Other than the hideous Bierbaum retcon, this story was referenced in the JLA/JSA crossover "The Lightning Saga" as the sacrifice scene was played out again with Karate Kid holding the rod that was struck--but do to his superior reflexes--Val survived....

I have to look and see if I have The Lightning Saga. It sounds familiar but if I have it I'm pretty sure I don't have the complete story.

Shouldn't someone sacrifice themself to bring Proty back to life? Is Lightning Lad more important to the Legion than Proty? I think not! JK, but where does it all end? Why didn't they bring Chemical King, Invisible Kid, etc. back?

And Proty wasn't just some brainless blob. The Proteans appear to have human level intelligence so why was Lightning Lad more important? I definitely wouldn't have written this storyline as it played out.

That's exactly what I thought about this story. It makes no sense to sacrifice someone else to bring back Lightning Lad.

It's actually pretty awful. Imagine sacrificing Superboy to bring back Lightning Lad. Wouldn't that create some kind of massive time paradox?
