- Experimenting with different sizes and shapes of boards, wheels, trucks & everything else in between can be fun, until it becomes an obsession. I think I’ve come to terms with the one method to put a stop to my constant struggle to optimize my skate setup.
Came for the board, stayed for the Rugrats shirt.
🤌
Just wanted to say that I appreciate your videos. I'm 41 and watching these videos makes me want to jump back on my deck after 3 years.
Thanks dude! That’s a big goal of my channel so I highly encourage you to do just that. Just let go of all expectations and go ride your skateboard because it’s the best
@@dadboardsometimes it's nice to go back to the simple pleasures. You're the inspiration that all of us guy's need to get on that board that's collecting dust but never wanted to sell ✊🏼
@@Matsopoulos that means a lot, dude. Thank you 🙏
Do it, im 46 got a board quiver going on again. Skating seems really fun again like it did in the 90s
Hey man! Just saw you waiting for food at Dos Coyotes as I was leaving. I was too shy to say hello LOL. Love the content and always looking forward to the next upload. Keep it up!
“Maybe Ben Degros was right” hahaha I love it. I also slightly tightened up my trucks after that video and yes, I agree, definitely helped some.
Damnit @bendegros *shakes fist towards Canada
Having a quiver keeps away the madness for real! Another great watch !
That’s one of the most beautiful skateboards I’ve ever seen
I like the fact that you continously explore new spots. I can totally relate to your skating. Keep the videos coming 😊
Thanks dude, I try to always look out for new places to skate, even if it’s just some wonky little parking lot it’s good to change up the scenery and stuff. Probably harder to progress not just going to skateparks more often but I prefer to hit stuff that isn’t designed to skate
NICE! That park was dope! I dig the 90's weirdness...looked fun, I was seeing a bunch of rad lines someone could do there. That waterfall plaza spot at the end was sweet too. Digging your vids Skabrutha'... keep it rolling! BleSsUP!
Every skate dad gotta have their own mini skate shop. Love it!
One of the chillest yt skaters. Good stuff fam, keep ‘em comin. 🤙🏽
Thank you so much man!
awesome video man. nothing can go wrong with Thunders.
Another great video. I have that same board sitting on ice. Can’t wait to set it up now. Even have a set of those “tennis ball” spitfires sitting around lol
I bought two sets of the tennis balls, idk why I just really like the color. Lmk if you see any for sale I’ll swoop a 3rd lol. Hope they make this Russo shape a regular thing I could definitely get used to it
I just started riding those 151s on Andy Anderson's Heron 2 twin tail board, kind of a similar setup, have some 52mm 99a Formula Fours on there too. It's a wide wheel base on that deck but it still feels pretty damn good. Love the channel man, I got back into skating around 6 months ago, I'm 32 and took over a decade off, your channel is super relatable and keeps me motivated. Nowhere near where I was, but trying to get after it a few times a week when I'm not working. Crazy having to relearn kickflips when I used to have them on lock in every stance. For now I'm the every stance pop shuv and 180 master lol gotta take what I can get and keep on working at it.
Those && boards are wild! Don’t get discouraged man I was 35 when I started back up after 13 years! Took me like a year to get comfy again. I basically had no flip tricks and was shook to try anything. I think even just regular nose manuals took me like 9 months to relearn, it’s crazy how demanding skateboarding is and how many little muscles you use that you don’t realize haven’t been worked out in years until you try to get back on the board. Thanks so much for watching, dude! Truly appreciate it!
Love your takes on skating. encouraging me to get out there more often! I had this exact experience on a curb recently. not even new trucks, everything waxed, stuck every time.
Thank you! Really happy to hear that :)
I think it’s just the summer, man. Wax just melts into concrete and if a spot isn’t getting really consistent use they just sorta atrophy. This yellow curb surprised me though, it’s never stuck like that before. Just wasn’t the spot I guess 🤷♂️
Love all your content and thank you for another classic installment. Keep killin’ shit.
Also…breakfast burritos!
11:43 and 12:05
🤤🍳🥓🌯 🤤
That looks like a nice and fun setup! 🙌 No problem to have two or even three setups. 😎
it's sick when the colors go together...
but I can't have a "just for fun" board cuz what happens is I'll try to go faster, grind/slide farther, try switch-- and before I know it I'm session'n HOT! when the plan was to just mess around
😅
Lol same
I too was struggling with board madness, I finally cured it cause I found a set up that feels optimal for me. I’ve settled on an 8.25 Primitive Board, it has a 14” wheelbase, 144 Indy Mids, 52mm spitfire f4 tablets. I really like the shape of the primitive boards which is why I’m sticking with them, and I was never an Indy guy but I notice a lot of primitive rider do that or ventures and I didn’t like the set up with ventures so I tried the Indy Mids and the set up just works for me, it’s crazy cause my consistency and confidence has gone up greatly since
That Foot soldier! Love some 80’s turtles
Really good board control .cool watching you skate
I can relate. Since got back into skating I now have 6 set ups and lots of spare parts.
