    Agree 100%. I attended SERE training in the USAF so I expected the instructors to stress the class mentally since you need to feel a bit of desperation to understand what a real survival situation may feel like. I went during Memorial Day weekend & I think too many of the guys thought this would be a camping trip. So, they definitely had some unrealistic expectations. We had to carry a lot of "smalls" for fires and I equated that to the way the USAF had us wear an overly large backpack to simulate an injury. Your tip on using the ferro rod is 100% on the mark. That was my biggest struggle in the class. Looking back, I wish I had a better idea of how to find good materials to practice with. Now, I see good, natural materials everywhere. I would recommend someone purchase some fatwood from Walmart in the BBQ section and to practice on that. From there, they can work with grassy materials. If they are lucky, they'll already know about tulip poplar or cottonwood to get that inner bark. Great tips Matt.

    Great video Matt! Everything you said is the truth. I watched TONS of Daves videos before going to the basic, and had the 5 minute shelter down pat, fire building was pretty simple, and the knots were burned into my memory from practice. There were things I struggled with , and continue to struggle with like navigation but its mostly because like any skill, it will atrophy if not used frequently enough. Thanks for the great video, can you do one of these vids for the scout class so I can prepare for that one..lol.

      @blackhatbushcraft  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you so much for the kind words Madison and I think watching those videos ahead of time as you did gives a student a huge advantage when they show up. I am glad you had a good experience at the school and no doubt you are continuing to put that training to good use. I wouldn't mind doing a video regarding the intermediate class at all. Much of the advice for the basic class would be still very appropriate. The main difference is the projects that get completed along the way. You will definitely get into more advanced nav methods as well with Pioneer Scout. I hope to see out for that one in 2019!

    • @bombproofbushcraft
      @bombproofbushcraft 5 лет назад +2

      Black Hat Bushcraft I know the land nav is more intense (pace counts, mapping, alternate forms of land nav). I am horrible at land nav. Actually I've gotten lost in mall parking lots before. Lol. From chatting with other folks who have taken the course I know that a successful bow drill is a must to patch. But aside from that, I have no idea what skills to practice. This layout you did for the basic was excellent. Also from watching the pathfinder learning center I know that the basic I took 2 years ago is not the same course taught today. Many upgrades and evolutions (which is good). I don't like to go into anything unprepared. Being at least familiar with concepts taught before heading to the class puts me one step closer to success.....I hate failure
      Keep making the good stuff Matt and I'll keep watching it. Thanks!!!

    EVERYTHING he said is spot on, but you need to pay strict attention to the part about making sure that you are physically able to complete the course. IT IS NOT EASY. That being said, if you take that piece of advice seriously you will learn a LOT of things. Also remember to hydrate frequently, and the part about taking food that you don't need to cook and can eat on the go is a MUST.

    Thanks for a very well informative video. I would like to take all 3 classes - basic, intermediate and advanced - than the survival course. All of these are good and I think some of what is taught use to be taught to the Boy Scouts before they were turned into a social experiment and than finally coed. I am 65 and was a cub scout so I know some of what you are talking about. Perhaps you could get each State to start up their own Scouts - Boy Scouts of Ohio for example - and take them the basics, then when they get promoted teach them the intermediate and when they are eagle scouts the Advanced. I think there was the Explorer group as well so they could be the survival class that is being taught now. Again thank you for an excellent video and review. Take care and stay well.
    Edit: The price you quoted is more than fare I would say. Take each course a year a part so you have time to put to use what you have learned.

    VERY well described Matt! When I attended this class in October, MANY of the student's took their lead of what to expect from the Pathfinder School's website....specifically, the class reviews that were posted online. Your synopsis here is right on the mark. Don't expect a camp out, or casual walk in the woods. You will get cold. You will get wet. You will get cut, stuck & scraped. You will get sore, you will get hungry. My advice to prospective students..."Embrace the Suck". It'll be the best hard-time of your life. Hope to see ya'll soon at the Intermediate Class.

    All good suggestions for preparing for the class. The last time I took any survival course was in 1968 at ITR and NCO school in the Marine Corps. So maybe I need a refresher? The only suggestion I'd make is the type of compass. In the Marines, we used the lensatic compass which I found to be useless. There are better ones on the market now, including the ones you show in your video.

      I was thinking that at one time it did. I am not sure when that changed. Basically the topics are all centered around survival during a 72 hour scenario. Understanding how to maintain your body core temperature buy staying hydrated, building a quick emergency style shelter and creating fire quickly off the landscape are central to the course. We will cover next fire mentality and how to plan and secure your next fire once the first one is established. We will discuss in detail how to maximize the use of the 10c's and also emergency first aid /self aid measures. Navigation with a compass is also a big part of the training. Each class is tailored to the season as some practices are better suited to certain seasons. I hope this gives you at least an idea of the class content. Couple questions.
    Are tobacco products allowed?
    If at the end of the day you want to cook a meal (I figure if you've gone the whole day training, what's a few extra minutes to put some hot grub in your guts) will I be allowed to do that, even on the final night?
    Whats the purpose of the patch?
    I have the Pathfinder canteen set, not the 32oz bottle, is that ok?

