
    p.s. the root system on my 2 ft tall pilosocereus was amazingly insubstantial!

      I would see them at some cacti nurseries just laying there & tbh it looks so cute like a lil log 🥺 thanks for the tip! When I cut it further I will use cinnamon especially since it could help cover the smell lol

    We had one growing up and my parents even moved it once when it was still somewhat little. Propagated it twice at the new house and all 3 grew pretty big with multiple arms. My parents sold that house after 20 years and the new owners got rid of the 2 "smaller" ones. Made me sad but they were so big you couldn't take the whole thing

    The 2 cuttings look great and hopefully the root for you, the the plant you have left I would not chop it. I would leave it and keep the water from the top as much as possible, I saw someone suggest cinnamon on the cut, on the top, really good idea. I hope this helps, most plants you cut look not nice for a while , however the come back looking great. great video, have a good one.

    I have two Totem Pole cactus cuttings, and they took over a year to even start putting out roots. What are the proportions of each ingredient in the soil mix you are using? Even after rooting mine grow very slowly.

  • @bhumphries1360
    @bhumphries1360 2 года назад

    It got skinny in the middle because of the amount of sunlight. What direction of sunlight was it getting? Anytime a cactus gets etiolated in the middle, is a sign that during that time of that growth in that area it wasn't getting the proper amount of sunlight. And you really need to allow cactus to callous over for 7-10 days. And for cactus soil, I recommend using equal parts succulent soil, extra perlite, pumice or lava rock, chicken grit, and toss in a small handful of horticultural charcoal. I've been using this DIY mix for a very long time, it works perfectly for cacti and succulents. Oh and one more thing, do not water cuttings untill substantial roots have grown. I have two cuttings that have been sitting out waiting to root for five months. Cacti are drought tolerant and can go without water for a long time. It takes longer to root in the winter months. Would love to know an update on this cactus.