It’s nice to be able to tinker as when I was a kid you just had to skate whatever which is cool also.
Yeah a lot of it probably comes from not having the option to try new stuff when we were younger. I’d have the same pair of trucks for like 2-3 years. Also there wasn’t even a lot of options! It’s like what do you want, 7.5 or 7.75? If you rode an 8” you were on an absolute boat 😂
I want to skate that shape so badly. Looks like a dope board. I saw your new video where you hopped on a similar shaped blank check board. A buddy gifted me the Andy Anderson heron egg board- so I’m gonna ride that. But I think my next deck will be that lusso or DLX flyer shape egg. Thank for the content
Lmk how you like the && board, I think it has kind of a big wheelbase or at least I heard that
Sometimes especially after it rains or gets wet, curbs stick no matter what, the best way to fix it is to get a metal paint scraper/ a wider chisel and to scrape the krusty wax off and recoat the curb with new layer of wax
New setup looks sweet!
I just put 151 hollow lights on an 8.8 deck. I love them. They feel so stable and the pop is great. Haven’t had any issues with nose and tail slides.
I’m trippin on how light they are! Easily lightest truck I’ve ever owned. Really like that I can ride anything from an 8.38 to a 9” now too
@@dadboard they feel pretty good on transition as well. I plan on using them on some full sized 8.5 decks once I am done with the 8.8.
Congrats on finding another great setup. I found the Thunder 151 HL weighing less than my 149 HLs, super light indeed!
I’ve had hollow Indy’s, aces, slappies and none of them have been this light! I was actually trippin last night looking at both boards next to each other and how the thunders basically shaved off any excess metal in any place they could. I really love having a wide board that flips like a 7.5.
that 3rd spot is wiiild. so sick.
I've been riding loose trucks and Ben's voice is always in the back of my mind telling me I should tighten them ....maybe its time.
I just never wanted to tighten down my AF1’s because their whole point is to be loose, but I didn’t touch these thunders at all and they still feel loose, just not _ACE_ loose. If that makes any sense lol. I’m gonna ride these and talk a bit more about them next week, I’m curious if there’s any tricks that will come easier or be harder due to them not being extra surfy
I literally have this same board setup as a curb/ transition board and it is FUN. I also have no problem with flipping it due to the taper at the nose and tail. Love this shape.
Right! Idk what it is about it but it just felt comfy as soon as I stepped on. What kind of trucks you running?
@@dadboardI'm riding venture high 5.8 standards on it. I had Indy's but it just felt too squirrely. Now it's perfect.
Proper setup!!! Stoked to see you rocking some grip art!!!! I’m interested to see how the 151s treat you…. Jamie foy used to swear by them I’m pretty sure he nollie front crooked el toro first try on 151s!
I used to get wild on the grip with paint pens and all that but it’s been a while lol did Jamie Foy nollie onto that?! I’ll have to check I’m pretty sure it was just a regular front crook, but I it was for sure first try 🤯
@@dadboard oh shit just checked it was ollie in 😂but still it was first t I think atiba was mad because he was barely set up and it was first try
@@ETANGSKATES Dude either way that’s insane. I need to learn front crooks asap. Wouldn’t try them on any rails though lol
stay rad, dad
That really is a fire set up.
I was so hyped when I pulled those wheels out of the bag and realized they matched the stain and graphic 😂
Look you already got me off the Indys and on Aces I'm not going back to Thunders, I haven't ridden those since the mid 90s lol.
Just gotta find what works best for you! I’m probably gonna end up with Indy’s on a cruiser board or something.
Nice, I'm running three setups at the moment, though I only keep two in the car usually. But they're all popsicles - haven't been game to try a shaped deck. I just run an 8.0, with a moderate WB and Indie Stage11 forged hollows , and a shorter 8.25 (was on a Chocoalte and just got a Primitive) on Thunder Lights, and then an 8.375 on Ace Standards. Nice to have some choices, though the 8.25 and my Thunders are my fave... (though I'm mostly riding the 8.0 due to less wear'n'tear at present)
Best solution, imo, is 1 soft cruiser, 1 shaped cruiser/fun/tranny deck and 1 normal deck. All bases covered. 8.5+149+54mm is good all around deck.
Great vid as usual. Like the mix of street and park. That looks a fun park, looks like they’ve painted over all the graffiti for some reason though?
There’s never been any good graffiti at that park, it’s always just some shitty drunk writing or really bad tags. I don’t mind that they cover it up in that case lol
you're ripping on that Anti Hero man, that board is sick btw
Thanks homie! I was riding almost nothing but AH for a long time but took a break and have been on theories of Atlantis wood for like 6 months.
