Their overload protection was some of the best in the business. I hardly ever saw damaged output transistors in these amps. Thanks for pushing it to the limit!
Love this amp. Was my first amp powering 2 15" Dr Crankenstein High Voltage subs. Massive box in my civic hatchback that was tuned for 32hz. The output was amazing. Love these dyno tests. Thanks for taking me back to memory lane.
We always dreamed of Phoenix Gold, MB Quart and JL Audio. A friend managed to get a used M-50 and it worked great on a pair of 12W1's. For mids, it was Polk MM 5520's. At some point I do remember a PPI amp as well. Ah, the joys of having an older brother with lots of audio friends. As for the MB quarts, I think only one guy had those, but he had 18 10-inch JL's also
Them phoenix gold amps were expensive back in 1990. One of my friends had a phoenix amp with Rockford fostgate punch subs. Them things used to sound so clean when the bass hits. Back in them days I had a house speaker in my car with a pyramid amp. Bass turn all the way up hearing nothing but bass. I used to turn up the volume high enough before the bass starts to clip. I was young and just experimenting with car audio.
I've thumped my JL13tw5v2@2ohm sub and never saw the amp shut down. not near the power as my exile 1200.1 but still very impressive. big d has taken my love for car audio to an addiction. now I have connected to people over the US that have the same passion. big thanks.... 😁
Very nice video. I think the quality is improving on the production side. Man those things pull quite a bit of amps when pushed! Btw looks like your views are up 29% in the last 30 days! Over 750 subs in 1 month too.
Thanks bro. It has a lot to do with the Power Acoustik 10k Dyno test I did a few weeks ago. I know these old school Dyno tests don't draw many views, but it's my passion, so I'll just do both. New amps bring more views/subs, old amps bring back memories for my homies
Keep doing the old school for sure. I'd be interested in the technology too or interviews by those who made them or even repaired them. New stuff - why not, gets views and gets people into looking at the old school amps. I was in high school or younger on most of these amps but I fell asleep looking at the RF brochures. You know I'm getting a decent collection of amps going myself...I blame you! :)
back in 91 my neighbor was having a job done to his Civic. 39 speakers and 10 Phoenix Gold amps later, he too the competition by storm. for speakers he used MTX. He was running eight 8" and eight 10" subs, built isobaric. his car was even featured in a magazine(I believe it was "Car Audio"). before I learned what a cheater amp was, I would know this car to be decades ahead of it's time. his plate number was"ALL MTX"
I can give you more details on this little car. I can even tell you stories of the rivalry going on between the shop that the Civic build was done in, and one of(if not) the oldest car stereo shop, probably on earth. My other neighbor(the one who introduced me to car stereo) told me that the Civic job cost $83,000.00
Thanks for recognizing the time and effort it takes to make a video for an amp like this. It will not get many views, but there are some people out there, like me and you who appreciate seeing these amps we always wondered about back in the day. I make these videos to share some history and also out of curiosity
Cool old amps. I had the MS2125 back in the day and that thing was a beast. I could kick myself. I sold the car and just left that amp in there like a dummy as it was probably worth as much as the car.
CAE was the place to get all the info back in the day. I remember once a year they would put out stats on every manufacturers amps if I remember correctly.
I noticed the franken'amp in that book, and the son of. have you ever done a review on either? super rare nowadays, and $2k+ new was a far stretch for most.
The big Frank was just an MS-2125 and MQ-430 in the same chassis while the "Son of Frank" was a MS-2125 and MS-275 in the same heat sink. Yes, they are not easy to come by, most have been gathered up by collectors
I had two MPS2240s running 8 Pioneer IMPP 10”s and an MS275 running Boston pro 6.5 set and Boston rally 4” mids in a 1990 Mazda pickup with a cap. Hit 144db back in 1995. That was a lot then.
Awesome video! Love your collection. Being from PDX I know all about Phoenix Gold. Great visions can start out the back of your dads home furniture and appliance store!

Thanks for all the great videos, thanks to you I was able to cancel my cable TV subscription, this is so much more entertaining. Anyway, I used to go to the stores and stare at these back in the day, but could not afford one. I did eventually save up and get a Punch 60 DSM. Now I'm interested in collecting some of these old amps and subs and am currently rebuilding some early Punch 15" subs. My question is, do these amps, this one in particular, need to be reconditioned to be reliable? Thanks and keep up the good work.

See if you can find a pro line driver, a eq215 or 230 from PG and share them with the world. Oh, that Ti series stiffening cap thing they made too. Oh, last one I promise, but a cyclone sub would be great to see again.
interesting that a MS275 packs more power than a M100 @ 2ohm certified. if i understand correctly the dynamic burst is what the amp can deliver during a short time. on their website i see it's 20ms for 1khz and 100ms for 40khz. what does that mean for the really stretched bassnotes on bass cd's, some are 5sec or longer, will the MS275 handle them better than a M100? Great work, love your amp test videos..
The Certified test is up to 10 seconds of a rising test tone, so yes, if you have long bass notes, then pay more attention to the certified or uncertified tests

I see one problem with the 1ohm mono test. If you look @ 4:40, you have it wired mono, but the stereo/bridged switch is in stereo....whoops!