    • @blackhatbushcraft
      @blackhatbushcraft  4 года назад +1

      Whos Datguy Tobacco products would be allowed in the basic class. Also, you are allowed to eat at any time during the class but being busy will make quick foods the best choice during the day. Foods like trail mix and protein bars will serve you well when you don’t have time to cook. At the end of the day once class is done, you can cook something on the fire for sure. We want you to stay hydrated and fueled during basic class so you can perform well. You will receive a certificate for completion of the course and the patch is given to all who pass with 80 percent or better on the deliverables.

    Out of curiosity why do you all treat it more like something in the military? Most who for example join like the Marine Corps, I did and served 20 years ago and was in the infantry and those who do typically get fit in order to pass the basic fitness requirements before being shipped out to bootcamp. Then, of course, spend 3 months being physically trained for combat service as well as disciplinary required behaviour for the needed functionality for military service. Why force people to be placed into a stress environment with no skill sets? There is no purpose in doing that. You're not trying to make a military disciplined unit. You're trying to teach survival skills. The sleep deprivation should be placed upon advanced classes with people who already have the basic skill sets to draw from. The stress the military uses is done to take people from all walks of life and get them to function together and understand military behaviour and life. I feel this gun ho way of doing things, is time not well spent if you ask me. Instead of humping all over and wiping people out why not just teach and give them the needed skills while using the more advanced levels to turn up the fire a bit. I sincerely think your schooling would do far better by creating incentives to both grow as well as allow people to really master the basics far better. Even in SOI we were not thrown into stress situations till we really learned to master our basic skill sets. Just food for thought.

      We have created a bushcraft 101 class and an intro to survival class which are for people who want exactly what you described, a chance to learn skills in a camp environment with no stress. Those classes fit many people and will give the opportunity for people to learn skills who are not physically able to withstand the rigors of the standard PF survival classes. I think many people confuse the intention of the Pathfinder basic class . It is meant to simulate a 72 hour survival scenario and give people the chance to experience some stress while practicing and performing the base skills needed in such a scenario. It is marketed that way and not expressly meant for beginners. We do have beginners come and pass this class often but it can be challenging for those with little to no experience. As instructors, we do our best to help everyone who comes to our classes to gain the knowledge and skills being taught regardless of experience. However, the course description is clear that this course is not intended to be a laid back skills class but rather an opportunity for those interested to push themselves and to be in a simulated scenario. The students who come to the school and complete the training are empowered through it and always leave the school more confident, more prepared and with a sharpened skill set. I totally understand that this type of training does not fit everyone and is not appropriate for everyone but is rather a niche that the Pathfinder School fills. We have expanded the types of classes being offered in an attempt to be more inclusive and to hopefully share the system with more people. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for taking the time to watch and comment.

I am not sure who you are referring to as wannabes, so I won't assume. I imagine it would be hard for anyone to compare to the likes of Daniel Boone. It's a different world in many respects as compared to his day. I know for myself that unless something drastic happens I will never have the opportunity to test myself being afield for months, much less a year. I simply do what I can with the time I have and train hard to learn and practice every skill I can. It's a never ending process for me. I try to sharpen my skills and learn something new every day. @@rtoguidver3651 I am sorry you had that experience. I have spent countless hours with Dave as a students and as an instructor and friend and I can't tell you how many times I have seen him go out of his way to help students while going above and beyond the call of duty. I have seen him give thousands of dollars worth of gear to people piece by piece, I have seen him give classes to people who could never afford them simply because he believed the person deserved to come to the school to train. He did this not expecting to receive publicity or anything else in return. Back in June we were eating dinner in Atlanta after Blade Show (Dave, Iris, Shawn Kelly and myself) when a random guy came up and said, "I am sorry to bother you Dave but I am a big fan and had to come and say hello." Dave put down his food stood up and shook that strangers hand and took pictures with the guy right there at the table and thanked him for his support. He did this and after the guy walked away commented how grateful he was for people like that. He commented that if you ever get to big to shake hands with the people who support you then you have lost your way. That is just one small example of countless times I have seen Dave treat people that way. Dave does make a living from what he does however, it is his career and he works extremely hard and at the same time still finds time to share so much with people for free as well. I guess Being a friend, I have seen a side of him that maybe everyone else doesn't. Again, I am sorry you had a bad experience but Dave has a good heart and does a great many good deeds that go unnoticed by the majority of people.
      Just to mention the FB Learning center, there are multiple admins there. Very rarely have I seen Dave delete people. Usually some of the other admins take care of that stuff. There are several of us that watch the page closely and make sure the rules are adhered to to keep a positive learning environment. I don't recall seeing the post that you referred to so I am not sure why you were deleted. I have seen people challenge Dave pretty hard on there and he simply responded and let it go. Admins deleting people is usually for either a severe offense or a second offense after warning. Again, I am not sure of your particular case. I am not typing all of this to challenge you or argue in any way but rather just to share my experience over time and what I have witnessed.