@@dadboard youre welcome man I think next complete for me is going to be an 8.5 anti hero with some spits and indys Im ready to size up a bit been on an 8.0 feels kinda narrow for my heavy ass
I similarly roll two set ups. Primary is a standard 8.25 on aces. Better for turning, flip tricks (at least in theory). Then I have an 8.5 with 13.75 wb, on thunders and with deck rails. I think of it as a slappy curb set up, but thinking about maybe getting af1s for it.
See I’ve been so used to AF1’s shortening my wb that I don’t even know what size I need anymore. I almost thought this 14.2 wb would be too short but with thunders it evens it out and feels great. If you put AF1’s on an already short wb it’s gonna feel tiny
@@dadboard yeah, I hear you. Even with thunders, it feels pretty small. More than the wb, it's the limited turning with the thunders that gets on my nerves , not too bad on flat or curbs, but really noticeable/constraining to me at skateparks with more traffic to swerve around and when I try to skate transition.
@@davidhall8656 I’m very used to the AF1 turn and how surfy they are so this will be an adjustment. I rode thunders on my 7.75’s for years when I was younger though so hopefully it’s not too much of a thing
i have a bunch of setups all different shapes and sizes. i'm not consistent enough for different setups to mess me up too bad. not a big fan of thunders, but to be fair the ones i've tried are almost 30 years old, short(low) and small(7.65"). indys, ventures, grindking, and gullwings are prob my favorites but indys are the only modern ones i've tried. i'd like to try some venture highs and grindking disruptors
I got a Heroin Snot 10" egg, with some Indy stage 11 215's and some Spitfire 53mm full conicals on it for the same reason. Anytime I just feel like messing around and keeping things simple I bring it to the sesh. Sometimes fun is just a bunch of 5050's and mannys its not just about learning new tricks
There’s no way you can ride a snot shaped board and not have fun 😂 imagine raging at a trick or something and you look down and see that shape. I kept it pretty mild with this one but I still want to get a more extreme shape just for having for those days when I’m taking myself too seriously.
I see your in the rocklin area, you should skate the schools near spring view park they have some good gap spots and manual pads. Nice vid btw.
That junior high down the road? It has some dry ledges out front we used to skate back in the day, Stefan did something on the neck high, super thin hubba inside too, this was like 20 years ago lol.
Board looks so sick
I’m loving it!
The best 🥚 size of trying to extending the rail of a small rail.
No 🧢
@@dadboard I agree!
Im disappointed in the amount of Heelflips i seen here, was looking forward to a nice ass heel flip on that new board lol. Those nollies look sick, i dig the shifty you put on them. How are the asics?!?!?!?!
Hey I did do a few at the skatepark, but….yeah it was a skatepark 😞 lol. Thanks man! Asics are doing really well, I won’t say too much but expect an update/review soon!
@@dadboard awesome! I’m looking forward to the review on ASICS! I feel that fuck when your board hit the puddle 😂 It’s never the roached boards, always the freshies 😂😂🤦♂️🤦♂️
What’s up dude. Nice fresh setup. I roll with 3. 8.25 .38 and .50😆 ur not the only one. Yo, always good to dodge a bullet! That could a been bad. Get that burrito👊
Dude I’ve smacked my knee like that before and if it would have hit I’d probably be out for a good month. Got so lucky there. Do you run different trucks on each board? I’m thinking of setting up a 3rd as like a cruiser/bowl setup type of thing with Indy’s
Yea..151’s with 8.5 and 149’s with the other two. I like a wider truck to match the board width. Dude I’m also lookin at getting maybe a 9 or 10 in deck😆 Any suggestions?
@@robertchase8504 Heroin makes a bunch of 9”+ boards I highly recommend them
Great set up, for me I prefer the popsicle boards and when you change to thunders the feeling on the board is like to close to the ground, maybe with Indy's or Aces the experience is a lot different. Cause when your set up, 55 or 56 mm wheel size it would be awesome.👍💯
Idk how big I can go for wheels on these trucks since they’re a bit lower than AF1’s but I’ll be trying out some bigger sizes with them down the line. For now really enjoying the small wheels, just can’t skate any super crusty spots on them
After a year and a half of messing around and spending too much $ I finally settled on 8.25 149’s 53mm classics and conical fulls for transition stuff. Mess with the griptape a little that keeps it less “serious”. If I want to get serious then full black grip. Now I have a ton of shit to sell 😂
Don’t sell! Keep it for when the madness inevitably returns 😂
@@dadboard I really don’t want to go through that ever again 😂💀
Currently im riding a 8.5 quasi and pepper grip and 5.8 venture cast v hollows and 54 radial full 7/8’s Allen
Pepper grip is my favorite.
That park is glorious holy moly - where is it?
Lol that is the marvelous Rocklin skatepark. Rocklin CA. It’s definitely unique, can be really fun or can be really frustrating depending on how you’re feeling that day and how many people are there
If the setup madness stops at 2 I'll be surprised. Its crazy how many cool new things i want to try... like ceramic bearings i think damn they're expensive so i bet they're sweet... same w the almost board w carbon fiber uber light... it's awesome but how do i compare that to my big madness cruiser?? Better skate a creature in between and have a backup board thats as 90's popsicle as it can be... also never buy trucks without buying bushings
Nah I run stock bushings these days until they blowout. Last two sets of bones were defective or something because they were completely fucked in only a few sessions. I doubt having two setups will cure the madness but it will at least subside it…for now 😂 I may even setup a 3rd using the Indy’s I got a while back, but at a certain point I know one board will just be the main setup and the others will probably just collect dust until I go to a skatepark and want to switch it up.
@@dadboard the spares i use to teach my 8 y.o. daughters friends... they see us riding ramps at our local and they all want to try... sometimes my sessions are just running kiddos up and down the mini ramp...
That’s a nice shape!
hell yea man. just switched to 8.75 shaped from 8.25 pop.. .. def feeling these shaped boards. dont think im going back
What model 8.75 did you get? I noticed a lot of them have like 15” wb and are pretty long which is why I liked this Russo board, it’s shorter than my 8.5
@@dadboard check the Welcome and Madness decks. There are a lot of 14.25-14.5 wheelbase decks available.
@@vorpalblades the very first board I got when I was remembering who I was again, was a welcome board! Idk why I haven’t gotten another one now that you mention it 🤔 Bevup skates for them now too!
@@dadboard flip lance mountain deck. not sure on wb
@@justinkane4814 the Mountain Crest is 15" , I'm skating one now. The Charger may be smaller W.B., it's a different shape and slightly shorter.
6:04 Cardiel skated that park in Sight Unseen!
Good eye! He destroyed it. Before they put that stupid fence up at the entrance you’d be able to get speed to air over the little hip at the beginning and actually flow around a bit. Nowadays it’s pretty much just scooters and small children on bikes 😞
I just went from ace af1 55 hollow to thunder hollow lights 149. Lasted about 3 skates before putting the aces back on. Thunders are way too low, hated it. Also the extra weight of trucks isn't always a bad thing, just hard to see it that way when the madness hits.
Interesting! I think the 151’s are about as light as a truck could be without being _too_ light. I hear you about the weight not always being a bad thing, if I’d have gone smaller I think that would be the case. I’m gonna be riding 8.75 and up on these so the weight will be balanced out.
@@dadboard Yeah I get you, wish I'd bought 151's instead of 149's, waste of £70! I'm surprised to see you're not getting wheel bite on the 151's but I guess your wheels are tiny, I was riding 54mm CF's with Thunder HL's and it was a pain!
I've been riding Ace AF1s for a few weeks, feel like they've hurt my flip tricks. I'm considering getting the harder bushings ACE sell, might be more stable.
What were you riding before?
@@dadboard Standard Indy's
Love the socks
Thanks! They came that way I didn’t mismatch them 😂
Dude you skate nice asf
Thanks man! I’m trying to keep it mellow but there’s a lot I still want to learn. Appreciate the love though my dude!
I think that second curb could be classified as an “old head” ledge. I count it as a ledge. Haha
Lol bro I straight up took a measuring tape there last year and at it’s highest it’s like 9”
Never felt more like Hank hill than at that moment
That board is your jam . Popsicles are wack
taking skating seriously does feel stupid, especially at our age, homie. we're all just playing with a toy after all, it's supposed to be fun!
i'll have my own setup madness forever tbh, but that's less cause i'm trying to find something optimal and just cause it's so fun trying new stuff
Big facts. I think I just get caught up in my own head and sometimes get frustrated I can’t skate as fluently as I did when I was 21 or something and that turns into me getting down on myself for not landing this or that. I also make the mistake of comparing myself to dudes who are like 15 years younger than me lol I’m trying to mellow out and just learn to approach skating differently than I did in the early 2k’s even down to trick and spot selection. I’d have never skated those long stairs like that when I was younger, I was trying to be like Rob Welsh and Kalis 😂
@@dadboard oh man i feel you! even down to wanting to skate like kalis lmaoo dude is from my state, seen him skate irl a handful of times, legend. but we all graduate from the ledge to the curb eventually so to speak. A LOT more years of fun ahead of us, bud
@@fatsteve2380 🍻 hell yeah. Never seen Kalis in person but I have had the privilege of seeing a lot of pros come through Sac over the years. One time I was just walking through a parking lot and saw Guy Mariano skating by with Beibel before he turned into a pro wrestler
